Capital Cities

Capital Cities

Indie-pop/electro duo Capital Cities has blossomed from a couple of Los Angeles-based jingle writers who met on Craigslist to a ticket-selling sensation on tour with other of-the-moment indie acts like Fitz and The Tantrums and Alt-J. It’s virtually impossible to turn on a Top 40 radio station without hearing the band’s danceable synthpop single, “Safe and Sound,” not to mention the promotional campaigns it pops up in for brands like HBO, Smart Car and Microsoft. The pair, comprised of composers and songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, unveiled their first studio album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery,” in the summer of 2013 via Capitol Records/Lazy Hooks. On tour to promote the indietronica release, Capital Cities added bassist Manuel Quintero, guitarist Nick Merwin, drummer Channing Holmes and trumpeter Spencer Ludwig to the live shows, which included sold-out concerts at New York City’s Irving Plaza, as well as two nights at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre.

It was the last evening of 2013 non-stop touring for Capital Cities so they wound up at the historic Fillmore packed with crazy (or perhaps crazed) fans. Everyone seemed to be high energy and wanting to dance along. Ryan Merchant is a tall strikingly handsome lead singer and he combined with the bearded Sebu Simonian led the crowd through hand and dance moves for most of the night. They were dancing and hopping around the stage...even jumped off to shake hands and high five those close enough. Safe and Sound launched this band into stardom and it naturally closed the set....with even a reprised mix. I've seen the band three times now and always leave having had a great time. Hopefully after resting they will go out again in 2014

This show was incredible. I would recommend both of these bands to anyone looking for an unforgettable night. This is my second time seeing Capital Cities live, and I will continue to see them every chance I get. They are so energetic, they get the crowd dancing and it feels like a party. YOU NEED TO SEE THEM BEFORE THEY GET SO BIG THAT THEY ONLY PLAY LARGE VENUES. TRUST ME.

Gold Fields was great and I was thinking how can anybody out do that. Then Capital Cities came on and knocked me off my feet. They had great energy and I was dancing and singing along the entire time. I wished they played One Minute More but the covers of Holiday and Nothing Compares to You were amazing. Definitely the most fun I have had at a concert in a long time and I've been to a lot. The El Ray was a great venue to see them play in. I have a feeling they will be playing much larger places soon and I'm glad ingot to see them in an intimate setting.

I discovered them by chance at Roxy late 2012. I was with a friend and we loved them immediately. And then, they were everywhere on the radio! and not only in LA where they come from (was a work trip in Denver and they were being interviewed on the local radio, so proud, I was the only one knowing them already!). The show at el rey was really awesome, those guys have such an amazing energy! The melodies stay in your head forever, they even add choreography without seeming old fashioned. And the trumpet, oh my god the trumpet! Who thought it could give so much character to their band. So, even if you can feel they are still pretty new (the show can be improved with linking up the songs for instance) they are really great and will get bigger for sure!

This was the second time in 2 weeks that we saw Capital Cities (the other was at Edgefest in Dallas). They were AWESOME each time. We were graced with a meet and greet with the 2 singers, and our only regret was that it did not include the trumpet player, Spencer Ludwig. He is an incredible trumpet player; he is very entertaining as well. At TLA there are no seats except near the bar, so get there early if you want a seat.

My main draw for going to this show was Gold Fields. Walking in I knew only one Capital Cities song, "Safe and Sound" (the one they overplay on the radio), so I wasn't sure what to expect from their show. Walking OUT I was a changed woman! CC delivers the best, most energetic live performance out there, hands down. It was a non-stop dance party from start to finish and the song lyrics and hooks were instantly catchy (these guys used to be commercial jingle writers so they know what they're doing). The live trumpet player Spencer is INCREDIBLE - he adds just the right amount of soul to their sound and helps differentiate CC from other electronic duos out there like Chromeo, etc. Easily the best money I've ever spent on concert tickets... and I buy a lot of tickets. If you're at all into electronic pop or just want to experience something new, do yourself a favor and check these guys out asap!!!!

This was the most fun I've had at a show in a while. The opening bands were fun and energetic, and the crowd seemed to enjoy both groups. Then Capital Cities took the stage and brought so much energy, and it was one big dance party all night long. Could have listened to them play for another hour and would have been completely into it. I'll definitely see this band live again, and would encourage friends to go too!

I had to travel from Atlanta to Charlotte since these bands skipped my hometown this time around. I'm glad I made the trip. Lovelife (from England) opened. I had never heard of them prior to this show, but am now a fan. Gold Fields (from Australia) played next, and they were very good. I saw them recently perform on Jimmy Kimmel, and their videos for "Treehouse" & "Dark Again" have been in heavy rotation on MTV2 & Logo. Capital Cities (from L.A.) finished off the night with some very fun synthpop. They did a cover of "Staying Alive", as well as Madonna's "Holiday", along with their originals. Their matching white bowling jackets were awesome. The last song, a dance version of their hit "Safe And Sound", caused a jumping frenzy when they got off stage to dance among the crowd. This show was well worth the $19 that I spent on the ticket. I'll definitely go see these bands again.

This concert was straight up amazing. Warpaint was a lovely opening band of all girls which I did not know when I showed up. A friend of mine and I met 4/5 glass animals band members. We danced our socks off and sang loudly. The new golden 1 center venue is very nice. Milky Chance has been on our list since we came across them and the Naked and Famous too. We previously saw Glass Animals at Ace of Spades. Capital Cities was a real crowd pleaser. I loved dancing to their new and old songs. An unforgettable night for sure.

Warpaint and Capital Cities play real instruments and do not rely on prerecorded and techno gimmicks for live performances. The Naked and Famous sounded good, but Glass Animals and Milky Chance had their vocals drowned out by the techno noise. The new arena was sold out only because the upper level was closed off. The seats are uncomfortable and cheaply made. The restroom closest to our seats had only 4 stalls (women's); the line was long and so was the wait. Memorial Auditorium was a much better venue and last year was a much better lineup.

Warpaints set was literally less than 30 minutes long. I drove for 2 hours and even shaved my legs for this badass girl band that were barely given any time on stage. They deserved a longer set for sure. The rest of the bands were chill. There was also plenty of floor space so I do not understand how the venue 'sold out' of general admission floor tickets. Sitting in the bleachers made this show lacking. I probably won't be coming back to Electric Christmas because of this venue.

This was my first time at this venue. It was really disorganized with staffers moving people back and forth between lines because they had incorrect information. Once we got in, staffers also didn't know how to read the general admission tickets for location, so I think a lot of people just ended up sitting where ever. The bands mostly seemed amateur with the exception of two bands, so the experience leading into them was a bit blasé.

Warpaint, Naked & Famous, Glass Animals, Milky Chance, Capital Cities! A line-up of incredible new music, very impressive. Really appreciated the General Admission for seating. It encouraged wandering around. Wish the Upper Level had been allowed, you can sell those cheap. The lines for everything were too long and only half the vendors were there. Logistics fail. But the music, fresh, innovative, groovin' vibes. Enjoyed them all.

this was my third time seeing capital cities, and their show hasn't changed much at all, but the appeal of the show does get better with time. the fact that everyone knows the words to at least four songs that they perform (one hit record, three covers) makes it easy to enjoy yourself and dance away. not sure if i would watch them again, but i am curious to see if it gets better every time...

The show was awesome! They are such a great, upbeat and classy group. The only reason we did not give the show a 5 star rating is for the length of their gig. At about 1 hour, it was way too short and left us wanting more, especially at the Bird Nest, where it is not that easy to get to.

Being from Santa Cruz and now living in Tahoe, it was shocking to me that I had never even been to OAKLAND before, letalone to the FOX before! With close to $100 million in renovations and with our amazing Telegraph Room upgrade, the venue was astounding. We enjoyed the intricate details of walls and ceilings etc so much that I found myself staring at a balcony or statue before getting pulled back into the music! Captial Cities absolutely KILLED it! So awesome... so so fun! We danced our butts off, sang along to every word (sorry to those around us), and enjoyed great company of random strangers throughout the evening (Hi Kevin and Rachel!). Night Terrors and Scavenger Hunt were super cool! Watching from our original seats in the Loge was spectacular, but we stayed most of the night behind the sound booth in our VIP upgraded section. Being 4'4" tall, the view was SWEET! Looking right over the heads of the crowd, with private bar and bathroom, hors d'ouevres... what a treat! Thanks to our wonderful bartender Eva and everyone we met! The Den was a great place to start, too!

The two opening acts were pretty good but should stick to original material. Capital Cites has such a good sound they should also stick to original material. Also, drop the commercial for Forza at the beginning of the set. The sponsor should take a back seat to the band, not stand in front of them. That was a mistake.

The crowd booed at the opening Xbox / Forza 5 minute advertisement, setting the concert off on the wrong foot. Then the band continuously referenced San Francisco but never once mentioned the city of the venue, Oakland, further ostracizing us concert goers. When I saw capital cities at Coachella the energy was awesome and production flawless but they were over produced this time. I don't care for any band to lead the crowd in the electric slide; if you want me to move my body then make me do it with the music, not by employing some junior high school crowd manipulation techniques. I really liked the second time they played safe and sound.

Capital Cities themselves gave a fair performance, although I was not a huge fan before I went to their concert. They were high energy and had great interactions with the audience. However, their set lasted about an hour, which was very short. Both of the openers were maximum 45 minutes each.
