Daryl Hall

Daryl Hall

DARYL HALL IN CONCERT:As one-half of legendary blue-eyed soul hitmakers Hall & Oates, Daryl Hall became the voice behind some of the most iconic pop hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Blending R&B, soul, and new wave influences to fabulous effect, classics like "Maneater" and "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" established Hall as one of the best voices of his generation, as beloved for his pipes as for his catchy songwriting. Hall sounds as fresh today as he did 30 years ago, eliciting collective swoons from audiences on his 2013 tour dates with John Oates. With an induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame scheduled in 2014, the boys are in peak form, treating audiences around the US to a string of highly anticipated concerts leading up to the April ceremony.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Hall & Oates concert at the Open Air Theater at San Diego State University this past Saturday night . Daryl Hall has always been one of my favorite singer/songwriters and I have been a huge fan of "Live From Daryl's House" for the past few years. The band was smoking' hot and H&O's iconic and "original" sax man, Charlie DeChant was awesome. The packed stadium was groovin' though a fast-paced two hour set of the duo's many hits, with TWO encores featuring blistering renditions of anything they might have left out of a fan's wish list. They were absolutely on top of their game and though I remember John Oates having a great voice, I never realized what a hot guitar player he was and is. He scorched his parts and sang his ass off. Of course, Daryl Hall was, as always, the star of the show, with his great songs, killer voice and soulful style. Thank you Hall & Oates for giving us everything we asked for and more.

Seriously. Onstage for only an hour and ten minutes before starting their encores? Really? At these prices? First time seeing these guys and went because the date happened to be special. Turns out it will be the last time. $100 for 90 minutes, got way more out of the Beach Boys, and they're even older! FYI I'm not a concert novice either. Have seen hundreds of shows over the years and this one was my biggest disappointment since seeing The Firm back in the 80's.

Every year I think about getting tickets to this show, but this year I finally did it! I was truly excited since I had seen several of the "Live from Daryl's house" episodes and thought they were stellar. What a disappointment. First, they played for barely an hour. Secondly, where's the R&B? Schmaltzy renditions of good songs gone bad. I felt like I was watching a poor excuse for a cover band. Extending a song does not make it exciting or moving - it's just lazy music. Bummer.

We had great seats, the weather was perfect, and Hall & Oates were awesome! Highly recommend seeing them anywhere, but the winery is the perfect place to see any show. The only thing that would have made this show better, is they should have played longer. Rock on!

Though Hall and Oates have aged, they have done so so very graciously. While their voices have changed somewhat, they have adapted their sound to make their songs sound both like the originals, but even more soulful. It was a great concert. I advise everyone to go see them.

The show was great!! We sat in the last row of Section B and still had a great view of the stage. Enjoyed the newer songs - but really enjoyed the older classics of the 70s - which made me feel like I was in my 20s again. The venue was clean and the seats were comfortable. I've seen Hall and Oates many times over the years from 1975- present and can say they did NOT disappoint! Although I enjoyed Daryl when he toured alone I missed Johns rich harmonies. It was wonderful to see them together again. It's easy to forget how many great hits they had and as they played them one after another I smiled and hummed along all evening.Wished I could have heard "Had I known you better then" but I guess you can't play them all. Daryl's tv show is fantastic if you have 't checked it out do.

Hall & Oates have been together about 40 years, so you feel like you are with old friends when you attend their concert. You have the feeling that each performance would be different than the last, and that they are just enjoying performing and having a good time. You can tell they love the music they have produced over the years, so the set was a trip through all their hits (and some not so hits). After waiting so many years to see them perform, I was not disappointed. Would go again any day.

Hall & Oates together again, did not disappoint! The venue is one of my favorites, the sound reverberates in the sunken bowl of the Open Air Theatre at SDSU. They started the show with Maneater and both Daryl and John looked stunned at the very enthusiastic reception they received from the crowd over and over. The duo still have it and their band was very tight. Loved the percussionist, he provided an extra attraction with his moves. One of the best shows we've seen this year and we were impressed with the quality of Hall & Oates sound after all these years and the age mixture of the crowd. Even the very young were having fun! 5 Stars!!!

The band was great, the mix was over powered by the kick bass drum. I ran a professional sound company for 15 years and am familiar with why about 50% of bands have problems with this. Most of the time you couldn't hear the bass guitar. My guest is still a current musician and we have worked with groups like Big Brother and The Holding Company, Mama's and the Papa's, Pink Floyd, Willie Nelson Jim Morrison etc. We had good luck with an experienced ear walking the venue for even coverage and mix.

A very memorable evening spent with Hall & Oates and Company. H & O had their six piece band for backup. Their setlist covered the bases from 'Abandoned Luncheonette' going forward. The venue was incredible. The sound could not have been better. Awesome show with a version of "She's Gone" that brought the house down. Daryl Hall announced a live broadcast concert on Halloween night. Go to his website to check it out. Should be a hoot. These are two veteran entertainers who enjoy what they do and it shows. I could go on but I don't see the point.

This was not the show to miss. All the rumors about the harmonies being off, NOT true. The funk was there driven by the bass player driving the locomotive and joined by a super hot drummer that's got a killer driving beat. Lead guitar was amazing.....and there's John & Daryl. So many hits and they played enough of the main tunes to leave me with a super positive lasting impression. Hall and Oates gave a number of their hits a hard driving underlying beat that reaches out and grabs you. Made the beat a bit more funky and dance like....truly a great show that we all enjoyed immensely! I would highly recommend seeing H&O.

My first H&O concert. Played for about an hour, then just left the stage. Me and and girlfriend wondered why they hadn't played but 1/2 their songs. after 2 minutes they came out, and played a few more, then left the stage again. This time, they were gone for maybe 3-4 minutes, then re-appeared and played a few more songs. They were done by a little after 10 PM. I know that SB has a noise ordinance.... bust still. I think they whole *encore* thing has played itself out. Just come out and play your set, and take a bow when when you are done. I shouldn't have to sit and holler for you to come back out when I KNOW you're coming back out. Seems kind of.. I don't know.. trying not to be overly-critical here, but be original.

Outstanding show. Too many hits to fit 1 show. Never sounded better and I could tell they had a blast performing. Unusual for a show to feature only original hits without solo works - thus the tempo rose to a frenzied crescendo. Started going to their solo and group gigs since '75. Again, never better.

Many years ago Schaefer and then Dr. Pepper used to sponsor summer concerts at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. For $5 to $15 you could see top acts surrounded by NYC s green oasis. Later the concerts moved to the pier next to the Intrepid (where I did not see U2 because who knew they were going to explode and become an arena act?) but it wasn t quite the same. And then the concerts stopped although we do have SummerStage now. Twice I saw Hall & Oates at those concerts. Both times Daryl Hall made me cry. I don t know what it was but there is a quality in his voice when I heard it live that moved me to tears. So there was a lot for him to live up to when I went to see the live version of Live From Daryl's House at the Beacon Theater. Special guests were Allen Stone and Miss Sharon Jones. I d never heard of Stone but I knew Miss Jones would live up to all my expectations. It was a beautiful spring day so I walked the twenty blocks up to the Beacon instead of switching trains. My seat was in the second row of the lower balcony in the center section. What a great seat. While we were waiting there was a screen showing past performances from Live From Daryl s House. First the LFDH Band came out and started playing and then Hall and the lead guitarist came out to huge applause. I ve found mentions here and there online of the band members but I can t find a full list. Hall played electric and acoustic guitar. There was a lead guitar, keyboard player, electric bassist, drummer, percussionist, and two saxophone/flute players. The band played a few songs the show opener, It s Uncanny, Save Me, and new single, Eyes for You. Then Hall introduced Allen Stone by saying that he had an instant connection with him and that Stone reminded him of a younger version of himself. As soon as Stone opened his mouth you knew why. He sings the same type of blue-eyed soul that made Hall famous. With Stone as with all his guests Hall traded verses so you could hear the maturity in his voice compared with 24-year-old Stone. But Stone held his own with both Hall and Miss Jones. Stone and Hall sang Celebrate Tonight, Figure It Out, and Unaware. Unaware is the song that Stone is most known for and it is a wonder that someone so young created a song so simple and so soulful. Then Hall introduced Miss Sharon Jones as one of the wonders of the world. She came out wearing a red, black, and silver fringed and sequined mini-dress and grabbed the mic and never stopped moving. She engaged everyone in the band and everyone in the audience. She started with 100 Days, 100 Nights and had the band start playing it with a reggae beat so that she could dance around the stage. During Tell Me Miss Jones sang the guitar parts and dueled with the lead guitarist and then she and Hall scatted. Miss Jones asked Hall if he knew her life story and he said he did and the band launched into I Learned the Hard Way. Then the weirdest thing happened. Hall explained that on his show they always break for a cooking spot. But because of the fire marshal they couldn t set up a grill on the stage at the Beacon. So we watched a video of Tony Luke showing Hall, Stone, and Miss Jones how to make a pizza cheesesteak (Hall s favorite). Towards the end of the video the audience was getting restless but the band returned just in time with Luke, who sang a song. A cheesesteak song. He wanted the audience to sing the chorus cheesesteak Philly cheesesteak and being a NYC audience most of us refused. But that and the occasional feedback (and the buzzing during the first half of the program) were the only problems. Hall took the lead for one song, then Stone for Say So, and then everyone for Everytime You Go Away. Miss Jones took one verse that blew everyone away. She said the song reminded her of her mother who had recently passed and then she did another song for her mother, Got a Thing on My Mind, where she kicked off her shoes and danced all over the stage. Stone did another song and then everyone sang I Can t Go For That. Everyone left the stage and keyboards were set up for Hall. Everyone came back and sang You Make My Dreams with the audience bouncing and clapping and singing along and then the night was over. This time Hall did not make me cry but he did live up to my expectations. It was still a gorgeous night so I decided to walk the twenty blocks downtown to the subway home to Queens. But since I was in the neighborhood I stopped for the recession special at Gray s ($4.95 for two hot dogs and a drink) because who knew when I d be back.

It was a great night and terrific weather. Darryl and John started out on a high night but then began dragging out the songs with too much filler. This went on and on. The crowd never got into it until the finale when people started standing up and dancing. Hall and Oates are a classic act which still has it. They just need to play their songs and stop the extended 'jamming' filler. It messed with the whole evening.

Hall and Oates were just great. Still hitting the mark all these years later. My wife and I had tickets for the lawn. Its been two years since we attended Live At the Garden. In past years we've thoroughly enjoyed the events, often attending them all in a season. So we were very excited to be able to come back for the final event this year. This was also our first time attending since the facility upgrades to include the new permanent stage. We enjoyed and appreciated the modifications made to the lawn area directly infront of the stage going back to the facilties. It appears that the trees were trimmed or removed to increase the space. We had a couple of pointed concerns though that we did not have in past concerts: 1. The video screen behind the control tower was sub par at best and nothing like the others. 2. The light strings hanging in the trees should be dimmed when the act is on stage. Maybe not all the way off, but it seems like the room light was turned on for those sitting in that area. And when the light is on, people talk. And talk and talk and talk, spoiling the show for those around them. 3. The talking would not have been so bad had the volume been where it needed to be. I'm in my fifties and I dont need Megadeath volume levels, but come on. We could not really hear what they were saying and the music sounded like it was coming from a distant speaker. TURN UP THE VOLUME AND TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS! thanks, John

First time seeing Hall & Oates live, was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately we were near the back, not far from the entrance. I don't think the sound system was set up to handle the large crowd, because we could not hear well. Also, the screen was often cutting out. While we had a great time and would see them again, and we also heard that the sound was better of course if you were near the front- we were disappointed that the sound and screen were not set up to handle a sold out crowd. As a matter of fact, there were many sitting near us that left early and one even fell asleep.

Great night of fun, dancing, singing along out loud, they sang most of their hits except a couple of my favorites\u2026. 2 encores. They sounded pretty good, the music was great, DH didn't quite finish all his words or hit all those high notes but for the most part they put on a great show. Mayor Hawthorne opened up for them and he was amazing! The moon was out and it was a beautiful evening. You have the typical pot smokers around which workers never do anything about and horrible traffic conditions, but we got dropped off and picked up so we didn't have to deal with that, which I highly recommend.

I have to say my husband and I were disappointed with this concert. This is the probably the third time we have seen Hall n Oates in concert and most likely will be the last time. They started around 8:30 and finished at 10:00 they played 14 songs most of which were drawn out with a lot of instrumental playing after a little bit of singing. After a while I got bored and was ready to go home. We always stay until the last song is played when we go to concerts but not this time we left before the last two songs.

I love Hall and Oates. It was the music I listen too preteen. But to only play for 1 hour 10 minutes then come out twice playing a total of 3 more songs thats not worth the $165 i paid. ALL other groups like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles ETC play for 3 hours plus and give you their all for the fans. Hall and Oates picked a cheap opener and just laughed all the way to the bank.

I wouldn't have missed this show. Daryl was at his best. Always let me know when Hall and Oates are performing anywhere. I WAS disappointed that my tickets in the A Row, Sec. A were way off to the side with many, many added chairs. Couldn't see Daryl, but just closed my eyes and listened.

Concert was incredible. They played a lot of their older music that you don't usually hear at their concerts. they played non stop for 1 hour and 30 minutes and didn't miss a beat! Great show as always!

Had a great time at Cal Coast Union Open Air Theatre. First time there, we will return. Music was great. Crowd was fun. It was definitely a wonderful evening. Thanks Hall & Oates for another memorable evening. This was my third time seeing them. They never disappoint.

So talking amongst the crowd it appeared that the band was in Vegas the night before and it showed in Hall's singing. He routinely dropped out of notes where he usually hits them in his signature sound. Was pretty disappointed at that and the folks I spoke with felt that it was partly due to scheduling of back to back shows on consecutive nights. I spent good money on this show and feel that back to back nights on aging rockers is a bad idea. Love the band but not the compact schedule it does on their performances.

What a great night! For a few of the songs it seemed Daryl Hall wasn't in great voice, but he either warmed up as the evening wore on or it was just that he wanted to sing things a bit differently. Whichever it was, it ended up being a lovely early Fall evening. I love Hall & Oates!

Very disappointing. They did an extended set on each song that went on so long you forgot what song they were playing. The sax player had a solo on each song--too much. They wrapped after only an hour. Came out for two encores and finally played four of their hits that were more like the original. Darryl Hall seems to have lost his voice. Too bad. Saw them many years ago and they were great back then.

My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Hall & Oats and company at Cal Coast Open Air Theatre and were treated to a compilation of rockinsoul music that kept us on our feet almost the entire evening. Daryl and company incorporated saxophone solos, Guitar virtuosos and smoothly transitioning to one of his many talents, the piano, created an unforgettable evening we will never forget. (To top it off they played one of my favorites-"She did it in a minute"

The show exceeded all expectations. Daryl and John mixed it up with old favorites and new material. Their band was excellent-all consummate musicians that played with passion and great energy. Don't miss this tour. Daryl Hall and John Oates are a must see!

They took forever to get to a completely set up stage. Darryl's voicr started out a bit shaky but improved. Played all the hits and didn't try to spring any "new music" on us so that was a plus... however, after maybe 8 songs, they left the stage. Okay fine. Encore encore! They came back out - played two more and left again... Really? Two encores? A bit arrogant really. Decent show - not great - not worth $80 per ticket. Time to wrap it up, H & O... Yep - "She's gone."

The music was good, but not as good as on Daryl's House. The light show was a throw back to the seventies.

I have seen Daryl and John in concert at least 25 times and they never fail to get me off my seat and dance the night away!! And it appears the rest of the crowd felt the same way! The only negative I can say is that apparently they didn't do a sound check before the concert because Daryl had to keep making hand signals to the guy off to the left of the stage trying to get his sound up or down.... or who knows. He was NOT a happy camper and that did take away from the fun of the show. But overall, a wonderful night with my favorite Blue Eyed Soul Singer!!!

Daryl Hall sounded fantastic with John Oates. Being able to go up near the stage and dancing so close to the band was amazing. For my first Hall and Oates concert I was thoroughly entertained.

I was very disappointed in the show. The set was lame. Songs were turned into big band music. People around us wanted to dance. There were 4 couples in front of us. The women sat together before the show started to prepare to dance the whole show. They danced 3 songs. Very disappointed.

I was never a giant fan of H&O when younger. I really liked a couple of songs and the rest were ok. But after watching Daryl's House, I have grown to really appreciate how he sings now and his spin on both the old and new songs. This evening was as expected. As Daryl and Darius Rucker were commenting, folks go to our concerts and want to hear their favorite songs, and we are going to deliver that to them. This evening was exactly that, although I would not have been sorry to hear some of Daryl's own newer, soulful music!

Excellent venue. Good seats. Great sound. All perfect except Hall and Oates never showed up. Yeah. They played their hits. Sounded just like their recordings. Nothing new. Nothing experimental. No revised versions. Just the same old arrangements. They just phoned it in. Sad. I have seen them do so much more with their works in the past. But this time, they just pushed through the set. Just another stop on the road. Very disappointing and actually boring.

Been wanting to see them since I was young. Now in my early 60s. They were everything I hoped they would be. My only complaint was at the very beginning some 30 year-olds stood up to dance and blocked everyone's view. Fortunately they didn't block mine, but I felt bad for the ones they did. These were people of all ages who now could not see at all! If they would have blocked my view, this plus-60-year-old would have found my younger self and forced their asses into their seats. The Bowl should monitor this, especially when it's right from the beginning of the show. It's not fair to the ticket buyers to have to put up with this.

Warmup band MUTLU is very talented but he appeared without his band and sounded thin. H & O are great, excellent sound, great band, but they played only about 90 minutes, seemed about 30 minutes too short. For the expense and hassle to get there, it would have been nice to get a little more music.

Music was great! Unfortunately between the drunks and everybody holding up Cell phones during the performance, the experience was not worth the price of admission. After being a patron of SB Bowl for a very long time not sure I will attend another concert there.

Hall and Oates were good. Unfortunately we had never been to the SB Bowl before and it is a freaking disaster. Takes forever to get in and out due to the age of the bowl and no improvements seem to have ever been made. Opening act started about 7 for a show called for 7:30 and he (no idea who he was) was done by 7:30 but it was about 8:15 to 8:30 before Hall and Oates came out. They finished at 9:45 because the bowl had to close by 10. Total waste of time and money.

We had an incredible time at this concert! Had never been to Uptown Amphitheatre at NC Music Factory and it was more than we imagined! My husband and I took our son to his first concert and it did not disappoint! Our seats were amazing, the music was fantastic and parking was easy. We had VIP passes for Club Access and that was SO worth the money! Hall & Oates sound just as good as they did in the 80's! Wonderful! Can't wait to return to the Music Factory for another show!
