Terrific! Played long set; Pat spoke briefly in the middle - Gwilym Simcock is amazing/-- the Stravinsky like piano and guitar stuff was way over my head!

I have seen Pat Metheny many times over the past 20 + years in different venues and countries. This concert in this musician collaboration are highly recommended, if you are fan of Pat Metheny's older and smoother tunes. He played an expected 2 1/2 hours long concert and it was Pat as Quartet at it's finest. Pure music, no show, just phenomenal great sound and music. My 11 year old son had any problem to sit through the entire concert without sign of getting bored and enjoyed the tunes.

What a treat! Pat Metheny sharing his toys with other kids. Good stuff. The Orchestrion Concert was truely a wonderful experience. I know Pat will continue to interact with "real" players, but it was marvelous to watch and listen to him interacting with The Orchestrion. Pat opened with a few captivating solo guitar pieces before introducing The Orchestrion. He played a unique Baritone Guitar that had bass strings that resonated some bass frequencies that in and of themselves evoked audience reaction. Pat played like the true harmonic and rhythmic craftsmen that he is. His performance on the "harp" guitar was also very special. Wow, what incredible technique, delivered with such great temperment and grace. You must experience Pat and Orchestrion "in person". It's like watching a big music "machine" that seems at times that it could "takeoff" into the air right off the stage. Pat's comittment to the music and the technical feat are of the highest level. He performs as if he were interacting with "The Group". 150% comittment each and every night. What a pro. We should all thank his wife and family for letting him play this game. Thanks again Pat, for sharing Orchestrion. God Bless you, your family, and ALL of your crazed TECHS!

I have seen Pat several times over the last 25 years and this was his best performance ever. Although I enjoy the rest of his band-mates (Lyle Mays is terrific), this show really focused on Pat's playing and it was exceptional. Technically, the Orchestrion is an amazing system from an engineering standpoint, but it never overshadowed the human element and complemented his playing throughout the evening.

Pat Metheney is a brilliant... talented musician. The mechanized "orchestra" he has created is a work of genius. However, a good bit of the music performed was hard to listen to and enjoy because his improvisational style is somewhat disjointed and reckless. I realize that this can be the nature of improvisational jazz and may apeal to others very much, but I was looking for a little more melodic structure. All the pieces were quite long, so when it was bad, it nearly drove us to leave. We stuck around hopning that the best was yet to come... never really happened. I was fascinated with and appreciate the the creativity and technical savvy of this performer, but most of the time it just wasn't my style. I have a couple CDs by Metheny and there was some resemblance at times but not often. We were expecting "music" but felt that there was just disjointed collection noise about 80% of the show. Sorry, I hoped for better.

I have been a fan of Pat Metheny for a long time. This latest project is typical Pat. He never seems to get old or stuck in a rut. I had learned about this concert a week before it was to happen and was excited to hear he would be in the Gainesville, FL area. I checked out his website to see what the tour was about and was amazed at what I saw and heard. Pat first came out and did a few solo guitar numbers and then he brought to life the Orchestrion! As the curtain went up, towering above the stage was a mammoth collection of percussion and musical instruments all connected with wires and lights playing at Pat's command. The 2 1/2 hour program went by too quickly as you sat there and watched and listened to this genius make this monstrosity of instruments play with surgical precision. He went on to explain how it worked and what the background was behind the project. Everyone left there in awe of this musical genius. I was at first a little leery about what I'd hear when I first got there, but after being there and hearing and seeing this performance I was glad I went. I would highly recommend that anyone that is a Pat Metheny fan go see this show and if you are a techno geek you'll love just seeing this thing work.

This man is truly gifted. I guess when you get to his level, you can do whatever kind of tour you want! What started as a curiosity with player pianos, evolved into an artificial intelligence experiment with 50 assorted instruments. If that doesn't impress you, then listen to him actually play the guitar(s). Every time I listen to the Orchestrion CD, I'm reminded of his invicibility...

The programed music started off good but it got old and emotionless real fast. Pat's playing could of been more enhance with a live band and the playing of a few of his jazz hits.

No one with any appreciation of Pat Metheny, musical innovation and a love of jazz or even "new wave" genres should miss this one. It is spectacular and thought provoking. The music, in the end, lacks the spontaneity and the give and take that provides what many of us jazz fans value in ensemble music. As a solo performance, it is amazing. I believe that his facility with improvisation with these incredible "toys" will improve. He is "PAT," after all. I only dosed off, once.

What a genius! He's not just a great musician, guitarist and composer! Pat Methany is a Musicologist! To be able to understand every nuance of every instrument and to be able to literally speak, let alone finesse, each instrument in the orchestrate to respond to his touch from the guitar\u2026. AMAZING! I have seen Pat three time live, this time I was treated to his concert as a birthday gift and it must have been the best birthday gift ever. Will never forget this concert! Still don t quite understand how he does it but like Pat said neither does he completely. It doesn t matter- best concert ever.

Pat if the best guitar player in my opinion His talent goes beyond his natural performence skills into exploring new unknown sounds that he pioneered over his carrer. With Orchestrion he took it to new levels transcending the lomitations of a guitar and projecting it into a full orchestra arena. Out of this world!

Get ready to be surprised. The Orchestrion, a mechanically-controlled ensemble created by Pat Metheny, was superb. I took my three children, ages 9-14, and they loved it because it allowed them to "see" his music's complexity and the relationship of the instruments to one another. I only wished that he had introduced "the band" at the end (we were unclear as to what some of the instruments were) and had allowed a few questions.

I've been a big fan of Pat's for over 30 years and have seen many of his shows, but frankly wasn't sure about this seeing this tour; based on a positive review in the WSJ this past week I figured we (my wife and I ) would give it a shot. The opening acoustic numbers were great, but the Orchestrion portion was a bit dense for us- complex and while Pat doesn't always follow traditional song structures, this suite was pretty "out there" (maybe it's my age!). I think the complexity of the music detracted somewhat from the novelty of the Orchestrion set-up, which was undeniably cool, and Pat's playing was awesome as usual. Although Pat tried to explain how it worked, I'm still not clear on how much he was controlling it real-time vs. it being pre-programmed (ala a Player Piano roll to which he was comparing it). The 2 closing tunes were great though- Antonia from Secret Story (I think!), and a completely improvised tune with parts that Pat would input into the Orchestrion as he went that would then repeat in layers was fantastic. Anyway, we did stick it out till the end (a few in the crowd left mid-way, though most stayed), and Pat was genuinely appreciative of the crowd's support (several standing ovations and again at the end). We loved Pat's Trio tour last time with Christian and Antonio, and will definitely go see him again especially if the PMG tour that's rumored comes to pass. So overall we enjoyed it, but be advised the show will definitely stretch you and I would therefore say is primarily for hard-core fans.

Really impressive show as always, although this time it's just Pat himself. While it would have been great to see some other musicians, the concert and arrangements were great and good eye candy as well. (More lights blinking than you will ever see at a solo guitar concert!) Good, varied program too. I think he did the whole new cd plus a couple of solo acoustic pieces, one song from Bright Size Life (Unity Village, I think) one from We Live Here.

I hadn't heard a single note from Metheny's new band but I didn't doubt it would be all that Pat and crew could be. And I wasn't surprised his band held my close attention for 2 and a half non-stop hours. Granted, I recognized all but three of his songs it was the sheer joy of their playing that made my night so wonderful. After following him for over forty years I wasn't the least bit surprised he pulled that off - pretty good for a non-spring chicken, huh? Good grief, he reached back to Watercolors (1977) and knocked our socks off. A side note: the two young players, Simcock and Oh, were reserved while Metheny and Sanchez went at it like a couple of joyful heavyweights. That reminded me of the first time I saw a very reserved Pat Metheny in the mid-70s with Gary Burton's band. Metheny hadn't recorded any of his own albums yet and was still getting his on-stage sealegs under him. I look forward to hearing more from Simcock and Oh. If you're interested in jazz and want a great place to start (and stay) Metheny's my top recommendation. Wonderful as always, Pat!

I've been a fan of his since high school and have seen him a few times over the years. Metheny doesn't have a funky bone in his body but he's still an amazing artist to watch and hear. The band is all acoustic but Pat does whip out his guitar synth for a few memorable tunes. Only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there were a few more upbeat songs that I wanted to hear (Jaco, Tell It All, Half Life of Absolution), but the show is well-balanced between old PM Group tunes and his later work. He's got one helluva drummer. Glad I caught this show. I recommend it highly.

I expected a warmup band/opening act and an hour from Metheny but he was onstage playing every song for 2 and a half hours! High quality, diverse, amazing music for the duration. I had always wanted to see him live and wondered how he would produce the sounds that are on the CD's but he did it with four different guitars. He didn't sing but his drummer, bassist and keyboard guy along with Metheny's guitar matgic made for an exciting experience.

We see Pat every time he comes to Atlanta...for the last 20 years. This man is a phenom. He puts every single ounce of energy, expression and sheer joy of performance into every show. Every show is different; you leave understanding his creative genius of each new configuration. Pat also exudes respect for his co-talents. He shows his own skills but makes sure each of the artists he shares the stage with gets many opportunities in the spotlight. Antonio Sanchez is THE best percussionist we've ever witnessed. This was our first time experiencing Linda Oh and we were beyond blown away. That woman can WAIL on a double bass. Gwilym was simply spectacular on the keyboards. He was also beyond spectacular.

Just saw Pat and friends at the Alys Stephens Concert Hall, UAB, Birmingham, AL. I was actually expecting a jazz quartet like from the Charlie Hayden days, so I was just blown away that this was an anthology of his work from multiple projects over the past 40 years. It just made it so special for me, as one of those people who thinks no one else could love and appreciate the contributions he's made to our lives more than I (ha ha). Everyone was spot on, and Linda Oh was incredible on bass and so very expressive. I can't remember the pianist's name (he's very well known in Europe), but he was stellar and while different from Lyle Mays in styling, just as terrific and engaging. I wish they'd mic him more, though; I was having trouble hearing him from the Right Orchestra. Now I'm looking to see if I could fly somewhere to watch again. I just cannot thank Pat enough for the joy he has brought to my life and the influence he's had on my own keyboardship. Bravo with Love!

Finally, thanks to some dear friends,we got to see Pat Metheny live. I have loved his music since I was 10; listening to the album "Are you going with me?". Even though I have to wake up at 5 am to go to work,I don't regret going! It was an unforgettable experience for any 'real' music fan. There were mostly grown folks but a father in front of us brought his 7 or 8 year old daughter. Linda Oh was awesome on the Bass and Maestro Tony Sanchez was excellente on the drums. The piano man was spectacular too. We loved it and hope to see them again. Thanks Pat

Pat Metheny never disappoints. I have attended performances ranging from the Pat Metheny Group to his current Unity group and his performances have always been superb. Our seats in this venue were sorely disappointing. While one expects a 1st Balcony seat to be less than superb, imagine the worst airline seat you have ever had and you'll get the picture. This is why my rating moved to "4 Stars" instead of the 5 Mr. Metheny deserves.

Apparently I saw a different group of musicians with Pat Methany that evening, unless this photo describes what Antonio, Linda and Gwilym look like without makeup. Describing Pat as a great guitarist is like saying Errol Garner is a great jazz pianist. Pat like Errol are in a class all by themselves. They are iconic figures whose individual genius creates music that can not be replicated or duplicated by anyone else. It is pure emotion expressed through the individualized creativity of their soul. Then teaming Pat, with three incredibly creative musicians Antonio, Linda, and Gwilym, all kindred spirits, and the evening becomes an unmatched musical experience. In other words, I liked it.

Pat Metheny and his Unity Band rolled into the Town Hall in NYC and brought the house down! A mix of material from the new album, some old Metheny material and some standards, the show was top notch from start to finish, a finish that included three encores (including th le usual rousing rendition of Are You Going With Me?) and a curtain call. Can't wait for the new PMG album next year and a tour in 2014!

As Metheny himself said at the show, this was a leap of faith on all our parts. When we bought the tickets, we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into, and the same applies to him. With such an elaborate contraption such as the Orchestrion, everything has to work perfectly, or else the show is sunk. Fortunately, but as expected, Metheny's dedication to excellence came through. Not only was his playing impeccable as always, but his gizmo worked like a charm. Hard to describe if you haven't seen it, but he has an entire band's worth of instruments all wired to be played, automatically, based on commands sent from his wired guitars and pedals and computer. Pretty incredible. Metheny started the show by playing solo acoustic guitar, sans Orchestrion. Then he worked into it, slowly but surely. The first automated moments came from a simple time-keeping percussive instrument, sort of a cool-sounding metronome. Then, after that, the gizmo got busy! Percussion, keyboards, guitars, marimbas & vibes & xylophones, basses, and other sundry doo-hickeys, all combined to provide Metheny a backing of his own making. He played some old favorites, such as Unity Village, as well as the entire new Orchestrion Suite, and as his second encore, he played an absolutely beautiful version of Sueno con Mexico. In addition to his playing, Metheny also engaged the audience by discussing the Orchestrion contraption, and his motivation behind it, and gave glimpses of how it actually worked. Very cool, indeed, And my missus liked it, too (so I scored some points on this one!).

Having seen Pat on his THE WAY UP tour in 2005--& having been a fan since 1978--I knew that a quality concert was in store one way or another. But this particular evening with Pat & his Orchestrion virtually defies description...only those who have the ORCHESTRION CD & know what it entails can fully grasp the significance of what took place Wednesday night. Any trepidation I may have felt about Pat not having The Pat Metheny Group backing him up that night was quickly put to rest when, after 3 absolutely stellar solo selections (2 on acoustic & 1 on his incredible harp guitar), he "cued up" the massive Orchestrion array of instruments, began playing along with it, and it was full speed ahead into the absolute outer reaches of fusion jazz. Thankfully, it appeared that everything worked properly & that there were no equipment malfunctions, & Pat looked like he was having the time of his life from the start to the end of the encore two and a half hours later. I feel it safe to say that everyone was knocked out of their seats by the quality & intensity of the composed pieces, and especially by the improvised selections Pat treated us to. 40 years of going to concerts, and this performance was in a league of its own...it will easily easily land a spot in my Top 10 Of All Time. This tour simply MUST be released on DVD in the near future...not only for the sake of those of us fortunate enough to have seen it all in person, but especially for those who weren't. Thanks, Pat, for an evening I will never forget...it's concerts like these that make me very happy to be living in this time frame.

This concert was a one-man band, with Pat having apparently programmed an entire orchestra of instruments ahead of time and playing live guitar to their accompaniment. This was a really interesting concert from a technical point of view, but the new music in the album is not the most inspiring of Pat's works. However, putting his old tunes into player mode at the end was a gas. The interesting thing is that his orchestrion can play music that a human player could not, since he is able to chord instruments that otherwise could be played only one note at a time.

i was just blown away at the quality of the sound for starters. perfection. and i've been following pat for 30 yrs., and have never seen, or ever expected what i saw at the Disney theater, tuesday night. how can a human be that good, that creative, and that brilliant with the robotics and set up did. and it was basically a one man, hundred instrument performance like i couldn't even have imagined. and i've been to many pink floyd concerts. just the master craftsman. unbelievable

Expected entertaining jazz and got experimentation instead. Very talented musicians but a guitar imitation of Monk, Coultrane and noise. Difficult to identify repeating melodies that were technically difficult but entertaining to only the most die hard Metheny fans.

It was a wonderful night of old Sounds and Music that we love from the great masters of the Acoustics, Drums, Bass, and Piano. Our family has been avid Fans of Pat Metheny and the many musicians who make up his group since the Falcon and the Snowman!! The addition of the female bass (cello) Linda May Han Oh blew our minds. Antonio Sanchez made it sound as if 5 drummers were on the stage and Gwilym Simcock was as refreshing and versatile as Lyle Mays, adding his own personal and sparkling vibrations to the keyboard. Although we wanted so much to hear the live vocals (which were absent) Pat Metheny never once disappointed us. His music still gives us goosebumps, chills and makes us swoon from musical pleasure!!

Simple stage set-up and virtuoso performances on a beautiful evening in northeast Ohio. Pat Metheny and his band delivered a well-paced performance of compositions from his extensive catalog. The 20 time Grammy winner played with fire and delicacy throughout the show. He also happily shared the spotlight with his band mates and seemed to be enjoying himself throughout the 2 hour performances. Bravo!

Pat Metheny has been innovating in jazz since the mid-70s, and now, all these decades later, this continues to be the case. I've been to Pat's live performances three times over the years, and these have been true musical events. He and his bands have always been stunningly virtuosic and expressive. This event at Cain Park was no exception. This was an awesome four-piece band of virtuosos playing at the top of their game for two-and-a-half hours! The compositions varied from the most lilting, beautiful and romantic, through to staggering jazz, jazz-funk, and jazz-fusion, to some lengthy complex chord-melody expositions; and the timbral palette went from acoustic instruments, to electric, to MIDI instruments. Each of the instrumentalists had ample opportunity to take extended solo spots, all of which were brilliant. Pat Metheny has not slowed down in spite of having reached 62 years of age. He still plays with fantastic intensity and endurance. It was a great and memorable performance.

The promo picture is deceiving. That's the Metheny Unity Band. This was Metheny playing Metheny with supporting musicians hand picked by him. And they were just fantastic! He didn't bother calling out the song titles because in almost all cases the audience knew and loved them. When he did speak he admitted these were older beloved tunes chosen expressly to hear this band play them. And play them they did!

Seeing Metheny perform is being witness to a prodigal encounter. The guy is clearly a brilliant guitar player. I've seen him several times over the past 30 years, with some shows being much bigger productions than others. This particular show, "An Evening With...", offered a casual presentation, rather than a well structured thematic show, which has been a hallmark of the past shows I've seen. Not surprisingly his band members were very talented. I wish the piano player was facing the audience (rather than having his back to us), and it would have been nice to hear Metheny speak to the audience a little bit. He has fans (myself included), who would be very interested in what he has to say about his instruments, the selection of tunes comprising the evening, or even his insights about where jazz is heading today. All in all, I would highly recommend everyone seeing him. He's a living legend in the annals of jazz. It would have been nice to allow a moment for pictures or video. As for the Beacon Theater, I recommend you enforce a policy prohibiting people from coming in late; it was very disruptive!!!!!!

Amazing night! Amazing concert! I have follower Pat for a long time and this set up was brilliant! Very well balanced and amazingly talented musicians. I will point out that the mixing took a bit too long to be optimized. I will also point out that there were quite a few disturbing individuals in the room and security has been inefficient in removing those individuals soon enough not to disrupt parts of the songs

I'm a born and raised NY'er and I've been listening to Pat my whole life, and going to see him for 25 years. First off getting into the Beacon took way too long. I got there at 7:35 for an 8pm show and I still walked in late and I had no bag. That's not acceptable. Sat in lower balcony and the sound was really poor, which is very out of character for a Pat show. I love Pat and his band but Pat choses to play the same older tunes as always - there were no surprises in the show for me and that was a let down. Overall this was definitely the worst live Pat experience I've had. I'll love him always, still though.

As a former young musician I know the effort involved in making music, and there's no doubt the talent of each member of Pat's current ensemble. If you are just out for an evening of entertainment, however, after the fourth song it all begins to sound the same.

Pat began the show with his custom made Pikasso 42 string guitar, and stunned the audience with his total ownership of this amazing instrument. He played a variety of guitars including his synthesizer guitar. I fell in love with Pat's music years ago upon first listen and consider him one of the world's greatest. If you get a chance to see him, by all means do it,you won't be disappointed. His band did an awesome job as well especially his drummer, Antonio Sanchez. What can I say, I love Pat Metheny!

This is a new quartet line-up, featuring long-standing Metheny drummer Antonio Sanchez, Gwilym Simcock on piano, and Linda Oh on (mostly) acoustic bass. I had never even heard of Simcock or Oh, but have no worries \u2014 both are terrific musicians who don't just "hold their own," but bring outstanding skills sets to explore and push the material to new places. For this tour, Metheny has opted to revisit many previous compositions with new arrangements, but also notes the set list may vary from city to city. I loved hearing how this quartet approached the material. They played with passion, precision, and near telepathic communication. Pat still exudes that humble, polite, gracious manner I observed at the first concert I saw in 1978. As I'm sitting here typing this the next morning, I'm still in awe of the technical virtuosity Pat displays so effortlessly in the service of the song. All in all, a very satisfying evening spent with my favorite musician.

The concert began with a bunch of well known Metheny's tunes. Not well rehearsed. The band looked not connected with each other. The concert got better after Pat talked with the public (almost one hour after they began playing). Some tunes were well played. The sound was not good. The piano and drum did not sounded well, very week sound. I liked a lot the reverb effect in some parts, very appropriated effect. Pat played awesome on How Insesitive, I think is the only tune when Pat played awesome. The concert was ok

I have been a Pat Metheny fan almost 30 years now. It took some time to get used to having a sax player, but I think it works well. It's a different approach to his music and I don't think it will every be like his tandem with Lyle Mays, but its good stuff.

Setting aside I'm a major fan of Pat Metheny's work, and that we both attended U of Miami at the same time, it is still the only ticket in town I will spend the bigger bucks to see. Why? He and his hand chosen, brilliant, fellow musicians are simply the best there is out there. Combined with Pat's signature jazz fusion/Brazilian/high tech, flair, these guys leave nothing left in the tank. It's ALL out there, on stage for 3 hours of glorious sound, that always seems too short. Pat and Co. take the audience on a journey. Some of the music reaching heights that seem to defy human ability. The emotional ride is truly staggering and I always end up feeling transported and altered. Friday night was no exception. Switching from intense musical duets to new material with fabulously rich sounding themes, to beautiful, touching melodies, I can only say, I'll be back as long as Pat is able to play. I've attended at least 8 Pat Metheny concerts over the years, and they are NEVER the same and ALWAYS extraordinary. My only complaint...why can't he come to LA more often!!!

Pats guitar sounded like some of the loud speakers at the Greek were blown and buzzing, not clean like the last time I saw him there. Overall the band performed at a very high level of artistry and skill. I miss Pat's music with Lyle, and its melodic nature. This group and its music is more hardcore jazz. The sax player Chris Potter is amazing and would be a good addition to the old group style of song writings with Lyle. But I do feel that some of the music writings of Unity sound more like just a hardcore jazz jam session and miss the melodic nature of the old group which is my preference.

Pat Metheny did it again! He is one of the very best jazz guitarist around. He plays with a highly intellectual, sensitive nature which stands him out from all the rest. I was in awe the whole time watching his intensive nature master genius with a gentle soul as he plays with heart - whole heart. I felt the moment was too short, but I could have listen to him all night . Pat has mastered the heart felt texture to his music and his new band Unity Group performers were also outstanding - horn, drums, standup bass, and keyboards... along with all the electronic ingenuity was absolutely superb. I have watched him perform from California to unbelievable Columbus, Ohio and each performance has been worth the enriched food for thought it gives endlessly. Thank you Pat Metheny Unity Group.

I have seen Pat Metheny Group 25 years ago and at that time I knew I'd never see/hear a better concert. Well, I was wrong. Pat is even better now!!! Chris Potter is amazing and Antonio Sanchez accentuates his virtuososity with energy and momentum. Pat brought his "invisible backup players" with him, these complex machines (pipe organs made of glass bottles, automated vibes and percussion) which are on timers to enhance the experience. He told us "once these machines get going you'll see how crazy I really am". HA! He is nuts!!! They played for 3 full hours, no breaks. Wow
