A great start to a happy and joyous season. Perfect to put you in the spirit of peace, love, and harmony. Nnenna's voice is a great one, not to miss accompanied by John Brown and the Big Band sound. Great classics will put the jingle bells in your step.

I was so happy that the combined talents of John Brown and Nnenna Freelon came to The Carolina Theater on Sunday, December 7th. The evening was super!

What a night! First, we were treated to the amazing rhythm, energy, and intriguing social commentary of The Beast, with Pierce Freelon. I can't compliment them enough - so engaging and evocative. No way anyone could sit still. Then the beautiful Ms. Freelon entirely OWNED the stage and our hearts with her alternately lilting, crooning, playful, powerful voice. Her delivery of some beautiful torch standards was exquisite and all her own. And her band! Each member added their own delicious ingredients to this jazzy, bluesy stew pot. You can tell they've been playing together a long time, because the whole was definitely more than the sum of the parts. Loved loved loved Beverly Botsford's percussion! Thank you to all of the artists for a wonderful, thrilling and deeply satisfying evening!

Nnenna Freelon is the consumate performer. Her voice is incredible, her band is incredible and her stage presence is enticing. Nnenna is able to make the audience feel like they are "part of the family" and performing for us is like "coming home". The opening act included a number of outstanding musicians, but it did not come close to capturing the audience as Nnenna and her group. Hopefully, her son (lead singer for the opening act) will absorb more of Nnenna's magic as he develops his career.
