All that you could reasonably ask for from the venerable Ry. An hour and 45 minutes of beautiful guitar playing. Great songs, old and new. Very good sound. Solid backing band. And the awesome backing vocals of the Hamiltones. Throw in some Ry-typical, aptly pointed socio-political commentary and a more than enthusiastic full house, and you have a perfect night.

Stunning night with Ry Cooder last night at the Wilbur, 2nd night of the tour. Most of the set drawn from the great new record "The Prodigal Son" with a few oldies thrown in such as a foot stomping, rip roaring "Jesus on the Mainline." An incredible solo set with "Vigilante Man" with a new verse written by Ry. A tribute to Johnny Cash with "Get Rhythm." A LOT of fantastic guitar playing and singing better then i remembered in the past.

I have been a Cooder fan for 40 years, but never have heard him live, so when I heard Ry was playing the Birchmere, I was eagerly anticipating the show. I was expecting to hear an eclectic mix of bluesy, old timey, latin, and maybe obscure and oddball tunes. When I bought my tickets, I learned that Skaggs & White were also on the bill, so I added in some bluegrass and old fashioned country into the mix. Little did I realize that the show would be dominated by Ricky Skaggs performing his blend of country, gospel and bluegrass. The picking was fine, the singing pretty good, and the selection of tunes dull as dishwater. It's not that I hate mountain music - I attend many bluegrass festivals, the most recent being last May. But when Ry Cooder heads the lineup, I expect to hear a different blend of music predominate. Count me very disappointed. Ry, please tour on your own! There was one unexpected surprise - 85 +- year old Buck White playing a rambunctious honky tonk piano on almost every song. Who knew that he could do that and do it so well?

Ry Cooder was doing roots music before it had a name. It was such a treat to see him along with Ricky Skaggs, and the White sisters (along with their rocking dad!). One of the best shows I've seen in years. My face was sore from the constant grin I was wearing.

Spiritually inspirational display of artistic beauty. The show was well done and a blessing to behold. To be able to see Ry in this gospel arena was really nice. He is famous for the slide guitar and rock roots. When paired with Ricky Scaggs and Sharon White (wife), along with Sharon's father, Buck and sister for harmony, Joaquine Cooder on drums and a very talented upright bass player made a complete unit. Thanks for my Saturday night live outing.

I knew this would be a different kind of show when i saw the drums and the piano. what a treat. Loved the classic county songs. Sharon White has such a wonderful warm smile her and her sister sing like angels. Seeing Mr. White rock out on the piano at his age was inspiring. Ry Cooder was a blast. And i Have always been a fan of Ricky Skaggs. If you haven't read his book you should.

Go see Cooder, White, and Skaggs. It was possibly the best concert I have seen in my life. I had wanted to see Ry Cooder since I was a teen, and finally had the chance to see him. He played slide, 5-string bluegrass banjo, mandocello, and mandola, while Ricky Skaggs played fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, and Ricky's wife Sharon White sang like a bird and strummed acoustic. The band consisted of Cooder's son Joachim on drums, Mark Fain on upright bass, Cheryl White on vocals, and 84 years young patriarch of the White family, Buck White, on piano. It was truly a family affair, and Buck White may have stolen the show with his piano work. The music was all classic American music, mainly pre-1965 Country, Gospel, and Bluegrass. GO SEE THEM

Ads for this performance were misleading, and it was way overpriced. It consisted entirely of a tribute to Grand Old Opry standards with heavy emphasis on gospel--which was nowhere indicated in its promotion and got monotonous. All the ensemble numbers gave neither Ry Cooder nor Ricky Scaggs a chance to display their vocal and instrumental range, especially Cooder's more multicultural repertoire.

I loved every minute of this show! Ry Cooder, Sharon White, & Ricky Skaggs took us on a wonderful trip in time to the days when country music was real and right and harmonius! Buck White was a standout on the piano! All of the songs were pre-1940s and all were beautifully done, so if you enjoy old country like Hank Williams, Hank Snow, the Louvin Brothers, you will love it! Favorites for me were "Hold Whatcha Got" and the Blind Alfred Reed tune, "You Must Unfold."

This was an amazing show by musical legends. A very comfortable show that showcased many old country, bluegrass standards and a few of the artists hits. Ricky Skaggs was great as always (we have seen him before). We were surprised that Buck White and Cheryl White were with Sharon White - and they added a lot to the concert. At 84, Buck White did a great job on the piano for the whole show. Even though Ry Cooder's name was listed first, he did a great job fitting in with the group and the song selections. We hope someday to enjoy a Ry Cooder concert featuring his blue's songs, but none of those songs were played at this concert which was focused on bluegrass and country. We could have listened to this ensemble all night long - except for the uncomfortable folding chairs in the main floor area.

We enjoyed the musical ramble down memory lane, although, they performed many old bluegrass/gospel songs that I do not remember. I loved that they attributed the author or main performers of the songs. Wonderful music and performers. It was particularly delightful to see Mr Buck White having such a great time on the grand piano at his 84 years of age! Loved the little personal stories too. Would've loved a few more songs. The Uptown Theater in KC is a great place to enjoy an up-close musical event. However, the folding chairs are too close to be very comfortable, especially with no arm rests to somewhat separate the seats. Thankfully, our seats were at least padded.

Been waiting to hear Ry in concert for 40 years. Bought tickets five months before the show. His guitar playing is among the best ever; where are the current generation of kids who can play like him? Great band and background singers, played a few gems from his 37 albums!! ,along with a few new tunes. But then things really got bogged down with him playing politics. You try to get away for an evening of enjoyment, escape the daily crap that goes as news these days, pay the $200 it takes to get decent seats, and it's like the TV is still on. What is it with musicians who have to act like politicians?? Unfortunately, his actions and lyrics ruined the performance for my wife and I, and we got up and left before he was done playing. I guess musicians and politicians are really the same, all just playing to their base. On top of all this, on the way out of the theater, we got harassed by some panhandlers. Absolutely pitiful what is allowed to go on in our cities these days. The experience has left a very sour taste for me to go through the hassle of seeing live performances anymore. Probably best to break out the old vinyl, crank up the sound system, and enjoy Ry's craft and expertise that way.

Ry Cooder rarely goes on tour and it was great to finally get to see him perform. His set list included a range fron his early recordings and selections from his latest release, Prodigal Son. Included in the band line up were the Hamiltones that added to the richness of the soul songs and performed a few of their own. If you have a chance to see Ry, do it. The song selections included Get Rythym, Vigilante Man, I can t win, and other classics. Ry appeared to be enjoying himself and even cut loose with some searing instrumentals and political commentary. The Michigan Theatre is a beautiful venue that boasts a classical design and elegant feel. Despite an optimal venue for acoustics, the sound was not entirely clean. This was more of a production issue than a problem with the venue. It s unfortunate that this was the case for this show. Also, there were several people that insisted on speaking during the performance and needed to be reminded to be courteously quiet. The venue should announce House Rules reminding attendees to turn off their phones, and stop having conversations during performances.

I was really only familiar with Ry Cooder from his Buena Vista Social Club days (particularly the film docs), but I was invited to the concert by a friend, and went. Beautiful music from a beautifully in-sync group of musicians. Loved the Hamiltones--especially their "sexy soul music" solo spot while Ry took a rest. The final song from the second encore left me feeling a llittle bit hopeful about getting through what's going on now in our homeland. I felt at peace, for sure. The power of music was on display in all its glory. Thank you, Ry & Co.!!

Great concert! I drove in from Pittsburgh, and it was well worth the trip! Incomparable guitar work by Ry, and sublime singing by The Hamiltones (and although Ry s voice has been criticized, I thoroughly enjoyed his singing as well)! The packed house audience was enthusiastic, and very vocal. Between songs, Ry was engaging and funny. He did at several points (between songs, as well as within the lyrics of a few of the songs \u2014 Jesus and Woody being a prime example) express his critical views on the actions of the current presidential administration. I suppose some might have a problem with that, but I doubt there were many in the audience who weren t already well aware of Mr. Cooder s political views. Thanks, I m sure, to the very receptive audience, Ry and his band and the Hamiltones all clearly enjoyed themselves, ending the evening by coming back for two encores. And the audience (including me) still was wanting more! Alas, it was not to be. Guess we ll all just have to see them again next time around \u2014 hopefully very soon.

This concert by one of my all time favorite artists should have been awesome. Had a great view from the 7th row left aisle seats. The Hamiltones vocal harmonies were beautiful and the playlist included some of my favorite tunes from Paradise and Lunch. Regrettably, the quality of the audio presentation nearly ruined the experience. Throughout the concert, the volume of the bass player was so loud that the rest of the band was overwhelmed and almost completely muddled. My experience has been that usually these situations are not uncommon when a concert first begins, but somebody running a sound mixing board will make adjustments or have the musicians adjust their individual volumes. Not this night. I hope they resolve this issue for the rest of the tour. 4 stars for the view, but 1 star for sound quality.

I've been to several Ry Cooder shows--including Little Village and the Buena Vista Social Club--but this one may be tops, just for the fact that he mixed songs from his current release with some of the best material from his past. Thanks to the Hamiltones, who have taken the place of Bobby King, Terry Evans, et al., Ry did 3 songs from Bop Till You Drop that duplicated the R&B grooves of that record. And his droll patter between songs kept everyone smiling. Of particular note was a story involving Johnny Cash, David Lindley, and chow mein. Won't spoil it for those who have tickets for future shows on this tour; I can only hope it's a regular feature of those performances. What a national treasure!

Ry did not disappoint. The show was a little rough around the edges but since it was the first tour date that was not necessarily bad, it just added to the overall ambience. The Birchmere is a small listening club and the audience was all about listening to Ry do whatever he wanted to do. He performed a nice mix of new and old, had some stories to tell and was thoroughly enjoyable.
First off, I am not a huge country fan but I have always liked Ry Cooder's many mediums that he has dabbled in, so he was the draw. But I really loved the selection of old timey tunes for the set list. All were great musicians. Ricky's voice was in fine form. And Ry was awesome. They were very interactive with the audience, which always enriches a show.
Mac Mcanally's ease on stage, and storytelling between songs made the evening feel more like hanging out with friends than being in a room full of strangers. He was my reason for purchasing tickets to this show, and I could have left when his set was over and been happy. BUT who in their right mind passes up an opportunity to see the the likes of Skaggs,White, & Cooder?? Their performance was top of the line. Overall, a great evening.
First of all, there is not a finer, more intimate venue on earth for music. Secondly, this show was absolutely amazing. Ricky Skaggs and the Whites never disappoint and when you toss Ry Cooder into the mix, well it was off the charts, crazy good. Oh, did I mention that Mac Macanally opened the show? Oh yeah, Mac lit the stage up with his down home brand of humor and treated us to a collection of the hit songs he has written.
Though they've performed many times, it looked like they were genuinely having a great time! It's as if you're watching some very talented friends play their instruments, sing, sprinkle in a few stories and simply enjoy the moment producing great, moving music. It was a fun evening.
To say I'm a fan of Ry Cooder falls WAAAAAY short of the mark. Words like "disciple" and "minion" are probably more accurate. Seeing Ry live has been at the top of my bucket list for as long as I've had a bucket list, and last night I was able to cross it off. I went with a little tredidation- my experience with seeing my idols is spotty at best. As often as not, you realize the magic isn't as much in the performer's talent as in the wizardry of a modern studio. There's nothing worse than having an idol fall from the pedestal I had placed them on, and having Cooder not meet my extremely high expectations would have been heartbreaking. Luckily, I was not disappointed. It doesn't hurt to have such a massively talented group of musicians to play with- Ricky Skaggs, sang, played mandolin, guitar, and fiddle with equal eloquence; the voices of sisters Cheryl and Sharon White resplendent, Papa Buck White, at 85 years old simply ROCKED the piano- or should I say he tickled the keys until they peed their pants; Mark Fain, drawn from Skagg's band "Kentucky Thunder" was an absolute tub-thumpin' fool, and Ry's son Joachim was sheer granite on the skins. But it was the amazing Mr. Cooder that ruled the show- and who most folks obviously came to hear. His mastery of just about anythings with strings was well evident, best demostrated by his beautiful rendition of "Tennessee Waltz". What was a bit of a surprise might have been his beautiful baritone voice. While he's not known for the superlative nature of his voice from his solo recordings (he does a fine job, but he's no Vince Gill), Cooder held down the bottom end for the nights harmonies. The "Songs for the Good People" were a joy, drawn in large part from the Americana Gospel songbook, including a number of selections from Bill Monroe, Flatts & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers. This is the kind of music that could make an avowed atheist reconsider their convictions. Ry's storytelling was a major highlight of the show, as well. His tale of finding himself holding down banjo duties as a teenager behind Doc Watson and Bill Monroe was worth the price of admission. In the same manner he uses exquisite timing in his musical embellishments, the manner he tells a tale is a study in old-timey yarn-spinning. The takeaway was that even with his band snowed in and not able to join him in a tour of California, the young Cooder ready and willing to step up to the plate, Mr. Monroe didn't need a banjo picker THAT bad. In Ry's words, you can do worse than not making the cut when auditioning for the Father of Bluegrass. I've seen just about everyone I ever dreamed of in concert, and even more I'd just has soon I'd missed. Cooder, Skaggs, and The White's "Songs for the Good People" left me wanting to get back in line just to see it again. We can only hope they'll release a live album of the tour, as these folks and their music are national treasures.
I saw Ry Cooder back in 1981 when he came out with "Bop Til You Drop" and I had torn feelings about attending this show since I knew it wasn't going to be just a Ry Cooder show. And the things I read hinted there wouldn't be many Ry tunes played. But I went any way because I knew Ry is getting older (as we all are?) and thought I might not get a chance again to see him ever again. Well uhh....the show at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall this past March 31, 2016 just blew me away. Ry, Ricky, Sharon, Joachim Cooder on drums (Ry's son) Mark Fain and the remaining Whites performed many traditional Americana and gospel tunes with four part harmonies that just were chilling. Classic songs from the Louvin Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, the Delmore Brothers and many others. Please....I almost passed on this show. Don't make that mistake. This tour is not one to miss. And at most venues you get to meet with and talk to Ry, Ricky and Sharon after the show. It was such an honor and pure bonus pleasure to meet someone so warm like Ry Cooder. He is truly an American Music Hero indeed. (and let's not forget Ricky and Sharon either)
This was a show not typical for a lot of audiences, which was reflected by the small turnout (it also was competing with a Royals home game on a nice evening, though). Ry Cooder called this the "legacy express" (and promised to eat a bug if it wasn't). No need for the bug. It was also a musicianship express. This was true "roots" music, touching on gospel, country, blues, bluegrass, and a little of everything. Ry Cooder and Ricky Skaggs are Institution-Grade musicians --- I still sit in awe of the picking and sliding and such. Sharon White sings like an angel (so does her sister), and her daddy, Buck White, is magic on the piano. Old hymns and obscure early country tunes are not everybody's cup of cider, but it was the kind of show you like, if you like that kind of show. *grin*
Ry hit all the right notes, musically and politically. The band was in the groove. The staff at the Uptown Theatre went out of their way to accommodate our group's special needs. Truly, a fantastic evening.
Great show. Ry is a superstar that plays well with others. His band is fantastic and he takes the opportunity to showcase them. There's some old guy gravel in his voice but he hits all the notes and plays his guitar as well as ever. Did a lot of old oldies with a fresh take. A show well worth seeing.

You don't hear music this rootsy and soulful enough anymore. Ry's guitar playing was restrained and tasteful. I'd have liked to see him stretch out a bit more. He had a relatively small combo (including an awesome bass saxophonist) with lots of space between the instruments. Just great stuff, and Emmylou Harris was as good as I've seen her. Highly recommended.

Great show! Ry in fine voice. Arlo Guthrie, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash covers to name a few. Blues, old-timey, ballads, protest, spirituals - great song choices. Excellent band and when is the last time you saw a bass sax? Good backup vocals - Hamiltones(?) If Cooder comes back do not miss it.

Ry Cooder proved again that he is a master guitar player and his band was just great. Joachim Cooder opened the show and played really create and ethereal music. I thoroughly enjoyed this evening.

Smooth movement from vocals and instruments through a variety of themed songs, ballads and protests. Has as mature take on his previous wanderings that has aged like a fine wine. I enjoyed it very much, it certainly could have been longer. Unfortunately the venue was hot and stuffy with no air circulation. Many sweaty complaining people.

Fabulous Ry Cooder & ensemble concert. Cooder is better than ever, no mean feat at his age. The Hamiltones were an unexpected treat, we're fans now. The Neptune crew was so helpful. My wife is in a wheelchair and they went out of their way to move us to a better location. Great folks.

Wonderful to see Ry again and Joaquim too - and the back-up singers were great!! I liked that he went back to more of his old stuff and wasn't with Ricky Skaggs again. Didn't like that concert. Ry is one of my favorite musicians ever. I'd LOVE to see/hear him play with Taj Mahal again - great old days there!!

I love Ry Cooder as he has soul, feeling, whatever. He sings gospel but not with the self righteous attitude I associate with the christian right. In fact he sings about the money grubbing christians.

EmmyLou & her band were low-key & rockin', heart-felt & sometimes political, but overall a moving, interesting show covering her own music, artists like Lucinda Williams & Dion's "Abraham, Martin & John". One of best moments was band's acapella tune. Ry Cooder & his band alternated solos, acoustic & bluesy numbers, heavy on alto sax (and a jazzy undertone). Many of Cooder's tunes were faith-driven. Venue was spectacular, especially on such a stormy, sloppy evening! Mann's staff exceptional from parking lot to the amphitheatre. EmmyLou & Cooder provided a peaceful, musical evening.

ProdigalSonnet
Ry Cooder brought his most recent release "The Prodigal Son" to a temporarily submarine Mann Music Center on July 3rd and if you weren't there, you truly missed out. Accompanied by the very talented Hamiltones, Cooder took the audience on a primal journey through songs, new and old, that told an unflinching tale about American desperation and the diminishing prospects of the American dream. The music was simple and direct, unforced and laid back. New songs and new arrangements of old songs that married the Gospel -inspired vocals of the Hamiltones with the earthy Blues and slide guitar of Cooder into a melange that was at once exotic and hauntingly familiar. Also, there was a bass saxophone. If you have the opportunity to attend a concert on this tour, you owe it to yourself to do just that.

Just getting the chance to see him these days is remarkable.. Sound quality was so much better than his co-bill so I think there was real attention to detail there. And then there is the fact that he is an American original with no one else out there like him.

WHat an amazing artist and amazing performance. Ry Cooder was / is / has been / continues to be THE master of slide guitar. His band was having fun, full of energy and talent. The Hamiltones were perfect. Yet another talented group of musicians that Mr. Cooder has placed in front of us. The evening ROCKED despite the heat and humidity.

Ry Cooder's concert showcased his latest album, Prodigal Son. I love the new album and was right at home with his setlist; however if you were not familiar with it, you might not have enjoyed the show quite as much as my husband and I did. Emmylou Harris opened and she and her band were excellent! (Too say she opened is a little unfair as she is a headliner and music legend in her own right.) Anyway, Ry's singing and guitar playing were excellent and he was backed up by the Hamiltones who are fantastic for the harmonies! His band included his son, Joachim on drums and all excelled. Ry encored with Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm" and a rousing version of "Little Sister." I was sorry he omitted his new song, "Shrinking Man," which is a metaphor for getting older. A great show at the Mann Music Center on Tuesday night!

Ry Cooder with his band and the amazing gospel-tinted Hamiltonians, all put together forms one of the all time great experiences: amazing harmonies, and the stellar guitar, mando-playing genius of Cooder's arrangements and playing: always just enough notes; always the right amount of notes. See why Rolling Stone has placed Cooder in the top 100 Guitar Players in music.

Since the early seventies the guitar stylings of Ry have been a joy. Finding his skill on other artists work. His consistently delightful extensive solo works. And one of the most moving things I have ever heard, bringing together the Bonivista Social Club. Working with musicians like Taj Mahall Randy Newman. And the instrumental movie soundtracks. And there was Ry on stage, appearing comfortable, casually dressed with a beautiful tie. All his guitars within reach and the master sings and plays tunes familiar and from his new LP. His son Joachim opened the show playing an not sure what that was but was entertained. Backing musicians were all excellent. Ry Cooder s music/musinship and extroidanary skill with the guitar is one of my most treasured experiences. And on my great hi-fi I will continue to play his LP/CD s. JB

Pretty disappointing to see one of the major talents of the age put on a ho hum whatever goes show starring (mostly) everbody but the name preformer. Lot of people, lot of waiting around, lot of noise, not much memorable music, harsh sound mix - won't do it again

Was not that familiar with Ty Cooder's work but I really liked his performance. Great voice and guitar work. Backup group "The Hamiltones" were excellent. Backup band was tight.
