Matthew Good

Consistent, candid, honest and forthright about everything from life to music, Matthew Good is one of few Canadian musicians that requires no introduction. In 2007, that candidness revealed itself as Hospital Music, an album dedicated to the ordeal Matthew Good was thrust into when dealing with bipolarity. Using the creativity of music to work through the revelation and realism of that diagnosis, Good and his followers formed an unbreakable bond based on what proved to be one of his most impeccable albums.  In 2009, Matthew Good finds him in an enviable place: alive, feeling fine and more inspired than ever before with the release of his 11th album entitled, Vancouver on October 6th.

This was the first time I was able to see Matthew Good live. Have been a fan for years. But, let me tell you, there is nothing like seeing him live! I knew every song he played (which he had a great set list btw), but getting to hear him (he sounded superb) and see the passion he has for his music just put his songs on a whole new level. Now when I'm playing his music, I APPRECIATE it even more! His band also held their own and were simply fantastic (Kudos to his drummer!) If I had the money, I would definitely see him everytime I could. I live in Charleston, SC and he doesn't get down south much.... My daughter and I went to NYC specifically to see him and he truly did not disappoint!!

I was so excited when Matt opened the show with my favorite song from the new album, Vancouver. The set list started with "The boy who could explode" and then the band went right into "Load me up", the very first song I'd ever heard by the Matthew Good Band. I was stoked by the opening of the show and my elation continued through the rest of the set. Matt joked about being on the small stage and falling into his drummer, while a Dave Matthews cover band was playing the main stage. I agreed with Matt that this seemed an injustice that a cover band would take precedent over a real band. None the less, I love the intamacy of a small show and being able to be in the second row right in front of one of my favorite artists of all time. The night was wonderful as Matt and his band closed with tracks from the first album, Beautiful Midnight.

The show was just as good as the vancouver show at massey hall. I will never forget the amazing hospital music show that I saw at massey hall it blew me away he play the entire album and all of his greatest hits aswell. I still have yet to hear carmalina in concert and hope that the next show I see that it might be in his play list. The only down side of the show is that is seemed to short and the guitar was a little over powering.

The bands that performed were very good & entertaining, No issues there. The fact that it turned out to be a stand up affair, although our tickets stated designated seating. was inhumane. The mens bathrooms were disgusting, as they were during the 2002 Caberat. Public transportation from the event was also very poor, with reports from friends waiting 2-3 hrs for a cab after the show.

This show was a blast!! I was fortunate to get into the M+ soundcheck and meet the band beforehand. All those guys are really cool and they have awesome chemistry on stage. The venue was a bit small, but it was still an amazing performance.

The only downside was the fact that he didn't come on 'til 2 and a half hours after the doors opened. However, he made up for it by putting on a good performance and going through the songs quickly so we could get the maximum amount in a short period of time (I still got 6 songs out of him before I had to leave, opposed to the opening band's 4...and his songs are significantly longer than theirs). He didn't waste his time talking to the audience and all songs sounded were album quality. He also played a lot of his classic songs from when he was with Matthew Good Band, which I wasn't expecting. The reason why I wouldn't recommend this for a friend though, is because it's more an event for die hard fans of Matthew Good. I don't think any average person, or any of my friends for that matter, would find this event entertaining. There was probably only about 50 people on the floor, if that, and it wasn't really a hopping venue. It was perfect for me, but I'm not into big concerts anyway...so I would only recommend this event to Matt Good fans and boring old fogies like myself...of which I have not encountered many.

What an amazing show! Matt Good's performance was one of the best live performances I have ever seen. He gave us 200% throughout the entire show. The Bowery Ballroom provided a cozy venue with great acoustics.

I saw Matt on the beautiful midnight tour not knowing who he was and was blown away. Saw him again in 2009 solo acoustic in Philly and was really inspired, especially being a singer/songwriter myself. Then this show, great venue, great band and a great performance. Thanks Matt. Hopefully see you again.

To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect, since so much of Matt's music is dark and moody. (I like it, just wasn't sure how it would translate to a live show). They set that straight with the opener "Silent Army In The Trees" (the song I'd most hoped they'd do!) and didn't let up until about six songs later, when Matt stopped to comment on the bizarre decor and ambiance. ("Early American Hellhole") The rest of the show flat out rocked - which I wasn't really expecting. This was no Rogaine tour - they were NOT just going through the motions and the crowd - though small- was into it. I'm an old fart - been going to concerts for 35 years and would easily rank this among one of the best I've seen.

Somehow this canadian icon has managed to stay under the radar in America, but attend one show and you can quickly figure out how he sells out stadiums up north. With a piercing , haunting and echoing voice, Matthew Good infuses emotion and commentary on the human condition into each carefully constructed masterpiece.

Well worth the low ticket price Matty Good mixed in his classics with his strong new stuff. The sound was perfect as is always the case with him - I've never understood why he's never really caught on in the U.S. as he is huge in his native Canada. Check him if you get the chance, he's got 8 cds out along with a hits compilation and a live CD.

The guy is a great singer and the band sounded tight. Hopefully Matt returns to Ohio and keeps this band together. They definitely have good chemistry. A lot of energy in the room and a nice crowd despite the fact he appears to be almost unknown in the Cleveland area.

For those of you that have seen Matt Good, you'll pretty much understand when I say that nothing could make it a bad show. Talent, energy, intensity - it was all there. I know their own sound/light guys weren't there and it really made a difference on the show visually, but not otherwise. I'm used to dramatic light sets with the impact of his music, so this was just a bit toned down. It took nothing away from the performance though. The one thing that did detract from the performance was the number of sloppy drunk, loud, fools stumbling around yelling requests out during songs that were currently being played. Waving bottles in the air, dropping bottles on others. You know, the real classy types. He made a few comments but I don't think they got it. Which makes me smile b/c that is classic Matt Good. I do wish he would have come out for a second encore however when they left the stage the first time, I don't think anyone really heard what he said - and he was signing off for the night - we all just kind of stood there. Eventually we got a bit rowdy but after a couple songs, they left and he had no intention of returning. Neither would I if I thought I had such a tepid response. I will say that the clarity of the mike/whatever when he left was not audible, hence our confusion. It was not intentional that we ingnored the fact he was leaving. He's really going to think we suck here. Oops, technical difficulty! I've seen Matt and his band (as well as the acoustic shows) and without fail, he makes every moment worth it. Between his passion and Stu's energy, it's something that consumes you from the inside out; pleasingly so. On three occasions I took friends that had never heard of them, including last night, and they have all been full on amazed by the show. Now... off to search for my next MG show...

I've saw Matt's acoustic show last year and I also attended his last appearance at SAH. This show left me feeling that 2 out of three still isn't bad. It was short, not very enthusiastic, and I feel Matt seemed to go thru the motions. Saying that, everyone is entitled to be average (and not phenommenal) at times. He is one of the few artists I would pay to see, so I guess I expected the best of Matt, and by comparing seeng him with his band 6yrs ago at St. Andrews, this show left me wanting more. He is very underrated and I will still continue to pay to see him the next time, chances are I won't be let down.

I certainly hope Mr. Good recorded this show and is planning to release it on DVD. The recording has to include the opening band Mother Mother as Mr. good and bandmates were part of their performance as well. It was a riot watching Matt Good and band play catch across the stage while Mother Mother performed. Mother Mother later exacted revenge on Matt. The between song commentaries by both bands were fun and often hilarious. All in all this was a great concert. Massey Hall is a beautiful venue but I had a lot more fun seeing Matt in a general admission setting rather than a more formal venue like Massey Hall. However, the lighting was very cool and the sound was crisp.

The Matthew Good show in Vancouver was so much more than I thought I would experience. The venue was small, so I had an awesome seat, second row balcony, dead center seat. He played all my favorite songs and then some. This is the first time that I have seen him with a band and they were tight and had great energy. He talked a lot during the show, which I loved. I feel like it gives me a bit of insight into who the performers really are when they are chatty during shows. The crowd was very low key and subdued, that surprised me. I had a great time despite the audience. It was worth every penny to go up there and see him perform. Vancouver is a great city and any excuse to go up there is good for me.

Let me start out by saying I've been a fan of Matthew Good since the "Underdogs" album came out. It wasn't until this show that I finally got to see him live. Needless to say I had great expectations. I have to say that Matt delivered. It was a solid show and his band was amazing. You may ask yourself why only a 4 star rating? The reason is simple and selfish of me. I wanted to hear more of his older material. Don't get me wrong I like the most recent album "Arrows of Desire". However, I am really a fan of the Matthew Good Band Albums and a good portion of Matt's early solo albums. So I would have liked to have heard more of that material. I do however understand his want to play his new material. It all sounded excellent. Being this may be the first and only chance I may have gotten to see him there were new songs I could have done without and old songs I would have rather heard. In all It was a great show! I'm hoping to catch him again sometime in the near future!

Far and away, Matthew Good is one of the greatest singers of our generation, and he does not disappoint as a live act. There was no low point of his set; no moment when I thought to myself, "This is wonderful, but I'm getting ready to be done." Every song was gorgeous. He does a great job interacting with his audience as well, without it seeming forced or disinterested. Overall an amazing concert, and a definite "would go again in a heartbeat" for both me and my husband.

Matt Good was great. The venue was small but he carried the show with lots of great tunes and witticisms between the tunes. If only people would learn to shut up and listen to the music, it would have been outstanding. Plus, doesn't this guy sell out arenas in Canada? There were 150 people there, tops. Nice, intimate show. Well played, Matthew.

I'm going to be honest. I love Matthew Good Band, and when I found out that it was just him acoustic, I wasn't disapointed, but just anxious to see how it would be. I'm not lying when I say that this was one of the best solo acoustic shows I have ever seen in my life. I have been to hundreds of concerts, and we all know that some people just aren't as good live. Not the case at all with Matthew. He did amazing. He was great at singing and guitar, also a great entertainer with an awesome sense of humour. I would rate the over all preformance a 10/10. No complaints what-so-ever. Right on !!

Walked out 6 songs into Matt's set. 4th time I've seen Matt in Detroit, he obviously was not feeling well. Listless, boring and unemotional performance. Saw his acoustic set 2 yrs ago, had some punch is his voice and incredible guitar playing, not Sunday night. Overall, 42 yrs of concerts, below Poor, may go down as worst show I've seen. Waited so many years to finally see him live and he did not disappoint!!! He was pretty sick, but he never complained and still sang better than I could have imagined...he blew us away! Even though the venue was tiny and you could hear all the drunks talking over him, he didn't complain (almost wish he would have to shut them up). :-) I honestly don't know how long he played but it wasn't long enough for me...I could have stood there for hours and hours listening to him sing with just his guitar. He is also so gracious to his fans that even with being so sick, he still signed autographs after the show. It was a night that I will never forget!

One never knows what to expect Matt Good will play on any given night. Friday's NAC performance was no exception. At the 2009 NAC show after the Vancouver album he played every song on the album. So, I thought I would hear a large selection of songs from Lights of Endangered Species. Not so, Matt played a balanced selection of old, new and a few rarities. I guess hiring a horn and woodwind section can get expensive. Great concert, Matt's voice was in top shape, the band was tight and the sound in the NAC is phenomenal. The crowd on the other hand must have though the were at the opera not a concert. They sat through the whole night, even reluctant to stand for the encore.
