My title says it all. Pavement was great. I've been waiting to see these guys for 15 years and they didn't disappoint. The venue sucked though.... the sound and the vibe at Roy Wilkins Auditorium is always terrible. There are very few bands that can get me to pay for a ticket at RW aud.

A band always performs better when they're loose, affable and genuinely happy in the moment. Pavement was all these at the Pritzker Pavilion on 9/13. Just a few months after headlining the Pitchfork Music Festival across town, Pavement came back to Chicago for another memorable reunion show. This time, they seemed less tense and more comfortable with each other. The two hour show was highlighted by songs like "Stop Breathin'," "Perfume-V" and two encores that had "Box Elder" and the country-tinged "Range Life." Pavement fans know that a reunion tour is where it ends for these merry pranksters; no way there'll be a new album. But perhaps another go-around in another decade or so?

The show was absolutely sensational. A 30-song setlist covering their entire career, starting from Silence Kid and going all the way to Conduit for Sale! This set featured all of the hits, and all of my favorite deeper cuts, and they were performed masterfully by the band. Amazing to hear all of my favorite songs live for the first time, as I got into Pavement just after the break up. Also caught their set at Coachella, which they also rocked.

Great show! i had heard Pavement was hit or miss live, but this show was great from start to finish. i had about a 20 minute span there when i was smiling from ear to ear like a kid in a candy store as they played gem after gem. who cares if they got together to make money, last night showed they were having a lot of fun and were not thinking about the paycheck.

Great show! Wonderful to see the boys back together. Quick chewy versions of many great songs. No overt tension between band mates and no showboating. High energy and lots of personality. Great interaction with crowd. That being said the sound engineers were probably the worst I have ever experienced at a live show. This goes for the opening band as well. Since this reunion is probably a one time tour, it's a bummer that the sound was so bad!

I was rather amazed how good they sounded after such a long time. The last time I saw Pavement was in 1997 at the end of the Brighten the Corners tour. They were better last night. I would venture to say they were great last night.

Great set list, a little rusty but that is to be expected. Malkmus was sharp. I want the job of the guy that is their designated cow-bell, screamer and sound effects guru.

They played all of old hits you could think of and only one off their latest, plus two encores! It was my first time seeing them live since I got into them right before they dispanded ten years ago. Hopefully we will see more of them in the future cause they ROCK!

"I'm waiting, waiting, waiting" no longer. The latest stop on Pavement's reunion tour far surpassed all expectations. SM and the boys paced themselves through an incredibly tight and inspired set just sort of two hours that included almost all of Slanted and Enchanted along with gems from the rest of the catalog. Last night put any memories of the fractiousness of the 1999 El Rey shows far out of my mind. The band of my dreams.

Drove up from LA to see this show and Pavement did not disappoint! Opening band (Quasi) rocked and Pavement jammed. Their show was comprehensive, playing songs from all of their five albums. The Greek Theater was an awesome, intimate venue for his show. Only complaint is that Berkeley needs signs on campus to poin the way to the theater. Spent WAY too much time trying to find the venue. Thanks Pavement!

I have wanted to see this band for ages, and never thought I would have a chance. They definitely did not disappoint. The band play a solid set and never missed a beat. It did not seem like it had been ten years since they played together but was as if they were playing in their prime. They still look the same and rocked as hard as ever. The crowd had a good time, and sang along to every song. Gary Young showed up and played the last few songs with them and really seemed to enjoy performing more than anyone. Great show!!!

The title says it all. This show was pure rock and roll. There was enough flannel to sink the Bismark and energy to carry out through out the entire show. If you can, GO! (The sound at Agganis Arena was pretty bad, I wouldn't jump at the chance at seeing a show there again....)

I traveled from DC to New York in anticipation of finally seeing [one of my all-time favorites] Pavement perform live. I had purchased the tickets almost exactly a year in advance, so I was a pent-up ball of emotions and expectation. I avoided reading about their other Central Park shows, though I did familiarize myself with the set-lists. I got in line at 5:30 PM and grabbed myself a seat...then all I could do was wait. The Beets opened. I didn't care for them and almost wondered how they gained the coveted spot. They put in a good effort though, and tided us over until Pavement took the stage at 9PM. I was in awe, it seemed unreal that they were right in front of me. Malkmus presided over his group and Bob Nastanovich provided comedic relief, as per usual. It was great just to see them together again and feel nostalgic. Malkmus's gravelly vocals and guitar antics took me right back to the 90's. It was a marathon set, and they played a little bit of everything. My long list of favorites includes "Elevate Me Later," "Summer Babe," "Frontwards," "Shady Lane," and "Perfume-V". I can only wish they had played my all-time favorite "Texas Never Whispers" and/or Terror Twilight sleeper hit "Major Leagues". I am glad that I made the trek to NY rather than seeing them at Virgin Freefest the next day. Though there was less intimacy than I would have liked, the show was phenomenal and I couldn't have asked for anything more.

What an amazing lineup: Sonic Youth AND Pavement. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. Pavement sounds completely different live, like a cover band with each individual musician playing their own different versions of Pavement songs. And Bob N. joined the audience! They're much more fun live than I had anticipated. The great weather for an outdoor concert was a plus as well. Amazing.

Would have rather not have No Age and 30 min extra from Sonic Youth and Pavement. Hollywood Bowl sounds wonderful especially considering it's a large outdoor venue. The headliner, Pavement rocked it while they were out there but played less than an hour set. Kind of disappointed in that.

The two opening bands rocked satisfactorily... Sonic youth (being cast as the headliner in the local media) produced a showing true to their age, yet still brought the dirty distortion we've all grown to love them for. More to the point was the fact that after swearing off LA (as most people do at some point) PAVEMENT still brought all the excitement, animosity, & quirky rock songs that never gave them the mainstream allure as their favorite band, Sonic youth, but for true fans; there wasn't enough time to satisfy everyone's favorite songs. I truly celebrate their entire catalog!

I had high hopes coming into the show. Pavement are a long time favorite and I was certifiably giddy all week thinking about the show. I really wasn't expecting much from Sonic Youth and No Age I could take or leave, but nonetheless I was excited. I got to the venue a little late. I completely missed No Age's set, and I feel sorry I didn't give them even a passing listen, but when we sat down and were assaulted by Sonic Youth's amazing wall of guitars, I was as happy as could be. From a group that looks made up of your cooler friend's parents, these guys can seriously rock. Amazing sound, and I could have sat through at least another hour of their material and not wiggled a bit in my seat. The mix was also great and sounded wonderful in the bowl. The Hollywood Bowl has a tendency to get muddled, but Sonic Youth played that to their advantage and they sounded spectacular. Pavement came out next, played Cut Your Hair and got the ball rolling. Great set from them as well, though I would have loved to hear Embassy Row live. I'm partial to that song. There were some weak moments in the set, mostly by captain screaming no rhythm (whoever the hell that was), but Malkmus and crew were able to take the helm again and the night was pretty stellar. I will say the sound was less than perfect for Pavement. Definitely not up to the same mix as Sonic Youth had, but I didn't mind. It was great to see them live and something I had wished I could have done years ago. Great show, and highly recommended.

Pavement put on a good show: did bang up versions of the best songs from Slanted and Crooked Rain, and showed the same loose exuberance that made the band's reputation. Unfortunately, they had to follow Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth exhibited the musicianship and interplay of a band that has been playing consistently for 30 years. At this point, they are less playing than conducting a sonic orchestra. They now have the virtuosity to bring to fruition all of the ideas they have sketched out during their career. I can think of no other band ever that has maintained this level of vitality into a fourth decade. A live album is long overdue. No Age were fairly unexceptional.

My lady and I took a park and ride bus from lakewood which is well worth it for five bucks. Sonic youth was ok...sounded a little tired. First, stellar promotion by the LA Phil - always the best shows when they promote it. Pavement, not a band that is traditional known to be good live, but they were tight, sounded great, and looked like they were having a great time. It was not to be missed. Sonic Youth performed as quartet, hadn't seen that in forever, but it is how they should be. Rocking.

I was very excited for this. I never got the chance to see the band before the breakup. The newly reformed PAVEMENT is playing better ( in my opinion) than they ever have live. Yet despite having fairly decent seats, the sound at the Agganis was mediocre at best,(as always) bordering on poor. This show would go over 100x better at the Orpeum. The sound severely hobbled what could have been a great show. The setlist was great! All the best with just enough semi-b-sides to keep us hardcore fans happy. I just couldn't get over the buried vocals. Malkmus was his trademark self, sort of awkward in an appealing way. Nastanovich was a perfect madman with ceaseless energy and great screaming and banter. I found Mark Ibold to be solid and engaging and occupying the center spot as usual. Spiral looks like an insurance salesman now, but was playing quite nicely.

Saw 2 of their 4 shows at Central Park; while both shows were great regardless, Wednesday's felt more epic if simply because a thunderstorm came through halfway during the set. Though they had to stop playing because of the lightning, the band and the fans waited it out a good 20-30 minutes for at least the lightning to stop (though still raining!) before they continued on. Because the fans were so willing to wait, the band rewarded with a 2 and 1/2 hour set that was memorable! Thursday's 2 hour show had no weather theatrics, but Malkmus was more vocal in between songs, thanking fans, the band, and just random, humorous thoughts on life itself. The set list for both shows had all the favorites but while Wednesday's flowed better and was more diverse from their catalog, Thursday's had them play some of their more obscure songs, especially stuff from 'Westing (by Musket and Sextant)' and 'Wowee Zowee.' All in all, both shows were top rate and memorable for Pavement playing in such an amazing venue (Rumsey Playfield in Central Park).

I've liked Pavement since I first heard songs from Slanted and Enchanted on WNYU's "New Afternoon Show" back in 1992. Quirky and off-kilter, these guys quickly became the blueprint band for college radio station rotated indie rock, but I've always felt they were much more than that. They just make great music. I'm really thankful that I heard them when they first started, because their music sounded very fresh, and very different than most of the crap that was flooding the airwaves at that time. Not quite grunge, definitely not metal, no big hair, they stood out with their talent, and laid back, let's-not-take-ourselves-too-seriously, approach to creating outstanding tunes that will always be a big part of the evolution of modern "rock" as we know it. The Central Park show to end the Summerstage season was damned good. 2 hours basically scratches the surface of their body of work. They didn't play one of my favorites on Friday night (Old to Begin), but I thought they did a great job in any regard. They played many of their classics, (Silence Kit, Summer Babe, Range Life, No Life Singed Her, Trigger Cut, Starlings of the Slipstream, Rattled by the Rush, etc.) and all those in attendance including myself were pretty stoked about it. Not mad at the setlist. I mistakenly got the tickets a year ago thinking they were for September 25th of 2009. One of my better mistakes. Well worth the wait. Highly recommended. Only reason I didn't give it five stars is 'cause they missed a couple of my fav songs, but with an extensive body of work such as theirs, it's expected. For those of you who weren't around to see them the first go-round (in the early 90's), understand that Pavement is one of the great pioneers of indie rock. Get to know 'em, open a window, put your feet up, start from the beginning (Slanted and Enchanted), and work your way up. Enjoy. If you were at the show, consider yourself lucky to have witnessed these guys. They rock better than most.

To say pavements show was unforgettable is not even half of a positive description of how amazing the show was. "Times New Viking", an indie/synth/pop/noise band opened for them and got the crowd rocking out and totally in the right mindset to see one of the founding fathers of indie rock. When pavement took to the stage it was like witnessing a godly endeavor. In a 25 song-long set, gems such as "Range Life", "Gold Soundz", and "Spit on a Stranger", were among many of the songs played. Before going, I didn't know how the band was going to sound live (back in the nineties they were known for getting wild and doing whatever they felt like, Malkmus singing entirely off key...but thats why we love them in the first place right?) Anyway, I was expecting the show to sound somewhat like their album Slanted and Enchanted; raw, loud, and bold full of angst. To my surprise, the band was still playing in their "Terror Twilight" ways, playing everything neat and auditory pleasing which would please the slightest pavement fan, while holding onto their longtime fans with songs such as "Stereo", and "Grounded. All-in-all, it was hands down the most amazing show I've ever been to (despite the lightening storm that paused the show for a half hour). Waiting a year for the show only added to the suspense. Fans know Pavement has been playing at this location all week, I'm sure they will continue to please fans with their more than generous reunion setlists.

The band, the view, the weather refreshing, the crowd cool. Opening band that girl from Rilo Kiley breaks my heart. Singing along with Pavement brings me back to the good old 90's. Why in the world would you want to go back to the Cheesetown 80's? I would see them again to get a sane uplift from this crazy world we live in. Thank you Pavement.

The Pavement show is a must see!!! I had never seen a Pavement show before. The music is still as great as it was in the 90's, and represents well my generation! I'm so glad they came back together for a tour!

This show was best show I've seen in years. The performance was tight and well executed. I'd see a Pavement again without question. Please come down and rock Raleigh, North Carolina. You will be more than welcome!!!

so, pavement was amazing and they rule and deserve all the superlatives i can give them. But for such a beloved band, a band that hasn't been playing together in years, one who's reunion was so highly touted, and for how expensive the tickets were, the people at the show didn't seem to excited. rather, they seemed annoyed to be there. You don't have to dance like a crazy person, but jeez, could you clap after a song? of course, there were pockets of people who were having fun and being thankful for the songs, but i wasn't near them, and had to be excited by myself. come on, people, it's pavement! have an awesome time. you really aren't too cool for this school. also, they didn't play zurich is stained, here, or ...carrot rope. but that's ok.

Sublime! What an incredible show. Fantastic venue down on the waterfront across from Manhattan, perfect weather for it too! And of course Pavement were superb! I have waited over a decade to see this band as I missed their last tour in the UK when I was much younger in years. I remember feeling so jealous of all my friends who did go back then but now it is they who have the green eyes!

I'm definitely a fan of Pavement but really only knew their Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain album well (and Slanted and Enchanted) not so well. Though it was less exciting and enjoyable to hear the songs I didn't know so well, I was impressed with their musicality, especially the guitar work at every turn. Sometimes I just had to close my eyes to absorb the music with my ears and feel the rhythms on my chest. And of course the tracks I knew were amazing to hear live. I didn't know what Pavement's live reputation was but I thought the show was just great and would highly recommend it to any level of Pavement fan.

The show was fantastic. They are a great band and they really pulled it together. The too cool for school hipster crowd could have had a little bit more energy but that's Williamsburg for you. As usual, it would have been nice if I could drink a beer while watching the show from in front of the stage. Make it 21 and over; I don't really care how you do it.

THe show was awesome. I had been looking forward to it for six months and it was everything I had hoped for and more. I was, like the reviewer before me, really sad they didn't play summer babe. But great over all. Spit on a Stranger, amazing!

An excellent show from a now classic band. Too bad they did not turn on the overhead speakers on the lawn at Pritzker Pavillion! Otherwise, an fantastic show!

One of the best shows I've seen all year. Playing for almost if not two hours, this show blew their pitchfork performance out of the water. They sounded great in the amphitheater, steven even suggested it would make a great ice skating rink with Joan of Arc playing. Cannot wait to see them with sonic youth in LA!

This was definitely not the Pavement of old, but it was a pretty nice nostalgia ride. They played almost all of Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain. Malkmus seems to be in better playing shape than the rest of the gang, and they're not totally tight, but that just adds to the appeal.

The band played their best songs for about two hours...and I mean their best songs, not just the most popular ones. They were engaging without too much chatter between songs. I would love to hear new material.

The Pavement show in KC was awesome. They were tight. Pavement tore through almost all of their hits. I'm only sad that they didn't play Summer Babe.

This show was jaw dropping. Aside from the opener, Poison Control Center. They were more of a visual act, less so acoustically. Pavement was a beautiful sight to see, let alone hear live. The mixing was great, and captured Pavement's sound impeccably.

Pavement was bomb. Killed it. Epic. Internet catch words. Stop Breathin' was the highlight for me. And how 'bout a little Beetles to end it? Thanks for stopping by in the mid-west.

Good, but not great. I am not one who is disappointed when the live performance isn't "like the record", and I understand that, for the artist, playing the same thing night after night, year after year, can be boring. BUT, the beginning of every tune was a case of, "What is this?" for me. I'm also not averse to jamming or doing a variation on the theme, but it seemed there was a deliberate attempt to show how differently the songs could be done -- which is OK if it does not sound forced, which it did. I had seen the band before at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO. I love their music, and I loved those shows. One of the fascinating parts of the band is the diversity of their following. Without generalizing about groups, I observed that the geeks, nerds, yuppies, hippies, hipsters, rabid r&r fans, frat boys and girls(?), jocks, devil-sign metal-leaning (usually) dudes, old farts like me, drop-outs, burn-outs, are all parts of their audiences. You have got to love that.

Pavement was my all time favorite band in my early twenties and I never thought I was going to get to see them live ever. I envied every person that got to see them before they retired as a band. I love Pavement..almost started crying at the show because they were so awesome!

Pavement rocked it and proved why they are one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years. Not that they had anything to prove, though. And for a reunion tour, they have done it right. Pick a huge selection from the entire library and play for a long time. Two total hours and I can't say there's anything I thought was missing.

Considering I've only seen Pavement one other time, in 1997 or 1998 at Seattle's B-Shoot, this show was indeed amazing. The song selections were among the best, from their opening with Gold Soundz to Frontwards at/near the encore. They sounded well practiced and tight, especially compared to that show in the 90's. There was also playful banter between Stephen and the audience, like when he said something like "You thought you could get away with going to a show at Edgefield, didn't you?, but you can't." The stage was set up well, with "Terror Twilight" lighting drapped loosely above the two drummer's kits. The lines for food, drink, and restroom were also well laid out, which was confirmed by my concert mate. Thanks Pavement--you should do it again sometime.

it was a much better night for a concert, than the last one (Vampire Weekend), again Pavement was not a band that i was familiar with, but being it was at the Edgefield, it was a no brainer to buy tickets. they put on a pretty good show.

Amongst hundreds of Gen X ers and younger fans in the know, Portland received a charged display of perfect sounds! Seeing Pavement live was everything I wanted it to be. Both SM and Spiral Stairs playing many classics, all the while, with Bob Nostanovich feverously adding back-up vocals and entertaining quips, made it all too perfect. We re all a little older than their first iteration, but they played long and strong, as the set list demonstrates. I didn t hear anyone disappointed, and with the range of their catalog that they played, I don t know how one could be. From pre-Slanted B-Sides, like Box Elder, to The Hexx from Terror Twilight, they packed in songs from throughout the band s existence. See it.
