It was a great concert. He played music from his new album along with some of his classic songs with the Eagles. We heard several people complain about the show because they thought he would only be playing his old music. Information about the concert was available online to review beforehand so clearly those that were dissatisfied did not do their research. The concert displayed Glenn's artistic abilities.

I knew that the night would not be filled with Rock N Roll when Glenn & his band came out in jackets & ties! It was a good show with a good mix of Eagles songs, Glenn's solo work & some of his favorite music, by other artists, of all time. Also appearing with him was the NYU symphony orchestra & they added a dimension to a lot of the covers Mr. Frey did.

Glenn Frey The Sands Hotel & Casino Event Center May 18, 2012 To date I have seen Don Henley and Joe Walsh in solo performances. When I heard Glenn Frey was appearing at the Sands it was a no brainer. Despite the word of the concert coming late to the Philadelphia market, I was able to pick up a couple of pretty decent tickets. The venue itself is a little unusual. It is a renovated steel mill that has been turned into a casino and hotel. The theater lacks the acoustic properties of a theater like the Borgata s Event Center, Atlantic City. It has a bare concrete floor and masonry walls, and plastic folding chairs that are banded together. Yet it had the appeal of uniqueness due to its origins as a steel mill. The show was scheduled to begin at 8 PM. However Mr. Frey decided to be fashionably late . At about 8:20, the crowd began to become a little restless and there were some chants in unison directed at the stage. Finally at 8:23 the lights went down and the band members, all dressed in suits and ties, took the stage to an approving round of applause from the audience. About a minute later Glenn walked on stage and the applause grew in intensity and duration. The concert started off with three of the Eagle s standards, Peaceful Easy Feeling , Tequila Sunrise and Lying Eyes . Being the master show man that he is, Glenn really knew how to appeal to this audience. He informed the crowd that his father was originally from Nazareth, PA, the next town north of Bethlehem. He informed the assembled multitude that his aunt and some other relatives were in attendance at tonight s show, which elicited an excited round of applause. As he sang the first three songs he related the songs were written by Jack Tempchin and Don Henley. At the mention of Henley s name the crowd broke into applause to which Mr. Frey observed, It pays to surround yourself with talent. Upon conclusion of ‘Eyes , Glenn stepped up to the mic and talked about his new album. He said it was his first solo album in 19 years and for him it was a departure from his country rock roots. He described it as a collection of love songs and standards. He then began to perform Route 66 , one of the songs on the new album, putting aside his guitar and stepping up to the microphone in the style of a swinging singer. His next two offerings were also from the new album and included For Sentimental Reasons , and as Glenn described the 1967 song The Shadow of Your Smile , the theme song from the movie The Sandpiper written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster. He further went on to note the song won a Grammy and an Academy Award. As the applause from the performance died down, he introduced his next selection as a song written by Randy Newman about a hooker and her pimp called Same Girl. As the applause subsided from this number, Glenn announced his next song as a Brian Wilson song entitled Caroline, No . This offering complete, he announced his next song would be another 1967 hit, The Look of Love. He described how the song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the James Bond Movie, Casino Royale . He proceeded to perform the Ray Charles song, Worried Mind . At the conclusion of this song he joked that he should have entitled the next song Prelude to Obscurity . He seemed stunned when the crowd did not respond to the joke. He explained the joke and confessed his surprise at its bombing to which the crowd responded with a round of faux applause. The matter of the bombed joke being settled, he performed The One You Love . As the applause subsided Glenn started to tell the story of what he was trying to accomplish with his new album. He told of how he wanted to make an album filled with standards and love songs. He related how he discussed his dilemma with song writing partner, Jack Tempchin. He was surprised at Tempchin s answer, Why not use one we already wrote? That was when he decided to use the song After Hours , which went on to become the album s title. As surprising as Glenn s departure from his country rock roots was, the surprises were just beginning. He related a conversation he had had with piano player Michael Thompson about the need to freshen some things up to which Mr. Thompson asked, Why not change the arrangement? they then went on to perform The Heat is On , but it was a very jazzy version. I think it is safe to say it kicked ass! It was so good I am surprised they did not include it on the new album. The surprises continued with an even jazzier version of Smuggler s Blues . Like the previous song, this one also kicked ass and the new arrangement would have been great to include on the new album. I am going to guess that Glenn wanted to stay with the nostalgic theme as the graphic on the CD makes it look like a vinyl record, so he avoided including the reworked Frey classics. At the conclusion of Smuggler s Blues , Glenn began to tell the story about how he once tried to get out of his contract with MCA records which he referred to as Music Cemetery of America . He told of how the company was so bad, They would have blown the Beatles. Next up was the song Who s Been Sleeping in My Bed , another Frey classic, this one written by Jack Tempchin and Bobby Whitlock, whom Glenn noted was a former member of Derek and the Dominos. As the applause subsided from Sleeping Mr. Frey and his band moved into a performance of You Belong to the City , one of my personal favorites. By this time ever one was on their feet. As the song concluded, the band left the stage at 9:42 Pm to a thunderous ovation, only to return again at 9:45. For the encore Glenn first performed Take it to the Limit which had a large part of the crowd singing along. Then came the surprise of the night. Glenn performed Desperado , a song that for all these years I thought was written exclusively for Don Henley. His performance was every bit as good as any the Henley had ever done, and what is probably the biggest tribute any audience can pay to a performer, they were loudly singing along. It was something to both see and hear. Upon its conclusion once again Mr. Frey and his band left the stage to a thunderous ovation. The crowd was really excited and stoked. Apparently Glenn heard it off stage and returned for a second encore. He performed the Eagles classics Already Gone and Take it Easy , making their final exit from the stage at 11:02 PM. The Set List: Peaceful Easy Feeling Tequila Sunrise Lyin Eyes Route 66 (from the new album) For Sentimental Reasons (from the new album) The Shadow of Your Smile (from the new album) Same Girl (from the new album) Caroline, No (from the new album) The Look of Love (from the new album) Worried Mind (from the new album) The One You Love After Hours (from the new album) The Heat is On Smuggler s Blues Who s Been Sleeping in My Bed You Belong to the City 1ST Encore Take it to the Limit Desperado 2nd Encore Already Gone Take it Easy The Glenn Frey Solo Band The band was set up on the stage in a crescent made of two rows. Glenn Frey transported his fans at Town Hall to a nostalgic time in music and won them over with his fondness and passion for it. It was a pleasure to see Glenn Frey perform. He sang songs from his new CD - After Hours. He rocked some classic songs like "The Shadow of Your Smile", "Route 66", and The Beach Boys' "Caroline No". And to keep with the atmosphere, Glenn sang "The Heat Is On" and "Smuggler's Blues" channeling Tony Bennett to the delight of the audience. Some Eagles favorites were sang as well as other Frey hits. My favorite was hearing "The One You Love"- just heaven. A great show covering many eras in music-a must see.

Did not know what to expect. Band was excellent. Glenn in good humor and great voice. Totally love the new album. He mixed it well with other of his solo work and some Eagle. But only Don Henley can do Desperado... Could not have asked for a better show. Great venue...

Show was good but on two of my favorite songs I was a little disappointed. On the song Smugglers Blues, Glenn slowed it down to sort of a jazzy blues number and I hate when artist change one of their best songs. On You Belong to the City, Glenn's age started to show because he couldn't hit the high notes. I'd rather have him try and miss the high notes rather just lower the key like he did. The last part of the show was great where Frey performed a string of Eagle songs and did them well.

this was a big waste of $200.00. he had no energy and appeared to be ill. he was singing songs like " the shadow of your smile and about 6 others from his new godawful cd. I have always been a big fan of glenn frey and have seen him live on many occasions with and without the eagles so you can imagine the disappointment to see a show with little or no effort to exhibit some life. it was like watching his lounge singer clone on the stage. he even managed to ruin "the heat is on" by slowing it down and playing it as a blues song. if i could give him less than 1 star i would. we left in the middle of the performance. save your money, you are only in for a huge letdown. i have spent my last dollar on glenn frey. it also appeared that he was having trouble playing the guitar which he did sparingly.

...he performed too many songs from his new album, After Hours. It is a collection of love songs plus Route 66 and the material was not his forte. He opened strong with 3 Eagles songs including" Peaceful. Easy Feeling" and "Tequila Sunrise" then launched into his new efforts. With the exception of a haunting song ("Same Girl") written by Randy Newman, the songs from the new album had the crowd restless and some people were leaving. Once sanity returned, so did the non-sellout crowd's enthusiasm. Except for an ill conceived jazz arrangement of "The Heat Is On", the second half of the show (no intermission) was strong and he ended with 2 encores (2 songs each). The band was excellent and Glenn's voice was outstanding - especially on songs like "Desperado", "Take It To The Limit", and "Take It Easy" Sorry, Glenn, I appreciate your desire to explore a new music genre, but love songs are not your strength. .

This review is obviously for just one of the shows on his tour, which was the DC stop. The venue was - surprisingly - only half to two-thirds full, which he commented on early. I am sure that was surprising to him given that he must be used to playing to rather full houses with the Eagles. Moreover, his latest album clearly was a work of love for him. I have seen the Eagles live a few times and love them and also quite like his solo hits. I thought his new record was a mixed bag upon first listening but really enjoyed his voice and the quality of his band during the live performance. Unfortunately, the sound mix was rather terrible. They had constant white noise in his mike, too much base, and he had to strain sometimes to be heard. He frequently fiddled with his technical gear and had problems with his ear piece as well I think. The lighting went also on and off abruptly sometimes as if the person who normally does it was not there. No string accompaniment for this performance. That said, he performed several Eagles hits, some of his own hits, including a jazzy version of The Heat is On, and several takes from After Hours. Those tracks sounded quite lovely live with his voice strong overall and a surprisingly good fit for the songs. Like several other reviewers have commented elsewhere, I enjoyed his own contribution to the CD - the track After Hours itself. I am one of those people who really appreciates seeing an icon like him in person and like his style enough that I don't mind him playing songs that he loves doing even if I don't always think that they were the singular best choices for the set list. The evening reminded me how wonderful it would be to see the Eagles perform in such a smaller venue. I will note in closing that I saw Don Henley perform live at this venue two years ago and have to say that his production was much tighter with his voice obviously also not just being different, but also stronger in my mind. Nevertheless, it was wonderful to hear an original Eagles member sing a lovely cross-section of hits and new materials. I hope he continues to be happy doing what he loves doing even if sales might not be as stellar.

Starting with Eagles songs..Peaceful Easy Feeling, Tequilla Sunrise, Cheating side of town, Glenn got the crowd going strong. A few songs from the new album and some solo hits from the past were very enjoyable. Then, he finished with Eagles Greatest Hits which he helped write with Done Henley....Desperado and Take It Easy made the night an amazing show. I highly recommend it to any Eagles fan...you'll love it as we did. Thanks Glenn Frey for a great night.

Glenn Frey launched into his performance with Eagles classics such as Peaceful Easy Feeling and Tequila Sunrise (a real treat for an Eagles fan as the band omitted this song during their recent tours) and the audience just loved it. Then he moved into a set of songs of his latest album ‘After Hours . He started with a kickin version of ‘Route 66 though staying true to the original. After that the New York University Orchestra joined him on stage for a beautiful rendering of ‘For Sentimental Reasons . The strings added a further dimension and did not interfere with the purity of the song. This applies to all songs of his new album he chose for this concert. They just sounded so natural and thus really amazing - Glenn s voice is so well suited for this kind of music and he truly did credit to those brilliant songs! Outstanding were the haunting renditions of Randy Newman s ‘Same Girl and Brian Wilson s ‘Caroline No . The crowd was in awe and really appreciated this part of the show. Of course, Glenn also performed some hits of his solo career such as ‘The One You Love (backed by the NYU orchestra) and ‘The Heat Is On in an excellent jazzy and laid-back style (great arrangement by Michael Thompson!). After two encores (each of two songs) the evening ended with ‘Take It Easy and standing ovations of a delighted and enthusiastic audience. Glenn was accompanied by his excellent band (Guitar: Danny Grenier, Bass: Wade Biery, Bass/Upright Bass: Reggie McBride, Piano: Michael Thompson, Keyboards: Richard Davis and Will Hollis, Drums: Scott Crago, Percussion: Roberto Chavira, Pedal Steel Guitar: Doug Livingston, Horn section: Tom Evans and Al Garth). I feel so privileged to have been there for the start of the ‘After Hours Tour! After having seen Glenn lend the Eagles his best rock voice over the years I was thrilled to hear him give all his heart and soul to the love songs of past times. It really paid off to have taken the trip across the big pond! Chances have become rather rare to see Glenn Frey as a solo act; so my advice is to take the opportunity if it occurs…

New material is cool to hear and if I don't like it I go get a beer or a bathroom break. But this guy played his WHOLE NEW ALBUM which would have been fine if it was in the same genre as all the rest of his music! It was a different type of music altogether. A few songs mixed in with the classics we all came to hear would have been acceptable but as a father of 2 young girls I don't get out much and was disappointed in the show on one of the few times I can get out of the house!!!!!!!

Glenn Frey's performance spanned the scope of his career/ Frey started with three of his best known songs from his time with the Eagles--'Peaceful Easy Feeling', 'Tequila Sunrise', and 'Lying Eyes'. from there, Frey went on to feature a number of songs from his new album 'After Hours'. These are romantic ballads that Frey performed quite well. Especially good were 'Route 66" and 'The Shadow of Your Smile'. From there Frey went on to several solo songs from the 80's, and finished with songs from the Eagles and Buffalo Springfield. Frey was in fine voice and his band was remarkable--able to handle the wide variety of musical styles that Frey performed over the course of the evening.

Glenn Frey is an incredible talent...and he did not disappoint, considering the age of this classic rocker. I figured going in that he would be promoting some sort of new album, but I hat no idea that he would be singing his new music for about half of the concert time. Actually, it wasn't 'new' music, it was more like 40's and 50's music that is a recreation of songs from some of his favorite artist of generations long since passed. I tried to keep my exceptions low and did not expect that he would be singing all tunes from the Eagles and I also knew that he would be mixing in some of his Miami Vice tunes, but I came away feeling a little disappointed . To Glenn's credit,he took the time to introduce almost all of the songs and to connect with the audience which was borderline geriatric. It was also very apparent that he is truly passionate about his music and of that music of an era that is essentially forgotten by most people. I can tell that I was not the only one expecting more Eagles tunes based on the number of people that got up and left during the show. Bottom line...I'm glad I went (he did sing the Eagles tunes really well), but I will look forward to seeing Don Henley or Joe Walsh instead.

Great show. Though it seems to be a matter of course that every artist needs to support a new album, as was the case with Frey, he still pulled off a great event. He played a few Eagles songs, most of his own hits from the early eighties and played most? of the new album. A few fans were sure to be disappointed, since the new album consisted of old standards (Shadow of Your Smile and The Look of Love were two of those). He pulled it off quite well and ended with two encores.

I have flown all over the country to go to Eagle concerts. I have seen Walsh and Henley several times on their solo dates and i must say i was looking forward to seeing Frey since i believe he is one of the best song writers/collaborators around but to say i was dissapointed in the show at the Sands in Bethlehem,PA would be an understatement. As like the other shows he started out with some classics and then played pretty much the whole after hours album. Now i must admit that when i bought the tickets i did not know and it was not plugged as the "After Hours Tour". I found this out the night of the show. Frey's vocals were strong and the band was tight but the sound/reverb/echo was terrible all night at the Sands. I sat in the 1st row and heard the echo of the drums a half a beat late all night. This i don't believe is Glenn Frey's problem but it did add to the total disappointment of the night. On another note, Desperado only should be sung by Henley! Period! Come on Glenn get back to writing rock ballads to which you are the best in the biz!

The Glenn Frey show was memorable. His voice was good, did a lot of old Eagles hits and enjoyed his singing of old standards. As for the new Sands Event Center, it has no style and the acoustics were very poor. Lot of echoing of the drums. I don't understand how a brand new venue in a classy hotel/casino could have been constructed with no thought to style or sound. Very disappointing on that end.

The soothing sounds of Glenn Frey's melodic voice was good to hear. He did great old songs and mixed in some of his new classic's. What wasn't enjoyable was the Sands Event Center. We felt as if we were in a high school gym. Flat seatting on folding chairs. The acoustics were terrible. This is a brand spanking new building. What were they thinking? So glad we had 8th row seats because anything beyond the 10th row all you would see is the guy in front of yous head. AND NO BATHROOMS? You must exit the center go into the casino for restrooms and then head back through security to re-enter the venue. All this for $125 a ticket? Fool me once sham on you, I'm doubtful I will return at that price.

I read a few of the earlier reviews that raved about the show. After seeing it I wondered if I was watching the same performance. The Eagles hits were fine but the new material was an absolute snore-fest and the dumbing down of "The Heat is On" to match to slow nature of the new material was really disappointing. Overall, I was unimpressed with the show and wouldn't recommend spending the money unless you like the new cd and are ready to listen to 8 cuts from it.

Having only seen The Eagles half a dozen times (!) I insisted my wife attend - it was great to see one of the creative forces of this giant band doing his solo album promotion. A great mix of classics from the main career, plus some charmingly arranged American classics from the new recordings. A genuine performer, a funny man and a professional through and through who I really believe is enjoying these retirement plan events, as he refers to them. His solo efforts get better with time an it was fun to hear The Heat Is On with a jazz adaptation. He was doing his bit for his daughter's NYU alumni by having them play strings, so clearly a Dad in touch helping his family and friends out through these tough economic times. His daughter must be getting some credibility for that. Great value, great fun I would go every night if he played a week in the city. Looking forward to seeing Th eEagles when they go back out on the road to celebrate their - interrupted - 40 years soon

I think he's one of the great American songwriters of the rock and roll era. He assembled a fabulous band that put on a totally professional show. However, I as much as I love Glenn's music and always will, he spent too much of the show doing songs from the new album of cover songs (which no one in the audience cared for), but more importantly, he just couldn't hit the notes in his own songs. This probably doesn't show as much performing with the Eagles, but with all due (tremendous) respect and admiration, the time has come to retire as a solo performer.

First off, I like Glenn and his sense of humor.... never get tired of hearing him refer to his first wife... "Plaintiff"... :-( The old Eagle's stuff was good to hear but he performed way too many of his new "old" songs and Glenn just could not cover the classic crooners w/o an experienced recording engineer at the sound board. A couple of the "classics" would have been ok, but he over-did it and was more into "his" favorite songs than in tune with his fans interest. Many people got up for a drink at the bar.... and ended up staying there until he returned to his early material. Tkts should'a reflected the fact that half the show would be a bust... :-(
