One of the heaviest shows I've ever been to, but the venue was great, not overly packed, and the sound was perfect. Nice lighting too.

Being a long time Mogwai fan, this was my first live experience. All I can say is WOW! The live performance surpassed all expectations. They are so talented with a unique sound. They capture your undivided attention and blow you away. Saw them @ The Mayan Theater, which an interesting place. The sound system and the light system were spot on. I guess people in LA are not too hip on Mogwai because it didn't look sold out. It was packed but I don't think sold out. Will see them again anytime!

When I bought my copy of their most recent album: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, it came with earplugs in a Mogwai logo case. Which reminded me how intensely loud this bad is live. Mogwai's music whiplashes from quiet melodic moments into full force assaults of of sonic blasting. The show was transcendent. Everytime I've seen this band, they are at 100%. Nothing worse than a phoned in show, but Mogwai. . . those guys are a freaking force of nature. This was my first event at the Regency Ballroom, and it had great sound and space. The only negative was that the security seemed really uptight and edgy, but for all that no more effective than the security at the Fillmore and Great American Music Hall, where I seem to always end up at for some reason. (I guess they just book the bands I want to see.) Anyway, yeah. . . Mogwai, they are not my favorite band to listen to on CD (though still good) BUT. . . they are hands down one of the very best live bands I've ever seen.

My entire star rating goes to Mogwai for their loud, amazingly energetic, and epic sound. Their performance was a great experience. My only complaint is that Showbox booked this horrible dance band called "Errors". With the amount of talent we have in the Northwest I am pissed they booked this boring and unoriginal opener. They were mindless dance beat repitition with horribly eq'ed guitars, and no structure. No to mention their entire sound in NO WAY fit with this bill.

It was such an amazing show. They played mostly the new album, which was cool, because unlike so many other legendary bands, the new album is totally comparable in spirit and quality to their first albums. I was however, totally stoked when they finished with an older favorite song of mine. Very cool. Furthermore, I have to admit in the past I have joined the ticketmaster dis club, but had a sobering moment on that prior follishness. I lost my ticket, and living about five hours away from Seattle at the time I realized this, I thought I was screwed as the show sold out. Ticketmaster had a replacement ticket for me at will-call. I apologize for spouting my previous years of ticketmaster dissing. What a fool I was.

I've been a really big fan of mogwai for almost 15 years, seeing them about once a year on average for the last 10. I've always supported them by buying LPs and merch (something I rarely do for other bands). They are one of the few bands I get geeky excited to go see. I'm almost too disappointed to detail a review- but feel like this show sort of represented a the end of an era for me (and maybe for mogwai)- The sound was confusing-bad at this show (this may have been the worst part), the band is tired, and their new drummer is still catching on. New songs feel uninspired and use predictable forumlas, old songs have been played so many thousands of times that it seems the band is unable to play them with perspective. The volume has been turned down over the past few years- which I get, but have secretly hoped would return. Mogwai, for me, used to be a raw, visceral, emotional experience- full of truly creative and beautiful music that surprised and impressed. Maybe they grew up, maybe I did- but I felt like I was watching my old heroes perform their dayjobs on stage rather than a solid rock show. I love these guys and will still buy their albums- but I've spent enough money catching them on tour to last me now.

Excellent concert. Wasn't really familiar with Mogwai's music. Relatively short initial set, but out for a long encore. Would definitely see them again. A bit too loud, perhaps. Drummer had a lot of energy and added to the overall music (the drummer for Errors, sitting in as a replacement.) Errors was also quite good for the opening act. Maybe a 5 star rating if I was more familiar with their music. Great venue and crowd.

Mogwai was pretty good. I had seen them perform an absolutely amazing show before a few years ago in Richmond, VA. This was pretty good comparatively. The sound was decent but not amazing. It didn't seem to have that enveloping effect that they have live. I do like the new album more now after seeing them live. Listening to the new songs live, which is to say, the way they wrote and intended, I think I understand the album better now. They played some well-known songs which was nice but their lighter touch (in mood, not intensity) seems to fit them better these days. But overall I give it a B. Sonically they are always nice to be subjected to.

I couldn't believe it when I saw Mogwai was coming to town, and I almost missed their only Bay Area appearance as I found the ad by accident just a week before the show....just got into this band and what a great surprise to see them. Although they don't have great stage presence (little to no interaction with the audience) they played a variety of songs from lots of recordings to near perfection. Their style of music may not be the best for "getting into" in a live setting, but it was great just seeing them.

Brilliant & intense performance @ a wonderful venue. My wife claims their show blew her mind, far exceeding her expectations. The only way this could have been improved is if they let me choose their opening act & if they would have added a concert in Northern California! All in all worth the 6 hour drive down & $200 hotel, we appreciate all the effort they have endured to travel to the west coast. Many thanks.

Mogwai played an amazing set.... but in contrast to the San Francisco show, the venue seemed empty. The crowed seemed more into what people were wearing then how epic and amazing this band was. Not a single complaint about the music- sound quality and levels were close to perfect. But over all the LA show just lacked something that can only be found in the fog of San Francisco.... a seemingly more appropriate city for their music.

Having never seen Mogwai and not even being that familiar with their songs, I went into the concert with a little apprehension. Boy, was I wrong. They blew me away. Their songs were very well-crafted, even though a lot of them did not have lyrics. Their sound was so raw and powerful, it gave me goosebumps. And they had great stage presence. You could tell they enjoyed playing with each other and have been for a long time. Overall, a great concert!

The voyage into psychedelic rock induced trauma started with a dose of Dead Meadow at the Orpheum Theater in the heart of downtown Los Angeles amidst skid row and rotting penny arcades from the turn of the century. Dead Meadow, while unknown in popular circles, is a D.C. based band that is already wrapping up their fourth studio album and touring with obscure acts like the famed cult rock band from Glasgow, Mogwai. The stage was projected with tie dyed lights, a trippy semblance of colors covering the undulating rhythms of Dead Meadow s guitar crazed rock. Dead Meadow is lead by Jason Simon s guitar and vocals through the mystic levels of rock n roll psychosis. The addition of Cory Shane on guitar enables the band to develop the sound of the Meadow further into abstraction, producing instrumentation that is on the cusp of experimentation. Driving the tractor for the band through the waves of blues inspired guitar slaying in the likeness of old Hendrix solos, is Stephen McCarty on drums. McCarty is the band s second drummer. The original beat thumper, Mark Laughlin, left the band in 2002 opening up the Meadow for the pulse of MCarty, who wanders in and out of consciousness with the color of the music, maintaining a mechanistic time on his kit like the Bonham days of Zeppelin. Only McCarty revels in more of rhythmic entropy rather than the overpowered playing of Bonham. Fortunately for the band, McCarty loaned out his grand pappy s farmhouse for them to record one of their more celebrated albums Howls From The Hills (Tolotta Records). In the album Howls From The Hills, and in the grasp of the hand painted dirt encrusted frescoes of the Orpheum, the billowing expanse of air was a catechism of misanthropic guitar rhythms and saturated bass lines from loyal bassist Steve Kile. The prominence of the bass is understated in the studio recordings, but within the walls of this theater the low frequency vibration was reverberating through the walls of the foundation. The lines brought continuity to the sound that carried the crowd through the diabolical riffs, and sent people s minds into a state like an opium bender coated in blotter acid. Guiding the ears of the audience was Simon s voice directing their attention into the psychedelic patterns of orange and red light on stage. The Meadow was inviting their listeners to experience the madness of soft death, illustrated by the inundated lyrics and fertile melodies that Dead Meadow as a band uncovers. Signs of distraction toward this purpose were absent, focused on their own cornucopia of wild surreal dreams; exploring Southern fields burned by a desire to reach into the essence of life. The music spanned the devastation and creation of the harvest cycle. If you haven t had the opportunity to wander through a burned field of celebrated melodies and dissonant guitar rhythms, then I recommend you diligently acquire the newest release, Feathers, from this cult-creating circle of sedated psych-rock musicians.

While I appreciate some bands who "perform", for the most part it does turn me off. In my mind, the music is enough - so I don't need to see band members jumping all over the place. Mogwai absolutely ROCKED Terminal 5, but all they really did was just stand there and play their guitars. To me, that what it's all about. The MUSIC. The ENERGY in the room. They didn't need to do anything else. It was just amazing. I thought the mix was fantastic. The drums and cymbals sounded great. The guitars and piano sounded great. Extremely loud...but beautiful nonetheless. (I was on the floor, not on the upper levels. There were moments where bright LED lights from behind the band would swivel and point right into our eyes. I found that to be really annoying. I had to look away. I took my attention away from the stage. But other than that, the lighting design was really good overall.) Absolutely a FANTASTIC show and I'd highly recommend any fan of post-rock to go see MOGWAI.

A lot of post-rock bands can play their heavy pieces, some can even play soft ones with an exquisite talent, but few can do both in one concert, and Mogwai definitely can! It's always harder for instrumental bands to connect with the public, due to the absence of lyrics that are usually a catalyst for the aforementioned connection. But bands with the talent and touch of Mogwai, never suffer this affliction. Despite the very static placing on stage, never moving more than needed to change instruments (and they do that quite a lot between tunes!), the flow was always there, between band and public. It's not easy to tell stories with only melody and have an immediate reaction from the audience, but Mogwai did it with every tune played in Terminal 5. Playing Ithica after Take Me Somewhere Nice was masterfully planned! I definitely recommend seeing Mogwai live, and I will absolutely try to do so again in the next opportunity I have.

I have seen these guys multiple times and they are consistently excellent. For them, it is about the music and that is as it should be. They hit all the right notes thematically in that they played songs off the new album and went into their back catalog also. My only disappointment was that they closed with "We're No Here," (a fine song) and not "New Paths to Helicon." Oh well, there is always next time.

I really like Mogwai's music and I've seen them live a couple of times. Everytime I've left the concert thinking that the music is great but the band is quite boring. The sound is special, very rich and broad. It's heavily relying on effects and distortion in a nice way. It's a cacaphonic experience which builds up and being released. In some cases it's just built up. Mogwai's music is like a perfect marriage of Sigur Ros, The Cure and metal. If they were more interesting on stage they would be a 5 star act. This concert had very few songs with singing, it was mainly instrumental. I don't mind it but some people might.

After arriving about 40 minutes late, I walked up the stairs of Webster to encounter the epic sounds of Mogwai bleeding into the hallway. The crowd was mixed, and seemed to be standing there in awe. Mogwai rocks- I know some people don't like the new stuff (which they played quite a bit of the two times I saw them on this tour), but it's all good to me. The only thing that stops this from being a 5-star for me was the venue. Apparently, there are two concert halls in the same building, so the volume was cranked way down, which takes something away from a Mogwai show. In contrast, in Philadelphia, they had the Marshall stacks lined up from one end of the stage to the other, and they shook the whole building. I just hope they play somewhere else the next time they come to New York. Other than that, great show....

After two canceled dates and over 14 months of waiting, I finally got the chance to see Mogwai and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Their sound was absolutely amazing and their setlist incorporated the perfect amount of songs from each of their albums. I will say that if you do plan on going to see them, you should bring earplugs. I wore them and my ears still rang the next day and I can't imagine if I didn't. Overall, I would see Mogwai again in a heartbeat. Also, the opening act was absolutely terrible, and judging by the audiences response to his performance, it was mutual sentiment.

Like really loud. I mean I probably shouldn't have stood 3 rows back in front of the speaker stage right. I probably shouldn't have forgotten my earplugs in the car. And I probably shouldn't have gotten so stoned that I forgot to move when I thought to myself "You know...this is a little ridiculous. Your hair is blowing back". With all that said Mogwai kicked ass. These dudes are a sonic force of nature. They sound great and the high range they play in and hold for a consistent level without sounding muddy is incredible. The opening band Errors as well as Mogwai themselves totally rocked!

Errors drummer played for both Errors and Mogwai sets. Incredible sound and great venue; that being said after being at the Palladium a few nights prior. Friendly staff as well. Good idea separating the 21+ crowd as well, plus the kids still got to jump around in front of the stage.

This was, bar none, the best show I have ever been to. I was dealing with several personal problems coming into it, so I was bumming out the whole way there. However, I couldn't have been in a better place for the experience: by the time they finished "Mogwai Fear Satan," I was sobbing\u2014it was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. I left the venue completely purged. This will definitely stay with me for the rest of my life.

Mogwai @ the Mayan,- it was surprisingly heavy with more dirty guitars than what I am accustomed to of Mogwai. This is not your dippity-do-relaxing music gig- I actually had my ears ring till the next day. It could probally speak more off the Mayan soundsystem speakers than Mogwai itself, but it was really what I was expecting of Mogwai - to have an epiphany.

MOGWAI and their opener were great. I got what I expected there. But note to The Mayan: my ears have been ringing for two days since the show, and I have definitely experienced hearing damage. TURN. IT. DOWN. I did not pay you money so I could lose my hearing.

Great music in an awesome theatre. Perfect atmosphere for an awesome band. Bring earplugs though, it was hauntingly loud

Best show I have ever been to. There was no bar separating the stage and crowd. We were all one big blob awaiting to be amazed. And let me say that this band raised the bar! This is what music is all about. Putting on a good show, minus the bias babble of mindwashing crap just bc you have a microphone. People come to see a show, not a circus, and mogwai was the illest, most down to earth, humble and passionate artisans that I have ever come in contact with. Highly recommended to those who enjoy their tracks, and to those whom need inspiration. Stewart definitely spread the passion off of his strums and sweat on us the scenic love of glasgow's landscape. I definitely left a million times happier than when I arrived.

Although Mogwai's performance at the Regency Grand Ballroom in SF was strong, I must say that I was not as impressed as their former show at the same location. The light show was weaker this time around, and the music was from their newest album (primarily), but in my opinion, they didn't play enough of their old, great songs. Their energy was good and the music was very loud, but on the whole, I was more impressed last time when I went a couple of years ago. Still worth the money though. I recommend it.

One of the best aural experiences I've had at a concert. Mogwai sounded fantastic and despite the disappointment with the Mayan Theatre, the acoustics were good. Great show, venue left a lot to be desired.

FUCKING AMAZING. Mogwai blew me away with their beautiful distortion and powerful sound. This show was heavier than I expected it to be, which was such a nice surprise. The only thing I wish they had done differently is play a bit more of their older stuff but I get that the theme of their new album is that heavy sound. And I also can't say shit because I fucking loved the live rendition of Mogwai Fear Satan, in all its distorted glory. In the end, hard core is definitely NOT DEAD, but I think my ears might be.
