Sergio Mendes

SERGIO MENDES IN CONCERT:Bossa nova legend Sergio Mendes is a giant of the genre, as beloved for his classic hits as he is for his collaborations with contemporary artists like the Black Eyed Peas. Mendes has been bringing the rhythms of Brazil to the wider world for over half a century, continually innovating at his renowned live shows by incorporating hip hop and other modern styles into his sets. Fans of no-frills bossa nova need not worry, however — all the classic elements remain front and center at Mendes' electric concerts, from the samba rhythms and jazz instrumentation to the Carnival-inspired costumes. Hot off the heels of his 2013 tour dates, Mendes is set to rock audiences at the 2014 Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York.

It's been 49 years since I first heard Sergio Mendes with Brasil '66....and the tunes are still top notch! Sergio's sounds speak for themselves. But being the musical genius he is, he knew to update the tunes. Infusing funky/sexy saxophones, and adding some hip-hop here & there, he made the tunes more modern, while still holding on to the conga beats. I've been a fan since the 6th grade, when I would watch them on Shindig & Hullaballo. Easy to say...I'm a fan for life!!!

The Cobb Energy Center was a great venue for "A night in Rio". Eliane Elias was wonderful, soulful and in touch with her audience in spirit and history of the Bossa Nova sound! The musicians were all in tune with each other and made a complete scene. Outstanding drummer. Sergio Mendes is still so youthful and vibrant for his age. Most all of the talent with him supplemented the great musical numbers performed. H2O though seemed to me like he was in murky water...not perhaps really understanding the full history of Bossa Nova and appreciating it's beauty.

The event was beautiful. We had such a wonderful time. We loved the cheerful spirit of dancing with the whole audience. We missed, at the end, being able to say hi to Sergio Mendes and his CDs for purchase.

The full moon and the excellent weather were just the backdrop for a perfectly orchestrated and produced event. Pancho Sanchez was incredible, and I thought that Eddie Palmieri could not top him, but I was wrong, Sergio Mendes never stops amazing me with the way that he is always contemporary and classic at the same time. I have been a fan of all three for most of my life. I have always tried to keep up with their schedules, but sadly I have been unable to see them until last night. This was a 50th Birthday present from my sister and frankly the best I'll get. I don't think anything can top last night for me.. I am just grateful that we were able to get tickets-the day before.. Everything was perfect, even the amount of performance time for each seemed flawless thanks again, you guys. I will try harder now to find and see these great artists..By the way, H2O wasn't bad, and I thought the genre mix was interesting--definitely entertaining.

This concert is a blend of Jazz, Salsa and Bossa Nova leaving your soul confuse but your feet tired of dancing and your hands red of clapping. If you take your girlfrend or wife she'll be talking about it for weeks. Each artist gives the best of their song, the bands are great as some of the members perform solos or dances that adds to the exciement.

The overall evening was definitely upbeat, fun and enjoyable. However, I would put Poncho Sanchez as the star group, not Sergio Mendes. Mendes has added a rapper to his group.....okay.....not what I expected or wanted. Palmieri's sound was too disjointed for my taste...but Sanchez was outstanding.....good old latin jazz.

The music was excellent, the people fun around us but those benches need to be replaced and renewed. Also workers need to more stern with some smokers. Also who is H20, thought Sergio had more star power and would bring out like fergie or timberland.

The evening was romantic, funky and eclectic. Sergio Mendes was phenomenal as well as his band members. Eddier Palmieri was out of this world with his talent and inspired us all to want to become musicians or ensure that our children are exposed to music! Poncho Sanchez was lively, entertaining and we were fortunate to hear his new material which with out a doubt will be a success. What a treat!!!!!

It was great to see these 3 great Latin jazz masters on the same stage. Eddie still has all the vitality and energy when he first started, and Poncho is LA's reigning congero king who never disappoints. I will always be grateful to Sergio for introducing me to Brazilian music in 1966, but his shows have become somewhat predictable and formulmatic. I would like to see him stretch and explore his Brazilian roots. And call me a purist and old-fashioned, but introducing rap into the beautiful melodic harmonies of bossa nova is a perversion that I'm sure has Jobim rolling in his grave. It's nothing more than extraneous noise that adds nothing to the music, similar to adding graffiti to a fine work of art. Problem is, it sells but hopefully introduces the uninitiated to the true beauty of Brazilian music. Would have been nice to see the three interact and blend their styles together.

I don't know why the volume of the whole thing was so low, we could barely hear what Palmieri was saying on his mic when he addressed the audience. Poncho Sanchez was the first to perform and the best performance of the night. Palmieri's was alright and Sergio Mendes was a disappointment! I could actually see people standing up and leaving! The choice of songs was not a fortunate one for the weird mix of hits and mellow songs didn't allow the audience to ever get excited! And then they destroyed "Aguas de Marco" and the back vocals' wardrobe was hideous! Come on people, you were at the Hollywood Bowl, you can do better than that!!!! Have some respect for the people that went through the trouble to come and see you!

Another magical night at the Hollywood Bowl, this one featuring a whole salsa bowl of sounds from mind-blowing cool jazz to out-and-out partying. Poncho Sanchez and his band set the mood with some technically excellent, if derivative numbers spanning the Caribbean (including one that put a Latin spin on Motown). Eddie Palmieri's jazz combo was out of this world -- piano, sax and trumpet solos that are still with me more than 12 hours later. And Sergio Mendes and co were a hoot -- a throwback to 1970s Eurotrash chic with a samba beat that started out kitschy and ended up as a spectacle only the Bowl can pull off -- carnival dancers, hot pink dresses and muumuus, and rhythms that brought the entire ampitheatre to its feet. Just fabulous.

What a way to kick off my summer concerts! First we were wowed by Poncho Sanchez and his amazing ensemble. Then the pleasure for our ears continued as Eddie Palmieri followed. Finally, Brazil's jewel, Sergio Mendes, brought everyone to their feet as he wrapped up the talent-filled event. Besides the amazing rhythm and sounds, what I loved the most was the harmony amongst the diversity in the crowd. As one of the benefits of living in L.A., I loved seeing how Latinos, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Middle-Eastern (and more...) delighted in the talent of these men and enjoyed a spectacular concert under the stars. Can't wait to go back.

The sound was terrible, the choice of songs was very poor! They tried to mix it with classical Bossa nova with American rap and american classics from 80-th. But it did not work! The quality of singers was worse than in regular cruise ship band. Very disappointing, ne is just using his name to make money on the low-quality shows. Too bad...

The great Brazilian performer Sergio Mendes brought an all-star band to Bergen PAC in Englewood for one wonderful performance. Gracinha Leporace, his wife, continues to perform with him and display the blend of talents that has been their hallmark for decades. The excellent Brazilian percussionist, lead guitar, and bass guitar were joined by two Americans. There was no written program, but I think the other singer was Kate Hudson from LA, and the keyboardist/saxophonist/flutist was from Rochester. Always great to see a Legend in person!

Sergio Mendes has not lost a step in over 50 years. Loved the show. His band and the singers were great, although,no one can ever replace Lani Hall, in my opinion. Her voice is the voice of Sergio Mendes and for me always will be. Loved the hip hop influence also. Wish they had done more of their hits, though, like So many Stars , etc.

Music was fabulous. Great musicians in this band. His 2 female lead and back-up singers are very good. Sergio Mendez still has a decent voice. Most of his Bossa Nova hits were covered and left the audience in total music bliss. He incorporates some rap numbers, which seems to be an attempt to appeal to younger audiences; however, I am sure most of the audience come to hear Bossa Nova and not rap. For me, the inclusion of rap music is a distraction from the great Bossa Nova music he is known for. Nonetheless, this concert was musical joy to me and it was over too soon.

I am most fortunate to have experienced ( live!) the music I came to love as a child. The musical accompaniment was incredible. Sergio himself is a true legend in every sense. His timing was impeccable , voice is just as strong as on the records my parents played, and stage presence as big as a building. Even my heavy-metal husband was deeply touched by this once- in-a -lifetime show. The only complaint from me was the tragic reality that this venue was a dinner theater; hence , no dance floor !

Thoroughly enjoyed my evening listening to the great Sergio Mendes and Sheila E. Both are consummate professionals and enjoy entertaining their audiences, which is sometimes lacking in todays industry. They had a somewhat older audience participating, singing and dancing. Like James Brown, I would have to nickname Sheila E. as the "hardest working woman in show business". She truly cares about her craft..... Sergio was masterful on the piano

I have to report that I was not a Prince fan I understand that he might have launched shelia E into the limelight , the concert was great She let the audience share her love of music as well as that of her mentor .I would recommend tht if you can see her live go this cannot be said of Mr Mendes .I know he was never a singer, but neither is his aging female .if not for the voice and stage presence of the younger of the two females, It would have been a bigger failure

Sheila E. showed a wide variety of talent on drums, vocals and guitar as she performed her hits, songs of Prince and others. She was very engaging, had the audience dancing on the stage, and she engaged consistently with the crowd. This was one of the cases where the opening act was unexpectedly better than the main act. Sergio Mendes had a good idea that people would want to revisit the great Brasil 66 sound. Unfortunately, that great sound had softness, beauty and charm. The version at Westbury had shrill singing, no beauty and the inexplicable addition of rap versions of the most famous Brasil 66 hits. Talk about a combo that makes no sense... All in all a disappointment. I understand changing and adapting with the times, but the singing and rap addition made this concert much worse than expected.

I grew up hearing Sergio in the 70's!!! So when I found out he was coming to Honolulu...I made sure I did everything I can to get a front row seat! Looked forward to seeing him all summer...because I knew how "GREAT" he is with all his accomplishments! And I just love his music through the many years.. The younger generation don't have much of a clue about him etc...and not much of any promotions/advertising made obvious to his coming....so it wasn't a sold out concert like I thought it should! Maybe that's the reason why concert was short!?.. It opened up very casually...and he just started right into the heart of it!...the musicians/singers were just wonderful in everyway...and I was just on 2 clouds above 9 having to experience it all!!!BUT>>>before you got warmed up to get up and groove to his awesome music....it was over!???! :( ...it was just little over an hour!!!...I/we could have wanted more!!!....for the time...the money...and the effort planning to attend his concert etc..... Never the less!!!...in short ...im still so very glad I got a chance to see, hear and be near to that GREAT man with his timeless music....even if it was just a glimpse of a moment and time with him!!! It was all so AMAZING.. BUT...still to short of a concert!

The following is verbatim from a previous review from a concert goer who shares the exact sentiments that I did when seeing Sergio Mendes in concert at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA last evening. You wish to evoque the great times of brasilian rythms: samba, african samba and bossa-nova and go to a concert with Sergio Mendes, right? Wrong! Amidst the enjoyment of the concert, sudendy you get wounded with the inappropriate injection of rap. Yes, RAP!! I understand Mr. Mendes wants to atract young generations into the brasilian frlavors, but the mixture of rap with bossa is like mixing champagne with coke or as inflamatory as serving pancakes with hot peppers. To perpetuate the purity of the samba and bossa-nova and to maintain his reputation, Mr. Mendes needs to sanitize his show. When you pay a high price for a ticket to listen to the classic brasilian music you expect to hear that, not rap! I can listen to rap for free in any underground train station any where in the USA. I know that if Mr. Carlos Jobim would have been there he would have agreed with me. Very disappointing...not responsible for the spelling above. I want to add by saying how can you take the song The Look of Love and turn it into a rap song. That goes against everything that Brazilian music is all about, for that matter, any genre. I was totally embarrassed for the couple that we invited to go after they listened to Sergio Mendes' greatest hits CD. That convinced them to spend the $62 each for tickets. I had to apologize to them for not hearing what they expected to listen to. I'm sure that Lani Hall is happy not being a part of this tragedy. Don't get me wrong, I have been listening to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66, 77 and so on since I saw them in Sacramento in 1966 at Music Circus. I did not expect to hear this at all. :(

Excellent.Only disapointment was that I did`nt have my Lee Ritenour and Eliane Elias cd covers for autographs. As for Sergio,in 1969,here I was a ten-year kid and I saw Sergio on tv performing,"Mas que nada". I`ve been hooked on Brazilian music ever since.

Terrific show- actually two separate shows. Also, if you have not seen a show at NJPAC- it's a fantastic venue!

It was great to see these two amazing Brazilian musicians, Eliane Elias and Sergio Mendes, along with Lee Ritenour and Joe Lovano on the same night. Can't believe that Bossa Nova is 50! This music is timeless! Gracinha Leporace is an outstanding vocalist. A beautiful night of music.

NJPAC is a great place to hear music. The acoustics are beautiful. I go when ever they book Keith Jarrett and, of course, it's always fantastic. Recently, I went to hear "Jazz meets Samba." The first half of the performance featured Eliane Elias, Joe Lovano and Lee Ritenour with a smoking rhythm section. They all performed brilliantly, as you would expect from world class artists such as these. Their performance would rate at least 5 out of 5 stars from me. The second half of the show featured Sergio Mendez, who we all remember from Brasil '66. I realize that he has always been more on the pop side of the fence, but his band consisted of a bunch of inexperienced kids and the performance was on par with that of a second rate casino lounge act. Disappointing to say the least. I felt like walking out, but didn't. It was sort of like watching a car crash, you don't want to be there, but you can't look away. Sergio gets a half of a star from me, and even that is generous. However, the evening wasn't a total loss, as the first half of the show was inspired and worth the price of admission in itself. If I would have left at the intermission, my mood would have stayed elated for the rest of the night.

It's been a while since I took in a jazz concert, but I definitely chose one that will be remembered for quite some time to come by every attendee. Not only was Sergio Mendez as tremendous as when I saw him in California in 1966, while in the Marine Corps, but the host of accomplished musicians and performers throughout the evening were some of the best in the business.

I enjoyed the concert. He mixed the old with the new well. That really surprised me; but I was also surprised at the callousness with which I was treated by his manager. I purchased tickets for myself, my wife and two sick friends whom were visiting from out of town. One is on Dialysis 3 times per week. We had to make special arrangements to have one treatment while he was here; and his girlfriend is suffering from cancer and about to undergo a bone marrow transplant. I thought wouldn't it be nice if they could have a picture taken with one of their favorite artists. They became fans with the album Brasil 66 and have been following Sergio Mendes since that time. I called the box office twice, once the day before the concert and was instructed to call back because they had not arrived. I called again the following day at the time suggested and was asked to leave my name and phone number. No one called, so during the intermission I was directed to and spoke with the Concierge, Richard. I asked him if he could get me an audience with the manager. He stated that he did not know who that person was but if I would write out my request he would make sure that it got to the manager and to come back to the front desk at the end of the show. I came back to the front desk after the show; Richard informed me that he had not heard anything. I left the concert feeling very dejected. I could accept no but not to respond at all was in very poor taste. The saving grace was that I had not informed my friends of what I was attempting to do for them. otherwise, my rating would have been much higher.

This American girl had a great time with my Brasilero husband. However, he knew all the words to only one song. Sergio's music was popular when I was growing up here in America and so my husband didn't know a lot of those. Of course, we enjoyed the talent and skills of all the musicians! They were fantastic.

Sergio Mendes and his band were awesome. Brought back many fond memories and the addition of rap was unique and enjoyable. The sound was poorly mixed. The vocals were harsh and the whole bottom end was mushy. The sound guy tried to make it up with volume, didn't work.

Very disappointing...

Sergio Mendez has some great music to enjoy, with a great beat and lovely vocals. At least that is the way it used to be. This performance was so loud it hurt our ears! And, what is with a rap vocalist being a part of this quintessentially Brazilian experience. This was a big disappointment. Not at all what we expected from Mendez.

the attempt to merge Rap and traditional Sergio Mendez did not work. Warm up by Eleane Elias was an extremely pleasant surprise. The main show with Sergio Mendez was OK, but the addition of H2O pushed it into a slight disappointment. We were looking forward to this concert - would not recommend. We understand the attempt to merge in more contemporary music, but it simply didn't work for us.

Eliane Elias is a virtuoso, as comfortable with the jazz metier as the Brazilian...and they would literally switch between the two between measures. And her drummer may very well be the best I've ever seen...and I've seen hundreds, including Billy Cobham, Art Blakey, Jack DeJohnette, and other lesser known but still wonderful musicians. This guy was crazy good. Sergio Mendes put on a helluva show. Nice blend of new and old, classic and hip. They played a long time, did a couple of encores, seemed to really enjoy themselves, AND, we got to look at the luminous Katie Hampton all night. Yeow! Closing with an extended version of Mais que nada was really nice. We got to sing along. Fun.

Alpert & Hall are on the top of their crafts Alpert is by far todays best trumpet of Jazz, a Real master , very fine, very clear, each sound is there, defined with class and feeling. Lani sings with emotion and projection very few voices are able to reach, that she keeps when singing in Portuges. Sergio Mendes attempt to mix Hip Hop with Brasilian music is a "charade" only he believes. Sorry for his 3 singers; "Live at the Expo" with Lani Hall singing in that "Brasil '66", is still Mendes' best moment. .

A bit disappointed waiting for more old popular songs. This is my first time to watch them expecting to see them perform the old popular songs that they were known for. I was expecting Herb Alpert to perform Tijuana Brass songs but he mainly supported Lani Hall's singing. He did a very short medley of his popular songs. Same thing with Sergio Mendes and his segment was a bit short. Wish he did not do so many songs with H2O and just stuck with his old familiar songs. Although overall they were outstanding performers.
