The Manhattan Transfer

The Manhattan Transfer

THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER IN CONCERT:Big Apple jazz fusionists and a cappella masters The Manhattan Transfer have been putting their one-of-a-kind spin on vocal music since the late '70s, and they continue to wow in concert with swinging sets full of playful covers and funky originals. After the passing of singer and founding member Tim Hauser in 2014, booming bass/baritone Trist Curless of LA-based a cappella group m-pact stepped in to fill his shoes – and he's a perfect fit. In concert the band is an electrifying embodiment of their upbeat downtown sound, bopping around while they deliver their pitch-perfect vocals and encouraging fans to clap along to the jazzy rhythms of their ace drummer. The group's signature guy-girl vocal interplay sounds fresher than ever, and ticket buyers lucky enough to see them work their magic will be humming favorites like "The Boy from New York City" and "Route 66" all the way home.

A special evening with a venerable quartet which decided to carry on after the death of their founder, Tim Hauser, with Trist Curless stepping into his baritone shoes. Janis Siegel, who is now 65, has never sounded better on songs like "Mystery" and "Boy from NYC," and Alan Paul, a founding member and veteran of the 1971 Broadway version of Grease, has his same smooth tenor. Cheryl Bentyne, with TMT since 1979, has had health issues but bounced all over the stage like a whirling dervish, hitting notes only dogs can hear. Trist isn't Tim, and doesn't try to be -- he has a great voice, but a humble demeanor. They sang four songs from their new CD, which is excellent, and a good assortment of old favorites. And, as a bonus, they came out after the show to sign autographs, chat with fans, and pose for pictures. Alan in particular was very accessible and forthcoming about the group's loss of their leader and how they dealt with it. I can't say they are at the top of their game, but they're pretty darn close for a group that's been at it for 45 years.

We have been long-time fans. Manhattan Transfer was our kids first concert (they are now in their 30s). We used their music in our 25th anniversary vow renewal 13 years ago. We were really looking forward to seeing them and they did not disappoint; they are just as good as they always were!

The concert had been preceded by word from friends that this group was far past their prime, even throwing temper tantrums or showing negative attitudes at previous events... All I can tell you is that last night, the Manhattan Transfer had the sellout crowd in their hands and they worked the room to the full extent. We laughed and clapped and were amazed with their vocal pyrotechnics. They performed an obligatory set of their hits which were duly appreciated, and promoted their newest album which is a joint venture with Chick Corea - neat stuff. They really should update their picture - anybody claiming a touring career since the '70s is necessarily going to look different from the picture above! They demonstrated their professionalism and marvelous talent over and over - they should glory in their vintaqe, not hide from it.

The venue was small and the sounds were great. I've been a fan for a long time and have seen them many times. They still sound great and look like they're having fun. I would reccomend to any fan. Only 400 of us saw them but the way they performed you would have though thousands in attendance. Finding the actual theater was a little tough due to no clear signs leading us there. Other than that great evening. Played most all the classics except Ray's Rock House which I would have love to have heard

I have been a fan of the Manhattan Transfer for 30 years and last night's performance did not disappoint. Their fabulous harmony, scat, and featured individual numbers were amazing. They are one of the few groups that can can pull off jazz, the blues, soul, rock, or love songs and have it all sound wonderful. It was a great performance and they are still number one in my book!

I've been a fan for years, but I never saw them live. This has got to be one of the best concerts I've ever seen - they did songs that I knew and didn't know, but it didn't matter as I enjoyed them all equally. I would definitely go to see them again - unfortunately, they aren't in the Boston area that often, so I'll have to wait patiently until they come back. They are absolutely amazing!!!!!

My husband and I went to see The Manhattan Transfer Christmas show and both agree they were fabulous! We have seen them in concert at least 5 times, this being the second Christmas show and they NEVER disappoint! I was disappointed at the number of audience members and hope that it was because there was a major snow storm and not due to a lack of interest. We want them to continue to do concerts in Milwaukee. Loved all the songs (they did not perform Christmas music exclusively) a very nice mix of holiday, old MT classics and at least one song we had never heard them sing before. I enjoyed the fact that they used local musicians for their "orchestra". A very nice touch

Unfortunately, we had a severe winter snowstorm here and we were unable to drive up to Milwaukee for this event. We are heartbroken about it because we have been waiting to see the Manhattan Transfer for years and years. We just love them! Now we will probably never get another opportunity like this was. But, we are totally snowed in here in Northern Illinois and I'm sure Milwaukee is too. Would love to hear how others enjoyed the event! I'm rating them with 5 stars because I'm sure that it was great!!

Whether you're going to see this show because you're a Manhattan Transfer fan or a Take 6 fan, you won't be disappointed. But the real treat is that they come together for many songs (not sure if that would make them Take 10), and the display of musical mastery and harmonies is astounding. It's hard to believe that this marks Manhattan Transfer's 45th anniversary. Although the loss of Tim Hauser was very sad, the new addition to the foursome brings a new dimension and great chops. Take 6 are still wonderful showmen, and fill the stage with vocal acrobatics. Long before there was "Straight No Chaser", there was Take 6. A "band" of voices, energy and talent. Go - you'll love it!

My wife and I greatly enjoyed the recent performance at the Valley Performing Arts Center billed as The Summit. I was originally drawn to the program by my long appreciation of Manhatten Transfer. But I have to say that I came away as a new die-hard fan of Take 6. I was less familiar with their music before, but now can't wait to see them again. As good as they are on record, they are especially impressive live. And, the opportunity to hear these 10 great singers harmonizing together truely was an amazing, unique thing.

Wildly enthusiastic crowd at VPAC. Lots of studio singers & musicians came out to see these incredible singers harmonize. Great acoustics at this venue. I loved the collaboration of Take 6 and Manhattan Transfer. They mixed it up, sang separate & together. Complemented each other perfectly without stepping on each others toes. Trist Curless, the new member of MT, fits in perfectly. Cheryl Bentyne was entertaining to watch. Have always loved Alan Paul's voice. The group still "has it" after all these years. They opened with Killer Joe and closed with a great version of Birdland. Take 6 made all the difference. Had us all singing and on our feet. Their rendition of OVERJOYED was so beautiful I was practically in tears. I have several MT CD's but nothing by T6. Line after the show was too long but I was inspired to download Spread Love along with several others after the show. If you like jazz & vocals you will love these acapella groups.

This was horrible. We had been to MT in Greensboro several years ago and loved listening to their music. We thought this would be a repeat. IT WAS NOT! When they left the stage 'for the last time' there was a mass exodus as the aisles filled with everyone making for the doors as the keyboard person tried to get applause going so that they could come back for an encore few wanted to hear.

Manhattan Transfer AND Take 6 at the Shriners Theater in Collingswood, NJ on Sunday, Oct. 16th was an evening of bombastic vocal entertainment. Sometimes both groups were onstage while other sessions saw them perform alone, but it made no difference. Since I had seen Manhattan Transfer twice before in 1980 and in 1999, I attended this concert more out of curiosity as it was going to be the first time without founding member Tim Hauser who on the night of this concert had passed away exactly 2 years ago. Now in their 60's, I also wanted to see if they still "had it". THEY DO!! Although the set lasted only 90 minutes, it was 90 minutes of pure harmony and great entertainment. Having had a crush on Cheryl Bentyne since 1980, I also wanted to see how she had recovered from her 2 bouts with cancer. SHE HAS!! She was just as energetic as ever, and her voice is just as beautiful as it was 30 years ago. She still has that AMAZING range. Both Janis Siegel and Alan Paul looked and sounded as fantastic as ever. Also, I had never heard of Take 6 before and if the were good enough to tour with Manhattan Transfer, then they must be something special. THEY WERE!! Overall the show was a little bit better than I had expected.

The Summit: Take 6 & The Manhattan Transfer was an unforgettable night of amazing acapella magic! You have the best two acapella groups in the world serenading it's captive audience with their respective hits and combining as one Supergroup of 10 Stars to make new magical versions of their original hits. Take 6's most memorable moments were their live renditions of "Spread Love" and "Happy." The Manhattan Transfer worked their magic with their live rendition of "Killer Joe." The Supergroup of the Summit brought down the house with their live rendition of "Stand By Me" and "Birdland" which led to a great encore. Oh what a night!!! This is the second time we've seen them perform and both times were at Jazz Alley. They've been one of my favorite groups since 1980. We were fortunate to sit right in front of the stage where we could see each of them clearly articulate their unique sounds and rhythms. There is never a dull moment, as each member is constantly entertaining and demonstrating their talents. I have been an MT fan for 40 years and did not know what to expect at this show. I wondered if they "still had it" after 45 years and without Tim Hauser. Well, they greatly exceeded all my expectations. Their performance was spectacular. They still have that great harmony and the individual performances sound as good as they did over 40 years ago. While I still may miss Tim Hauser's voice, his replacement was just as good. He really impressed me. Bottom line is the MT is still a must see group. We are on the larger size and it felt like we were packed in like sardines. Again, the show was amazing and we had a great time but the seating situation was a bummer.

Manhattan Transfer, 45 years later, still sound as good as ever. We were thrilled they performed a lot of their oldies and loved a new sound from their upcoming album. Only wish they had performed something from their Brazil album but no matter, we thoroughly enjoyed the show!

Unforgettable convergence of two legendary groups with 20 Grammy's worth of combined talent, makes this an unforgettable evening. It was an a-capella explosion of nostalgia, classics, modern, pop, jazz, and gospel. The concert was non-stop entertainment from the second they stepped on stage until the end of the encores, with a few surprises thrown in along the way!

Somehow the legacies of Grammy-winning (10 each) Manhattan Transfer and Take 6 have escaped our attention over the years. Seeing they were both in town together on Valentine's Day night at our old Alma Mater, the University of Arizona, we happily clapped, clicked, and listened carefully to the 1-1/2 program that included equal quantities of each group's bests, along with joint performances of tunes made popular by the other group. The voices were the leading instruments, backed by excellent piano, percussion, and acoustic string work. It was love, love, love at Centennial Hall in Tucson Valentine's night.

We had a great time and both groups performed well. The sound system was muddy at times but the musicians didn't flinch once. It's great to see performers still at it after 45 years!

Ballence between MT, Take 6 and the band was very very good. None of them were overpowering. I enjoyed it very much

Words can't express how much fun we had at this show. The talent is just out of this world. I was sad that Manhattan Transfer didn't sing Boy from NY City or My Cat Fell in The Well but everything they did sing was excellent and the way they performed with Take 6 was truly beautiful. 10 times the talent on one stage!!!

I love the way Take 6 and Manhattan Transfer took turns with their songs, and playfully sang together with incredible skill, experience, and joy. Manhattan Transfer's sound has not aged one bit. The vocal ranges of these musicians are huge and the blending of tight harmonies was incredible. Black and white, young and old, new music and old standbys in a very nice venue....a perfect evening.

We drove from Springfield MA. According to GPS, it was only a 2 hour drive, but the traffic got us there 45 min late. In spite of it, we still caught quite a bit of the performances. The fact that they can make their voices sound like they're supported by a whole band, is so impressive. The crowd was hyped, the music was just at the right volume considering the fact that we were right at the foot of the stage. It was an awesome experience. I hope to go back in the day time and during the summer to catch the sites.

I have been trying to check things off my bucket list and as God is my witness these two groups were at the top of the list. The greatest jazz quartet of all time meets the premiere acappella group on the planet OMG I was in heaven. The melding of the voices and styles was breathtaking and the genuine love and respect they showed for each other made it even more fun...To say I loved it would be like saying the Grand Canyon is a pretty big hole. In fact my wife and I traveled 2 hours to see this show and are going to travel to see the show again....I would loudly recommend it to the whole world!

When The Manhattan Transfer Meets Take 6, you will want to be there. This was double the talent, double the fun. It was an energetic, fast paced evening that did not disappoint. Both groups have wonderful voices that have maintained their edge even after the 30- 40 years some of them have been performing. I would highly recommend the show, and gladly go to see them again.

As always TMT knocks it out of the park with their performances. They did it again with a different spin. They featured Trist Curless, Tim's replacement on a lot of songs. He is a great singer. He did not disappoint us at all. He didn't try to duplicate Tim's sound, but brings his own style to the songs he was featured on. There were new arrangements to certain songs that delighted the audience. He's a nice fit in TMT. Next time they're here, I beg everyone to attend their show, you will not be disappointed!!

Birchmere is a great venue - have seen some terrific musicians / groups, but this wasn't one of them and we are fans of Manhattan Transfer. They were simply o.k. (fair) and would not go see them again. The thing is - we love to hear "them" sing - what we got were too many solo(s) of both singers and the piano and bass fiddle.

the harmony was spot on. They owned the stage, and they sang like they really enjoyed it and truly liked each other. The sound could have been better but still good

I love Manhattan Transfer but their performance was sub par in relation to past concerts of theirs that I have attended.I felt that they did too much scat. They have immense talents but making gibberish noises is not one.
