Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff

JIMMY CLIFF IN CONCERT:Before there was Bob Marley there was Jimmy Cliff, the reggae pioneer widely credited with breaking the genre into the mainstream with his acting and soundtrack contributions to the classic 1972 Jamaican film The Harder They Come.  More than four decades  later Cliff continues to be at the genre's vanguard, taking home the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2013 for Rebirth, his first new album in eight years. Whether he's lending his iconic high tenor to protest songs like "Vietnam" or inciting sing-alongs with his beloved cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," Cliff never fails to electrify audiences with his authentic performances, and his upcoming tour dates will be no exception. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Jamaican-born Jimmy Cliff began writing songs while still in primary school, scoring his first hit at just 14 with local favorite "Hurricane Hattie.

This was absolutely the most amazing live concert I have ever been to. Jimmy and his band were amazing. He was engaging, energetic, fun, funny, and I got the feeling that he was just so thankful to be there. His message was so positive and it truly touched me. His voice was amazing- clear and strong throughout the night and there was NO LIPSYNCING OF ANY KIND. I was so impressed because he danced, jumped, kicked his legs and sang for the entire night and was still raring to go at the end of the concert! And he played instruments throughout the performance, bongos and guitar- his playing is amazing. The entire crowd went so wild at the end! Jimmy Cliff is a true artist, if you see him you will gain a life changing experience, no matter what your age, race, color or creed is.

I don't know how old Jimmy is, but nothing has been lost. He delivered one incredible performance. Not one person in the audience was sitting down or totally transported by the music. I am not a reggae fan, but loved it.

A great time was had by all as the biggest living reggae legend took the stage and proceeded to blow it up. I'm not sure that Atlantic City was the best choice based on the sparse crowd (Philadelphia would have had a stronger turn out) but a rockin good time was had by all. Busting out the newer material early made for a classically filled final 45 minutes in the 1 and a 1/2 hour set. Switching "Vietnam's" title to Afghanistan made a great song timeless in it's scope. Approaching 70 Jimmy Cliff has more animation and emotion than artists half his age while his music remains poignant, and on this night, well delivered and received.

He still has it. Its amazing at his age he can bring so much energy to a show.He moves and dances around constantly always with a huge smile on his face. He truly loves what he does and it shows. For less then 30 dollars you can go see a legendary performer. See him if you can you wont regret it. You wont get a lot lights and visuals bet you will get alot of pure music with alot of passion and energy the way music is supposed to be.

JIMMY CLIFF IS THE REGGAE AMBASSADOR.. WAS THE CONSUMMATE ENTERTAINER,,HOB HAD HIM ON A WEDNESDAY NITE AND TOTALLY DISRESPECTED BOTH HIM AND HIS AUDIENCE WITH AN OPENING ACT THAT WAS SO FAR REMOVED FROM REGGAE OR ENTERTAINING ...IT JUST TOOK AWAY SO MUCH FROM WHAT WAS THE BEST CONCERT OF THE YEAR.. This was my eleventh Reggae Night at the Bowl, and its snuck into my all-time Top5!! Don Carlos came out just as the sun was setting and it was a mystical atmosphere that was truly enrapturing.. Don Carlos was the missing link from all the previous Hollywood Bowl Reggae Nights.. When he sang "Harvest Time" my heart went out to the people of Palestine.. Dancing around the entire place like it was a rootz reggae rave my legs are killing me but certainly worth it! Already looking forward to next year :) Also was the best Jimmy Cliff show, when he played the Nyabinghi it moved the Holy Spirit across the night skyline in the Hollywood hills there.. Such mystics to bring Rastafari love to the people of Los Angeles, 20,000 strong singing together in love and harmony of the Spirit. Jah love! My Reggae Night Top Five btw: 1) Burning Spear 2007 (2) I-Threes 2011 (3) Culture 2005 (4) Bunny Wailer 2004 (5) All the Marleys with Bunny and Ras Michael 2006

Fun night at the Bowl. Reggae Night crowd full of life and ready to rock-steady. Shaggy had a great band, but was little more then a cheerleader. Kept telling the audience to get up but did little musically to back up his words. Jimmy Cliff a thrill to hear after all these years. Opening acustic songs were great. Some of the classics were a true treat. (Seemed like he was having monitor problems, as things went off key from time to time.)

This was my first Reggae concert. Jimmy Cliff was the headliner. I never heard Jimmy Cliff's music before the concert and to be frank, I am not sure if I like Jimmy's style of Reggae. I listened to a few of his songs and 30 minutes prior to when the concert was suppose to end, I left early. However, the opening act Don Carlo was great and Shaggy was okay. Shaggy performed a medley of his hits such as Boombastic but Shaggy spent to much time telling the audience to get on their feet and let's party. Just sing. If it wasn't for Don Carlo, the concert would have been a bust.

Jimmy Cliff is epic. The show was great - he has tons of energy. The show was maybe a little over produced - I would like to see a little more gritty and more roots - had a more modern vs old school reggae feel. If you have never seen him before I would I highly recommend.

My 12 year old son, who loves Bob Marley, was excited to see Jimmy Cliff. I saw Marley on his last tour in Oakland, it was the highlight of my life, and I saw Peter Tosh in SF too. But I was not expecting that much from an aging Cliff, just a run-through of his old songs. I couldn't have been more wrong. Jimmy proved to be both ageless and timeless as he hit the ground running and never let up. It wasn't just a retrospective, it was a reggae history lesson. He started with the early sounds AND moves ("ska"), went on to play some of his bigger hits ("rock steady") like I've never heard them, songs from "The Harder They Come" and then a "memorial" song from "Uncle Bob" ("We are just playing around..." he says, to be clear that he's not trying to be Bob or take credit for him, although someone with a bigger ego could have.) Few realize that Jimmy was the original reggae trailblazer, that he actually launched the careers of Desmond Dekker and Bob Marley, but he was very humble about that even when mentioning it in his retrospective/history. He also played his smash hits "Reggae Nights" and "Hakuna Matata" from the Lion King. He was all over the stage the entire show, really put out to keep the crowd engaged, and we left feeling as though we had witnessed a true legend of international proportions, enroute to his European tour. If you like reggae, check out the original King while you still can: Jimmy Cliff.

The band and JImmy were spectacular, the music was touching, and the band was lively. I don't know whose responsibility it is but it is NOT OK to wait an hour and forty minutes for an hour and a half show and charge $50 a ticket to wait. I was glad that the set was a mix of the classics with lesser know songs. I know I'm getting older but rudeness is very difficult to tolerate, specifically people who say "excuse me" as if they are going to pass you then just stand right in front of you. Overall I loved seeing a legend up close and personal, loved the band trying to teach us Jamaican moves [not much space to practice:(] and the drum circle for "By the Rivers of Babylon".

FUN! The mini bird show was a nice distraction from the sun. The 3 man band opener was REALLY good. We took mom (see pic) & even she liked it. It was her first concert and she'd never heard reggea before. I think it put her at ease to see the young families enjoying the great music of Jimmy Cliff and singing along. For those who are first timers to zoo concerts I recommend arriving by 4pm so you can sit under the trees in the highest tear or to the extreme left so you can catch some shade up front and so you don't just see jiggling derrieres the whole concert!

This, by far, was the best concert that I have been to in a long time. I bought tickets for my mother and father, who is a native Jamaican. The last time they saw Jimmy Cliff in concert was 35 years ago and I thought it would be a great treat to take them. From the time he walked on stage to the encore performance was non stop entertainment. It made me think about when I was a little girl listening to his music and dancing with my parents. It's hard to believe that Jimmy Cliff is his age because he moves as if he is a much younger man and his voice....so melodic!! He sounds like he does on the record. The band was phenomenal!! I am happy that I was able to take my parents to see him and to give my dad a little piece of his home wrapped up in almost 2 hours of fun! I didn't want the night to end, especially for my parents! To watch them sing along to every song was priceless! I wish I could personally thank Jimmy Cliffs for setting up such an awesome performance and giving my parents such joy!

Hollywood Bowl presented it s 13th annual Reggae Night this past weekend. Past headliners have included Maxi Priest, Damian Jr. Gong Marley, Ziggy Marley and Sly & Robbie. For me, this was my first real exposure to a full night of this style of music. I was pleasantly surprised that I had a good time. The first name you think of when you think reggae music is Bob Marley. He was such a huge artist, his influences are still felt today. Surprisingly, none of the artists covered him that night. I was expecting to hear a cover song or two, but it didn t happen. Currently the Canadian group MAGIC! has had a #1 reggae-inspired hit with the song Rude. So reggae music is still vital in today s marketplace. First up for the evening was Don Carlos and the Dub Vision Band. Don Carlos first got his start in a group called Black Uhuru. His 7-member band included a 3-piece horn section. With his dreadlocks and full beard, he looked like a typical reggae singer. His songs were decent if a bit non-descript. The stage rotated and it was time for the next act, Shaggy. He was the one I was the most familiar with for the night. He had a string of hits during the late 90 s and early 2000 s. Dressed in shorts, tank top, and jacket with a Brooklyn ball cap. He got the crowd on their feet, where people stayed for his 45 minute set. His band included a DJ who played snippets of songs including Blurred Lines, Empire State of Mind and California Love in an effort to get the crowd pumped. He still played off his sexiness at 45. He made a point of showing his chest, and he stuck his microphone in his shorts with the tip out like it was a penis. And showed off his dancing and grinding skills too. The songs held up pretty good, and the crowd was really into his performance. He sang a sexy duet with his back-up singer Melissa from an album that was produced by Sly & Robbie. Highlights included Angel and It Wasn t Me. During the break, Anne Litt (local DJ from KCRW) came out and thanked the artists that performed as well as the radio station for sponsoring the concert. The finally act of the night was reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. He has been honored with the Jamaican Order of Merit for his achievements in arts and sciences. His first song was performed by his band unplugged, with his band members contributing backing vocals and drum beats. The full band was used for the rest of the night. He proved to be a very spry 66 year old. He was dancing and moving around the stage for his whole set. He said how this was not work for him, it was all fun. Some of the songs had a bit of a political bent included his own Vietnam (which was repurposed as Afghanistan ) as well as Rebel Rebel. He commented on how we needed more love in the world, and an end to all wars and violence. He also mentioned his career as an actor as well as writing songs for movies. Highlights for the night included Wide World, You Can Get it if You Really Want and I Can See Clearly Now. The crowd was very racially diverse, and was there to have a good time. It was fun to watch the people walking to their seats and dancing along to the reggae rhythms as they moved along the walkway. In my opinion, Shaggy was able to move the crowd more, so I wouldn t be surprised if he was the headliner next year. But his song catalog is not as diverse or well-rounded as someone like Jimmy Cliff. Both are good entertainers. I also noticed that the crowd thinned some as the night went on\u2026 but that might have to do with it being Sunday night. Thanks to all for a fun evening at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl.

It was a perfect day at the Hollywood Bowl in mid-July to go watch reggae from legendary performers Don Carlos, Shaggy and Jimmy Cliff. Don Carlos brought the traditional reggae set in with grace, style and energy with his full band with live horns. He is a master and his voice and showmanship were top notch and performed hits spanning his more than 40 year legacy. Then came Shaggy -- a man who is no stranger to the stage. He teased, flirted and brought the crowd to their feet in his slightly over 45 minute set. Bringing hit after hit, Mr. Boombastic showed us what a combination of what a man from Brooklyn and Jamaica can to bring to the reggae world. For the grand finale, Jimmy Cliff brought us home first with a few acoustic songs with the conga drums to his full band. A legend, he has been singing our songs for more than 50 years. From a rocking Harder They Come to a soulful Many Rivers to Cross, Jimmy Cliff is a true master.

Jimmy Cliff is not only one of the seminal figures of the genre, but a consummate entertainer with no trace of let-down in his 70+ plus years. Unlike some aging rock stars, his high notes sparkled like a bell, finding no need to sing in a lower key or take musical shortcuts. He pranced and danced around the stage, cajoled and flirted with the audience like a man a third his age. He not only played 2 great tracks from his recent album(Rebel Rebel and Upside Down), he played the old favorites too. I particularly enjoyed the journey through some of the Reggae's early influences...ska and rocksteady. His reggae-tinged Cupid was an homage to one of his influencers- Sam Cook. The crowd, which ranged approximately from age 8 to 78, soaked it all in like a pina colada during a Jamaican sunset.

Jimmy Cliff gave a fantastic performance at The Fillmore...it was a Reggae Night to remember! He started off with the soulful "Rivers of Babylon" and then launched in to an unbelievable set. He sang most of his classics, including "I Can See Clearly", "The Harder They Come", an updated "Vietnam" (Yesterday I got an email, from my friend, fighting in Afghanistan...), and too many more to mention. He debuted a beautiful new song called "Welcome Home" on one of his four encores. Jimmy is on fire, spreading love and positive vibes! He loves the audience and you can feel it. 100% IRIE!

Don Carlos and Dub Vision Band were great! Too bad they came on first while people were getting to their seats, eating dinner, etc. It was disrespectful to these great performers. Signs all over the place said that once the performance started, people would be admitted at appropriate times. This rule was obviously not followed. Shaggy was OK when he sang. However, most of the time he yelled at the crowd, made obscene gestures, and was otherwise a bore. He should have been the lead act or left out altogether. Jimmy Cliff was great!

Jimmy Cliff delivered! His voice is still great! And his band performed immaculately! He performed his most memorable hits and rocked them harder than ever. His rendition of WILD WORLD was the best I've ever heard!

Wicked show! Future reggae events at Hollywood Bowl should have authentic Jamaican foods and dishes for sale. If you don't know, it is the Jamaican food (jerk chicken, curry goat, rice and beans, plantain, etc.) that really entices the people, as the good lines would be constantly full of people, even during the entire concert! More revenue also for the Bowl.

What a totally great entertainer Jimmy Cliff is! His band and backup was even great, and totally into their performance as well. Jimmy is clearly passionate about his music and putting on a good show for his loyal audience. Wish it never ended and will definitely be catching up with Jimmy next time he is in town. Thanks for the awesome show!!

This was an inspirational performance that had me dancing in the ailes. I was dissappointed that it was not sold out and that the crowd that was there sat through the majority of the show. I was very lucky to have this chance to see not only a reggae legend, but a rare artist of the highest caliber. If he is in the area again, this is a must see show and you don't have to love reggae, you just have to love music.

I saw Jimmy Cliff many years ago and was amazed by his boundless energy and incredible range. I just want to say that he hasn't lost it. He played a great number of his hits as well as some new tunes from his most recent release. The guitar, drums, and espcecially the back-up vocals were wonderful and clean. Most of all, Jimmy made me feel great throughout the show and I can't believe that he can still perform at such a high level after all of these years! I love you Jimmy Cliff!!

Excellent concert -- loved every minute! Jimmy's voice was as good as back in the 70s. His positive energy was infectious. It was a magical reggae evening. Also we throughly enjoyed the Uptown Napa Theatre.

So not only is Jimmy Cliff an amazing and beautiful, uplifting man and performer....but the venue was great as well! It's one of those old restored theaters with artistic touches and beautiful decorations. Small, easy access and view from/to any seat....friendly unpretentious people. This is the second time I've been here, George Thorogood was the other time and it was great also!! But naturally....Jimmy was beautiful! I hadn't seen him in 25 or so years...so it was nice to finally see him perform again...so inspiring. My only complain is the show could have been one or two songs longer but thankfully my attention span doesn't demand this ;p Otherwise great!

This was totally the wrong venue for Jimmy Cliff. The only seating was upstairs, at the back where the stage was not visible. Their website stated that the doors would open @ 8:30 and the show would start at 9:00... Apparently the opening act was a no-show, so the doors did not open till after 9:00, and Jimmy Cliff did not start playing till almost 11:00. The sound started out muffled, and it took a few minutes for it to clear up. Once Jimmy was onstage, it was a great show, with the standing-only crowd on the dance floor swaying and bouncing to the reggae like it was Sunsplash in Jamaica. Unfortunately for those of us that came on public transit, the night ended way too soon, as we had to rush out to catch the last train south around midnight. Poor planning on my part I guess. What's with the Friday night schedule BART?

Cliff and band were great. The problem was waiting for 2 hours for the show to start by which time 1/2 of our party had given up. That really sucked out the energy and excitement, marring what could have been a great evening. Apparently there was a warm up act (or not) who dis not show (or just played some records for hours before any Cliff and band hit the stage?). Staff were as clueless as we were about what was happening. One staff member claimed "Doors open at 9 but no showtime was specified" Then I showed her their own website posting "Doors open at 8:30. Show at 9:00"

A Jimmy Cliff concert is a spiritual experience. Having been to nearly a dozen of his concerts since the 1980s, I know he is one of the best performers in the history of entertainment. His music and energy just makes everybody feel good, happy, and powerful. It's hard to imagine that he's sixty two year young. What makes his concerts still great and relevant is that he plays what you want to hear. While he may throw 1-2 newer songs in his set, he knows people are there to hear legendary songs - Vietnam (renamed Afghanistan), Many rivers, Bongo Man, Wild World, Wonderful World BP, Harder the Come, etc. The only song I wish he would hit was Shelter of Your Love, but he hasn't done that in years. Maybe since the movie Cocktail made it famous. Take somebody who doesn't know or like reggae music. Give them a beer and let Jimmy take them for a magical ride. He is AS good as he ever has been. And no, he doesn't go in mid song to hit his backstage bong any longer, so the kids can go too :)

Great show on a hot night in Minneapolis! After the first few greatest hits, it was obvious we were witnessing the James Brown of reggae. Jimmy's list of hits is historic and he seemed to get to nearly every one of them. The show was very tight, the nine-piece backup band played very well and I'd go again any time!! Jimmy danced and sang like he was 30. Keep the groove, Jimmy!!

We did not sit down, his energy was contagious & even with ungodly hot weather we all danced, sang and had downright joyful fun. His band members while half his age truly adored Jimmy and joined him in matching his energy.

When security said "your in row B and people are going to be dancing here so you will have obstructed view," we were slightly bummed. When Jimmy Cliff came out the entire venue stood up everyone was dancing and singing and NOBODY sat down the entire concert! That is a testiment to the amazing power of Jimmy Cliff!!! AWESOME
