Just got home from the Melody Gardot concert in Chicago. All I can say is that it was hands down the most beautiful and artistic musical performance I have ever seen. I have seen/heard better singers, but watching her was like watching art being made. awesome!

Pro: Great voice, excellent sound. Love the music. Guy on the sax and trumpet blew me away. CON: Average age of people attending was 50+ . People were really quiet and sat down most of the time. Concert started at 7 pm. She didnt show till 9:30. Did not play all of my favourite songs.

Melody Gardot did not disappoint. Her show was eclectic. Whether she was singing, playing the piano or telling a story she captured my attention. The scope of her talent was highlighted when she vocalized the sound of a trombone during a stirring version of Caravan.

Hip, cool, unique, jazzy. Melody Gardot is like no other singer on the scene today, a superb writer of songs and teller of tales and a masterful musician. Her light, breezy style made for an intimate evening at LA's famed Troubador, a venue not generally known for booking jazz acts. Excellent backing, with special nod to her sax player. She combines the best in musicianship and writing since maybe Joni Mitchell. A very bright star who will leave her mark as a performer and songwriter.

Unfortunately, whoever was mixing the sound did a terrible job. We were seated in the eighth row on the center aisle. Her vocals were too low and she was undecipherable when she was talking between songs. Her band is hot and, given our seats, the horn section and guitarist were both clear. The bass was muddy and sounded like it was being played in the bottom of a 55 gallon oil drum. We have seen Medody many times and this was the highest energy we have experienced from her. Too bad it was lost due to a horrible mix.

This was the second time I've seen her and it was different but just as wonderful. The band blew me away especially her saxophone player who played two at a time. Amazing. Melody was great and very funny. The only problem I had was that her mike was very low and I had trouble hearing her sometimes.

We were expecting a whole concert but it was a very short performance. The musicians were absolutely wonderful. I will think twice before I go to a concert at Birchmere. Instead of spending my $ on not so good food I'd pay more for a concert at Strathmore which would last much longer.

This concert was amazing! I have been following Melody Gardot for about 8 years and finally this concert and my schedule were on track and I was able to experience her and the band live. What a treat! I love her voice and her music, this is my first time seeing her live and her personality comes through. Melody has great interaction with the audience and in between sets is very witty. Her voice is lingering and evokes a sense of longing for me, I hear it clearly in "Love me like a river does", "Your heart is a Black as night" and "My one and only thrill". Melody Gardot along with her band invite you into a beautiful atmosphere and mood. The concert exceeded my expectations.

Melody is such an accomplished singer/ songwriter. She has the most incredible sultry and multi-faceted voice. Her ensemble saxophonists (3) , drummer, guitarists, pianist are top notch. Melody understands the power of music to get people to dance and sing. She is an inspiration!

She sounded wonderful! She took a detour from her traditional CD sounds and let her bossa nova influence shine through! Don't be afraid to dance! Get off your backside and feel the music! She and the band had an amazing time and you felt connected to all the band members by the end of the show. She was the Diva extraordinaire, but she didn't steal the fire from her band; no ego issues here! The drinks were a bit high ($12 for a SoCo & lime that wasn't very strong or generous) and the usher staff seemed pretty annoyed to have to be working, but the venue was beautiful, perfect for anyone anywhere in the place to hear them conjure up magic! Worth seeing!

A) Pleasantly surprised at how intimate the theatre was and how great our seats were B) We looooooved Melody!! This was our second time seeing her (the first being in Barcelona) and the girl sure knows how to perform. She is such a breath of fresh air with her soft, soothing sounds, and the band was great with their soloing. We loved the new songs she played from her most recent CD, but also the picks from her older ones, too. C) The only downside was that the set seemed short. There was no intermission, and she began around 8:15 and ended (with the encore) just before 10pm. I We understood that she was on a crazy tour, but were left craving more!

A true star, a true musician! Melody appeared on stage in black from head to toe like Marlene Dietrich or Tallulah Bankhead, started the show tout sole/a cappella (except for some shaking of her bracelet and a kind of tom-tom), and was onstage the better part of two hours singing (and playing). The show started small, with smaller sounds and perhaps some audio quality issues, but gradually opened up and by the end the crowd was eating out of her hand. The best word for her is PRETERNATURAL. She is Dionysus; a Pied Piper for the jazz lover.

Melody's presence is so uplifting and positive. The fact that her voice is incredible just adds to the great time everyone had. Great show. Although Town Hall needs to fix their stage lighting. There was a horrible blue light shining directly in our eyes during a good portion of the show. THAT was not good.

SambaOverwhelmed
Melody Gardot and her accompanying musicians have demonstrated how good in their art they are. Unfortunately, what they play (and more unfortunately, compose) is not original music. Rhythms and chords sound like Carlinhos Brown, but not so dance-encouraging. (Indeed they had a hard time to make people raise and dance). I acknowledge I didn't listen to the new album before the concert, and I wasn't aware that it is so different to the previous one (which I loved so much). Therefore, what I experienced during the concert was shock instead of delight.

I adore Melody's recordings and couldn't wait to hear her in person. Her concert was much different than expected. She focused on her current album and, disappointingly, refrain from many of her older marvelous songs. The concert was shorter than expected; I would have rather she focused more on HER performance than allowing her band to display their skills. I traveled from FL to NY to hear Melody, not to hear her band perform abstract jazz. Despite this, hearing and seeing Melody perform in this smaller venue was a treat.

Her voice is equally rich and wonderful live as it is on her records. She and her band played her songs in interesting and terrific new arrangements that I didn't expect; which were just as good as her recorded work. Melody has a beautiful instrument for a voice. She can sing many different styles. Every song was amazing. She is accompanied by a very talented band. These guys were individually so great that they could headline their own show. We had a fun time. We were clapping, snapping our fingers and singing along. She has a great personality and had us in the palm of her hands. She even got everyone up dancing and singing. It was just what was needed after a stressful day at work to get lost in her voice.

She played electric guitar, the piano, and South American percussion instruments. I thought she was vocalist and songwriter only, but was surprised by her versatility and flirtatious sense of humor. I doubted that she could get the audience to rise to its feet to call-and-response sing to the Portuguese and Argentinian-inspired songs and I was right. This was an audience that was watching her and observing in silence her whispery artistry. Who wanted to break the spell? Not i.

I'm a huge fan of the singer . So i'm suspect to say anything . The show was wonderful . Tickets were easy to get . I found the stage at the Town Hall very narrow . The singer /musicians and instruments were squeezed in there . There was a curtain/wall behind them that cut the stage in half . So bad that lighting were compromised . But it's all about the music . The music and her performance saved it all .

Melody Gardot's voice is silky smooth with relatively wide low and middle range. This concert featured songs from her most recent album. An album where she is exploring an expanding range of sounds and cultures. I can understand that as an artist she would want to do this, but so far she's shown that she's best with traditional jazz. This particular concert was continuously sabotaged by very poor lighting. The back lighting of the stage and spotlights out to the audience were blinding, such that one could not see what was happening visually on stage.

I've waiting about 2 years for Melody to come back to the states to see her live. I was so excited when she announced she was playing in NYC AND at a venue like the Town Hall! Her voice is just so unique and powerful, and she has an amazing band to back her up! She talked about how music can take you places - and the various cultrual influences in her music was so obvious & awesome that it did make you feel as if you were being taken away to Brasil, or France, etc. I brought a friend who was not familiar with her stuff, but walked out a huge fan :)

I've been a fan of Melody Gardot's for some time, so I was very excited to see and hear her when she performed in NYC at Town Hall... a lovely venue for her- Her music did not disappoint and her vocal and improvisational artistry were incredibly impressive. However, her music was a bit overshadowed by the fact that the stage was bathed in black, her musicians were bathed in black and she was wrapped, head to toe in black. I understand the need for low lighting for Melody's concerts, but was hoping that she would have worn something that would have taken her out of the shadows and put her further up front where she belongs. In addition, the lame light "show" did not help. That said, this was relatively unimportant in an evening watching and listening to an artist that I believe will soon be perceived as iconic. She is, in a word, extraordinary and a STAR.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived for Melody's show, but when the intricate almost symphonic journey began, I knew these were top of the line musicians with well-honed crafts. Melody's voice, a tonal instrumental addition to the music, expressed pure sound that morphed into words, exercising great range and emotional depth. I have never seen or heard someone play 2 saxophones at once. I didn't think it was possible. I went to see Melody Gardot, hoping to hear her perform her songs the way she recorded them, soft, sultry, haunting. Instead I felt as though I were watching a jazz trio with Melody Gardot accompanying. Worrisome Heart was turned into a song medley, set to a driving tribal drum beat. Love Me Like a River took an uptempo jazz turn, with only a hint of the haunting feel of the recorded version. A times she left the stage entirely, turning the show over to the trio. And frankly, the whole blowing kisses to her "Mr. Everything" sax player was just a little too self-indulgent for me. She has an incredible voice, I hope someday she comes back down to Earth and lets us hear it again. If you are a fan of Melody Gardot, the person, you will probably enjoy the show. She comes across as a very charming, funny person on stage. If you are a fan of Melody Gardot, her music, you might be disappointed by this show.

Been a big, no, HUGE fan since Worrisome Heart first came out. Wonderful show, but I miss the purity of the Melody of her earlier shows and her original band. The new sax player and bass player were excellent and talented, but it was all just a little too noisy. Really miss the vintage sound of that muted trumpet too. Just a little too much going on. Almost seems like she's trying a little too hard to be cool, which is a shame, because she is so incredibly talented, beautiful, etc without all the embellishment. Guess artists must move on and "grow". I guess for me, the Melody of 'old' will always be a sweet memory... * sigh *

Unbelievably fantastic concert! Melody and her top notch band (drums, sax, upright bass) transported you sonically to a new plane. Her show (and I mean SHOW), was a dynamic blend of serious jazz, cabaret, soul, and hauntingly beautiful ballads. Her playful banter in between songs and sharp wit, made it much more than a concert. I told my wife that I felt like I was in an "old movie" style extravaganza, and was witness to an extraordinary concert experience. DO NOT MISS HER SHOW the next time she rolls back into Portland. I promise you, you will NEVER forgive yourself! 5*****easily. A complete evening.

Almost David Lynch-esque set and beautiful lighting, with incredible performances from all band members. Nothing compared, though, to the moment when Melody began to sing. She has the most exquisite command of this, her primary instrument, but I was also amazed by her command of piano and guitar. And sex appeal. If you can afford it, go. Especially in these difficult times... music can help us get away for a moment.

The opener was pretty awesome, Frederico Aubele. I feel like sexy was the mood of the evening. He was a very sexy, Spanish singer. Then Melody Gardot came out and was just amazing..her vocals, insane. Her band was awesome. Her show was really like a show; you were engaged from start to finish. She was so sexy and confident; I want to be just like her!! I will definitely be at her next show.

She was able to hold the entire audience at the edge of their seat for the whole time. The musicians behind her are so go that each one could do a concert on their own. The combo was just wonderful.

This was hands down the best show I have ever been to, and I saw a side of the Fillmore that I did not expect. My friend and I walked into the venue to find tables, chairs, and table service! It was amazing to sit and enjoy the amazingness that was Melody Gardot. Melody had an amazing stage presence and segway-ed into her songs with musical genius. Mr. Everything (saxaphonist, clarinetist, flutist) was incredible -- he could play his tenor and alto sax at the same time! Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, the bassist busted out with an amazing solo, which I can't even describe with words. Drummer was also amazing. My friend and I were speechless after the show. If Melody is coming anywhere near your town, be sure to get tickets. You won't be disappointed!!

Melody and her band were fantastic. They ramped up the jazz elements in this live performance highlighting her talented jazz ensemble. Seeing her casually move from piano to guitar to vocals, I realize she is even more incredibly talented than she seems in her albums. The lighting added a magical quality to her already dramatic music. And her live persona is funny, and charming. I'd highly recommend seeing her live.

I've had her records going on repeat pretty much nonstop since I discovered her last November. I was prepared for a night of soaring ballads and somber chat between tunes. What I (and everyone at the Fillmore) got was an utterly spectacular balls out smoky Shanghai nightclub circa 1940 jazz extravaganza. Melody is an AMAZING entertainer with a ridiculously talented band behind her (sax, upright & drums). Every rendition of her songs was a fabulous re-imagination of what she'd written, with euphoric bootyshaking highs and deeply satisfying slow moments. WOW. See her immediately, fork over the 50 bucks, whatever. One of the best shows I've ever seen, period.

I do not want to spend too much time describing Federico Aubele's performance. Nice. That is all I am to say. Good voice, romantic guitar. Nice. Melody Gardot rocked the house. I expected her concert to be good and entertaining but she exceeded all expectations. Top notch jazz cats in her group, supportng her. Great voice, wonderful musician (plays piano and guitar). Would see her again and again.
