I've seen this band multiple times and they just get better with time. The tightness and punch delivered by Soulive was on full display at this show. And a real treat to see them in a smaller venue like The Paradise.

Is there a more impressive trio playing today? Is there a genre of guitar Krasno hasn't mastered? Only the icy rain storm kept me from a second night in Hartford, CT.

The rustic overtones almost ruined my night. When they covered "wrecking ball" I almost hung myself off of the balcony. Thank god Soulive is so talented. They saved my life.

An unforgettable show! The musicians all seemed pumped to be there together and were sending out great vibes. It was really a huge celebration. The venue was small and personal. Couldn't have asked for a better night. Even the rain and mud added to the fun.

What more could you expect from these 3 acts? They KILLED it at the Fillmore that night. If you've never seen either of these 3 live, you're missing out. Get on it!

The music was great, all the musicians are top notch. My only complaint is that it was supposed to start at 8pm and the first band did not go on until 9:30. Soulive went on at 10:35 and we had to leave close to midnight and Lettuce had not gone on yet.

A thoroughly funk-starved mob of approximately 800 turned out Tuesday night here in Portland Oregon, to feast on a big helping of funk / jazz / soul from this crew from the Northeast. OPENERS: Break Science- The essential DNA is here for something rhythmically dynamic. Live beats (ala a pretty trick drummer) and hard breaks (ala a hard drive). Zero for stage presence, they do succeed in modestly warming up the house. Think of a lukewarm set from, say, Z-Trip, and you get the idea. If only they had his panache. Soulive- They took the stage with suave confidence & proceeded to lay into enthusiastic crowd for the first 2 tracks. Make no mistake, the Evans brothers on keys & drums..and Krasno on guitar come to PLAY. This is groove-driven jazz / funk of the first order...and at wide-open throttle, this trio can musically growl like a Lambo. Nice tight pocket drums, wailing Hammond work & transcendent mellifluous soloing from Krasno work a definite magic. Only misstep in this set is a 3 song Beatles covers detour (which sucked the life out of a fairly hot room). They are worthy covers, they just don't belong in this set. Sticking to their core material, they are definitely top-shelf in their genre(s). HEADLINER: Lettuce- At the top of the bill for a REASON. Straight-up jazz / funk assassins, Lettuce goes right for the jugular, with no excuses, no apologies & no chaser. The horns & bass (the only things Soulive potentially lacks) are a welcome arrival...and nicely round out the mercilessly tight rhythm section. A bit like DMB, The Mothership & Phish in a 3-way collision with JB showing up as traffic cop.......every bit the funk / jazz groove attack that you'd expect, this crew solidly delivers. All-in, it's twenty odd bucks WELL spent. Only dings I'd give them were the rather "embryonic" set from Break Science, and the Beatles wanderings. Grade: "A" minus

Solid show all around. This venue sounds great. Soulive kills it, and just when you think these three guys are enough, they bring out the big guns for the Lettuce set. Fun cameos from Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger. One bummer was that I upgraded to a pit ticket at the box office, but they didn't check tix for the pit so it was too packed to enjoy the show from there for most of the night.

The opening act, Break Science, was way too loud. Guys, we don't like it no matter how loud you are. Turning it up more isn't going to change that. The guy on the laptop (yeah, that was his instrument) was really into his music by the way he was grooving to it, unfortunately the crowd wasn't that into it. Maybe because they came to hear real musicians play jazz and funk, not two guys mess around with electronics. The second band, Soulive, was absolutely amazing. All three of them are so talented, I was blown away. It was my first show and won't be my last. Then it got really strange... Lettuce, the funk band came on... they sounded good mainly because the band includes the guitarist and organist from Soulive. The horns were a nice touch as well. But I don't understand the two little fellas... the one on guitar was so-so but doesn't come close to Kraz, the guitarist from Soulive, and the little guy on bass.. omfg! That guy was such a clown... cut your hair and do less blow before the show please! It didn't look like he was playing anything... the organist was playing the funky bass lines. The midget with the bass was just dancing around like an idiot, pretending to play sometimes and making stupid hand gestures at people in the crowd. He was like a special ed kid or something, way too excited to be up there. You could tell he thought he was the SHlT and thought everybody loved him. His stage presence was way off and a distraction. Meanwhile the skilled musicians on the stage are totally humble. I don't know why they are involved with that clown on the bass. Must be a pity project or something. As for the venue, the drinks were expensive and security made sure no one had too much fun which was unfortunate. People still managed to sneak some good times on the smokers patio ha ha ha.

The most unfortunate part of the show was the late start by Soullive. They didn't get on stage until almost 1045, which means for those that take the train into the city were not able to listen to them as long as they would like. But what I did hear was great, and they are definitely a good band to sit and jam out to.

First song was great. Beatles were boring. If another beatles song had been played we were planning on leaving. Thankfully Karl denson came on stage to fill a definite void. Royal family member Ryan Zoidis was a great addition too. Soulive is one of my favorite bands but I think portland is ready for another family member ... LETTUCE please!!!

I love live music and listening to talented musicians. I've been to The Roxy in the past to see Raul Midon, and the focus was the music. With Soulive, I think the focus was the club scene and selling alcohol - judging by the HOURS I stood and listened to recorded music - and that was unfortunate. Doors opened at 8PM, but Soulive didn't start playing until nearly 11PM. There were a couple of great songs, followed by maybe five Beatles covers. If I had been listening to a CD, that would have been fine. But I was there to hear Soulive! Almost four hours into the evening, I had heard only a few songs of the band I had made the effort to see, and finally near midnight, I gave up and went home. It was my first attempt to see this band after being so impressed with their recorded music. I was looking forward to it very much, and it was really disappointing. Soulive, you are too good to act like a club/cover band - you should be the main attraction, with the professionalism to carry it off.

Easily the best funk/jazz/RnB show I have ever seen. The night consisted of three sets: first the singers solo work, second a jam with Lettuce/ Talib Kweli/ and a bit of Scofield, and a third consisting of Soulive themselves with special guests Warren Haynes and John Scofield. Each show was great. The Lettuce horn section was one of the tightest funk projects I have ever seen. Everyone was dancing and the sound was great. However, since the set descriptions were so ambiguous, half the audience left after the second set, thinking the show was over or that there was nothing else to see. By this time, the whole show felt like a marathon of music, however it was all worth it in the end. Soulives performance with John Scofield was legendary. One of the most amazing concert jams I have ever seen. When they brought out Warren Haynes (who was not originally on the bill), everyone freaked out; we knew we were at something special. I highly recommend seeing Soulive live especially if you enjoy funk, jam music. Great show, except for the set ambiguity.

This is my third time I've experienced one of the funkiest bunch of muscians since my Pfunk in their prime days. The band was tight. I can't beleive the website said they had 3 days of rehearsals ... I am past my Rager days. but the way these guys feed off the audience is awsome These guys do it all, as reflected by the level of musicians that seek them out to jam, John Scofileld and Warren Haynes ... are you kidding me? Kid me some more please....Big Sam, Maurice Brown, Christian Scott, Rashawn Ross, et al! I went home to my lovely wife (who shared my first Soulive experience with Joshua Redman) to rave over the show. I spent Sunday watching football with volume down and playing all of my Soulive CD's. The party did not stop ...my knee's are aching and my back's still quaking from all my ass shaking. What a weekend! Eric, Neal, and Alan, thank you once again.

for those of you who are reading this and haven't seen lettuce, you already know you are missing out!!! Erik krasno on guitar will blow your mind! (and i'm a drummer!) not to mention the entire band is scary good, never missing a beat, and in complete sync the entire time. they read each others minds, and put on one of the best shows you can see. The ball was insane, complete w/ Maceo & robert randolph. Maceo alone is a crazy show but when you add a lil lettuce, its the funkiest salad that ever hit you upside the head! I cannot tell you how freakin awesome the show was, the general admission at terminal 5 is crucial. the floor was packed, but i got to about 5th row,. The outside smoking area is huge and has a double level, the inside has 3 floors all complete with balconies and bars. You really can't ask for a better night, especially if you like soulive/ lettuce/ & the entire Royal Family. If you don't, then you need to get involved!

Overall an excellent show. There was an acoustic opening act whose name I can't recall that went on way too long -- the first half, while not great, was much better than the second so the entire thing could have been half the time. Soullive was awesome, but due to the rather late start and long set, left only an hour for Lettuce before the midnight curfew. I would have preferred they nix the opening act and give me more Lettuce.

Soulive: first time seeing these guys live, they blasted Terminal 5 away. Really awesome, really looking forward to see them again. I was glad that it didn't turned out to be a karaoke show filled with golden oldie Beatles songs. Just the right dose between songs from their latest album and previous ones. Too bad Roy Hargrove gave us just a few bits and pieces of his awesomeness, did not really contribute to the whole. Support acts: - Raul Midon: AMAZING! When will be his big international breakthrough? I hope soon, because he would totally deserve it! - DJ something liked himself better than most of the crowd... - Rahzel was an amazing beatbox experience, I was just afraid that he would pass-out at a certain point because he went so fast... - Lettuce: really bad name for a band, without the Soulive support it wouldn't have been much: left because the music was boring...

Simply put, The Royal Family Ball was one of the best live shows I've seen in awhile and the amount of talent/musicians/entertainment at such a cheap price in today's economy is simply unheard of. Lettuce, Soulive, Nigel Hall, Talib Kweli, John Scofield, Nigel Hall, special appearance by Warren Haynes, the list simply goes on and on. I saw musical collaborations that I never would have dreamed of (Scofield, Haynes and Krasno on the same stage?? Yes please!) and was blown away by the amount of raw energy and fun being expressed by both musicians and audience members. I've seen Soulive a few times before but never anything like this, this really seemed like a celebration both for them and their fans, and I really, really hope they decide to do it again real soon.

Such a special evening. Hard to put into words. Just as it was advertised as having "very special guests", this show had a very special vibe. Thanks to everyone who made it happen

Show rocked!!! Whenever you go to see either Soulive or Lettuce you are guaranteed to have a good time and hear some awesome music. Nigel Hall stole the show but all the guests rocked..John Scofield, Big Sam, Warren Haynes, Talib Kwali. Venue kicks ass, Bands kick ass, Show kicked ass.

This Soulive show was just OK. I have seen them without all of the extra guests and they absolutely rock. This show, however, they sounded a little muddy and sloppy. Not your typical Soulive tight. Bottom line though, I'm glad these guys are getting more press and publicity. They definitely deserve it and are fantastic musicians.

Not sure if words can accurately articulate how amazing this show was, but suffice it to say that this show all my (already lofty) expectations. Despite the acoustics at Terminal 5 being notoriously subpar, the funk shined through regardless.

Nigel Hall is new to me and I am and instant fan, he really has heart. Lettuce was very good followed by an amazing showing from soul live. It was just and extra when soul live was accompanied by vocals from Nigel Hall. Talib Kweli guest appearance was short and I thought could have been better. I do believe he was playing another show that night as well so that might have been why. I was disappointed ?uest love didn't show. It was advertised he would. All around good show.

What a well put together show of a lifetime. The ENERGY was pulsating on the whole West Side of NY. Horn section off the hook. Talib Kweli amazing. Lettuce ripped it. Peace, love and THANKS to: Adam Deitch in the POCKET all night, Big Sam, Sam Kininger, Zoid ,Kraz, Neal, Alan, Nigel, Schmeens, Baby Jesus, Christian Scott, Rashawn, John Scofield, Warren Hayes. For those who have never seen these cats perform you are truly missing live music and performance at its BEST! STIMULATING...................

Soulive has got the best beats in the universe, and Kraz dominates with his jazzy classic funk. Their skills are impossible not to dance all over the floor to. I loved being at this event! The James Brown tribute was an incredibly tasty second act.

Soulive was so tight. Nigel sounded great doing James brown the first night. I just wish the second set was longer on friday night. Overall it was a fantastic show and my ears are still ringing 14 hours later.

Soulive and Lettuce were amazing but my time was ruined by the awful VIP section tickets I purchased. They were absolutely not worth the extra money. You couldn't see well from the VIP section and there were hardly any seats. They didn't give you many of the things they promised or, like the drinks, made it seem much better when it was advertised (said they'd give you champagne at midnight but only gave you a free drink ticket which you had to wait for at the over crowded bar). The only cool thing was the autographed poster but they were already signed by the time you got there. VIP = Not worth it!!

Excellent musicianship, but could have done without the massively intense bass levels. The speaker system was for a venue 3 times the size. Other than that, Kraz and gang didn't disappoint, and never do.

Wow, I can't believe I just saw the exact same soulive and lettuce shows two nights in a row. The played the same lettuce sets, soulive sets, and even the encore was identical both nights. How dare they pitch the concerts as a two night event. I can't believe that bands like soulive and lettuce, who have many songs in their line up would do that. The band members should be ashamed for putting on duplicate shows. Who would think that duplicate shows are a good idea? Thank god for the copious amounts of herb I smoked during the show, otherwise I would have been miserable. Break science was dank.
