Jason Isbell

Jason Isbell

JASON ISBELL IN CONCERT:Alt-country singer/songwriter Jason Isbell is a master of writing songs that maximize the emotional impact of his heartrending voice. From his time with the Drive-By Truckers to his solo material with his band the 400 unit, Isbell has proven himself a consummate storyteller, building a loyal fanbase with his stripped-down, emotionally relatable songs. Riding high on the success of fourth album Southeastern, Isbell will support Ray LaMontagne on tour in 2014, rounding out his time on the road with select headline appearances of his own.  BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Born and raised in Northern Alabama, Isbell grew up playing music, encouraged by his musical family to take up multiple instruments.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit put on a solid, tight show that has been replaying in my head; even while I m sleeping. The playlist was deep in the catalogue with The Nashville Sound well represented. A bit of level issues on the sound up in the balcony, but overall a solid experience. Can t leave a review without lauding the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. Beautiful! The staff is the nicest I can recall. All of MSG should go there to take lessons on how to treat patrons!

Everyone in my family is a huge Jason Isbell fan. My teenage daughters began listening to him with the release of "Southeastern" and I quickly latched on after seeing him open for Ray LaMontagne a few years ago. I've seen him four times since. I would not have thought it possible, but he is better every time I see him. His band - the 400 Unit - is as tight as they come. And when his wife, Amanda Shires, joins them, the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. This guy can move seamlessly between aching country ballads and hard rock. He is as versatile as any artist I have ever seen, and I believe he is the most well-rounded performer currently in action. Don't sit on the fence. Just go see him.

Unbelievable sound and songwriting. Favorite artist by far so I'm biased. Food at the venue is mediocre at best. And everything is expensive. Those negatives only equate to a 1 star reduction as the overall experience and sound is positive.

Want to start by saying that the sound for this show was one of the best that I've been too, and I've been to many, many shows in my 48 years. The Tennessee Theatre plays a big role in the sound, but the sound guy for Jason deserves a standing ovation. Very clear sound and you could actually understand ALL the vocals. Jason played 2 shows at the Tennessee Theatre and both shows were equally good, and he done a good job of mixing up the setlist for each show. If you missed a song on Saturday's show, he probably played it on Sunday's show. One thing to remember if you go to a Jason Isbell show. Don't record a show with your smartphone because he will call you out from the stage. An uncomfortable moment in the show was when a guy on the front row was holding his phone up to either take a picture or video and Jason called him out making the guy turn his phone off. And he wanted it completely off. In Jason's words, "this isn't a conversation, turn it all the way off". Smartphones at a concert can be distracting, but recorded video can also be a bonus for the artist because many bands are discovered via YouTube. Overall, great show! If you get a chance to see Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit in concert, by all means, GO!

What a great show. The band was tight and they played with a lot of enthusiasm. Love the venue and the proximity to the stage. Parking was cheap and easy and there was a food court connected to the HOB, although we chose to eat there. What I didn't like is that I called and left a message twice and sent an email once to ask how I could upgrade the experience for myself and the 4 clients I had in attendance. No one from Live Nation bothered to contact me. After the show started, I told a bartender my experience and she said we could upgrade to the seats above for $45 a person. I would have done this is a heartbeat before the event began. We lost out on an upgraded experience and HOB/Live Nation lost out on $225.

Listening to Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit slay song after song was less like a concert and more like a religious experience. His emotional "Cover Me Up," with the solo acoustic to start, perfect lighting and sound, and the lead in with each band member as the song reached its crescendo was divine, Isbell's powerful voice holding every piece together. Like listening at the feet of the master. Everyone should be listening to this guy. Best singer/songwriter of our time.

Jason Isbell is one of the best singer/songwriters in the business today. He tells powerful stories and writes tunes to accompany them. He also knows how to rock the house. He and his band, 400 Unit, killed it at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte Saturday night. From the first note to the last, he had this attendee's foot tapping, head bobbing and hands clapping.

I very recently became aware of Jason Isbell having seen him perform on TV. He and his band are terrific musicians, and I highly recommend you see them perform. The Beacon Theatre sound system, however, destroyed the performance for Jason, and the opening act. The sound volume does not need to be at stadium volume for a small classic venue like the Beacon. The sound quality is also an issue. I hope the Beacon can rectify these issues.

This man is amazing. Haunting lyrics and then a rowdy story teller. Amanda Shire is a perfect accent and completes Isbell. The band equally balanced. THAT DRUM! Jason Isbell continues to polish his performance without losing his original and desirable rough edge. The stage lighting was fantastic: Especially for "Children of the Corn" I only wish I could have gone the second night. Too many favorite songs to contain in one show. The Beacon Theater a perfect venu. Bravo.

This was my fourth time seeing Isbell. His growth as an artist is astounding. With a new album under his belt along with the songs from Southeastern, his DBT days and earlier solo efforts, he now has a rich catalogue to choose from. The Fox offered a stunning art deco palace with great sound and wonderful amenities. Isbell's command of the stage and the 400 Unit band was obvious through out as he effortlessly went from folk to country to straight ahead shredding rock and roll. Don't miss him if he comes your way. And as for the Fox, this was my first time there and I'll be looking for my favorite artists to come here.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit came out and blew the roof off the Sherman Theater, and the minds of the audience. Having just that week learned the new album "Something More Than Free" was #1 simultaneously on the Billboard Country, Rock, and Folk charts, there were plenty of smiles on stage, and each song the band put a smile on the faces of everyone in the audience judging by the roar of applause and cheers from the crowd. Great new songs never allowed for a lapse in intensity by the band or from the audience. The new songs reflect a different mood in Jason's life with his continued sobriety, the upcoming arrival of his first child, and the confidence that comes with success, He's a great singer, an excellent guitarist, and a spectacular songwriter and it all was in evidence Tuesday night. I had no doubt I was in the presence of greatness.

I've seen Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 3 times this year. He never disappoints. The past 2 shows I have brought friends who turned into instant fans. This time I brought my 13 year old son who also had a great time. Don't miss Jason when he comes to ton! The show was opened by Communist Daughter and St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Communist Daughter, while good at what they do, was not really my thing. St. Paul was outstanding! I'd see them again in a heartbeat.

Having been to hundreds of shows over the years I do have a low tolerance for dumb ideas that impact a show negatively. In this case it's JASON ISBELL'S lovely and talented wife AMANDA SHIRES opening the show. Yes- she had just released her own album DOWN FELL THE DOVES which would later garner an excellent review from ROLLING STONE. I had listened to her album before the show in order to prepare which I do for all shows. Music is subjective- her material was just not my cup of tea. I felt the quirky- off beat nature of her work albeit original was not suited to open a JASON ISBELL SHOW. The other problem is she's performing twice and when she's done with her set now we all stand around for 45 min while they adjust to perform the main set. NOT GOOD! But I digress! JASON ISBELL AND HIS BAND INCLUDING AMANDA SHIRES ON FIDDLE WERE AMAZING. I think SOUTHEASTERN was one of the best albums in 2013 period. I think Jason could go out there with just a chair and his acoustic guitar and blow everyone away with songs from this amazing album! Point is- I could have done without all the DRIVE BY TRUCKERS material. I was there to see the genius that wrote SOUTHEASTERN!

Isbell has been a known singer songwriter for better then a decade. First with the Drive-By-Truckers and now as a solo act. He just keeps getting better and better. He seemed quite serious about showing Cincinnati He can write great songs and deliver them on stage in a clear and professional manner. But what surprised me most was that there was no way all the amps in the concert hall could cover up his clear outstanding vocals. He was able to take time in between songs to make the whole audience roar with laughter and express his gratitude for us all who were standing and screaming at the end of the songs. Not the loudest crowd I have ever heard but loud enough. He played a Southeastern (new album) heavy set but reached back plenty enough to keep new and old fans begging for more. The setting in the Taft theater was a perfect match for a young musician striving to be perfect. Great seating ,friendly staff , and close parking. Mr Isbell reminded me of a young Tom Petty on his Damn The Torpedos tour- and we all know what his career did after that. Better catch him in these intimate locations while you can larger venues and many more fans await in his future.

I have seen Jason Isbell a few times and he put on a solid performance especially after a long flight in from Europe the day before. The band I really wanted to see was the opener, St. Paul & the Broken Bones. These guys put on a great high energy show. Wonderful new southern soul sounds. Jas Isbell (and the 400 Unit) was excellent, no letdown with the artist. It was my first trip to Taft Ballroom, which is in the basement of the Taft Theater. There are no seats, so it is great for dancing, not so great if you just want to sit and listen. They do offer a full bar, so the adult beverages make it a little easier to take. Ticket prices are very reasonable. A good place to catch up-and-coming acts up close.

I won't try to pretend this isn't a biased review; I love Jason Isbell's music. Not only his music, but also the music that influences him that he sometimes incorporates into his set-lists or songs. Until you see a band live, it can be tricky to tell from their recordings just how produced their records are or how good of a musician they really are. From his playing with DBT, including the songs he wrote and recorded with them, I figured he was pretty good. Without a doubt, Isbell is the real deal. He carried every tune damn-near flawlessly, and played not only the crowd's favorites but slipped in a couple of his own favorites as well. Even some of his songs I was unfamiliar with, which for some artists playing live can become a drag, were as enjoyable as the ones I knew by heart. His band the 400 Unit is also very good (he even let his drummer sing a couple songs), and his 'feyonce' Amanda Shires provided awesome fiddle playing (as well as - respectfully - something visually aesthetic). Overall, a great show at a great venue. I hope I can do it again very soon.

Seeing Jason Isbell at the Kings Theater was a lifetime highlight. He s one of the best singer-songwriters and one of the top performers I have ever seen. Each member of the 400 Unit is also top notch. Amanda Shires (Isbell s wife) is a mean fiddler and her singing along with Jason is deeply moving. King s theater is gorgeous. Jason gave his usual great performance with his fantastic band. The music was amazing as always. My only complaint (and the reason I docked them one star) was that the sound was too loud, IMHO. It was louder than a recent ZZ Top concert. I am a drummer, so I know what loud is, but this was almost to the point of distortion. Hopefully this was a venue issue and not indicative of his other performances. This was my second time to see Jason at the same venue (The Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, TN). The last time the sound was not like this. Also disappointed that Amanda was not with him. Still a great concert.

Beautiful theatre with great staff! Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit put on their usual awesome display of musical talent. Highlights for me were two new songs off their upcoming album and a scorching "Never Gonna Change" to close out the main show. Only downside were the alleged Isbell fans sitting behind us that did not have a single unexpressed thought for the entire show. I've seen Jason Isbell's show three times now (once with his wife, Amanda Shires, and twice with The 400 Unit), and each performance vaults him higher up my list of personal favorites. I was only vaguely aware of his existence until a friend strongly recommended his 2013 release, Southeastern. Now, I'm a true believer. Isbell and his band take material that is already strong and push it to an even higher level in concert. Great vocals, incendiary solos during Decoration Day and Children of Children (among others), the accordion on Codeine--too many highlights to list, really. And, the full band live version of Cover Me Up is worth the price of admission all by itself, as the beautiful ballad you hear on the CD morphs into a soul-stirring epic of desperate passion. The band also encored with a solid new song, the up-tempo Hope the High Road, from their forthcoming new release scheduled for June. My only quibbles: when Isbell played acoustic lead, the vocals were easy to understand, but his voice was occasionally drowned out when he played one of his electric guitars; and he's omitted my two favorites from Southeastern (New South Wales and Relatively Easy) from the setlists at all three shows that I've seen.

I have never done one of the casino shows, so I didnt know what to expect. Jason played well, but a few thoughts. 1. Short show - Jason commented that is how it works at a casino. But, please don't shortchange me. I will spend time in your bars, and even spent the night in your hotel, but play a full set. 2. The venue is non-smoking, the hotel is non-smoking, but a casino floor is a smokers paradise. You have to walk through the casino to get to the floor. 3. Banquet chairs in a massive ballroom do not put off a good vibe.

Opening act, Josh Ritter and his band were just great - the power to the microphones and instruments went out for a bit and they just got acoustic instruments, moved to the front of the stage and played and sang (real loud!) as best they could. The audience loved it! Jason Isbell has an amazing voice - can be soooo powerful - gives you chills. His band was really good - especially the guitar player who also sang some pretty good harmony! All in all, a really enjoyable concert - glad I went!

Josh and Jason are the top of the heap when it comes to songwriting. If you don't know their music it's because they are not played on the mainstream media. Josh is like the modern day Dylan with his lyrics and Jason will eventually match the catalog with many mind blowing songs to come. During the opening set the P.A. went out and Josh played two songs totally acoustic and belted out the songs like a pro with his Royal city band mates killing it with the harmonies.. Jason was nearly flawless with his guitar playing and his singing was mind blowing. His vocals seem to be better than is actually on the records. Overall the best combination of two artists since Dylan and Cash. These two are that good!

Josh's opening had a minor audio glitch but that didn't stop him and his band from putting on a super performance. Jason was awesome. Sounded fantastic!! The Landmark Theater is the perfect venue for an artist like Jason Isbell.

This is the second time we have seen Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and they were fantastic! Josh Ritter was great as well. We felt bad for him as the sound died quickly into their set, But Josh and his band came out front and sang some acoustic tunes while the sound was being fixed. Great job!

Josh Ritter was awesome! He exudes such joy and fun when he plays! His comments and asides to the audience between numbers make every one smile. Very disappointed with Jason Isbell. Perhaps Hershey Theatre was not the best venue for him. Music was WAY too loud. If he had just turned down the volume a bit... By the end of his 2nd number had such a headache couldn't wait for the show to end.

Josh Ritter as opener had tons a energy and was just the perfect opening romp to the powerful performance put on by Isbell and the 400 LB unit. I dragged my boyfriend kicking and screaming to this show but at the end he was a believer. Isbell is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation.

I've seen Jason four times (twice with the Drive By Truckers) and he just keeps getting better. Amazing songwriting, great lyrics, a beautiful voice and blistering guitar licks make him a quadruple threat. You can call his music country, or alt rock, or Americana, but I call it beautiful and category-defying. Keep it up, Jason Isbell. You are a star.

Josh Ritter was amazing, but too short. Jason Isbell put on an AMAZING show. Only negative was the annoying couple next to me that kept talking loudly pretty much the entire time.

What a fantastic show...loved hearing these songs come to life in a new way by experiencing them live. Has some surprises as well, given that I am fairly new to the Jason Isbell party. If he were playing in town again tonight, I'd be there.

It was my first time seeing Jason Isbell live and I will never miss one again. Not only is he an amazing lyricist and singer but he plays better than most lead guitarists, which was a pleasant surprise for me. The stage lights were on-point and choreographed well - every song had a different feel to it. My favorite song - Cover Me Up - amazing, took my breathe away how they built it up. I'm not sure if anything could top that song and how it made the crowd react. I took someone who had little experience with Isbell before the show and he was blown away with how good he/the band/ the show was. Hoyt-- what can I say about Hoyt-- best sound of any venue that I've encountered. I will continue to buy tickets here before anywhere else.

I've seen Isbell 4 times, and this was the only time I left the show thinking "That could have been better." He seems to have developed a sort of prima donna "rock and roll" attitude. The show was good and his band was tight, but there wasn't the banter with the crowd and the storytelling that's always made his shows great in the past. Played a mediocre setlist largely comprising newer songs without paying off his past by playing more popular tunes from the DBT and early 400 Unit days. Still, he's a fantastic musician and expert songwriter and guitar player. I just was a bit underwhelmed.

If you have never seen Jason Isbell, or been to Hoyt Sherman, you are missing out on a musical feast for your senses! Hoyt Sherman is not only historic, but offers up some of the best acoustics around. Jason Isbell was a delightful surprise for me. His 2 albums: Southeastern and Something More than Free were so much better in person! Jason is definitely an amazing artist that should be seen to be appreciated!

Great concert! Jason Isbell's voice was really clear and resonating. We sat towards the middle and he sounded so good. The crowd stood the entire concert. He played a lot of my favs, Cover Me UP, Relatively Easy, Stockholm, These are Different Days, Yvette and Something More Than Free and more. His guitar playing was excellent and was unexpected as I have never seen him in concert before. Loved it!

Ritter played several songs from his current album Sermon on the Rocks as well as older albums and Isbell played mostly new songs from the new album, but sprinkled in some older hits as well. All in all, it was an incredible show with lots to remember for a while and though I had never seen the two together, I think it was a good pairing and I'd definitely go see the two together again! I can't describe what a great show this was! I had seen Josh Ritter before. His energy is infectious. I had never seen Jason Isbell and what a true songwriter he is - I have a few of his albums, so I already knew this, but he is a true performer as well. I can't wait to see him live again!
