Great night all the way around. Easy parking, great theatre & opening act. Derek Trucks Band was better than when they opened for Santana at the X. Ruthie Foster was a great suprise, fantastic voice and the rest of her band was also good. Trucks did just what I wanted him to, waled on his guitar all night long. Played a little of everything I wanted to hear. Can't wait until he comes to town again. The zoo theatre was great, I had seats on the far left in the second to last row and it felt like I was right up front. Would definitely see another concert there!! Loved being outside, listening to music!

The Derek Trucks Band truly speak for themselves when they play. They put on a great show from start to finish. Derek is mesmerizing, the show goes by too fast. The music is so fresh yet so familiar. Love this band! Can't wait till they roll into town again!!!

I was completely inthralled throughout the entired show. I have never heard anyone do what Derek can do with a guitar. I would actually find myself lingering on a section of a number being played by repeating it to myself, than suddenly realize that the band was in an entirely different section of the number. I would rate it as one of the top shows I have ever been to.

Pretty much goes without saying the venue, as always, was fantastic. The music was SO so great. It was really an amazing show. An extremely talented group of musicians and loved the way "friends and special guests" streamed on and off the stage.

Nice B-day present for me. I saw the show 12-3, it was my 40th B-day. What a present. Not only did i get to see DTB for the 3rd time, but Tinsley Ellis opened for him & played with him during the evening. Jimmy Herring also played which was unexpected. Reeeeeal cool night.

Great show! First half heavily emphasized "Already Free" with the second half evolving into a veritable jam session including several guests such as Susan Tedeschi-Trucks, Col Bruce Hampton and Willie Harry. Well worth the time --- concentration was on the music rather than a developed show too which was refreshing.

This show did not disappoint us. Derek is an awesome guitarist. He had many different guests take the stage and played a wide variety of music. The crowd was great, and the beer wasn't outrageously expensive. My only complaint is that he didn't play much from his new CD, Already Free. I love several songs on his latest CD and he only played a couple. All in all, it was a great evening.

AMAZING SHOW! Tinsley Ellis opened up the night with a great 45 minute set with songs from his new album "Speak No Evil." DTB then came out and started the night with a very mellow first couple songs to allow the crowd to get on board. Susan Tedeski and Col. Bruce Hampton came out for "Feels So Bad," which was great! Tinsley Ellis came out later and they covered "Key to the Highway!" Jimmy Herring made two appearances on the night to put an exclamation point on an already amazing show! The second encore: "We're a Winner" consisted of Tinsley, Jimmy, and Derek all on stage!

DTB was great but the whole experience was Amazing. Col Bruce rocked. They threw out a little of Buddy Miles' "Changes" from Band of Gypsies. (Hendrix) Susan T sang great and sounded amazing despite her obvious cold. I think that everyone there was aware of how much DT relaxed when she came out on stage. His playing got much smoother and she put him at ease. The sound of the band was much fuller with Jimmy Herring and his son sitting in on guitar. A few guest drummers. I think that at one time there were 13 people playin' It was so much fun.

Great show and great venue. We didn't realize there would be a warm-up act, and would have preferred Derek and his band start earlier, but Col. Bruce Hampton got the house going nevertheless. Glad to see Susan Tedeschi join her hubby on stage as well!

The National has become a favorite venue, even being 90 miles from home. They bring in great bands that simply shine in this theater. Jesse Chong was a great jam opener, would see them again, and Derek Trucks Band is one of my top of the crop picks. They rocked from the first note and the crowd was so receptive they grooved right from the get go! This was a show not to miss, I'll make sure I never do. Thanks for a great night of music and love!

This was a very good show! Derek Trucks is the best slide guitarist in the world. Growing up with the Allman Brothers having Butch Trucks as a dad has done wonders for him. I was moving and groovin the entire time. The entire band was great! The lead singer has a unique voice that is one of a kind. This is the 4th time I have seen the band and they seem to get better everytime. A must see for people who have not seen them!!!!!!

The man is a magician. Derek Trucks has more expression in his leads than any other guitarist I've ever heard. He his a master guitarist both with and without a slide. The rest of the band is fantastic as well- truly a tight band. Each member compliments one another perfectly. Kofi Burbridge (keys) played a few great solos, and even used a wah pedal with his keyboard on a few songs. Todd Smallie's bass lines were clever and interesting- never plodding root notes. The percussionists- both Yonrico Scott and Count M'Butu- provided a perfect rhythm section with Smallie. There were even a few solos by Count M'Butu. Mike Mattison's vocals were always spot-on- he has a gritty R&B kind of voice and a falsetto that meshes perfectly with the band's sound. The National is a great venue to see groups like The Derek Trucks Band. It's not exactly intimate, but it's small enough that you have a great view of the stage whether you're in general admission, way up in the balcony, or right up in front of the stage. All in all, it was an incredible show. Whether the band is playing Jazz, Funk, Raga, or some old-fashioned Blues, the Derek Trucks Band shines. The Wall Street Journal has called Trucks "the most awe-inspiring electric slide guitar player performing today," and that's exactly true. I would highly recommend going to see the band wherever they are playing.

This has to go down as one of the 10 best shows I've ever seen--and I've been going to see and hear live music for the past 40 years. I've seen Derek Trucks--with/and/without the ABB for a lot of years--and this show at The National was the first time I've really connected with his virtuosity and his many influences. The entire band was absolutely ON--close your eyes and you're transformed. They played non-stop for 2 hours followed by a 30 second break and a fine encore--and really seemed to feed off of the crowd. It was an unforgettable night. At about 90 minutes I turned to my 18 year old son and said "you know you're in the presence of a god, right?" He nodded with tears in his eyes.

DTB was amazing. We have seen him play with the Allman Brothers since he was knee high to a grasshopper, then the last time he was playing with the guitar god himself, Eric Clapton. At times the show was Allman Brothers-esque, as the guitar playing made you slacked jawed for 20 or so minutes and you'd have to remember to breathe. You could see that Derek was channeling his uncle Butch. It was a great show.

what can you say when you have the world's best guitar prodigy who is also a sweet nice humble great looking guy with the world's best band, from singer to key board/flute player, from drummer and bongo player to bass player. From a bass player who smiles the entire time, (adorable!) to a guitar player who when he does smile lights up the entire venue along with a place in my heart? For blues that sounds as if it comes from all the blues players across all time and space like a conglomeration of anything and everything that blues represents to all people young and old. For a total jam band that transcends anything and everything you have ever thought or cared about?? Yeah, I am thinking I am loving the Derek Trucks Band. BTW, Susan you are one lucky woman!!

The best of the several DTB shows I've seen over the past few years. The band seemed particularly energized as Derek had apparently been touring in Europe (with the Allmans presumably) and had just recently reunited with his band. Scrapomatic (as a duo) opened and did a nice set to warm things up. Played a nice mix of the usual DTB live standards as well as some new (at least to me) tunes. The Cape Cod Melody Tent is a great venue as far as being close to the band, as it's relatively small, all seats have good sightlines and it's a theater in the round (the stage rotates throughout the show). However audio quality there always seems somewhat below par, with muddy sound (been to several shows there over the years, including the Soul Stew show last year).

After listening to a great many live recordings of the Derek Trucks Band and attending an Eric Clapton concert that featured Derek in his band, I have to say that witnessing them up close and personal was by far an unforgettable experience. Derek Trucks has surrounded himself with an exceptional band of musicians that compliment his command of the guitar. Their original material has grown stronger and more potent, and covers of blues essentials like Key to the Highway do justice to the genre. A rocking good time in Hyannis! A highlight of my summer 2009!

Watching Derek play the guitar is an event! I've never seen anyone play like him. His band mates are incredibly talented also. So soulful but rock and roll blues to the max!! I just learned about him while watching an Eric Clapton guitar festival video and HAD to find out more about him. Turns out people I know know him and his wife Susan. I'm from the Vineyard and I know they have played here years ago. It was just luck that he was coming to the Melody Tent this summer. I was mesmerized to say the least!! I could watch him play for hours on end.It was hard to clearly understand the vocals I must say it was a bit frustrating, but all in all it was an extremely enjoyable evening.HIs commitment to the music and not the "industry" speaks volumes also. I look forward to seeing him again if he comes anywhere near New England. Derek ....come play on the Vineyard somday soon. The Hot Tin Roof is now Nectar's but it's still rockin'

Once again, Derek Trucks and his band delivered a musically rich show from start to finish. These guys are truly a family. Their energy and feel for each other is just so deep and the sound that creates is just so smooth! The venue certainly had its drawbacks though. Although it offers everyone a great view, the sound was muddy at best. The stage rotates one direction than the other- non-stop. Got a little tiring trying to watch this way after a while. Worst of all however was when the band started really kickin it and people stood up to dance, move and show their appreciation. They were asked to sit down or leave by the ushers. Put a real bad vibe on what should have been a room full of joyful noise and joyful people!!

this show was amazing. the whole band sounded great. the drummer is incredible. but of course the man who made the show what it was was trucks. he is the greatest guitarist i've ever seen. i saw him play with clapton a couple years back. and the allman brothers about a year and a half ago and he shined in those shows, this one, however, was even better because it was all about trucks. he is brilliant the way he builds a song to its climax. whenever he comes around you should buy the ticket and see the show or you are missing out. i know i will be there whenever he plays the area.

This was my first time seeing the derek trucks band, and they did not disappoint. It was a great venue, awesome weather, the crowd was so cool and fun. He seems so cool when he plays, no prancing around or showing off, just makes a stand, and means business. The only thing that got to me, was how it seemed sort of rushed, because the zoo closes at 11, like they were trying to zoom through songs almost. But it was still a fantastic show, and anyone who likes blues should absolutely check these guys out. :)

Was able to get row 5 dead center the night before. Was familiar with who he is but had never listened to any of his music (Allman's of course but not DTB) If you go to the zoo, best seat in the house is row 5 (first 2 are for wheelchairs) seat 15 or 16 (the center 6 or so seats in the front are blocked off on the side so when the bum rush comes you still see perfectly) Opener Ruthie Foster was ok. The DTB vocalist was very nuanced from growly to pained to powerful. The vocalist was a separate musician who brought a different reading to each song. Keyboard, bass and drummer had a song to shine and were good. I have never seen the need for a bongo player so whatever to the guy in the purple mumu. Mr Trucks is no sparkling personality but he truly earns all of the "best of " titles. Proficient and emotive. "Few of my favorite things" felt like the classic Mountain Jam and the back and forth between Derek and Ruthie Foster (this was truly real, she had no idea she was coming back out or she wouldn't have changed into what she did and put her glasses on) was truly a moment that will be one of those "I was there when...". All around super fantastic (except for overpriced beer and the fact that you WILL get lost coming out of there in the dark... I finally ran into Mystic Lake casino one night before I had any clue, thank god for searchlights!).

I have been to a lot of concerts and love music but the entire experience of the small venue and the amazing talent of Derek and his bandmates made this the most intense, amazing musical event I have ever been to. I had seen Derek play with the Allman Bros. twice before but when he is in charge and can play what he wants it was so much better.
