The Horrors

The Horrors

East London via Southend-On-Sea band THE HORRORS have come along way since 2005, when they graced the cover of the NME with eye-linered eyes, big hari, an eff-you attitude and barely a single (the spiky ‘Shenna Is A Parasite') to their name. Their live shows were a riot- often literally- but did what rock n roll is supposed to do: energise, excite, divide and polarize. Three records on, they're all grown up and the hype has evolved into almost universal respect. Skying is a wide-ranging, shapeshifting album with an overarching pop sensibility (see: unklikely hit single ‘Still Life').

Being such a huge fan of these guys' music and creativity, I was so excited for this show, I had to sit down to relax before entering the venue! Haha. The Horrors brought such a fantastic atmosphere to the El Rey Theatre. Their music creates a heavy feeling of nostalgia and psychedelic and dream like vibes. They alternated insongs from their sophomore album Primary Colours, and their lastest record Skying. The songs from both albums complement each other perfectly. Faris gave his all into his vocals. Rhys' bass-dancing is a spectacle on its own, as well as Joshua's going crazy as he plays his guitar, hair covering his face completely and all. I completely let loose and danced to every song, closing my eyes at several points, smiling so big, and feeling doubtful that this experience was real. So surreal to be part of a crowd, who are feeling the things you are....

It has been a treat to see this band develop over the last few years. This time around they have proven that they are welcome in LA anytime. Only drawback to the show was that no songs were featured from their debut album, Strange House. I'm pretty sure the audience would have lost control if they did.

I brought earplugs with me but, sadly, did not need them as the sound for their show was weak. The Horrors put on an OK show -- I'm a huge fan but I just was not really blown away. It's telling when the keyboards can dominate the lead guitar. . . not a good sign. Frankly, the band needs to fire their sound engineer, or rent more and more powerful amps. They have powerful songs but the execution of them tonight, at least for this fan, was not inspired. It seemed "dutiful", nothing more. Sorry to say; I had high hopes. They'll be playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg in October and I am hoping they are a lot louder in a month. It's a rock show, dang it -- if you're not a little deaf and tingling all over when you leave, the band is not doing their job. That said, they are the first band I've seen who sell custom scarves at their gigs, so they at least have the marketing down pat. Now, just get some amps and turn them up!

I saw these guys open for NIN at Webster Hall. After all was said and done, I saw why The Horrors are one of Trent Reznors favorite bands. Random fact: The bass player is hilariously funny.

I love everything that The Horrors have ever done, but I was especially excited to hear songs from "Primary Colours" played live. It was my first time seeing them and I was completely blown away. They were amazing and they know how to pick great opening bands as well. The venue was pretty intimate, or maybe it's just because I was at the very front. They are such a great live band. They have so much energy and a great atmosphere that they are able to maintain on their records and in their live performances. I hope that they come back to NYC very soon.

My ears are still ringing -- in a good way. I saw them a month or so back at the Bowery Ballroom and that was weak -- the keyboards had overpowered the guitars for petesake. Not so, this time in Brooklyn. Hats off to the sound guys at the Music Hall of Williamsburg -- the sound of impressive. The moshing got to be kind of obnoxious, but it was a hell of a rock show regardless.

Doors were set for 8pm...Horrors didn't get on stage till 12midnight... opening acts didn't start till 10 something... was a long wait. Made me pretty sad, the Horrors came out they were completely unapologetic. The sound system in Magicstick was pretty shoddy, maybe the Horrors played well, but the sound was so god awful you couldn't tell.

The Hounds Below, a new group formed by Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies were the opening act for The Horrors show at the Magic Stick in Detroit. Mixing alt country with '80's Indie, the band whipped through a very enjoyable set which turned out to be their first gig! I'd highly recommend them. Second support, Crocodiles (from California, I think) showed all the promise of a band about to tear the roof of but, in my opinion, never quite delivered. I've read a lot about this band lately so I was looking forward to seeing them. Then again, I felt the same about The Soft Pack: loved the album, then felt a bit let down when I saw them live. So much has been written about The Horrors dramatic volte-face from garage rock cartoon goths to krautrock-devouring shoegazers but it really is one of those "who knew?" moments. Aided by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, Craig Silvey, and video director Chris Cunningam (Bjork, Aphex Twin, etc), The Horrors have made a belief-defying leap of faith, immersing themselves deep within the dark, pulsating, cavernous, effects-laden world of, among others, MBV, JAMC, Joy Division and Can. The power and scale of the record translates extremely well live and at times, even transcends it. So, witnessing the band in this new guise, do they mean it, man? They must have known, making such a sonic U-turn, that they were going to be put under the microscope and have their credentials double-checked. Well, I must say I'm convinced and I like to think I can tell when I'm being faked out. To make this kind of music and for it to come from a genuine place means not being afraid to leave space and there's canyons of it here. So what if the drums and bass pound relentlessly in Can-esque fashion on one note for 2 minutes before the vocals come in? Let that tension build! The set is, basically, the album although I believe they play at least one number from their debut (sorry- lazy journalism!) Nevertheless, it doesn't seem at all out of place with the rest of the set. The venue is less than half empty but we're all too mesmerized to care. To tour half-empty venues is frustrating (I've been there many a time) but, this is just what bands do. America is notorious for kicking many a UK band's arse due to it's sheer scale and magnitude and the distances between it's cities. Maybe The Horrors will never reach beyond cult status (unless they go emo on their third album!) but the main thing is they've made an extraordinary record that they're more than capable of replicating live. Horribly good.

The Horrors did take a little while on a Monday night to appear on stage, but the wait was worth it. Show was tight and professional and very high-energy. I danced the whole time. Lead singer Faris Badwan was all over the stage and interacted well with the show attendees. The band played many of their songs from the excellent CD "Primary Colours".

An excellent show! Lots of great energy. As usual The Horrors never disappoint. They played the whole of the latest album plus two from Strange House for the encore. I know, people want to hear the first album ( I love it too), but Primary Colours is perfect. I got to meet them after the show and they are a bunch of really great guys. They don't disappoint as people, so gracious, attentive to thier fans. I can't wait til they come back.

I love the El Rey and the entire vibe was spot on. The Horrors' stage presence and sound were perfect. I saw them before at another venue and there was something wrong with the sound on vocals, but not tonight. They have one of the best CDs of the year and they don't disappoint live. And I was glad to see they got a proper full show as they deserve. Opening band was good too (which you rarely get.)

I first heard The Horrors at Coachella and have been obesessed ever since. At the time, their album 'Strange House' was their only release. Their latest album, 'Primary Colours' is my favorite from any artist this year. I saw The Horrors open for The Kills in May and bought tickets to see them again in October during their solo tour. A diverse group of Horrors fans showed up to see the show. They played all of the songs from their 'Primary Colours' album and even came back on to do an encore- which is rare from this band. Anyone can see that The Horrors are truly passionate about their music. I can't wait to hear the music they produce in the future.

Okay lets start off by saying future static was a cool openeer for the band. He was playing techono and droppin some fat beats. Japanese Mototrs was high energy and rocked it and better than expected. Now lets get to The Horros they played all the songs off their 2nd album Primary Colours and took me by shock by playing some of thier Strange House stuff. Every1 was dancing, headbanging, and juming just having a good time and appreciating the music. Just The Horrors had just this great energy and so did the crowd. I would like to catch one of thier shows again if they are around the L.A. area because they were so good live better than expected.

The Horrors are everything that a good concert should be and more. The intensity of their music and the scope of their stage presence only fully emerge when you see a live performance. Though I have seen them open for another band, this was the first headlining concert I had attended, and it surpassed all of my expectations. The band has dj experience, so the order of their setlist was impeccable. With the benefit of a full set for this concert, the Horrors were able to give a taste of their first album "Strange House" along with the entirety of "Primary Colours", which showcased their eclectic sound and knowledge of musical genres. Even the long, slow song "I Only Think Of You," which seems like an unlikely concert set choice, proved musically intricate and nuanced enough to make for a compelling live performance. As a bit of a side note, I came to appreciate Joshua's skills at guitar distortion. I found Rhys and Tom's instrument swapping refreshing as well.

Caught The Horrors at New York City's Bowery Ballroom. The Crocodiles were a fantastic opener. When The Horrors took the stage the mix was off (and remained so for the entire show). Guitars were too low and keys were too loud. The set consisted of Primary Colors and an encore of Suicide's Ghostrider (although an excellent choice it lacked the spirit of the original). I was extremely disappointed that they did not play anything from Strange House. It's way too early for them to shrug off that fantastic album. Also, singer Faris Badwin appeared very reserved--compared to previous performances. But, Spider Webb and Joshua Third more than made up for it. Check'em out and see what yyou think.

I bought tickets to see THE HORRORS NOT THE BLACK ANGELS. The show, after all, is called The Horrors AND The Black Angels, and not vice versa. I made the mistake of assuming that the amazing, well-known band called The Horrors was going to play AFTER the Black Angels. The Black Angels were horrible, and it wasn't until I was halfway through their performance that I realized I had arrived too late and completely missed The Horrors. The poster for this show even featured The Horrors. I'm completely baffled, disappointed and angry that I wasted my time and money. I was looking forward to seeing The Horrors for weeks and instead had to sit through a torturous hour of The Black Angels. I was bamboozled into thinking that The Horrors was the headline. I'm furious and wish I could get a refund.

The horrors are alright. The band was pretty tight well together.I was impress with the lead singers interaction with the guitarest solo.It was the best part of the set.Besides the singers appeal,I have never seen such well dressed men.Very handsome and so on I am sure their fans can put the rest.Alot of em.It was alright. Now the black angels were my favorite.I loved every thing about their sound.I wish I could re visit that night once more.It was perfect and insert every positive word to describe the black angels.Though they weren't as dancy as the horrors(how interesting do they dance, like prancing lemurs on ecxstacy)the crowd was doing the moving and shaking for them.Moon duo was amazing as well.Make sure to take a listen to those two dynamic duo.Its like the wonder twins only one looks like a bearded wizard and one is his accomplice.Over all, this is for the horrors review or something, but this was my first concert and I can't shut up about it.So that means it was fantastic.Really.But what the heck do I know.It was my first time and it was the best. And I was not under the influence of anything.Only groovyness. That made me temporarily death for two days.Worth it.

We went for the Horrors, We are huge fans of theirs and have seen them numerous times including opening for Florence & the Machine in England recently which was not disappointing at all. We enjoyed the show minus: A. all the people who apparently go to big shows to talk about themselves the entire time and try to passive aggressively push you out of whatever spot you may have found for yourself.....while never shutting their uninteresting traps for a millisecond. B. The Black Angels went on after the Horrors and were awful (just my opinion as I have heard their brand of rambling psychedelia too many times and it bores me to tears). Not that big of a deal except there were no horrors encores. Bottom line?...The Horrors did their new album and it was excellent and we got to get back to Santa Barbara at a reasonable hour.....would have enjoyed some of our faves from the Horrors first and second albums....

The one star is perhaps unfair. The truth is that I will never know how good or bad The Horrors were. The reason? The mixing was so utterly diabolical that I simply couldn't tell. There was a guy whose fingers kept zooming up and down the fretboard of his six-string; but what sound it produced, I couldn't tell. There was a guy fiddling around with a keyboard; but, except for occasional deafening salvoes of noise that sounded like an out-of-control Stylophone, I would be utterly at a loss if I was called upon to explain to a jury what he was doing. There was a bass, yes. And drums; yes, there were drums up the wazzoo! And a guy crooning -- though it mostly sounded as if he were singing through twenty sheets of White Cloud. So what did I hear? The Good Lord only knows. There were a few songs that I recognized at the start. But this gig managed to notch up a first for me in a concert-going career that now spans four decades -- the mixing actually got worse as the gig went on. And it's not as if The Music Hall of Williamsburg is a difficult venue -- it's not cavernous or echoey, and it fills up nicely with nice, warm, soft bodies. So, lads! The message is clear! Sack the losers on the mixing desk and, next time, I might be able to form a view on what your gig was like! (And, yes, I stood right next to the mixing desk.)

Overall, the show was ok. I was more fascinated with the effects the band was using. I don't necessarily think the band is hiding behind the electronics but it's great to see Josh interact with all his pedals. I think they have a great sound. Reminiscent of 80's with a twist of early 90's shoegaze rock. They try to make noise which is cool but going to so many Sonic Youth shows, The Horrors attempt at noise just can't compare.

Seeing a band of this level of musicianship, innovation, and stature in tiny club was an amazing treat. They are top notch musicians playing with passion and precision. There was a thick wall of sound, layer upon layers of textures, rhythms, and sampled sounds to make it a real sonic delight. I expect really big things from these guys - they are the real deal! The concert featured them playing mostly from their last two albums, both of which are excellent. Among the songs were Sea within a Sea (an absolutely gorgeous rocker with multiple tempo changes and climaxes) , I Can See Through You, Still Life (the single from the new album) and the highlight of the show - Moving Farther Away. This last one was just glorious - building and cresting, cresting and building, with lots of lovely sonic layers and surprises while also rocking at a very high level. The drums (Joe Spurgeon) and bass (Rhys Webb) really set a fabulous foundation, leaving the guitar (Joshua Hayward) to move in lots of different directions, while the keyboards(Tom Cowan) reference everything from 1960's era organ glissandos to 1980s pop to cutting edge sonic experiments. And the vocalist - Faris Badwan - may be the star of the show. He has a very haunting, and yet emotive voice that focuses it all into a powerful, sum is greater than its parts, experience. The tiny club limited them in some ways - not much of a light show or anything else. The sound was good for a small club, and the crowd was warm, but didn't seem like they were very familiar with the band. If you get a chance to see these guys, do it! Pretty soon they'll be selling out big stadiums.

This was my first time seeing them. The night started out with me meeting two of my oldest friends from high school for sushi and bento and then went to the the theater around 8. The show didn't actually start for an hour so we walked around Wilshire. At 9 we got in line to see the opening band. They sounded great and their presentation on the stage was a nice series of projected visuals on a scrim behind them. I did think they were kind of a strange paring opening for The Horrors (my friend texted me after a few minutes that the Stepkids should have been adopted and should leave the stage immediately!) After about 40 minutes opening band left the stage and the sound engineer for The Horrors stepped into the sound booth. We stood next to him the entitre time and could easily see the set list for The Horrors. (kinda cheating) At 10 PM sharp The Horrors took to the stage! They opened with, surprise- "Changing The Rain" and from then on they alternated between songs off Skying and their second album, Primary Colours. They ended with my favorite track off Skying, "Moving Further Away". I was a tiny bit disappointed that they didn't play anything off Strange House, but overall they were amazing. It was nice to see them live finally; Farris is a born frontman and the rest of the band all looked like they were having a blast up there! A perfect evening to be sure!
