I've seen them several times and Rhett on his own and with the Serial Lady Killers. Rhett has the most star power, but the four together were terrific. What was nice is that they played mostly different sets each night and had different opening acts, although Sunday's openers were a lot better than Monday's.

sometimes seeing an anniversary tour can exclude great songs, but with these guys the songs are short enough that you get everything else you want to hear as well. well, there'll always be the fan that didn't hear the song they wanted, nothing you can do about that. with this show, though, you got the entire 'too far to care' album, which gives you most of the old hits, plus 15 songs - new and old. nothing really bad to say except the house of blues stage seemed a bit sparse, but the music made up for that.

First off the sound mix was terrible. The whole group sounded flat and overrun by the guitars. It also seemed like Rhett's voice was strained and he appeared to be drunk. He looked like he could fall asleep one minute and then the next he was just screaming. For the first time, I really did not enjoy their concert!

I have seen them numerous times and Rhett solo but on saturday night they were on fire..They played a bunch from their new CD (which also is great) but Rhett was screaming and sweating and rocking and the band is so tight and they really do smoke when they all get together on stage. A great great show and this tour seems to be the one to go to. It kinda a twenty anniv. show and hell after twenty years they know how to burn the niteclub down...

What a fun way to celebrate the new year. The Old 97s were fantastic. My only wish was that they played a little longer instead of the opening band who played just before them. It was no bueno.

NYE at HOB started off good and just kept getting better and better! The first opening band wasn't really my type of music, but it was so interesting sounding that I enjoyed it a lot. Next up was The Hickoids who didn't disappoint the crowd. Again, not really my type of music, but they were so different that I couldn't turn away. Finally, the Old 97's show was awesome! I've seen them at least 7 or 8 times (2nd time at HOB on NYE) and this was one of the best. They sounded great, the set list was perfect, they looked like they were having a blast and they are the PERFECT band for HOB. Thanks 97's for a great night that I will remember for years to come.

Lead singer for Old 97s started the night with a solo act. Good songs with great stage presense. Those Darlins had a good show. Fun to watch, reminded me of Susie Quatro(?). The Old 97s were basically too loud. Much anticipated songs were rendered incomprehensible by their volume. The guitar player was good but we were not able to endure because of volume and we left early.

Unfortunately we missed the beginning of Rhett Millers opening set which consisted mostly of solo acoustic versions of Old 97s material. Rhett's inner ham was in full force. Next came Those Darlin's. Maybe it's my own fault. My only prior knowledge of the Old 97's was that one of their songs had been on an episode of Scrubs, and my girlfriend liked it a lot ("Question"). I had no idea that apparently they are some sort of punk-country fusion band and that they wouldn't even end up including the only song I had ever heard on their playlist. The opening acts, the O's and Caitlin Rose were ok, hence the two stars - one for each of them - while the third star goes to the venue - the Pageant was awesome as per usual. Beatle Bob was there too - and while his Wikipedia entry states that when he turns up you can be guaranteed that the show is the best one in St. Louis that night - I'm afraid that doesn't say a lot for the music scene in this fair city.

First off let me say that i would see The Old 97s anywhere any time. I love The Bluebird Theater and have seen some great acts play there. What I really hate is going to see a great live band in a classic venue, and have the sound so poorly mixed that neither vocals or guitar solos can be heard through the cacophony. I realize that this was the first night of the tour for the 97s and Sarah Jaffe ( who I really was impressed by) but it takes a lot away from the experience when the music is so muddled as to be, at times unrecognizable.

I really don't want to be mean, because these guys clearly work very hard. But Rhett Miller's ego could barely fit into the theater. Granted it was a small theater, but he's not even the best player in this band. Pay to see the lead guitar player; he alone was worth the ticket price. My petty annoyances aside, the energy coming off the stage was undeniable.

7/8/09 The Texas band THE OLD 97'S played the Music Box in Los Angeles. A couple of months ago I saw Rhett solo in Redondo and thought he was awesome- BUT the energy that they create as a band is amazing! The show began with Murray doing a solo set of about 5 songs. It was great to see him get down to the country/accoustic roots. Then Rhett came out and did a few solo- also great fun, but the excitement really exploded as they took the stage as the complete OLD 97'S!!!! They played a great mix of their new songs from "Blame it on Gravity" as well as the old favorites. They played EVERYTHING from their most rocking songs like "Barrier Reef" to their most hilariously twangy country "The Other Shoe." The crowd was a diverse mix of old and young, rockers and folk types all mixed together having a fabulous time singing and dancing. I felt sorry for the folks in the balcony sitting down!

They've been doing this longer than (some of us (not me)) have been alive. And there is a reason for this: They are awesome. The Old 97's are the perfect blend of rock and alt-country and whatever else they choose to draw on for their graceful, hard hitting, witty, powerful music. I don't know who is in charge of scheduling but they should be fired!! What I saw of the Old 97's was amazing , as always, but they were cut short due to the Royale wanting us out so they could reopen after. Maybe 2 opening acts shouldn't have been booked then? The Old 97's seemed as stunned as the rest of us when they were told to hurry up and get off the stage. Not happy with the Royale blocking off the balcony either, what's up with that?? I will definitely see the Old 97's but I'm NOT rushing back to the Royale. I have been to many shows there with no issues but this really soured me on the place.

I ve been remiss in my posting so I have a backlog of May reviews. Passion was the theme of the day first there was my passion for Hamilton and seeing and reading about Hamilton s passions and then going to see one of my favorite bands and their passion for performing. After my Hamilton day, I walked over to Irving Plaza, which is not one of my favorite clubs in NYC. And even though I d just seen the Old 97 s two days before, at Irving Plaza they were the headliners. Irving Plaza holds a little over a thousand people so it s almost twice as large as Music Hall of Williamsburg. I got there before the doors were open there was a Ken Bethea (lead guitar) sighting so I was one of the first people in the club. There was plenty of room for me to stand in front of the stage but I don t like the set-up with the stage high up and the metal grating in front of the crowd. So I stood in my usual spot near the back. Motown, soul, funk, and R&B were playing through the sound system and one of the bouncers joked about dancing with me but just as he approached me a slow song came on and we both laughed and shrugged our shoulders. The room was still pretty empty when Rhett Miller (lead singer/acoustic guitar) came out to introduce BJ Barham (American Aquarium). Rhett didn t introduce Barham at MHoW and I m guessing that was because the Old 97 s weren t the headliners and, therefore, not the hosts of the evening. This time people were not quiet for his set. They may have been quieter closer to the stage but back where I was closer to the bar they were very noisy. I was beginning to remember another reason why I disliked this club. Barham played mostly the same set and told the same stories from the other show, although not in the same order. He talked about the November 2015 Paris attacks and writing the solo album because he was thinking of his family and home. Barham talked about his songs being depressing. I remember there were American Aquarium songs like Wolves, Ain t It Funny, Burn.Flicker.Die, and Lonely Ain t Easy and solo songs like The American Tobacco Company and a song about his daughter. Again, I enjoyed Barham s set a lot and want to see more of him and more of American Aquarium. I don t know if the Heartless Bastards played a lot of the same songs or not. They certainly didn t play The Mountain again. There are frequent comparisons between Heartless Bastards and the Black Keys (not only because they re both from Ohio) and for the first time I could hear a little of the Black Keys in the Heartless Bastards performance. But it wasn t enough to make me love or even like them. All the musicians are good - Erika Wennerstrom (lead vocals/guitars), Mark Nathan (guitars), Dave Colvin (drums), Jesse Ebaugh (bass/backing vocals), and I finally found the name of the woman on keyboards/guitars/percussion/backing vocals Kyleen King, who adds a lot to the band. It wasn t a sold-out crowd but it was crowded and many of the people enjoyed them. The Old 97 s came out to the same new wave song that had played at MHoW. There was a lot of excitement in the crowd and I could feel that back where I was but it wasn t enough. I was really regretting my choice to stand so far back but I don t like feeling like I can t escape the crowd. There was another couple making out during their set (one couple had made out during their set at MHoW). And this time several couples were dancing in the back. As always, the band gave everything they had for their audience. Since they had more room this time there was a lot of their jumping and running back and forth and interaction among the band members. And with more time, Murry Hammond (electric bass) got to sing more than one song Valentine was introduced as channeling the Everly Brothers. Rhett was in much better voice the one day of rest helped. And, as usual, he joked with the audience like coming out for the encore and saying, I can t lie. I planned for this contingency. Rhett also remembered playing Irving Plaza before but it was in the 90s so he didn t really remember. All are excellent musicians, including Philip Peeples (drums). It wasn t one of my favorite nights with the Old 97 s but that s only because of the venue and how far away I was from them. Their set was energetic and the crowd was totally into them.

It was a great show from a band that is one of my favorite indulgences, but the venue, The Newport, needs to get their act together on the pa system. The Old 97's recently released their 10th studio album, and are touring in support of it. Even so, they played way more songs from their extensive back-catelog including at least two, maybe three songs I've never seen them play live before. The crowd was into it, the band ROCKED, and it made for a fantastic show. I wish they could have played for another two hours! The opening band, Lydia Loveless was excellent. Her country with a rock edge style fit well with the 97's. She played for about 45 mins, then the 97's came out after only 15 min to change over the stage. They played for almost two hours straight. Came back for a three song encore.

What can one say about the Old 97s... they simply rock harder than every band out there. The set list was really tight so no momentum was lost - I love that they play virtually non-stop for close to two hours. They have such a deep library of terrific songs. Also, every member of this band is an outstanding musician. And Ken has a nearly heroic jump height... couldn't believe the air he got when playing Time Bomb. They seemed to be having a great time and the enthusiasm was contagious! Definitely will see them at the Stone Pony.

Tuesday night at Webster Hall showcased the Old 97s at their very best. The show rocked hard from the first song and never let up, building up to Four Leaf Clover with Lydia Loveless - just awesome. More importantly, Rhett really sang his best - holding notes instead of just shouting the lyrics. Too many highlights to mention, but Wish the Worst, Niteclub, Barrier Reef and Streets of Where I'm From really stood out. Having seen the Old 97's in a number of venues over the years, this was hands down their best performance. Great night.

The Old 97's are a great band. After playing together for 21 years, they are very tight, meaning they know and play the songs well. They are so energetic! They put a lot of energy into their performances! The mix of songs was great. This was my second time seeing them at The Sinclair in Cambridge. I came expecting a rock concert and that's what I got. The music was too way loud for my ears (they are still ringing despite ear protection), the sound guy adjusted the singers' mikes so you could barely understand the words, and the balance was way off. I did not expect to hear a studio sound, and I certainly did not get it. (I give the Sinclair 3 stars, generously; the sound guy could do much better.) What I got was seeing my favorite band perform live, giving a great 5-star show. They played straight, no breaks, for almost two hours. But the show started at 10 PM on a Monday. It could have started an hour earlier. But hay, I am 70, so I speak for myself.

Fantastic show - tons of energy and solid. My wife has always been nonplussed with "mid-tempo-ness" of some Old 97s songs and this show blew her away with the fast, danceable stuff. It was a great time, the crowd was very into it, even though it was clearly an older crowd, especially for Buckhead. The venue itself was fantastic - just a nice open space with plenty of good sightlines. Only downside was that while Rhett's vocals were strong, some of the other band's vocals werent as clear. Ken did get to sing his Coahuila though, alledgeing that he had relatives in the audience. My only bone to pick was with Rhett, who before starting into Driver 8, gave a litany of Athens bands, including Guadalcanal Diary (yes!) and then the db's. The db's although signed to Atlanta label BarNone, were never an athens band. From the db's web site, they all met and joined in NYC and "The fact that The dB s all hailed originally from North Carolina was another longtime source of confusion among both fans and music writers; occasionally they were even billed by unknowledgeable promoters as being a North Carolina band."

This was my 6th show by them and least favorite due to song selection and sound quality. I will go to see them again, even if they play the Buckhead Theater!

Another great show by Old 97's. The music was great, but Rhett's voice was clearly strained by touring. They played a great mix of old and new and the crowd loved their version of REM's Driver 8

The Old 97's were energetic, enthusiastic, & seemed to be having a great time. Unfortunately they were the only ones. The sound in the Buckhead Theater was absolutely horrible. The bass drum vibrated the entire venue, everything (instruments and vocals) were way too loud and distorted, and the lyrics muddled and unintelligible. The Buckhead Theater looks great, but I will not go there again.

Old 97's were great! They rocked! Rhett Miller is a hottie! But Buckhead Theatre acoustics suck! The renovation was nothing to get excited about ~ pretty boring.

I had the fortune to be at the Buckhead Theater in Atlanta last night when the Old 97′s put on the best show I ve ever seen them do. Of course, Murry was charming as always and Rhett was in a mood like I d never seen him in before. I m guessing the gorgeous, sunny Atlanta day had something to do with it. At one point he told us that he had the best day just wandering around the Buckhead neighborhood and thinking up things that rhyme with it. Let s start with the obvious, shall we? Of course they ended the night with the encore. Of course, Rhett came out solo at first, but only did one song this time, and he forwent the joke about being the youngest of the Old 97′s. Right after that, Murry came on and did Valentine, with Rhett adding sweet little harmonies — this ended up being one of my favorite moments of the evening. Of course, the show ended with a full-band version Time Bomb right after they blazed through extra-loud, extra rockin versions of Murder (Or a Heart Attack), Rollerskate Skinny, and Dance With Me. What an excellent way to send us all out into the night with a little dose of energy. Energy that I desperately needed to make the drive back to Athens. The rest of the show included some of my historic favs like Oppenheimer, Here s to the Halcyon (which I pretended was a secret nod to my handle on a little corner of the net where I store pics, music, snippets of thought, and have collected a few friends). They even drug out a couple oldies from their first studio album, Hitchhike to Rhome. I m not gonna lie, my pre-5AM wake up yesterday left me in a bit of a stupor, so I sort of zoned out in the middle part of the show. I was conscious enough to remember Ken sing Coahuila, after dedicating it to all the loser dudes in the audience. The main set ended with an awesome version of Four Leaf Clover. My only complaint is that there was some sound issues a couple of times, not volume-wise (lord knows it loud enough…please remind me to start bringing my earplugs), but in terms of clarity. Rhett s vocals especially were a bit muddy at times. I d be remiss if I didn t mention Those Darlins who opened. The hipster kids are all in a thither over them. Can t say I m in love yet, but I certainly see the appeal. Three chicks in a rock band with plenty of attitude, all three trading vocals and swapping out on bass/guitar think The Runaways….maybe too much so. It really was an awesome night to be in Atlanta and after seeing 2 great shows there since moving to Georgia, the Buckhead is becoming a favorite venue of mine.

I love watching the Old 97's perform. You can just tell that they are one of those rare bands whose members are all supportive of each other and are truly friends. I am always amazed by Rhett's guitar/arm trick.

The Pageant is one of the finest venues to see live music (at least in Missouri). Whiskey Folk Ramblers opened with a solid set. Those Darlins came on and really punked things up a notch. Old 97's took stage and began with the title track from their last release, "The Grand Theater." A good choice to get everyone bouncing and yelling. They maintained their enthusiasm through the whole night. Time bomb ended the 27 song set with a bittersweet bang (as usual). I love seeing these guys, they are some of the hardest working guys out there. They are genuinely nice and they care about providing a quality show for their fans. I guess maybe the only downer is I've seen them in small, skanky venues where folks know all the words to the songs and the energy is just completely different and better than in such a large venue where maybe half the audience knows some of the words. I had the pleasure of standing up front with a group of folks who did know all the words, and that was a lot of fun!

We have seen 2 shows at the Pagent and really enjoyed both of them. So when we bought tickets to Old 97's we were really looking forward to the show. However, when we arrived (about 30 minutes before show time) there were no seats left. I do understand we had GA tickets but that was riduculous. We stayed through the first act and about 2 songs into the second act. By that time, people were standing in front of us 10 deep making it impossible to see the stage. We asked why the balcony wasn't open and the answer was, "Not enough tickets were sold to have it open". Looked to me like there were about 150 tickets too many sold not to have the balcony open. We will think twice before buying tickets to a show there again. It was really disappointing.

Concert was decent. The first opening band rocked! The second band was below par and I actually had to go outside because I was tired of hearing their irritating lyrics. Old 97's rocked but the entire concert was ruined due to the annoying and drunk people obnoxiously dancing infront of our tables. We came to the Pageant early in order to sit at a table to watch the show. The Pageant really needs to monitor ppl standing infront of tables and blocking the views of others. The ppl standing infront of our table were ridiculously drunk and not respectful of others. We actually ended up leaving early due to this. I will not go to another show at the Pageant unless it's balcony seating. It's absolutely ridiculous that the Pageant doesn't monitor this better and make ppl move when they are blocking ppl that are obviously sitting at tables. Thumbs down on this one.

Show was fun. A real mellow crowd, but I had fun dancing! Old 97s played a lot of their big songs, but seemed to play them different (Faster/Slower) than normal. A few mistakes here and there, but nothin to complain about. Fun show all-in-all, would definitely go back.

I have seen them several times and have yet to be disappointed by them. The band is always tight and they are obviously enjoying themselves. Rhett talks to the crowd a bunch, which I really like too. Song choices are good and the crowd LOVES them. This show was on a Tuesday night but it was so much fun that it felt like Friday.

Langhorne Slim is always A++ and never disappoints. I actually left part way through the Old 97's. I really like the music that I have of theirs, but apparently they've changed their style...or they are just different live. They were too loud and just not what I expected.

Fantastic high energy evening-BIG crowd which was good to see!! Loved the band's interactions with the audience - very personable! Really love this venue as well. We have been to zillions of concerts in our lives and have decided that smaller venues are so much better!! I grew up in Texas so I'm partial to 'texas bands' but I'd like the Old 97's regardless. My husband is from Seattle and he's crazy about them!!! Please keep them coming back and we'll definitely be back for more!! AND.....we'll bring friends! :)

Disclaimer: I love this band. Seen them a score of times all over the country since 1998. This set list was great, they played "Busted Afternoon" (first time I've seen it live) and - as always - seemed to be having a great time. Only down-side, audio at the venue wasn't great. A little muddy - esp vocals - but, what can you do about that?

We've never seen Old 97's or been to the Music Box, and we were so happy with both. The show was great. Langhorme Slim opened the night and they were fantastic. The crowd was perfect. Lots of fans but not so packed that you couldn't hop around and didn't feel claustrophobic. Everyone just had a good time. The Old 97's played a lot of their hits. Most was pretty upbeat then they took it down and the lead singer sang a few songs by himself. They ended with Timebomb which was awesome! The crowd was going crazy. Great show!!! Only downside is parking. There is a very convenient lot right next door, but it's $20. I know it's Hollywood, but we'll do more research next time to find some street parking or a cheaper lot.

The venue was set up fine, but what really made it was how awesome the Old 97's were. They even played some songs I didn't know, which was a complete surprise, since I know their music so well. Phillip was especially on that night, and it was fun to see the guys interact. See them and fall in love!

One of the best shows I've seen in a long time. They don't mess around on stage - down to business, no stretches between songs, and one awesome tune after another. Simply an incredible evening and a great venue. Rhett Miller is very charismatic and they all seem to be having a great time.

The good news is we had a great time playing for y all. The bad news is we can only play one more song because of the freaking disco coming in. Rhett s good news/bad news line pretty much summed up the evening. I was excited to see The Old 97 s. I was disappointed it was at Webster Hall on a Saturday night when bands have to make way for the dance club at 11:00pm. I was looking forward to hearing my favorite songs. I was disappointed that my cold would prevent me from singing along. The opening acts earlier this year were Langhorne Slim, Those Darlins, or Teddy Thompson. For the one NYC show we got Kevin Devine. There were some young people seeing The Old 97 s for the first time. The young people did not get to see the band at its best. The boys were playing fast and loud and putting their all into giving us a great show. The guitars and amps were not working properly for most of the night. The show wasn t sold out but there was a good-sized crowd. There were the oldsters (more of whom you see at City Winery for Rhett s solo shows the seats and dinner and good wine make those shows skew to an older crowd) and the younger set who were at the Bowery Ballroom/Music Hall of Williamsburg three-day stint earlier this year. And there were the indie hipsters there to see Kevin Devine and were maybe staying for The Old 97 s. Almost all of Kevin Devine s songs start off slow and quiet and then build up to fast and loud. His bio says his lyrics are introspective or political but I couldn t tell because the sound sucked. He was okay and maybe I d have liked him better if I could understand the lyrics but truth be told, I d rather his half-hour/45 minutes had been given to The Old 97 s so that they didn t have to cut their encore short. The Old 97 s hit the stage running as they always do. And, despite the endless soundcheck by the guitar tech after the opening act, Ken Bethea s (lead guitar) amp stopped working by the second song. There was a lot of switching of cables and guitars before they changed the amp. Ken spoke more about this then I d heard him speak about anything on stage. Murry Hammond (bass/vocals) contradicted Ken s contention that the band was professional (which got a laugh) but you could feel the frustration because of the problems with the equipment (the band played through any problems so there wasn t any lull). Rhett Miller (lead singer/rhythm guitar) had to switch out his electric for the acoustic when he couldn t get a sound out of the electric guitar. And during Please Hold on While the Train is Moving Rhett seemed to be shouting at the lights he didn t seemed pleased with the focus on the band. A few songs later on Oppenheimer he asked that the lights come up on the audience so they could dance and the lights be turned off the band. But did their frustration affect their playing? No. We never got it s not our best show, I m pissed off, and we re not going to play well. What we got was it s not our best show, we re not playing well, and I m pissed off. That frustration only fueled their playing and the band s personality shone. Ken still gave us the fastest guitars this side of punk rock. We still got Rhett singing out, despite his hoarseness, a broken guitar string, and missed lyrics. We got plenty of Whoahs also. Murry s harmonies were spot-on, as usual. And Philip Peeples played the drums with his incredible timing fast and loud. Rhett lead the audience in hand-clapping and had us sing the parts we love to sing for Big Brown Eyes. At some point an audience member gave Murry a airplane bottle of whiskey that he set aside. When the band joined Rhett for the encore, Murry whispered in Rhett s ear and gave Rhett the bottle, which he drank and then threw against the back wall. And that s when Rhett said the lines I quoted at the beginning. I ve seen The Old 97 s enough times to have experienced good shows and great shows. I ve yet to experience a bad show. The band simply won t allow it.
