I only went because a friend was a crew member and said He would show me around. Wow! This production was amazing-from the costumes, sound, dancing, choreography to the actual singing! Laura Michelle has a wonderful voice which came across loud and clear in this theater. The Deborah Kerr and Yul Brenner version is bland and "meh" compared to this treat for the eyes and ears. And there are songs that never made it to the film version . I highly recommend this show, I have seen many shows in my life, but this is a standout!

Really enjoyed the show. Good balcony seats, better view than Mezzanine lower floor as it is a large cast. Sound and audio not so great. We had trouble hearing some of the performers, We had a lovely dinner at Off Vine Restaurant and they valet parked our car for entire evening for $10.

Growing up in the NY city area seeing broadway shows very often, I am a snob when it comes to theatre. Expecting an "O.K." Los Angeles performance, I was pleasantly shocked at the quality of the King and I. The singing and dancing were on par to any production on the broadway stage. A must see for musical lovers.

I have been wanting to go to this ever since they started advertising. I grew up on musicals and this was one of my favorites. I have the original sound track 33 that I played over and over and know all the lyrics. I was so afraid that this would be a disappointment. But it wasn't The sets were fantastic, the cast wonderful. I would never have expected more on Broadway. I feel like I was there. We have been to quite a few shows at the Pantages, but this was by far, the best and most professional one we have seen. DON'T MISS IT.

The production and cast of the King and I are fabulous. Unfortunately the Pantages sound system leaves something to be desired, at least from my front orchestra seats. It doesn't do justice to the wonderful singers. The voices were often a bit screechy and not as clear as they could have been. I attended the production at Lincoln Center and the sound quality was better.

I was amazed at the quality of this production and how fresh the performers made the musical. The vitality was in strong presence the entire show. However, I still felt the movie had a stronger emotioinal pull than that provided in the live production. Maybe, the closeuips provided by the movie added emotional pathoes especially with the death of the king.

The Lincoln Center Theater Production of Rodgers & Hammerstein s classic The King and I claimed the Pantages Theater as a temporary kingdom on Tuesday evening and truly, it is ‘Something Wonderful. !! The musical, which I believe hasn t been staged in Los Angeles on this grand a scale in over a decade (Pantages Theater, April 2005), brings the story of an English schoolteacher in a faraway land to life in a sweeping production that is passionately endearing, thoroughly enjoyable and definitively entertaining. Moreover, the distinct effort to make this show both relevant and enduring despite its ‘political incorrectness (by today s standards) is absolutely amazing to watch as it unfolds on stage. Therein in lies my sincere appreciation for Bartlett Sher, the director of this revival. The Tony winner for Best Director (South Pacific, 2008) delicately and deftly balances themes like polygamy, colonial-mentality, chauvinism, anti-feminism, against hooped skirts, leather shoes, a whip, a bible, a sailing vessel and a magnificent Buddha set piece; he juxtaposes the grandness of a banquet hall against the lone soliloquies of a puzzled monarch; he intertwines forbidden love amongst themes of patriotism, feminism, honor and even slavery. It s a lot to take in but thankfully, it comes with some of the most engaging and memorable music written for the stage AS WELL AS some of the most terrific performances from a stellar company …a rather large company at that. Let s start with the music, a wonderful pastiche of melodies including Getting to Know You , Something Wonderful , I Have Dreamed and Shall We Dance? , all moving the plot (and subplots) along. At one point, I thought I saw the words themselves dancing from the schoolteacher s lips, tripping steadily on the beat, the half beat, or punctuating a counterpoint here and there. Some songs stick with you even after a show, and some of these songs have stuck with me until now, as I pen this. But, let s face it….it s the characters who sing these songs that are wonderful, and in this production, there happens to be some superb musicality on display from some very capable artists. Anna Leonowens is played by the dazzling Laura Michelle Kelly. Don t let that small frame fool you….she is astoundingly magnificent, able to effortlessly transition from dialogue to song in a snap and with such a pristine voice, I didn t want her to stop! From her opening I Whistle A Happy Tune through Hello Young Lovers and the glorious Shall We Dance? , Ms. Kelly delivers a convincing portrait of an eager schoolteacher waiting to drag a stuffy king into modern times and the challenges that come with that. The underscored love story, between the Burmese Lun Tha and Tuptim, is brought to life by Kavin Panmeechao and Manna Nichols, respectively. Both actors give heartfelt and believable performances, but Wow!, where in the world did Manna Nichols come from!? The musical theater veteran shines as Tuptim with a voice as spectacular as her spellbinding look. In Tuptim s story, you find a piece of the heart of this musical determination, compassion, overcoming adversity and friendship. Then there is Lady Thiang (the first wife), dynamically and poignantly portrayed by Joan Almedilla (is there NOTHING this woman can t do!?). To her role belongs perhaps THE singular song of the entire musical, Something Wonderful , an homage to the king himself an open request for Anna to accept the king on his own terms, with his dreams, his faults, his aspirations, etc.: This is a man who thinks with his heart, His heart is not always wise. This is a man who stumbles and falls, But this is a man who tries. This is a man you'll forgive and forgive And help and protect, as long as you live. And when sung by Joan, it s absolutely breathtaking! So convincing is her portrayal of Lady Thiang, I almost bowed to her when I met her backstage. Thiang is the embodiment of courage and strength, wise in her own wisdom, un-wavering in her devotion to her land, her kingdom and her king. And Joan splendidly brings her to life! In 1976, I saw The King and I at the Dorothy Chandler with Yul Brynner in the title role. It was only because I auditioned to be one of the children that the only song I knew (had to learn) was Getting to Know You ; I hadn t heard the other tunes nor could my folks find the recording of the soundtrack but I do remember that I had fun watching this show, primarily because of Yul s performance as the king. So, the musical really does belong to the actor playing this role….and Jose Llana fills the king s shoes tremendously. I think Sher gifted Jose with this sandbox of music and dialogue and it was just so entertaining to watch Jose play. Both in singing and dancing, but moreso in some hysterically funny dialogue (generally accompanied by equally hysterical rolling eyes, upturned grin and nodding head), Jose IS the King…an innocent, determined, brave, puzzled king who is trying to hold on to the customs and traditions of what he was taught while trying to accept the new world knowledge he is asking of Anna. That clash is the engine of the show and Jose is absolutely brilliant at conveying frustration, anger, humor, and indeed, hope. It s such a robust, heartwarming and compassionate role and Jose spiritedly succeeds as Yul s triumphant successor.

I have seen many reincarnations of this musical in my life. This is the best. The two leads bring a depth to their characters that is unsurpassed. Anna and the king are presented as very real people (They are, historically.) with conflicting emotions and thoughts. The issues of women's rights, foreign relationships, respect for scientific truth, which are so current today, were prominently depicted, and made the play so very relevant. The "Uncle Tom's Cabin" play within a play was superb. All of the other main characters delivered stellar performances. The only disappointment was the crown prince who was stiff and didn't capture the role. Even his attempted accent sounded more British than Thai. When the young man who played Anna's son outstrips Chulalongkorn in the "It's a Puzzlement" song, something is wrong with the casting for that role. Other than that, it is an amazing revival that is enjoyable on many levels.

Overall I LOVED the performance! Everything from the music to dancing was perfect! My only compliant was that people were still coming in and making a lot of noise during the first song. Every other show I go to they close the doors once it starts and let people back in after the first song, it s like theater policy. We went to this show for my birthday and we always make sure to arrive early so we don t miss anything and to make sure we don t interrupt others experiencing the show as well. Like I said overall it was great, but was disappointed in how the Fox staff handled all of the late guests.

I brought my mother to see this musical after her having to wait 41 years to see it. She had tickets for the original production in New York in 1975/6? with Yul Brenner. The tickets were stolen and she did not get to see the musical. So forty some years later she finally got to see the production. She enjoyed it and even our "cheap" seats on the floor were great.

This is one of my favorite musicals and I was thrilled to see it live. Unfortunately, I forgot how difficult visibility at the Fox Theatre is. It's a gorgeous building, but seats are not stadium or even staggered. It means that if you're seated behind a tall person, you'll spend the show constantly turning your head to try and see anything. It was frustrating to my family and the people seated around us (particularly as we'd paid for center main floor). The musical's costumes and cast were fantastic, but I'll think twice about going back to the Fox unless I can afford first row seating there.

I always hate to say something negative about a live performance, but the performance we attended was not outstanding. We left after the "Shall We Dance" number. This is the first time I had ever seen the King and I, and my family and I enjoyed it. The production itself was excellent, and the talent was excellent. But ... I don't think it is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best. The music itself was ok. Excellently performed (band was amazing), but the tunes and lyrics were somehow lacking. There were exceptions to be sure, but that was the overall feel. Still, glad I saw it and would recommend it.

What a truly remarkable experience and I would go see again. One hiccup was the family that brought their child. The kid would not sit still and it was very disturbing. Please don t bring children to the this performance since it is not child friendly. I have 2 children. Otherwise the performance had so many magical moments and they brought humor to the stage which was quite refreshing. I have been going to a lot of performances ever since I was 10. I was disappointed in the production. The music seemed shallow (not a full orchestra?), the sets were boring and the show just moved way too slow for me. We had a hard time understanding the words, not sure if it was the accents or the sound system. The production itself was a very good performance; reminiscent of the ones my cousin used to drag me to as a youngster many years ago. The downside is that the production was severely hampered by the ancient acoustics of the venerable Centennial Hall; long overdue for a much-needed update to the 21st. century. The actors were great, the music was great, the dialogue was mumbled by the severe lack of proper sound transmission (acoustics). Hopefully the Book of Mormon will be better.

An eye-popping, gorgeous production, beautifully acted and sung. The Uncle Tom's Cabin sequence is unforgettable. This nearly 70 year old show retains it's lighthearted optimism coupled with the dramatic tension and tragedy in Act 2 to a satifying conclusion. The 2 leads were nothing short of marvelous. Highly recommended, especially for folks familiar with the show and/or movie or anyone who wants to see what made mid-century American Musical Theater the marvel that it was.....and remains with productions like this.

I vastly enjoyed the show, I thought the actors performed admirably. Set changes were very interesting. I rated venue middle of range, as I feel that the acoustics in there are not the best. However, that did not deter the actors from performing a very entertaining show.

I had always wanted to see a live production of this wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, and can honestly say I was not disappointed. Even though there was the occasional problem with a line or two being missed because of the sound system (something that can happen in live theatre), this problem had no baring on the level of enjoyment I (along with the others in attendance) were experiencing. There were many highlights to the performance, the most notable being the audience clapping along to the music, as Anna and the king danced the polka to "Shall We Dance" during the pivotal scene in the second act. To all fans of "The King and I", and other Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, I highly recommend buying a ticket to this wonderful production...you will not be disappointed.

This show is a must for those enjoying Broadway entertainment. The costuming, sets and, especially, the singing were outstanding. Ms. Kelly's voice was spot on, but as well the voices of Q Lim and Joan Almedilla were superb. Highly recommend.

The play was terrific. We sat in row M 100's. If you have a hearing deficit you may want to sit closer to the front. We found it was difficult to hear some of the lines with the music etc, etc etc. Loved it, and its worth the time to take your friends and family.
