Mastodon

MASTODON IN CONCERT: Inspired by the ‘90s ascendance of new wave American metal bands like Pantera and Biohazard, Mastodon hit the ground running in 2000, quickly establishing themselves as one of the foremost metal acts of the 21st century. Their unique brand of sludge metal and intricately crafted odysseys held much promise for audiences seeking new horizons in metal, and the band delivered big with highly conceptual albums and electrifying live performances. With news of a new album in the works, Mastodon are primed to melt more faces on their 2014 tour. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Formed in Atlanta in early 2000, Mastodon released two EPs before making their album debut with 2002’s Remission.

Nothing but an awesome 2 hour set of mind-blowing, amazing Mastodon. Closing w/ "Steambreather" was choice but they also played "Colony of Birchmen." Incredible.

Russian circles opened and in my opinion stole the show! So brilliant. Next up was eagles of death metal. They were a lot of fun! Brent Hinds of mastodon played the first song and it was superb. The band had a blast you could tell. Then we hear the mighty Mastodon!! They were so tight and heavy! They played a good mix of songs spanning their career. Most of their new album which is insanely great was played. Would have like to have heard some more songs from leviathan! Overall and excellent time.

I've been a big Mastodon fan since the beginning thanks to my son, Asa, & the fact that Brent is from our hometown. They are always super tight. I have never been disappointed at any of their shows. The sound was incredibly crisp & clear & loud but not painful...perfect! All three bands rocked the house. This was the 3rd time we've seen this show & it is awesome each time. In short, I highly recommend Mastodon, EODM, & Russian Circles, & this venue as well. We're looking forward to seeing more shows here. ✌

I have seen Clutch 4 times and Mastadon 3 times, and this was my favorite show for both of them. I have never seen either of them outdoors so it was great! I was able to make it up to the front and see them very closely. Had a blast!

This was my first outside show at AE and it was cool... but no encore? Is there a city ordinance or something about how late outdoor shows can go Pittsburgh? It seemed that Clutch got rushed off the stage. Maybe I was just having such a good time that it seemed short? Either way, Clutch was awesome as always can't wait to see them in Bethlehem on Friday..

Great show! I wish the stage was higher. Luckily I got a great spot up front. Other times I've been stuck in the back at the Palladium which is horrible because you cannot see the stage.

Loved the band's music and presentation. sound quality was off though. Seemed the sound man was stuck in the 70's with all bass drum and the rest buried in the mix. Need more vocals out front and more guitar especially on solos. Big drums and buried rest is not good considering the quality of modern sound equipment. I remember this being an issue long ago, but it seems the new era of sound techs have gone backwards. Better mix would have made for a much better show. Lights and set design were fantastic.

This was a must-see show. Two excellent, if commercially unappreciated, bands rocking one of the finest venues in California. On a Tuesday night no less (we drove 100 miles one-way). Had never seen Mastodon and as powerful as they are in the studio, their live performance should've made them the opener. Clutch was powerful.

A combination of Clutch and Mastodon was a wonderful pairing, with each band performing a full set. The Burton Cummings Theatre should have been a great venue with tight sightlines: our seats were in the first balcony. The band performances were fine - I've seen Clutch many times and this was a normal show for them. Mastodon's stage and light show was better than expected and the multiple singers was a treat. However, the sound quality and lack of ventilation in the venue was so bad that it ruined what should have been a great show. While the volume was contained just about perfect for this type of music, the mix was just not good. Drums far too loud (and I m a drummer!), vocals lost, lead guitar lost, bass indeterminate. The entire sound mix seemed to be a low end wash, which I feel was partly the fault of the venue s shape and acoustics. I was worried about Mastodon sounding this way their recorded music is crisp and relies on a clean mix to allow the listener to understand the complex songs. Unfortunately the only way I could tell there were 2 guitars and a bass was to watch the band s hands to see what they were playing otherwise as I said it was a muddy mess. The other thing about the theatre was heat built up fast within the hall and collected in pockets of which one was the lower balcony. No ventilation within the space so it was a horrible heat box for both main bands. Solid B++ for the bands, D- at best for the venue.

I loved the show in SanFran, hope to see these guys again! Only downers were the sound--make it too loud, and the music becomes blended together--and the fact that they did not play their entire new set of songs, only half or less were new :( But killer show, and I will definitely see them again!

This is my third time seeing Mastodon, and it's amazing every time. Had a seat from the left of the stage, so I didn't get to see Brann any besides the end, but that's okay. Seeing them is surreal every time since I've LOVED their music for years. Got to hear a couple hits from their first album, Remission, which would be Mother Puncher and March of the Fire Ants, and it blew me away. First time also hearing The Wolf is Loose and Colony of Birchmen, from what may be my favorite album from them, Blood Mountain. Out of the three times I've seen them, this was perhaps the most aggressive performance of Brent Hinds yet, given the aforementioned songs played. I'll be wherever they are again next time they're in Nashville.

The line up of Russian circles, the eagles of death metal and mastodon promised a great show. Having seen them all at least once before, I knew I was going to have a good time no later what. It by far past any expectations I could ever have placed on it and it was fun. I would recommend this show to anyone if they come to your town. Each band alone is worth your time to check out, let alone putting them all together. The extra element of fun was the venue. Not the typical place for mastodon to play, but they destroyed it just like any of the other places I have been lucky enough to see them. As they continue to put out great music they still look like they are having fun too. The setting just made it different but in some cases where us regulars are getting to the point we want the seats. It really made Russian circles very enjoyable as they seemed to put us in a trance with the awesome sounds they got out of the room it really was a powerful thing. Eagles of death metal. All you need to know is that you need to see them live. They are a joyous celebration of rock n roll. Before the show I passed Jesse out on the street and he said hello like he knew me. Said see you inside and away they went. When he came back he actual went to the front door and hung out taking pictures with people. Just a top notch guy who leads one of the greatest rock n roll bands in your lifetime. They are devilish loud fun. Great band. Perhaps one of the more unusually highlights was at the end of the night was when Brann brought his mother out as it was mothers day. It was a really touching moment that was a little out of place as was Taft theatre presence as the bands all looked like they had ad much fun playij g in such an odd venue making the entire night for me a beautiful experience. Thank you boys.

Mastodon was great. Everything you might expect; power, technical prowess, beautiful harmonies, haunting lyrics. But the opener (eagles of death metal) was nothing like Mastodon. I did not care for them nor would I have expected to see an act like that with Mastodon.

Russian Circles was the opening band and are highly underrated, I doubt most people realized what they were seeing, and most weren't even present yet. I personally think they should headline tours as people who saw them tonight might take 10 years to digest their magnitude.

Showed up to the Taft Theatre just in time for the first song of Eagles of Death Metal (my new favorite band!). The show was electric, but the crowd was subdued compared to what I experienced a year before in Indianapolis. Half the balcony was sitting down, and remained sitting even through Mastodon. For a metal show sitting down is pretty lame, and I was standing in the balcony and some girl came up to me and "hit" me on back and said "can you please move or sit down so we can see"!! Go home and go to BED. Otherwise, Mastodon is a force to be reckoned with and I will stand and rock with them anytime...

The lineup, venue setup for this show and the experience had were fantastic. Russian Circles was an amazing band that I had not seen live before. Seeing them live is a totally different animal than listening to their records and the lighting used at the Taft really enhanced the experience. Eagles of Death Metal are consummate showmen/women and injected a nice boost of high energy rock n'roll. Mastodon closed the show with a fantastic mix of songs from the whole catalog along with a healthy dose of the new record. The sound quality was great and all in all this was one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen and I have seen a lot...

I have seen many of these bands before, and as usual they were amazing. The venue was absolutely horrendous though. It seemed as though they were completely unprepared for the amount of people that were coming. I missed the first opening act while standing in line, which I did for over an hour. I even missed the beginning of the second band due to their horrible line. Inside, getting food also required missing the music, so I opted out. The merch line was equally awful. If the bands hadn't been so amazing, this event would have been a total disappointment. I will not be going to the Electric Factory's outdoor shows again.

Mastodon is the most consistent band I have ever seen. They continually crush it! They hit every album with their setlist, from Remission to Emperor of Sand. And they closed with March of the Fire Ants which I've heard them close with before but it never gets old! Eagles of Death Metal were also awesome. Russian Circles the opening band put on a show that is almost impossible to follow correctly. So the show started on a huge note. Eagles of Death Metal came out next and had a really energetic show that pumped the crowd. It was funny and happening. They played a cover of David Bowie's Moon Age Day Dream and did justice to his work. Mastodon came on and learned us all on the fundamentals of rock and metal. See the show.

I've seen Mastodon a zillion times, I was blown away by how great they sounded. It was the best I've seen them outside their first Crack The Skye tour. Brent was on point and I've seen him very not on point. He looked totally sober. Vocals were on point for all 3 of them. It was also great seeing them play so many classics, especially from Blood Mountain. Gojira hits like a hammer and puts on a killer show (per the usual), Opeth was excellent, definitely going to buy some of their stuff, lastly Mastodon was on point. This was one of the best overall events I have been to. I have seen Clutch several times so it goes without saying that their live show was excellent. I have been a fan of Graveyard for several years & I could not believe they were a part of this ticket. I would have come just to see them. They were great as well. As for Mastadon, I only had one studio album & did not even know that very well. I was not sure what to expect from them. Their sound and the feel that band coveted was unlike anything I have experienced. I was very surprised how good this band is live. If I ever see Mastadon coming near me in concert, I will do wahever I can to make sure I do not miss them. So, as far as I am concerned, this show was like seeing 3 headliners.

A great performance from Mastodon. I would give 4.5 stars, because it was not perfect, but I'd rather rate higher than lower for this band. They are very good live. They played the majority of their most recent album, Crack The Skye. They were epic. After they finished their set, they continued with many songs from almost all of their previous albums, including Crystal Skull, I Am Ahab, and Iron Tusk. They finished off with an encore of March of the Fire Ants and Blood and Thunder. Although they didn't deviate much from what you hear on the records, they did play it all well, and they should be heard live. Audio/visual was good. I didn't expect much from Mastodon, but they had some video and "moving pictures" which were good to look at during the show. It added to the performance. Valient Thorr, Baroness, and Between the Buried and Me all opened for them. I missed most of Valient Thorr unfortunately. Baroness was fantastic (maybe just as good as Mastodon), and Between the Buried and Me was decent as well. The merchandise at this show is quite good, with plenty of tour-only t-shirts, vinyl and other items avialable. The venue was sold out, or close to selling out, and the crowd was in good spirits the whole night. The Vogue has great drinks as well, and the sound quality is great if you find the sweet spot. Balcony seating is nice if you can get it as well.

So I'm not sure why they have assigned seating since everyone ended up standing in the aisle and up to the stage. Acoustics were good. Bar had good service. Russian Circles opened to put on a dark, moody instrumental set, followed by Eagles of Death Metal. EoDM had fantastic energy, hyping up the crowd, very entertaining antics. Mastodon took the stage last and played a excellent selection spanning their catalog. Two problems: - Their sound man needs an adjustment. The sound was SO loud that everything distorts in my ears. The quality of the sound was awful. Crackly in the treble range, and everything was muddled because of how loud it was. Their music is so tight and well defined and amazing, but this sound guy just KILLED it. Over loud, distorted, and messy. If I plugged my ears, I could tell the sound was good, it was there, they had it. The sound guy should be fired. It's a nice venue, and there's no reason the sound couldn't be everything: loud, clear, and quality! - They played a few things from Crack the Skye and from Emperor of Sand (which I love), but then focused the rest of the show on mediocre boring songs from the rest of their albums. Really?? Because Crack the Skye and Emperor are great iconic amazing albums. And stuff like Leviathan and The Hunter get a little... hmm... boring. But maybe it was because a.) i'm unfamiliar with those other albums, and b.) the sound quality was so awful I couldn't enjoy these new (to me) songs... I came to this show so excited. And walked away like 'meh', so disappointed. I was a huge fan, listened to crack the skye every night for months, and now I just kind of feel blah about the whole thing. This show just failed to impress, or even make me smile. So sad.

Mastodon was excellent! So heavy, so epic. A relentless attack on my eardrums. Truly a Metal lover's show. Some of their songs seems to be better tuned for the small venue than others. Maybe they are too loud of a band for small confines? Love the guys!
