The New Pornographers

The New Pornographers

This indie supergroup from Vancouver was formed in 1997, but because the fledgling band was a side project for most of its members, their first album, Mass Romantic, wasn't released until 2000. The album proved to be worth the wait, as its release was met with exuberant critical acclaim. The band is comprised of Carl Newman (Zumpano), John Collins (Thee Evaporators), Dan Bejar (Destroyer), cartoonist and filmmaker Blaine Thurier, drummer Fisher Rose and vocalist Neko Case. Despite the fact that the members often found themselves involved in outside projects (Thurier made a film, Case toured with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds to support her solo album, Bejar continued to record with Destroyer, etc.

4/18--San Francisco Regency Ballroom (week of my b-day): awesome show, full band except Dan, venue had room for dancing in front by stage & we took advantage of it. Energetic crowd, TNP had most of us out of our seats. The Regency has great sound. Perfect early b-day present to myself. 5/6--Bellingham: special surprise (to us at least) Kathryn Calder & band were the 1st opening act!! They were fantastic & after the set Kathryn signed my newest TNP shirt. 2nd opening band was ok....then TNP (sans Neko & Dan) hit the stage & really got the crowd up & going. There was a bit of a balance problem with the mics during 1st song but it was sorted out by the 2nd one. In spite of limited space in front people were dancing & filling up the aisles & having a great time.

i had purchased the ticket to see the dodods and was also excited to see the new pornographers play. when the dodos came out, they seemed to be in good spirits and to be focused on the set, which is more than i could sday for the very first band. They didn't play for as long as i had hoped but they played all of the songs i wanted to hear for as little time as they had. musically, when they played, the amount of talent was ripping the venue apart by the seems. the quality was fantastic. When the new pornographers came out, the crowd fell quiet in an anticipating hush, all seeming to wonder what song they would play first. when the first few chords were anounced of "sing me spanish techno" the crowd roared with excitment. and, for the life of me, during their entire set, i couldn's find one person who was not dancing... it was a great show. i assume that it was due to the time-crunched set list, but the only thing i can say that's even a little negative, is that they didn't engage with the crowd as much as i had hoped. awesome show, nevertheless. it was a garenteed good time

I love the New Pornographers, and I would see them again at any other venue. However, the soundmix in the Crystal Ballroom was terrible. New Pornographers soundmix was slightly better than the previous 2 bands, but all three sounded as if they were at the end of a long tunnel. Vocals for all were muffled and inaudible. I won't go back.

The New Pornos rocked the house last night, sounding especially tight. Alas, Neko Case wasn't with them--apparently her flight from Virginia was delayed. Now, as much as I love their music, for me it's just not the same band without Neko's soaring vocals, especially on A.C. Newman's anthemic songs. Dan Behar stepped up to deliver some of his stuff, and to its credit the band rocked extra hard, drawing from some of its lesser-known (and less Neko-centric) backlist. A new member's contributions on sax and cello were largely lost in the mix (at least from where I was sitting, 3rd row). Tonight's show--WITH Neko--will probably achieve the heights of greatness that last night's set aimed toward.

The New Pornographers were absolutely breathtaking when they played their St. Louis show. I was so disappointed when the mosh pit was limited to adults over the age of 21, but as they began their first song I didn't even need the energy of a mosh pit to completely fall in love with the New Pornographers in a whole new way. Listening to an album is intense enough, but when they play live with Nico's amazing vocals and the unique combination of all of their voices harmonizing along with the perfect instruments I was dying on the sidelines. They played almost every single song on the top of my list. Upon hearing the first few notes of every song I was in disbelief at their success in consistently playing my favorites, including Adventures in Solitude, Bleeding Heart Show, Jackie, Testament to Youth in Verse, and Challengers. They played a wonderful variety from all of their albums, leaving me with a surreal and satiated feeling without a trace of disappointment.

I have been a longtime fan of the New Pornographers and was really excited to see these guys for the first time live. I even brought my 12-year old son there as he is also a big fan of their music and this was his first concert. I, unfortunately, was really let down by the performance. There seemed to be some tension on stage and a sort of discombobulated dynamic overall between the band. They finally came together when Neko blazed forward with her first lead vocal and then they slowly fell apart again a couple songs later. They came together really strong in the end when they finally began to connect with their audience. When I go to a show, I would say 2/3 of the experience is the energy a band has on stage- how they relate to each other and their fans. Ultimately, when a band is in sync with each other, we all feel it. All in all, the New Porns lacked dynamicism and a connection to their audience, except when Neko had lead vocals- she, herself, took me outside the normal realm of experience for a few sweet moments.

The opening band, The Dodos (which i was the most excited to see) weren't that impressive. Not much energy. TNP, however, were very entertaining, but again not the best show i've ever been to. Plus, I was standing directly under the AC with a spaghetti strap top on.... I was freezing to say the least.

This show was phenomenal! There were a few minor audio problems in the beginning, but nothing too major, and it really just made it hit home that I was really there seeing them. The whole lot of them had great stage presence, and their connection with the crowd was right on point. All of them brought their best game, they played amazingly. I left with a great sense of awe and admiration towards them. I'll definitely see them again if they come back through.

Hot, sticky, intimate show. A C Newman sweated through two shirts as the band and audience nearly melted on the hot summer night. A packed house, we were rewarded by a great show. The first opener, the Duke and the Dutchess were low energy, but technically on point. The Dodos, the second opener, had an incredible drummer and a great energy. The New Pornographers, seasoned veterans of performance, were flawless despite harsh acoustics. They brought the audience right in with "Sing me Spanish Techno", and dealt with 9 performers bumping into each other on the tiny stage with good humor. The drummer is not only very good but quite entertaining to watch.

Of course they were great. 9 accomplished musicians playing an array of instruments. Great indie/rock/country/whatever songwriting. Harmonies were gorgeous. Neko Case is a wonder to hear and watch. . . except for the fact that she was 'unhappy' with her microphone for the first 5 or 6 songs. It was a little distracting, watching her constantly look offstage, doing the wild handsignals that are supposed to be discreet, to change this or that. I think I'm just being nit-picky, but it kind of got in the way of my enjoyment of the concert, and made her seem disappointed and not that into it. Sometimes, little technical difficulties can be endearing; reminds you that your favorite rock stars are human. Once things were worked out though, they rocked unequivically. Played a bunch of my favorite tunes. Would definitely see them again, might just urge a more thorough sound-check.

After a slow start, technical maybe?, the long list of hits started coming. I've been a fan for a long time and was not disappointed. The band was tight and each of the lead singers were amazing. Neko Case was as awesome as I expected, Despite the delays and the freaking heat in the Troc, the New Pornographers kept their sense of humor. I've been trying to see this band for years and the show was everything I could have hoped for and more.

The New Pornographers were in top form—each member gave arresting, memorable performances. Connection with the crowd was fantastic, particularly on the more anthemic numbers. Setlist was a bit "Twin Cinema"-heavy, which I didn't mind, but I would have liked to hear some of the new material off the recently-released "Together." If you get the chance, see this band. The Dodos' opening set was mindblowing, too. Thank you, musicians!

I've never reviewed a show online before, but I feel obliged to write one for this show due to the unusual circumstances that transpired during the show. The band was a few songs into what seemed like it was going to be a really rocking set. A.C. was teasing the audience about not being interesting enough for him (in good fun) when some idiot very unfortunately hurled one of the bands' CDs at them and hit A.C.'s guitar. It was a really lame moment of unruly fandom, and the crowd did not approve. A.C. was shocked, and sternly, and appropriately let everyone know that kind of behavior was not going to be cool. Ms. Case needs to review her band mate's admiral performance, because she proceeded to jump the shark in the worst possible way. She informed everyone that she would fuck them up, and that we were not to fuck with her. She also informed us in a very aggressive way that she was a piece of white trash that would fight with every single member of the audience. At first fans cheered her on in interest of solidarity, but that seemed to upset her and she kept going. When A.C. wisely tried to diffuse the situation she really dug in deeper. When he pondered if the person threw it out of love, she said "no this is America, that was hate". It was at this point that part of the audience booed her. Her hypocritical (she's ready to fight with the entire audience over one person's stupidity, and American's are hateful?) tirade went on for almost 10 minutes before the band played again. Before they started she told us that she was going to leave the CD on the floor to "shame the audience" . To say the least, the life was sucked out of the show, and it never really recovered. I went there to rock out with the band, not be shamed by them. I was not the one who misbehaved. The New Pornographers are one of todays very best rock bands and are one of my favorites so I was very excited to see them. I bought a ticket for a friend unfamiliar with their music so I would have a driving partner since I work long hours, and live 2+ hours away. I took the night off from work and left a pregnant wife home to take care of our 2.5yr old by herself so I could see one of my favorite bands only to be told I was a hateful American. Not exactly what I had in mind. I'm a musician, and I've played in front of just as many people as was at that show last night. I understand that it is a very intimidating situation. However, I don't understand getting bitterly angry at the entire crowd over one idiot's misguided fandom. A.C. said it best when he said "You can cut me up into 1000 pieces, and every piece would say I love you" Neko responded with "You can cut me up into 1000 pieces and every piece will want to fuck you up". I hope she looks over at her friend and sees a man (the one who was actually attacked) that gets it, and has an example for her.

New Pornographers played in their usual phenomenal fashion, and kept us laughing when they talked occasionally in between songs. They were called in for an inevitable encore, and played a couple of songs I'd really wanted to hear. Wish they had played more slow songs, and I also wish that the cellist/saxophonist's mic was put to a higher sound level--barely heard him at all! Neko Case and Carl Newman are wonderful singers, the former only having a couple of minor intonation problems in the songs at the end of the show--she was probably tired--and Kathryn Calder also performed splendidly. (I hear she has a solo album coming out this summer, which I'll watch out for!) Dan Bejar has a really interesting voice, and performed very well despite his evident inebriation. Overall, a wonderful performance, well worth my time and money. The opening band, the Dodos, were a pleasantly surprising little stocking stuffer. I'd never heard of them, but they blew me away with their interesting sound and their really tight playing. Everything was extremely well put together, and one would be hard-pressed to find rhythmic flaws in their performance. Excellent, I'll definitely be looking into their stuff. The openers for the Dodos (Dukes and Duchesses, I believe?) were not so great. Boring chord progressions, repetitive songs, and drunken whistling out of key all failed to impress me. (When are bands going to learn that whistling--especially in live performances--is a bad idea? The intonation is just so terrible! NP did this in one of their songs and it was maybe the only time in their entire performance that I cringed.) A great show, all around! If you weren't there, you missed out!

I'm not a big Pornographers fan at all so I was there for the opening acts. The Dutchess and the Duke put on a great show, I really love their music and they performed really well. But the Dodos were absolutely INCREDIBLE. That band has more creativity and talent than i could have imagined. Both their sets were two short for my liking but The Porn was headlining so oh well. The Dodos NEED to headline their own tour. I could have watched him rip on that guitar forever. Absolutely mind-blowing.

Only discovered this band less than a year ago, but was blown away by their musicianship and the quality of their writing and performances on record. I was skeptical, what with seemingly every band using auto-tune and studio tools to do what they, as musicians, cannot. Hopefully, I thought to myself, they can at least get close to what they played on their albums. Not only did they get close, they nailed every part, every vocal harmony, every rhythmic nuance. This band is tight!! And they are some of the most amazing performers to watch. As a musician, I can't help but see what the performers on stage are doing, and judge the level of difficulty based on personal experience. These guys (and girls) would put any top-rated musical vet to shame. Musical chops? They've got plenty. Rhythmic craftiness? As tight as they come. Vocal prowess? I'd dare anyone to find a better band who can pull off 5 part harmony with this much aplomb. In short, this was easily in the list of top 5 show I've ever seen, and can't wait for them to come back around!!

The concert was amazing. I liked the fact that it was a bar venue because then you can go right up to the band. EPIC. I got there early for front row standing position. Just beautiful. When for the Encore the lead vocalist asked the crowd what he should play and I yelled "MY SLOW DESCENT" and he played"My Slow Descent". I was very, very disappointed when Calvin College canceled the show. Thanks for having them play! I was right up front, it did seem like there were more speakers behind us than in front, so it was slightly hard to hear the signing. Me and my imaginary girlfriend, Kathryn took ourselves out to The Showbox at the Market last night to see The New Pornographers with openers Imaad Wasif and The Dodos. The show was all ages though few of us would have broken any laws by bellying up to the bar. This may have been best explained by Neko Case s comment about how, after 15 years, they have finally found popularity and success in a Seattle Bar. She mentioned the old days at the Croc with a semi-sweet caste to here countenance… First up was Imaad Wasif guitar/vocal leading his trio of drum and electric bass. Imaad is a talented player and passionate singer with anthemic tunes that lean towards a gothic, Yes flavor. Songs he described to the audience as about love and what connects us all. I was somewhat distracted by Imaad s live histrionics that oddly recounted a bit of what Liberace s moves may have been were he a twenty something, Russel Brand looking guitar player opening for New Pornos. The Dodos from San Francisco were the middle layer of the bill. Another guitar fronted trio but horizons different with the other two players being drummer and vibe percussionist. A big novelty from the vibe dude was playing with a bow lending a cool, atmospheric background. Front guitarist was strong; good high vocals, all in all the Dodos sounded a bit Vampire Weekendish. I have waited ten years to see The New Pornographers and I must say they kicked ass- must of know I was coming… They had performed the night before at the Showbox and mentioned a couple times that this show was remarkeably the better fo the two. It seemed for them and the audience as well, as crowd reaction was loud and enthusiastic. The New Pornos have nine members, six singers and up to four guitarists at a time, all with no solos. A proverbial wall of indie sound. Neko Case is a vocal force; both fronting and harmonizing with ease. Dan Bejar spent a lot of time with his butt to the audience holding a cup in one hand. I think he had spent a busy day in Seattle between the two gigs and must have been really thirsty. My blues oriented friends would be non plussed at the Canadianess of the music; it was white and lingered a lot in high registers, particularly with the two keyboards and sundry sample sounding backgrounds. Still, they are force of rock and roll with wry and sometimes cleverly wrenching lyrics. Playing three cuts off of Mass Romantic album, including the title track… yours truly was in heaven. Before launching into Slow Descent into Alcoholism, AC Newman warned the kids, don t tell your parents we played this song. But that s my tune!! Thanks Kathryn for the pretend date. It was a grand evening of coffee, cranberry and Canadian rock! Your pretend boyfriend, alby

Saw the New Pornographers at The Orpheum, Madison WI, 8/4. The band played a delightful mix of old favorites and new songs from "Together." They had a positive energy as a group and the music kept the crowd on their feet. I would have liked more rapport with the audience, but I understand that touring may make every new city, every new venue, and every new anonymous crowd a bit repetitive; to the audience the band is in town one night, but to the band the audience is one of several in a week. Energy toward the audience and rapport can take a hit from that. The sound mixing could have used some help; the multi-layered sound of the New Pornographers didn't fully translate through the speakers (but maybe I was standing too close to the speakers). Overall, though, I love this band, I loved hearing old and new songs, and I would definitely see them again.

Once again the New Pornographers put on an amazing show, despite the sound system's repeated efforts to derail them. Neko Case is a must see in person as that's the only way to truly appreciate her vocals. That being said the sound system was horrible at the show. There was a constant reverb all night long over the speakers. It's a credit to how good the New Pornographer are that they were still able to put on a great show despite the technical limitations. The opening act, The Dodos, actually turned out to be quite good as well. It's the first opening act that I've seen in quite a while that didn't completely make me feel like I was wasting my time.

Neko Case is incredible, but, with such a large band, and so many egos involved, The New Pornographers were just too much for the Ogden Theater. On stage, there even appeared to be tension between two of the members of the band. (I won't name names.) The Dodos, however, were incredible!! Their performance was flawless, and even with the emphatic and inspiring sounds of the dueling guitar and drums, the melodic sounds of the vibraphone were still crucial for the amalgamation and originality of each of the band's songs. Just amazing!!

I had an excellent time. I had never seen New Pornographers live before and I wasn't sure how their music would translate in a live setting, but all of my fears were quickly dispelled when they started right off with a super-tight rendition Sing Me Spanish Techno. All of them are amazing musicians and their talents are quite apparent in the live show. But, the thing that grabbed me the most was the power of their vocals. They captured all the layers of vocal complexity on the records beautifully and I was almost moved to tears. Couldn't recommend this band more highly.

I really liked the New Pornographers and the Dodos. I felt like the sound mix was a bit off at the beginning of the New Pornographers' set, which made it a little tough to hear some of Neko's vocals. Other than that, one of my favorite bands, loved hearing them live again. If you weren't a particular fan of them and just like going to shows, it was also a good value because there were three shows and it went from ~8:30- 12:30, for around $30. The only thing that kept this show from being amazing was the behavior Dan Bejar. They had to wait for him to show up on stage for his songs and when he was only playing guitar, he had his back turned to the audience. It was weird and took away from the show. Everyone else however, was awesome. They played and sang their hearts out. I wish the sound mix had been better. It was difficult to hear the vocals, which are so important for this group. The opening act of Imaad Wasif was good. I wasn't expecting such heavy, nonacoustic sound from him, though improvement on balancing the music and voice would have made it fantastic. The Dodos followed up with an amazing set that you just didn't want to end. I wish they had gotten longer than the half hour slot they took up. Their sound was great and Meric Long's voice, lyrics, and guitar mixed perfectly with their fantastic drums and original vibraphone playing. The only critique of The Dodos I have is that Meric and Logan each had annoying little mustaches that they really should shave. The New Pornographers are always good and their quips with singer Danny made it enjoyable to watch. They ended the show with the fabulous My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism which rocked the show. The amazing music was topped off by wonderful company, a guy in a wolf hat, and a nice security guard that ate DumDums with us and let me wear his sunglasses.

The New Pornographers were amazing and rocking as usual. They played for an hour and 45 minutes with only a short break for the encore. They played a great mix of really old and really new songs. The Dodos who opened were also great. It was my first time seeing them live and I will definitely be seeing them again! The Crystal Ballroom was a great venue. It has a lot of space but they separated the floor into over 21 (for drinking) and general. So even though it was a big floor you could see everything on stage easily. The moving floor was also pretty cool.

I have had the opportunity to see the New Pornographers 4 times over the past few years, including the last 2 times they have appeared at 1st Avenue. They have never disappointed me and I'm sure the large sellout crowd at Friday's show would echo my sentiments. This band knows how to entertain and the quality of the musicianship and the vocals expecially are astounding. They don't need to add an overabundance of bewildering lights and lasers just to perform a magical outing of great talent, songwriting and musical expertise. Bravo for the band and 1st Avenue for presenting this show. Also, the band "My Gold Mask" was quite intereresting as well and I was amazed at the quality of this duo's distinctive flair.

The New Pornographers are superb. Alas, the sound at the fox was all flattened out. Worst sound at a show I've seen there yet.

It was all business. After opening with Moves, the NPs reeled off a mix of their best from all five albums. The audience in the small charming venue had a number of hardcore fans, myself included. The NPs managed to give all the songs a rockin' treatment, including My Rights Versus Yours, All the Old Showstoppers, and Testament to a Youth in Verse. Nineteen songs in all and one three-song encore. I got my fix.

The New Pornographers were incredible! They played a perfect set, were so in the moment, and the crowd ate them up. Such a joy to watch. My only complaint was that the concert started an hour late, and the openers had a longer set than i would've liked.

The bill sounded too good to be true; two great bands playing on the same stage. However, while the line up sounded great, the actual performance sounded terrible. I don't know who did the sound but I've heard boom-boxes with better quality. Frankly, I can't really say how good the bands were because the sound was just awful. Which is terrible as they both had tremendous energy and were clearly excited to play Iowa City.

The Walkmen stole the show. Every time I see NP, this was the fourth time since Electric Version era, they have less and less enthusiasm. Fortunately they have an incredible catalog to draw from so they'd have to be half-asleep to put on a truly bad show. That said, there were moments - especially at the beginning when Neko Case's mic wasn't mixed properly (in fact, the sound in general was off and the rooms acoustics ar garbage to begin with) that I wondered if maybe they sat around backstage and made the decision to break up. It was truly uninspired until about halfway through.

Excellent live show - they are all very talented and it shows. Each person was showcased in some way. I was very pleased with the performance and the venue. Parking could have been a little better, but there just isn't much space.

Great show, but something was off about the sound at Bogart's. You couldn't hear them playing and the PA struggled to provider enough bass and volume to project the singers. Not sure if it was the sound guy, the PA or the venue. Great show though.

Did not care for the Walkmen at all. Music was drab and uninspiring. New Pornographers seemed like it was a public rehearsal. They didn't do much to work the crowd. The sound was absolutely awful. It was muddy overall and the vocals, which are really what makes their sound, were totally buried. If I didn't see their lips moving, I wouldn't have known they were singing. Club was uncomfortably warm and the people in the back of the downstairs were carrying on in conversation that was incredibly rude and distracting. Also did not care for the concert starting so late (New Pornographers didn't go on until 10:30). We left after about 7 or 8 songs.

Great show in Indy. Have seen band several times in Chicago. It looked like Neko was have a great time at this show- not quite as reserved as some performances. Continues to be one of the most creative bands out there. Carl Newman is such a great song writer!

Nice mix of new with old. If you have a favorite song from a past album, they will definitely play it. Don't worry about catching the opening band though.

I've only seen NP one other time and this is the first time I've ever heard or seen The Walkmen. NP sounded like they were tired out. When I first saw them in Bloomington, I was impressed, considering that I wasn't that into their style of music. True enough, the acoustics were terrible at the Vogue, yet I still kept thinking "when is this going to be over"? I paid way more than what is was worth. I mostly enjoyed The Walkmen. The lead had such an incredible and powerful voice. I won't be seeing NP again. I didn't hate them, but as performers, there is nothing about their performances or even themselves that's remotely interesting.

I love the pornographers but have to say was disappointed with the show. They appeared to be struggling all night to get the sound right and ultimately it ended up being way too loud for the size of the venue they were playing. It was nearly impossible to hear either of the keyboards. AC's mic was drowned out by the rest of the instruments being jacked up way too much. By the end I was wishing the show would have been acoustical so I could have at least heard the instrumental subtleties for which this bands albums famously showcase.

The New Pornographers are hands down my favorite band to see live. Their live show is such a cathartic event that it obliterates all expectations. I wasn't expecting Neko Case to be there so it was a great surprise that she was. Even though she was in a bit of a funk (her house had caught on fire, she had been in a car accident, and gotten dumped) she delivered solid vocals and mean tambourine and hand-claps. As always, the band sounded super tight and oozed talent. Each member is a great musician and a fabulous performer. The lush vocal harmonies were spot on and the whole place was thick with energy, which says a lot because Terminal 5 is a big place. The setlist featured a good variety of tracks from all of their albums, including a rendition of "Hey, Snow White." I flew clear across the country to see the Pornographers and would do it again in an instant.

This is an incredibly talented band and great live if you ever have the chance. Their performance was way off on Dec 6th though. Still loved the songs but Neko was Debbie Downer talking about dying on a flight the next day and several songs sounded way off. They were not feeling the love nor was I! Their show a couple of months ago however was one of the best I have seen in New York.

Heaven is a never ending New Pornographers show. These guys never disappoint. And they did a great job at the show Monday night. One question: where was the bearded guy? His absence was conspicuous, but not mentioned. Usually the New Pornographers (nice sign, by the way) knock it out of the park on the Bleeding Heart Show but this time it was a different song. Adventures in Solitude. WOW. Love you guys, will be seeing you again.

I go to a lot of shows and have seen several in this venue this year. This was among the best. The performance was tight and the sound was good. They played a great mix of older annd more recent material. Neko Case's voice was amazing. I'd see these guys anytime, anywhere.

I saw Neko Case at the National awhile ago and she was great. The New Pornographers were good, but I enjoyed her better. Tokyo Police Club were great tho, we got a bandanna for the dog even, lol. The venue itself is pretty good, floor always seems to be sticky, but has a smoking area and serves Woodchuck beer... so they are A-OK in my book :)

Tokyo Police Club started the night off by rocking the crowd and getting us warmed up and ready for the main event. The New Pornographers took the stage and Rocked solid for 2 plus hours. They played all of their hits and kept the crowd enthused with a great playlist selection. This band really rocks the small venues. Thanks to the National Staff for the VIP seats.
