Laura Viers at the Mercury Lounge was intimate and lovely. The space is just big enough that it can fit a lot of people all in at once, but it doesn't take away from the intimacy of the show. You wouldn't get that feel at a bigger place. Laura was beyond cute and extremely talented. Every word and note out of her and her band was pure bliss! On the venue: A friend of mine didn't have time for ticket master and bought it at the door. They warned us once we bought it and left we couldn't go back in. We ate dinner very fast and made it back just in time. But, lesson learned to buy it on Ticketmaster!

Laura Veirs has a very individual style with exquisite phrasing, interesting lyrics and songs with a powerful emotional kick. Loved the new album material while some old faves sounded very fresh too. Highly articulate and underrated performer who is well worth catching, particularly in an intimate setting like the Mercury Lounge. Memorable evening.

Great show. It was a tour kick off with no faults. The mix of old and new songs was great she and her three backing players sounded on point.

Laura Veirs and her band played gorgeous songs with lush instrumentation. The space was crowded, but cozy and not super sweaty. Hard to see above all the tall people hoarding the front rows, but it was worth it to peek in between heads and see the adorable (and pregnant) Laura singing and strumming the banjo and offering a few quick anecdotes about being on the road and past trips to NYC. I'd see her show again anytime!!!

With July Flame, her new album, and this tour, Veirs has moved to a new level, both artistically and commercially. So this gig, in a tiny and wonderful club, had that special aura that comes when an artist is astonishingly good, entirely original, and (you note with regret) will likely never again play in such cosy confines. Veirs has vaulted from being an intriguing indie alt-folkie to being perhaps the most interesting new American songwriter to emerge, in any genre, in the past decade or so. Even more so than on July Flame, which is superb, the songs came to life here in all their poetic quirkiness and emotional wallop. There's just no-one quite like her. After Veirs, who alternated between acoustic and restrained electric guitars, the band's star is a great viola player, Alex somebody, who added expressive heft to the originals and even managed to play an accelerating old-timey tune -- no mean feat on an instrument with a lower speed range than its smaller cousin, the fiddle. Don't miss this tour--not least because Veirs is seven months pregnant and presumably won't be much on the road after this spring....

The show was excellent. The band members were funny and down to earth. They are also gifted and the show was amazing. The songs were poetic and tocuhed the soul. There is something organic and raw about Luara Veirs & The Hall of Flames, yet at the same time they are crisp and there is no other band out there that can even come close. In a time where music has lost a genuine sense of poetry, substance, and effort Laura Veirs and The Hall of Flames have brought back music to us. Their performance last night was outstanding. They also have a great sense of humour about themselves which made the show even better! Rock on!

Opening band was horrible - I wondered how they got a spot opening for Laura Viers until I saw that the singer was a guitarist in Laura Viers' band. All in all, music was too low key for a venue like Mercury Lounge. Would have been better in an outdoor setting with seats.
