First time Hapa concert fan- Fan for life! If you Love Hawaiian music, then look no more. Both Nate and Barry s performances was awesome. The hula dancing added the Hawaiian touch on stage. Nate s Bass Playing solo was fantastic. Barry s style of playing was unbelievable\u2026 I feel sorry for the strings on his guitars have the concert. I wished they could off played more of the songs from there first CD- Hapa but the new songs are great as well. Looking forward to seeing them again. HAPA Rocks da Islands

Have not seen Hapa live in many years. Barry is irritating - he talks too much and plays too many non-Hawaiian songs. If I wanted to see a bad version of James Taylor type music I would have gone to a local bar in OC. Not enough time was provided for Nathan who has a more traditional local sound. Both Barry and Nathan are talented instrumentally.

We enjoyed the music, the seating need to be better (seat were to close and hard) But that didn't take away from the concert. We enjoyed that they included a couple of dancers. Made the show a little more Hawaiian. Alli in all we did have a good time.

I am not sure what I was expecting, maybe just "island" music. However, this performance was definitely unique. The island performances were a great accompaniment.

Excellent show with the sounds of the islands taking me back. Was amazed at Barry Flanagans mastery of the guitar. The show was great! The only negative is the Hangar's stage should be higher as it was as a stretch to see them over the audiences heads. All in all a great show!

We have been to several Hapa concerts but this was not one of their best. Sound was bad,. They should stick with Hawaiian music, traditional and contemporary. The dancers were great.

We have seen this group several times and are never disappointed. What a bargain this was! Granted, the seats weren't terribly comfortable and the sound system should have been checked before they went on but the end product of almost 1 1/2 hours of Hapa was well worth it. Barry and Nathan are an entertaining and talented team that can keep you mezmerized for that length of time. When do they come back?

We went, we saw, we listened, we smiled, we laughed, we remembered all great times we have had in the past when visiting Hawaii. These great guys brought it all back. You could almost smell the plumaria. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, the hula dancing started. What an unexpected treat.

This was our first time to see and hear Hapa in concert and man, did they deliver! Every single aspect of their performance: the incredible vocals, the amazing slack key and guitarmanship, the beautiful hula, their great stage presence and humor - it all came together for a wonderful, entertaining and moving experience! Their recordings are great, but they can't hold a candle to their live performance! We can't wait to see them again!

Brian was amazing with his guitar riffs. Malia Peterson was a vision I will not soon forget. Add Nathan to the mix and.........WOW! What a show. I was especially pleased to see the dancers from Hula Halau 'Opi'ilani, a group of which I have been with for nearly 2 years.

This is the second Hapa concert I have attended. The first one I had to leave at the break because of the volume. Nathan (I think that is his name.......the non-haole man) requested Barry to turn it down after about 3 numbers. It got better a bit on a few of the songs but some songs were so outrageously loud that I had to keep my ears plugged with my fingers. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring earplugs. I highly recommend that anyone attending a Hapa concert bring ear protection. I don't think I would attend another of their concerts because of this. The playing for the most part was pretty darn good...........both of these men can play very well. I especially enjoyed the solo by Nathan at the beginning of the second set. The dancers were very good and added a island feel.

HAPA's current tour is the real deal. It's not watered down by being part of a Hawaiian Cultural event, but is pure acoustic intensity with all the subtle sweetness that makes HAPA a dreamscape of island bliss. The performance is Saratoga, CA was set in the majestic backdrop of Villa Montalvo, in the most intimate of venues known as the Carriage House. Sold out to 300 capacity, the atmosphere was that of a big family room where Barry & Nathan of HAPA invited guests to enjoy a deep setlist and tell stories of another place and time. The music, poetry, and dance combined into one divine tapestry woven from sincere yet jovial artists. Barry Flannigan, the original founding member and featured slack key virtuoso, was out to prove he is still on the cutting edge of modern day six string deliverance. A perfectionist at heart, he lead the dynamic duo through a fullfilling two set catalogue of HAPA classics, new material, and insipring cover songs. Opening the evening with The Boxer by Simon & Garfunkel, we were immediately captured for the parables to come. A robust collection of instrumentals and songs with harmonic vocals ensued to give any HAPA fan the show of a lifetime. Barry worked the guitar like a master to its slave, commanding every flare up while twisting and bending nearly every string and grain of wood to extract immortal tones from the heavens. There is no "going though the motions" with Barry, he comes to play hard, and plays to win. He digs into the depths of passion, exerting himself to perfection, all while exuding humbleness of heart, offering musical tokens of appreciation to his adoring audience. In his own words, he constantly tries to out-do himself. He certainly pushed beyond the limit of expectation at this show. Barry was accompanied by the bigger half of HAPA, Nathan, who really set the foundation. His 12 string guitar filled the room like a blanket of canvass. And just when you thought this evening of angelic acoustic guitar was going to keep you in the clouds, he straps on his 8 string electric bass and slap funks you silly. His bass solo was a welcome element to this Hawaiian variety show, and really thumped me in the core of my soul. All the while, with gracious smiles and comedic tidbits, brother Nathan keeps you tickled. His vocals are unparalled by any modern Island artist, soothing tones with controled vibratto, which could bring any God to its knees. Just when I thought a short 2nd Set was in store, the tunes kept extending to make for one complete evening. The audience got to participate in singing the Chorus of "One Day", and we were treated to many a story of the background behind the songs. All the while, seeing the music brought to life through the movements of the one of the best hula dancers. Her grace was golden as she beckoned love as beauty. The stage and venue really became an island unto itself as performers and audience alike went to a distant, majestic place together, that of atmospheric delight, only possible by the passion of Mr. York and Tattooe of a fantasy island, HAPA!

Hapa is an amazing little band of 3 very talented musicians, along with an elegant and very graceful hula dancer! They were all superb, and the lead singer and guitarist is absolutely phenomenal. They performed nonstop for nearly 2 hours with one enchanting and uplifting sog after another. For me, it was a dream come true- I'd been wanting to go to The Birchmere for 40 years, and then to hear such a wonderful band of Hawaiian music, which I love, was a real unforgettable treat!

A well done show by a veteran duo. Unexpected bonus was some hulu dancers and a young ukelele player and singer which added color to the show. Barry Flanagan's guitar virtuoso was showcased, however I thought he often exaggerated his special effects and generally over-powered his partner's more laid back style. He also often referred to the track numbers on their CDs before or after playing a song, waving the CD around, which I found distracting. This was my first Hapa concert although I have enjoyed their music for many years after discovering their music while in Hawaii. I love their slack key and Hawaiian style songs but they lose me fast with the rap or techno stuff.

I loved them. First time to see them for me, would go as many times as possible. This us very intimate felt like we were part of the family. I was amazed at their skills with their instruments I did not know you could do so much with a guitar. Adian James a 10 year old played with them and he was great, they looked like he was a family member being mentored,

To be lost in feelings of belonging, Hawaiian tradition, extraordinary guitar, slack key at its best, Hula that was lithe, luxurious and mesmerizing, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Adele, and Whitney Huston, a little 10 year old pistol and an audience in love was Hapa at the Aladdin. The event surrounded me with feelings, memories and hope. Thanks for bringing them here.

Really enjoyed Hapa at the Alladin theater. Ron and Barry are amazing musicians and bring the touch of Hawaii that we've been missing. Beautiful hula dancing. Lilting, lyrical songs mixed with hard rocking guitar and ukelele solos. They involved the crowd and local hula dancers. The newest band memebr, Ron, has a beautiful singing voice. The one thing that I didn't understand was a 10 y/o musician brought on stage for a few numbers. It seemed his ukelele playing was good but the songs he chose and his not-quite-developed voice made me feel like I was at a school recital. Touching tributes to bandmate Charles Ka'upu who has been to Portland many times and delighted us all.

Always love them but sure miss Nathan Aweau. He was so great on vocals. I think the show was a little anemic and it hurts to say so but they need to bring it a little better. I have seen them many times before and this time it was a little disjointed and although a cute little child guest performer, I didn't come to see him and wish they would have played more leaving the little guy to YouTube. They really need some percussion and bass. That is what we hear when we listen to their recordings and we expect that lush sound. C'mon Barry, you guys have ton of heart and you always make time to visit with your fans after your shows, but we need that lush depth of music that brought us to you. I will always be a fan, and always recommend them but just needed a little better sound/performance. Mahalo

The act(s) were great, the Al Kabang brought some life to a limited performance musically. The hula dancer was exquisite - as the warm-up act and the leis for sale in the lobby. Hapa is as always consumate performers, it was just too bad that the sound crew did not take any time to allow them to adjust their amps/volume, so the beautiful sound was 'overblown' until the end of the performance. Thank God too -- the performers kept their liberal left-wing political remarks to themselves --- this time.

HAPA are such talented musicians, however the sound system in the room was terrible. We were in third row, center seats and should have been in the sweet spot. Everything was muffled and Barry (lead singer & guitar player) was constantly speaking off stage to the sound guys. Even he knew the sound was awful. That said, they were wonderful to see in person after years of owning and playing their music.

Happa is one of our favorite hawaiian group. We enjoyed there performance and will attend another either here or back home on the islands. Thundervalley casino stage hands could have done a better with there lighting. It had a small negative effect on Happs performance. All in all it was a good concert.

I was expecting more of the favorites (vs. Marley and Lennon), but the hula was mesmerizing - she made the show less ordinary for me. The lighting guy was annoying with the strobe on the audience. Appreciated the big screens - good idea. Could have done without the Whitney song at the end, instead would've liked the Hawaii Aloha to close the show. There's a large Hawaiian population in Sacramento region and I think that would've been a fitting ending to the show - always brings a tear to my eye anyway. Having said all that, I'm glad to support the Hawaiian artists when they come to town. Suggest looking at a different venue next time - the casino environment just doesn't have any aloha at all. Folsom Three Stages would be great place to play.

Saw them last year at the same venue with no opening act. Although I enjoyed Tupua, it seemed that Hapa's time was shortened as a result. Last year I walked away feeling happy and satisfied. This year, I wanted more and felt shortchanged. The mood was more somber but perhaps this was due to the death of their friend who was memorialized on stage.

tutpua was unbelievable. the dancers are of the best calibre and were great performers. the costumes were colorful and the dances entertaining. my husband lost himself for a minute and asked when the food and maitais were coming! no honey not a luau. this was definately top notch performances delivered by enthusiastic, energetic, happy to be there dancers and musicians. hapa took us down a wonderful little vacation for our minds to the best places in hawaii. our favorite beaches, nicest hikes and waterfalls, and experienceing the hawaiian culture and spirituality thru song and music. we enjoyed the mix of old and new as they carried up along their path of lilting ballads and fierce uptempos. will be back next year for sure!!!!

For those of us transplanted to the OC from Hawaii, it's a wonderful event when some island homies blow into town, bringing the aloha spirit with them. The evening's draw was HAPA. A recorded chant by Kumu Hula Charles Ka'upu opened the set, bringing many to their feet, some issuing tribal screams. HAPA entered the stage to this chant, and the show was wonderful from beginning to its moving encore ending. Barry hammered his guitar as usual, Ron and Barry's vocals were great, and we all had patience as they tuned their guitars to various slack key tunings, not a quick task with 12 strings. Four hula dancers, two wahine and two kane, added a beautiful touch to several songs. For the encore, HAPA sang the favorite "Lei Pikake" to a multi-media tribute for Kumu Hula Charles Ka'upu who had passed away only 4 days earlier. His photo, surrounded by lei, remained in the stage for the entire set. Considering Charles has had a profound influence on Barry and the HAPA ohana, the fact that there was a show at all was a statement of their dedication to HAPA fans.

Tupua was an incredible blend of polynesian dancing and rhythmn that set the mood for the Hawaiian slack key guitar with Hapa. Flanagan continues to impress with his incredible ability to play slack key like no one else. Ron closed the show with a beautiful tribute to former Tupua member, Cliff. Nate used to play with Flanagan and really added a lot to the show. The two would banter back and forth and it really added a bit more personal touch to the show. Mahalo for the evening to Hapa/Tupua!!

I have been attending HAPA concerts for quite some time now. I love their spirit and their music. I did learn of a couple recent and not so recent changes. In advertising the show the picture above includes Nathan and Barry. Nathan is no longer in this group. He left about 6 months ago. He was the bass, vocals and guitar which brought a very unique presence to the show. It was kind of a shock and I heard many people asking about what happened to Nathan. It was extremely heartbreaking to hear and see that another huge part and spirit of the show had passed away, Charles, on the previous Wednesday. I loved the venue and will return but I feel that there are updates that should be made so the fan family is not expecting what is advertised.

If you like HAPA or want that Hawaiian experience - then for $20.00 it's worth it! I was looking forward to seeing them live (never have), and I was disappointed. I don't think it was the best venue for them. We could hear all the OC Fair noise and music in the background. Their opening act - Tupua was great! It took me back to the islands (I'm from Oahu)!! They need to check their sound system, as the guitars were too 'bright' - brassy and twang-ee!! I was also hoping for more ukulele! Would I go back next year to see them at the OC Fair........jury is still out on that! Would I see them live in another venue - yes!

Nathan and Barry are a force in Hawaiian music. I found myself rocking side-to-side for much of the night, thoroughly enjoying every lick of music, vocals and the beautiful hula performances - both male and female dancers. I missed seeing Charles Ka'upu tho. Being born and raised in Hawaii, then transplanted to OC in the 1980's, I try to catch local bands as they come through our area. So glad I didn't miss one. They were a shot in the arm, a dose of Hawaii so desperately needed by us transplants. And they were so gracious to meet with fans after the show. Awesome! Hope to see them again real soon. The Hangar is an interesting new venue. Altho I had a seat inside, I was kind of surprised that they opened the huge floor to ceiling hangar doors so the whole OC Fair crowd could see the show as well. Nice that even more people could enjoy the concert! One side note.... it seemed like the venue operators had some problems balancing the sound for awhile, but overall a great night of Hawaiian music.
