Lucy Wainwright Roche was the opener and she was wonderfully weird. Rufus came on and I hadn't realized that he was playing a solo show. He was amazing from the beginning to the end. He played a lot of songs I never heard before and they were amazing. His voice is so clear and crisp. It was a privilege to see him play live.

Not your typical Christmas show. I guess you would call this a new age Christmas show. A lot of talent to be sure but definitely playing to the more liberal crowd

It was a perfect evening and a beautiful setting to hear and see Lucy Wainright Roche and of course, her brother, Rufus Wainwright. The sound system was great and their voices were in fine form. I loved their song selection. One of the best outdoor concerts that I have ever seen.

The only drawback was that this performance was taped for TV, so the performance was a little stiff and structured...Rufus didn't get to tell enough of his funny anecdotes.

Beautiful night in the outdoor theater at Longwood Gardens. Perfect weather, great acoustics, appreciate crowd. Rufus was in great voice and played a nice mix of old & new material. Sister Lucy was the opening act, and delighted the audience with her voice and wit.

Absolutely magical to see Rufus in the lovely Longwood Gardens. Watching night come on and the moon rise. His song about his father made me cry. His Shakespeare sonnet was wonderful. The crowd was awesomely quiet and attentive to both acts. You could hear a pin drop

He came on stage and started right off at the piano with "Going to a Town" dedicating it to the "healthcare debate." Rufus' voice was at it's most radiant last night. His keyboard work less so. But the setting was lush and intimate and he went through his set with the intensity and drama that is very much a part of him. My facorite songs he performed: the art teacher, dinner at eight, Les feux d'artifices (from his opera Prima Donna), especially though, Not Ready to Love.

We've seen Rufus pretty much every time he rolls through the Greater Philadelphia area (sometimes seeing him as many as 5 times in a year) and with but maybe one exception, he's never disappointed! This show seemed to be shorter than most concerts, but I attribute that to the venue's restrictions. It was fantastic to be in such an intimate setting and to be palpably close to the stage and the action.

Good concert overall, but sound system was so loud that at times it distorted the sound. Lifeterally painful to those of us sitting near the front. Why does everyone think louder is better? Rufus has an amazing, and amazingly strong, voice. No need for this.

As a 70 something year old person with young tastes, I wasn't sure if I would really like this concert. I already had some Rufus CD's and had seen him on television. But he is so creative, shares so much emotion, is so accomplished as a musician, his voice has such range, he puts so much of himself into his whole performance,, didn't stint on time, I just found the evening enchanting. Fortunately the weather was cooperative at this outdoor venue, with the temperature in the 60's and no sign of rain. Staging was simple and functional with good sound and lighting. And he used a real piano.

Opening for Rufus, his sister, Lucy Wainwright Roache, was charming, sweet, and hysterical. Her clear, beautiful voice was a treat! Rufus was himself, which is no easy feat. His voice was great, his wit sharp, and his piano and guitar playing wonderful to hear with tree frogs singing chorus. He played old stuff, which I love, ended with Cigarettes and Chocalte Milk, and an encore of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, complete with fountains in the back drop! The scene was breathtaking and the music so powering, it kept everyone silent and in their seats. This venue suited him perfectly.

I love the Wainwrights!! No only are they uber talented but I really enjoy the banter between Rufus & Martha. I miss Kate McGarrigle & Lou Reed as part of the celebration but having Emmylou Harris & Cyndi Lauper join the family was wonderful. Martha's young son joining Loudon Wainwright for "Rudolf " was adorable & it's nice to see the next generation of Wainwright so comfortable in front of an audience at such a young age. I look forward to this event every year, especially Sloan Wainwright singing "Thank God It's Xmas". Such fantastic music ability in this family! Wish they'd adopt me! Can't wait for next year.

A co-worker introduced me to Rufus Wainwright in 2001. We listened to Poses at the office often. The entire album is fantastic, but my favorite song was Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk . I saw Rufus for the first time at Austin City Limits Festival in 2012. He blew me away. His voice was incredible. My only disappointment was that he did not perform my favorite song. If he sounds that amazing at a festival I could only imagine how he would sound with the acoustics at Davies Symphony Hall. The show was just Rufus Wainwright playing either a piano or one of two guitars. He was stellar. After the first song he joked about how he had to unbutton his jacket because he was getting fat at almost 40. He said something about having to look perfect for the first five minutes or so and then being able to relax and look normal. He buttoned the jacket when he got up to pick up one of his guitars. Once the guitar was on he unbuttoned the jacket again. Not only did he sound fantastic he joked and told stories to the crowd. Rufus told us about performing in Northridge the night prior and how when he performed California he felt bad because he couldn t tell them that the song was really about them and told us that the song was definitely not about us. Oh wait, I wasn t supposed to tell anyone he said that. He played my favorite song, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk , which he hadn t performed at Austin City Limits. When he performed Poses he accidentally moved ahead to the second verse, but caught himself and went back to finish the first. The show ended with Rufus singing Candles a cappella without music or microphones. This was to as he said; turn the hall back over to the more classical music that is usually played there. His voice carried through the hall beautifully absolutely phenomenal.

Rufus is a world class performer, understanding the dynamics of putting the a unforgettable show. His first set was done in a song cycle where he performed the entirety of his new album Songs for Lulu without any conversation and or applause from the audience until the set was through. Playing the songs gives the music deeper understanding and really showcases the mind set he was in when it was all written. The second set was more lively, playing fan favorite songs from all his previous albums. His sister Martha came on stage to perform three songs with him, their vocals match in such perfect harmony. His constant chatter always had the crowd in laughter, at one point making fun of himself for screwing up the opening to Hallelujah. It was an amazing concert under the stars and one I'll never forget.

Martha Wainwright opened for Rufus and she was spectacular. She has a beautiful voice and had unique songs. The first half of the show was a performance where he played his newest album, "All Days are Nights: Songs for Lulu," straight through. It is not my favorite album of his but it was beautifully done. The second half he played songs off of his various other albums and it was amazing! He has the most incredible voice. The atmosphere was very relaxed. It was such a magical night.

I was lucky enough to arrive at the Park, outside the gates, during the sound checks and while Rufus and Loudon were getting their harmonies straight . Bliss. Rufus sounds better than ever. The Voice was in top form. The mix of RW "standards" with Judy Garland was perfect for the hot sweaty crowd (I can only imagine what performing was like in the heat!) What I found striking was the evolution from father to son, as evidenced by Loudon Wainwright II"s lyrics, masterful voice and interaction with the crowd. They be one classy family! - America be proud!

I have never, in my life, seen a performance so beautifully put together, natural, talented and smart as hell. I have been in love with Rufus' music, not just because of his voice, but because I thought he did what he loves. I did not believe my eyes when I saw how passionate he was. He's funny, smart, and can sing like a siren. People like him just DO NOT exist on our earth. The music was intense and simply beautiful. I mainly got the tickets for my dad, but I was head over heels for the show. Again... Simply beautiful. On the other hand... The theatre, was pretty mellow. Nothing special. Felt like I was going to church. HaHaHa! I was happy about the lack of theatrics from extras on stage. His presence, alone with his piano or guitar was amazing. The refreshments were EXPENSIVE at this location. REALLY rediculous... I don't care that much. Rufus made it all better. HaHa!

I beg to differ. Although I love most of his music, I follow him for the whole package. I have no problem with hearing about his politics - I agree with him. We are living in a time when our rights and freedoms are being challenged daily, and if we re not aware of this, we re not paying attention. As a gay man, Rufus is particularly vulnerable, and so, speaks out. We need to be listening.

The Carolina Theatre has acoustics that made it difficult to understand the words he was singing. There were whole songs where you couldn't figure out what it was about. Rufus Wainright delivered a wonderful performance in Napa! The crowd was packed with his loyal fans. Rufus sang a beautiful and thoughtful mix of his wonderful songs, including the very poignant tribute to his late mother "Candles" and "The Maker Makes" along with his classic favorites "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk", and the amazing "Poses", and very relevant "April Fools", "California", "I'm So Tired of You America". I try to see Rufus whenever he visits the Bay Area, and so it was especially meaningful that he sang a mix of old favorites along with songs not heard on his recent concerts in Santa Cruz and Sonoma that are so relevant to the political goings on in our country. And, finally, bravo to Rufus for indulging us with "Hallelujah"! Can't wait till he returns to the Bay Area again!

It amazes me that he is not more popular in America...this man and his music will be cherished for hundreds of years to come...but then again, most famous composers weren't acknowledged until much later-about the show- When you go to a Rufus concert, it's a bit like hanging in the living room after a fabulous dinner. Conversation, laughter, musical improv...it's never the same show twice. Rufus does what he feels, which is part of what makes him the genius he is. You never know what songs you'll hear, and you are left with a feeling that you were taken on a journey into his world, even if only for a short time. I wish he performed more in the US-we came from Portland, Oregon to see him. The last concert I had to travel to Oakland. But he's worth it and I will travel again,l if need be. :)

I have loved Rufus' music for many years - and loved his musical performance Saturday night at the Uptown. However, there is a huge "BUT" to my review. I spent good money to escape "reality" and enjoy a great concert. I did not pay to hear political banter. A joke or two - okay. But Rufus' prolonged derogatory remarks were in bad taste and definitely not called for. I appreciated his holding a one man show - it's hard to keep an audience's attention for almost two hours alone on stage with only a piano and guitar - but Rufus' voice kept my attention. That part was great! But have to add that I'll probably not attend another RW concert, nor buy more of his music because I was so turned off my his political tirade. Saw an RW shirt I planned to buy on the way out but was so sick at the end of the concert I didn't want the shirt. You're right, Rufus - work on the mid-terms - but don't lecture us on stage. So disappointed to have to write this!!!

Took the wife to see Rufus Wainwright. Great venue and great show. What a songwriter! Some road issues with borrowed guitars and recalcitrant tuners but this resulted in a hilarious exchange with hunky roadie Mike. Audience forced him to regurgitate Hallelujah and Rufus obliged but finished the night with an original song thankfully.

We were expecting a nice show in a great venue... We experienced a GREAT show in a great venue. Love the Ryman! Rufus and Martha sure know how to throw a family Christmas FUN Party. I knew their Mother, Kate was talented and Father, Loudon is a great singer/song writer but who knew that the entire family was that impressive. Sloan has a beautiful voice and a terrific writer herself. If all that Wainwright/McGarrigle talent wasn't enough (and it would have been), we had Emmy Lou Harris, Alison Krauss and Jamey Johnson gracing the Ryman stage as well. We LOVED it, just a great and fun show! Would love to see this show be at the Ryman every year or maybe alternate with Canada every other year.

This was a very disorganized show. I thought I was at their first rehearsal, not a show I would pay for! The highlights were EmmyLou Harris and Alison Krauss. The old uncle doing an old protest song, mentioning Desert Storm? What a has-been, not a song I appreciated in a Christmas show. There was a sort of rap song done by Martha Wainwright which was bizarre and frankly offensive. She announced it by saying "I hope you can tolerate this song". It was not really tolerable. Rufus Wainwright sang O Holy Night in French, without a mike, which was quite nice, but he announced it by saying "lets see how god-damned good the acoustics are in this auditiorium". Totally spoiled the moment and the language was offensive, especially for a sacred song like O Holy Night. The person in front of me said she was surprised anyone came back after the intermission. Waste of money.

The other artist were cool to have, but since the title is Rufus and Martha Wainwright's Chrstmas Show, I would have liked to see more of both of them.

This concert exceeded all our expectations. Rufus, Martha and family were incredible, and it was a thrill to see Emmylou Harris live as well. All of the guest performances were excellent, and it was a joy to see new talent alongside legends like Alison Krauss. The band was top-notch, the music selection interesting and varied, and the whole night felt like a family gathering.

This was the worse concert I have ever attended. It was ridiculous in all aspects. Rufus Wainwright is a talented singer but this "family special" was horrible. It seems like any family member or extended family was invited on stage to pretend to sing. Not one of the performers, with the possible exception of Harris and Rufus, could sing. None of the children could sing at all. None of the other family members even came close to being good singers. Most sang off key. The others YELLED while they were singing, I guess to compensate in some way for their lack of singing abilities. For the first time in my life, I left a concert at half-time, despite having paid $74 for a good seat.

I was not impressed. For a Christmas show I was very disappointed. I was expecting a show that was more lively and upbeat. This one seemed to be dead and draggy. They were not very organized as they did not seem to know what was going to be next. The only bright spot was the performance of Emmylou Harris. Even Allyson Kraus didn't seem too enthused to be there. I would not recommend spending the money to see this show.

Rufus, talented voice but not interactive with the audience, unorganized and a bit like being in his living room as he ad libbed the night of music. I have never been to anything he has done, so I was a little surprised... Not really what I had in mind to bring the spirit of the season. In the future, I will pass on tickets to the Wainwrights show, even if the voices have talent.

NEVER, NEVER again will I attend any show of theirs! Horrible! Martha flitted around, flipping her skirt, forgetting who was up next - although she obviously had a printed schedule in her hand. Rufus just pranced around. I'm sure they are very popular with others - NOT my cup of tea at all. The final straw was when Rufus commented on the acoustics of the Ryman. "We'll see how God Damn good they are"! Then proceeded to sing a Christmas song. The only thing I enjoyed about the show were Emmylou, Allyson and especially Jamey Johnson. I could have listened to them all night.

What a great night. The venue was just amazing, the bar was on point, and the intimate stage allowed everyone to be so close. I love the Fillmore, and I can't wait to return for another show.

My wife loves Rufus Wainwright's music, so I'm familiar through what I've overheard and find him listenable enough. He's a tremendous live performer and storyteller, though, so the overall experience is enthralling. I'll gladly pay to see him again.

However.....I didn't expect his sister to do a FULL set for a warmup!! It turned the evening into a 3 hr concert which was too long for a Sunday Nite! We weren't prepared for that....traveling & working the next day! I found his sister just mediocre....& would have preferred 2 hrs of solo Rufus as it was billed!

The show began at 8pm with Rufus' sister Lucy Wainwright Roche as a surprise opening act. Not only does she have a beautiful voice, she also has a great sense of humor. Rufus took the stage at 9pm and for over 2hrs he entertained us by performing a number of fan favorites mixed with some new songs. He is a brilliant artist blessed with an incredible voice and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Who needs a band when you have Rufus, a piano, and a guitar. I also love his quirkiness.

Rufus Wainwright sounded as good or better live than he does recorded. He's also quite funny and is a natural entertainer. He's so talented!

I've seen Rufus multiple times and have always loved his work. Not this time. There was little effort put into either production -- and less into performance. Had no problem with small production which I actually liked -- though reference to "not liking to pay people" speaks of Rufus' character. The music became very monotonous over time, with self-accompaniment of piano and guitar made me feel like I was getting beaten up. The banging chords on both instruments, and lack of melody would have been interesting on one or two songs -- BUT NOT for the entire concert. Pounding, pounding, pounding. Phillip Glass can do this secondary to his brilliance and vision -- not Rufus. LOVED the venue.

OMG. I thought Rufus was incredible on album, but seeing him just confirmed that he is a god in music. He was so real, and so honest when he played music. He really has talent. Many times I've heard his music, and known that he is unique and extraordinary, but he really brought it to LA. He played a song about his father (a new song?), and that just got to all of us. The whole concert hall was silent and still, and at that moment, everything felt right. Like we all recognized our pasts, and how they have affected the present and the future, but we've persevered. I felt understood. To me, it was a great experience. I highly recommend to see him live. He is magical up there.
