Intimate, good sound engineering, nice food, good coffee. Karin, Linford and guitar, mandolin, harmonica player. Good selection of songs, not all holiday, Chrsistmas songs. Karin's. irthday. Had seen them outside at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park in SanFrancisco, but this was a different, quieter show on a nice cold autumn night.

My wife and I REALLY enjoyed this group. We are new to their following, but being a musician myself, I could really respect their vocal as well as their instrument chops. The duo in front of them were outstanding also. Very well written songs. I can't believe their ages. Yikes! We hope to be there at the barn raising. Sounds like a real good time.

The Over the Rhine concert on Friday night at Coney Island was proof of the group's appeal to all ages. Young and Old sang, swayed, clapped, and cat-whistled in appreciation of a wide range of songs. Besides being exceptionally talented, whether they are playing piano, guitar, or singing, Karin and Linford make the crowd feel personally involved in the performance. People around us were asking why this group isn't more well-known nationally. Thanks for a great evening!

A great show at a great venue. Over the Rhine amazed me yet again. They seemed to be in a great mood and happy to be back in Cincinnati and it showed in their music. I love Kim Taylor too, so her guest appearance made the show even better.

I bought these tickets for my girlfriend as a present. I am a rock head but I really enjoyed the intimate feel and mellow mood. They were great musicians and she has a very soulful voice. Moonlight gardens is a great place to see a band like this but they need to ensure more seating. We had to sit on the steps but it was still a very good place to watch the show.

Over the Rhine has once again provided their wildly diverse audience with another night if fabulous music. Moonlight Gardens and Cincinnati in general are strong venues for OTR. Each event is a warm homecoming. This concert was more melancholy than most, but given the date, September 11, it was an understandable choice for the band. Their playlist comprised of selections from their last 3 albums.

The venue, for starters, was amazing. It was very intimate and quaint, but had a nice ambiance. Drinks were kind of expensive, but I find that everywhere these days. The interaction with the crowd was awesome. I really appreciated their sharing of their lives, if only a little. My biggest complaint would be that the show started about 40 minutes late, and since there was another show on afterwards, they had to stop playing.

The Over the Rhine concert the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill was amazing! The venue was just the right size, small and intimate and it really highlighted the band's unbelievable talent. OtR played a great mix of their old and new songs and connected really well with the audience. I would most definitely recommend this show to friends.

Linford, Karen and the gang really just get better all the time. This show was a little different than the others I've been to-they were a little more laid back and relaxed, played a more mellow set and really added a lot of newness to what they played. The Bluebird was perfect for this. I've been an OtR fan for years and go see them every chance I get! I would definitely come see them at The Bluebird again.

Great show. So many songs so little time (missed some of our favorites). Light hearted, sassy and stylish. They put class in the Blues. All solos were excellent. New album was covered to our delight. Only problem - too hot and cramped in the Duc k Room.

Although the duck room became a bit stifling as the evening wore on, the show was well worth it. Over the Rhine didn't just play their songs, they re-crafted songs and made them into showpieces. Linford's songwriting and Karen's singing have both developed by leaps and bounds since I heard them 5 or 6 years ago. I think the greatest recommendation is that two friends who'd never heard them before thoroughly enjoyed the show and want to pick up more of their music.

The concert for OTR at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, OH was the best concert I have ever attended. The band was amazing, as always, but with the addition of Kenny Hudson and Kim Taylor this was a truly magical night. OTR shines on a normal night, but this was a brilliant performance. Karin and Linford were their normal whimsical themselves, but without a new album to praise they played songs from 15 years ago--awesome. They have so many great songs and they played them all. I cannot say enough, I have seen them 10 times in the past, yet this was my favorite performance hands down!!!!!

Pop music doesn't get more beautiful or transcendant.... Karin was feeling especially energized and she put out a top performance. The sound was great and the venue beautiful and comfortable. And when December comes, the Kent Stage, a comfortable indoor venue with great sound, will be another ideal spot to see them.

I have seen this group at least six different times and I'm always impressed by the quality of their shows. You never leave one of their concerts wondering who played the musical instruments on their CD's because they leave no doubt that they did it themselves. Their sound crew always provides an excellent balance and never allows any one member of the band to overpower the others. It's never too hard to hear or to loud for the venue. They truely appreciate their fans. They play long and I have seen them mingle with the crowd after some shows. I've seen plenty of bigger-name bands that I had to see because I love their music, but was highly disappointed by their inability to play their own music and have no desire to see them play live again. Over the Rhine however, will see me at their shows every chance I get.

I've seen Over the Rhine half a dozen times, my wife at least twice that - and we have never been disappointed -- always an excellent performance. In additional to their singing/songwriting, they always have great musicians. The Taft in Cincinnati for their Christmas show is probably the best place to see them (they go all out), but the Lincoln is excellent. Not a bad seat in the house; very small venue. Bought the new double CD, it was worth the purchase. Also, enjoyed Mike the Electrician, who opened for them.

OTR was on their game last night! It was a great show at a great venue. Vienna Tang (and Ed Wong?) opened for them. I was unfamiliar with their music, but impressed enough that I will be purchasing at least one album. They played a long set, almost 1:30, much longer than I had anticipated. I enjoyed it all, though I found the mixing to have resulted in some muddier vocals than I would have liked (had a hard time making out some of the lyrics as a result). OTR was all good. They also played for about 1:30, if I remember correctly. Sadly, this resulted in a number of people leaving early (it was a Tuesday night, after all). The pews in the Synagogue were not super comfortable, so by the end of the show, my body was ready to leave. Only downside: obnoxious references from Karen love for the man in the White House. Please, did we come for that? No. Do I care that you are a big fan of his? No. Do you have any special ability to comment on matters of public policy? No. Does she not know that people on both sides of the aisle might like her music? Apparently not. Clearly it bothered me, and my good friend that went with me, who is about as liberal as they come, didn't really get anything positive out of the comment. So why mention?

I have been following Over the Rhine for years, having seen them in concert about a dozen times. It seems that each time they come to Columbus, they are traveling with one less band member, and now are down to simply adding one more to their stage show. However, the guy that they have with them is unbelievable. Brad Meinerding not only plays mandolin, guitar and harmonica with some of the best mastery I've ever seen live, but he also sings background vocals and brings more depth to a few songs with harmonization. He definitely added a richness to the show that put it over the top as far as a wonderful experience. My one gripe about the evening was the lack of an opening act. Over the years we have become fans of their opening acts as well, artists we weren't otherwise exposed to (Griffin House, Lily & Madeline, etc.). We were sad to not walk away with a new band to keep up with. They played mostly songs from their last two albums, one of which was a Christmas album. It was also nice to hear some old favorites as well. As far as the on-stage banter, I wish we could have heard more of the stories behind the songs. Over the Rhine is not a band that writes bubblegum-pop lyrics that are easy to interpret, so hearing the back-story adds a lot to my appreciation of where a song is coming from. In all, we had a great time and walked away with a new live album that they recorded down in Cincinnati that features Brad Meinerding, which will be nice to revive memories of this concert throughout the year until we meet again at the Lincoln next December.

This was s fantastic show. My Father's Body resonated with my soul. Karin and Linford are true professionals. They have such a passion for what they do. The audience can't help but to get swept up in the music. The one thing I want to caution, since I have been a long time fan is to be careful with the addition of the electric/ steel guitars and drums. They had a tendancy at times to overpower the pure quality of Karin's voice. Could have been that our seats were floor seats under the balcony and the sound could have created a tunnel effect. I still was blown away but just wanted to express that fear. What a great Christmas treat.

Karen in bangs and straight hair, performing in a sort of thigh length chiffon thing that looked straight out of a 60s New Year's Eve, woo. More importantly she was in fine voice, although the backups were more electric than OTR's more acoustic show earlier in the fall in Ann Arbor. Some lyrics suffered from the instrumental backup. The songs from the new album are getting better interpretations as they perform them live. The multitalented steel guitar/dobro guy was a great addition, even if he is basically gilding a lily. The music OTR writes and plays defies categories, and they're better live than on recordings. I'm relatively late to their bandwagon, but their shows are wonderful and Karen Berquist is still an American musical treasure.

This is the third time I've seen them. Last time they performed as a duo, but this time they brought a full band again and it was fabulous. They had a steel guitarist who proved that this instrument need not be limited to country & western music. The songs were great, of course, mostly from their most recent two CDs. As usual they did a lot of patter between tunes, but it works because it gives you some insight into the origin of the songs and the band's own origins, not to mention getting you into the right mood. Looking forward to seeing them again!

Here's the thing... Between his piano playing and her incredible vocals, it's always a great night with this band. We look forward to seeing them whenever they are within driving distance. Unfortunately, there was something "off" at this show. The sound was not right and the bass totally overpowered everything else. The timing seemed a little off too and the band didn't feel cohesive at any point in the show. I'm glad we went and love the quirky little somerville theatre. It just wasn't as good as it usually is

I have seen Over the Rhine perform live two times prior to this concert. The last time I attended one of their concerts was at the Hopkins Performing Arts Center in April of 2010. Both concerts I attended previously were absolutely wonderful. Therefore, I was really looking forward to seeing them perform again. Unfortunately, I walked out of this concert feeling extremely disappointed. I realize the band were promoting their new album, but they only performed one song from their back catalog which left you wanting to hear more. Linford also spent a signficant amount of time telling stories, which was boring and completely unnecessary. You could tell Karin just wanted to get on with it. The songs on the new album also sounded the same. There was nothing distinctive. Finally, I wish they would perform somewhere other than this venue, which is a dump. Not only is this venue a dump, there is never enough seating for everyone. People are always left standing. The tickets indicate "General Seating," which would indicate everyone will have a seat to sit in. However, that is never the case with this venue.

This was OTR without the full band. Either flavor is great, but in the smaller venue with the better acoustics this show was awesome. The opener Ben Sollee did a great job and fit very well with the vibe of the night which was a low key sort of storytellers. Both him and OTR shared a bit about each song before they played them. They played some new stuff from their album which is due out sometime this year. Can't wait for them to come back through!

I really enjoyed Over The Rhine. This was my second chance to see them. The opening act, Ben Sollee was a surpise treat. I though he played wonderfully. I was ready to drive to Kent to see Over the Rhine Satuday night until I remembered I had other plans!

Been going to OTR shows now for 4-5 years. Quite simply, the best there is. Nobody does music quite like them- and I mean MUSIC, not trash/junk/BS/whatever, but heartfelt music, you will find no equal--- open up your ears, open up your mind, & let These kids called OTR take you for a bit- You won't regret it- Let your heart go and enjoy the ride! Linford & Karin- your last (12/14/12) show was one of the best- Loved the bass player-supreme............... -Matt

a faithful follower of OTR for 2 decades and the music just ages like fine wine. Over time they have become so cohesive and so adept at their music. I have seen then at outdoor concerts in small and large venues....My husbad who died of breast cancer in 2000 pased into Creators hand while listing with his soul going home. It is now passed to me to share our yearly Christmas gift of their concerts. Columbus was a prime example. They were chatty and serious ,playful and introspective. Sandy Hook happened the night before and the dedication to it was so very moving. Linford and Karin , you are sooooo loved

The entire show was fantastic - from start to finish. Cincinnati has been our home for nearly 23 years (about as long as OTR has been in existence!). I have been wanting to attend their holiday concert ever since it became an annual tradition, but somehow it never worked out. We made it a point to attend this year's concert - the weekend before we move to CA . We have LOVED living in Cincinnati - have raised our children here - it's been a perfect place to live, and we call it "home". So we found this year's concert particularly poignant and moving. I plan to buy many of the songs that were sung at the concert on iTunes to remind me of our "home" in the Ohio River Valley, as we start our new life on the west coast.

There is no musical power like the creative magic created by Karin and Linford of Over the Rhine. And their raw, emotional talent is never more evident when it's just the two of them. This was, hands down, THE best concert performance EVER, ANYWHERE. I laughed, I cried, I rocked, rolled, hollered and then begged for more...and of course, they gave it. Extraordinary talent, bringing awareness of life's full richness, both the joyful and the tragic, into gorgeously crafted songs, and delivered with exquisite keyboard and guitar accompanying Karin's deeply soulful voice and harmonies that will make you swoon. Simply transcendent.

I also saw them earlier this year at the Birchmere. A fantastic band with an inexhaustible repertoire. I hope some day I'll hear them do "The World Can Wait" live.

OTR continues to become this excellent band that is ecletic and entertaining. Their diverse styles of music demonstrates how talented and creative the individuals are that make up the band. At this show it seemed like they cut back on the guitar solos which left me wanting more but I write this from the point of view as a guitarist myself. I wish they had Mickey back as their drummer because he was so entertaining to watch and added so much personality to the band especially with his breath taking solos and antics on the stage. The addition of the lap steel/ harmonica player is great. OTR is an excellent blues band and wish they would do more material from the blues genre. OTR is one of my favorite all time bands and I have not missed one of their local shows for the last twelve years.

great music as always. had some difficulty hearing some of the lyrics. I felt the back up band overwhelmed Karen's vocals too often. When they went down to two or three pieces (piano, guitar, bass) the effect was magical. I know it's probably overdone but, I was really hoping for "Ohio" as part of the encore set. I hope OTR has more chances to play Cincy in the future!

Amy Wainright Roach (sp?) is the perfect warmup, I was delighted how well she related to the audience. Over the Rhine were great. Waiting for them between acts strained my patience, maybe because I was hungary.

Not only was the music so great but both OTR and Joe Henry did a great job of connecting with the audience through stories and introductions. It was so much fun and a great way to spend my birthday!

I am not one to write reviews but heck, why not... This was the first evening my wife and I were able to share alone since our 6 week old blessed our lives. This OTR show was a welcomed pilgrimage to musical nirvana. We have gone to every Christmas show since our first show together (Films for Radio CD release party) and this most recent show did not disappoint. K's voice was beautiful and L's playing devine. The band has serious chops too. If you have never been; you should consider a future show this winter/spring. There is nothing like it. Have a blessed Christmas and Holiday all. B.

I have followed the group for 20+ years but am giving up on concerts at the Taft, and possibly all concerts, concentrating only on buying the CDs. The reason is that while the lyrics are the band's strongest point, Karen Bergquist is simply too inarticulate of a singer to be understood. Unless you know the words of the song, or unless she is singing with a partner on a duet, it is impossible to understand the lyrics, Yes, she has a wonderful voice, but unless she can at this late date learn how to clearly articulate the lyrics, there is no point in hearing them live. The recording studios that cut the albums can compensate for her failing in that area.

Utterly amazing as always. OTR puts on a lyrical and musical masterpiece w/ songs that reach into your heart and soul and draw on memories and experiences you've had or can imagine having. They meld everything together seamlessly into a performance that's unforgettable. They will take you on a journey of their own making and make you feel it's yours.

I love Over the Rhine. But I'm not a huge fan of the new album. I don't expect them to only produce albums I enjoy. So I wished they would have played more of their older songs. Especially since their new album is not out yet. There didn't seem to be much excitement for the night as well.

Not sure if this makes sense but, Over the Rhine is always so much better live. I have most of their albums, but nothing beats the Christmas concert at the Taft Theatre. Maybe it is the old theatre. Something is different about listening to them live vs. the CD's. And I don't mean the obvious thing like the atmosphere at a live show. They just simply sound better live than on any radio or iPod.

A friend burned a compilation disc of OtR music for me a couple of years ago. I had never heard of them before that. LOVED every song. So when I saw they were coming to Columbus I got 6 tickets. 3 people in the group had never heard of them and had never heard their music. Trusting friends I have, eh?!?! They asked me what kind of music to expect. Because OtR IS so unique, the best description I could come up with was "Adult Alternative" but that doesn't do them justice. And - everyone loved the show!

I remember in the 90's when OtR were trying a little too hard to be the smart hipster band. There were all sorts of comparisons, especially in my hometown of Cincinnati. Now they've ascended the fog of pop assimilation into something wholly their own. The first time I saw Over The Rhine was in 1993. The were louder, a bit overblown, I didn't quite get what they were trying to do. 17 years later, at the beautiful Lincoln Theatre in Columbus Ohio, they were fully formed like a monarch butterfly at its pinnacle. Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler along with their backing band gave an inspired performance. Bergquist's magical voice has become smokier, softer and altogether more powerful.

We thoroughly enjoyed this concert. Karen's voice is spectacular and has such a variety of sounds. The instrumental accompaniment was amazing...clearly talented musicians in this band. Singer songwriters performing their own music are always the best. Linford has a wonderful voice, too, as well being a talented songwriter and musician. The Lincoln Theater is beautiful...what a gem for Columbus.
