This was an amazing show. I grew up on the movie & have seen Broadway Productions & this show looks and sounds fantastic with an African-American cast & Musical director. Simply awesome. It was a joy for the audience from the first note to the final 76 Trombones leading the way to enjoyment!

I thought I was at a Broadway Performance! I can't believe the theatre had some empty seats! People don't know what they're missing!. The dancers were top notch and the singing was so pleasurable. The lyrics in this show have never been topped by any other musical. So clever! and The acting was perfect. I'm so glad my adult daughter, my cousin and I decided to see this show. A wonderful event. Thank you for having it come to your theatre! .

The cast and crew outdid themselves in this production. Rich Stadler (Mayor Shinn) is an actor for all seasons and really added depth to this character. I now have a new expression "watch your phraseology". Patrick Walters (Harold Hill) has an incredible voice and is quite an agile dancer (thanks to his years with the OSU Marching Band). When Patrick proposed to his girlfriend at the end of the show, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Definitely a must see! Looking forward to next year's production - let's hope they engage the same talented thespians.

What a terrific show! The cast is fabulous and to see a show at the Palace theater of this caliber for $20 is a great opportunity! My family, including my four year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this production and it is all for a wonderful cause for Nationwide Children's Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care Program. Don't miss this show!

This show was an amazing tribute to the movie and Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy were on the top of their game as was the rest of the cast. I highly recommend the show which also includes some behind the scenes stories from Shirley and a question and answer session with the audience. Grandparents, bring the grandkids and expose them to the kind of quality music that they rarely hear these days. No vocoders or pitch fixing machines are needed with these artists!

The Music Man concert was more than I expected. The interaction with Shirley and the audience was fun.I was surprised how talented her son Patrick is. He played a great Harold Hill, good voice and dancer. Having the local high school band at the end was a real treat, added that something special. Q & A was pretty cute too.

Having had the honor and privilege to know Shirley Jones since 1948 when we took our first drama lessons together at The Pittsburgh Playhouse and I was able to dance and act in her first play in 1951 (WONDERFUL GOOD), also at The Pittsburgh Playhouse after she'd been crowned Miss Pittsburgh, it was a joy to re-connect with her last Saturday night backstage following the performance in THE MUSIC MAN - IN CONCERT at Mystic Lake Casion-Hotel's massive showroom in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Even if I'd never known Shirley (or one of the people with whom she performed in the film version of THE MUSIC MAN, named Timmy Everett, my best friend in high school in New York, who sadly committed suicide at age 35), I would still genuinely rave about the delightfulness of this production. For movie and nostalgia fans, it doesn't get any better than this production. It's a combination of the songs and performances we remember, interlaced with contemporary asides and banter to the audience, as well as Shirley's backs-and-forths with one of her sons, Patrick Cassidy, who is equally delightful as Professor Harold Hill. The first-class, Broadway-caliber remainder of the cast are of that ilk throughout, and the cleverly-devised finale, which I won't divulge, will have you cheering with a standing ovation. Better bring your goosebump cream (it there is such a thing) as well as a box of Kleenex. The combination of tears of joy and heartfelt smiles are perpetual and audience-wide from the moment Shirley walks out on stage (she still has a magnificent singing voice, too) until she and Patrick walk off stage at the conculsion of the production. Brava to Shirley and bravo and brava to this excellently-crafted and joyful trip down memory lane. You won't regret buying a ticket. I certainly was glad to do so.

This show was terrific. The cast and orchestra were wonderful. Their ensemble work made the show come alive without complete sets by letting the audience participate with our imagination. I would recommend this show to anyone and I would also recommend it to parents looking for a good live theater experience for children. It was lively and very well done by actors with wonderful voices and acting skills. I would go see another concert version of a musical because this was such a great experience! Thanks to the actors, orchestra and NJPAC!

this was just great. the performers were broadway caliber. the story was well told. the only complaint is that sign over the musicians that said "for colored passengers". it was distracting and added nothing to the story and performance. i would have given 5 stars but i thought the ending a little weak. they should have had the full band in those red costumes or had some children march in for the big "ta dah".

In this day of exorbitant Broadway ticket prices, it is amazing what can be done on a stage with minimalist staging when you have a great score, musicians and great actors/singers. All this for about half the Bway price. NJPAC is a wonderful venue.

This was a fantastic performance of The Music Man, the talent was impressive and the performers were able to convey the spirit of the material, even in this "concert" format. However, the show was billed as "inspired by historical accounts of communities established by former slaves across the U.S. in the Great Migration following the Civil War." I felt that simply having an African-American cast did not fully realize this vision. There did not appear to be much that conveyed anything about this history. In fact, even one character used an Irish accent, as if this was an all-White, traditional production of the show. We went hoping for something really innovative and imaginative in conveying a community of former slaves. Alas, this was really a traditional presentation of this play - an opportunity lost. However, due to the great performances and the wonderful material, it still deserves 4 stars.

I don't go to many musicals and the few I've been too have been in NYC so going to this show ( The Music Man ) at NJPac I was unsure of what to expect in terms of production quality. I couldn't have been more pleased, the players of the show where so well cast in every roll and every individual perform was just extraordinary in their roll. The acting was great and the singing was just incredible. I didn't read the credential of the performers prior to the show but at intermission I was compelled to read the bio's of each member and I found out that a lot of the cast had long professional careers on Broadway as well as in film and tv, that explained everything. One thing that really stood out to me was how engaged every performer was in what was going on even when they where sitting off to the side of the main action of the show. Very professional. So if you want a Broadway experience in a NJ suburb don't hesitate to see the "Music Man" @ NJPac. Just a side note this has to be one of the safest area's in the state when performances are going on, Newark is well aware of the perception of the city and they go way overboard with security measures and oversaturate the area with police so as to avoid and bad experiences. You're probably safer in Newark NJ before and after a show then in your own town on a friday evening.

Only drawback is that each cast member carried a binder during the play and read their lines. This was very distracting and took away from becoming immersed in each character. Could they not remember their lines?

Since this is an 'African American' version of The Music Man, we expected to see and hear variations of the original. We were very much disappointed. There was no rap, no dancing, no tap, no indication that this was the 'black' version, just a poor attempt by blacks to do what was an all white wonderful musical. Can you imagine a black woman acting her part as an Irish woman ? No need to wonder, see this play. As for the production, is also underwhelmed. There was no play, or acting, just songs - except when the actors (who could have been good) would carry their loose leaf binders around with them and read it word for word. It was very distracting and very unusual. All in all, it was a huge disappointment.

Went to see The Music Man on Aug. 18th at Ogunquit Theater. The play was comparable to a Broadway production in regards to the acting, costumes and sets. It closely followed the movie version of which I am quite familiar. Couldn't help but sing some of the songs along with the cast. Excellent!

Staging The Music Man is a major undertaking with a sizable cast - including lots of kids of all ages - demanding both singing and dancing skills by just about everyone. The Ogunquit Playhouse pulled it off, and clearly everyone was having a fabulous time. The audience fell in love with the lead actress who played Marion, and I don't recall ever experiencing the extended applause and near standing ovation after one of her showcase solos. Such charisma! My only complaint was that the entire cast was overamplified, making it difficult to hear the lyrics, especially in the ensemble numbers and occasionally with spoken lines. The problem may also have been with the placement of the mikes. This is not the first time this has been a problem at the playhouse (for us and other audience members with whom we spoke). This was the last performance of this production, but we've seen numerous shows at Ogumquit, and have really enjoyed the great majority.

This was a very interesting version of The Music Man. Unlike earlier versions -- I've seen both the movie version and the recent Broadway version with Craig Bierko -- Ogunquit's version of The Music Man seemed to focus as much on Marian as on Professor Hill. Not surprising, because the young lady who played Marian was truly terrific -- a wonderful voice and a real connection with the audience. Peter Scolari was very good as Professor Hill, playing a bit more as a member of the ensemble than as the man out front, but frankly, I preferred that; he also seemed to be battling a bit of a scratchy voice -- but what a trooper!! And the surrounding players were also very good; Mr. and Mrs. Shinn, Mrs. Paroo, Marcellus and the four school board members were all extremely funny. Overall, I think this was an excellent production!

Overall, loved it! Thought Julia Burrows as Marion was FANTASTIC. What a talent!! Also, loved the barber shop quartet, the kids, the sets and costumes. Thought Peter Scolari was weak as the lead. He came off as more cocky than confident and not totally likable. He was difficult to understand at times.

This musical was enjoyable and well staged with one glaring exception --- the music man (Prof. Hill) does not sing very well and detracted from an otherwise fine production. He simply does not do justice to this role. On the other hand, the other co-star, Marion the Librarian, was superb! A fantastic voice that was well recognized and applauded by the audience. The barbershop quartet was excellent, as were the dancers. The small children (marching band) who were not seen nor heard until the finale, were a great addition and should be on stage throughout more of the musical. Overall, I would give this performance a borderline recommendation.

I love the Music Man. have seen it many, many times. Peter Scolari's performance on Thursday August 18th matinee was extremely disappointing. Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, we thought he might be sick. He couldn't sing. He couldn't dance. And, his acting was non-existant. Lucikly Julia Burrows and the rest of the cast were outstanding which salvaged the show somewhat. As for Peter, he owes this audience an apology unless he has a note from his doctor.

The overall play was excellant. The lead character was miscast. All in my party agreed that he distracted from the others who all excelled in their part. The show was scheduled at 2:30 PM. The center door only was opened at 2:20 PM How you could seat mostly senior citizens in 10 minutes was a mystery. All were standing around a non air conditioned lobby waiting for the doors to open. Obviously the play as usual did not start on time. Other than the lead character we found it most enjoyable.

My 2 complaints 1- that I could only purchase 4 tickets so my family of 6 had to be split up. 4 say on the floor and 2 in the mezzanine. Would have been nice to sit together. 2- it was hard to hear at times and those of my group who sat further away said it was even worse for them. Everything else was great!

Overall it was a great show. Loved seeing Shirley Jones in person. The only thing that was kind of "off" was the fact that the women were dressed in formal gowns, not 1912-style dresses. The formals just didn't fit the small-town Iowa setting. The men wore period clothing; why not the women?

The real reason to see this show is simply Shirley Jones. As she tells her story about the making of The Music Man and working with Robert Preston you find yourself enjoying the great songs from the film as more of a celebration of their hard work so long ago. This concert of the Music Man is a different kind of stage production, it has a more intimate feel to it and you are easily drawn in to the performances by Shirley Jones, her son and all of the well chosen cast. This show is colorful, touching and exhuberant.

It was GREAT to see/hear the music once more. I originally saw MUSIC MAN on Broadway when it first started in the mid 1950's. Have not seen it since. This was a great production, as always! This was an amazing portrayal of the Music Man. The singing, dancing and set changes were outstanding. Well done OPH.

It was my first time seeing a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse and it won't be the last. The show was amazing - every performer gave 110%! We especially loved the barbershop quartet...and the dancers were absolutely fantastic! :) We left singing all the way down Main Street! :)

Kid friendly and a super job by everyone. I would recommend doing this if your up in Ogunquit. The playhouse is a great place, small but fun.

What a treat this show was in every way! My two children and I were looking for a uniquely Maine experience for our first visit... and our visit to the theatre was ideal. I felt like we traveled back in time when I pulled into the beautifully landscaped drive. The theatre itself was perfect for my kids who did not complain that they couldn't see. Most impressive, however, was the talent level of the actors. They were a notch above what I expected and my expectations were quite high. Thank you for a wonderful night that cannot be duplicated anywhere else.

Peter Scolari was born 100 years too late. He would have been perfect doing the vaudville circuit. He is very animated and mischievous. Julia Burrows had me in tears with her touching portrayal of Marian and her exquisite vocal talents. And those little kids, wish I was their manager.

I thought the cast, the orchestra, the sets and the overall presentation was superb. It was a joy to see it. My wife and I actually saw Van Johnson as the Music Man some 50 years ago. Peter Scolari was terrific.

With the exception of the male lead, the performances were outstanding. The train scene was very well done, both in production and performance. It has been years since we have seen this musical and we were thrilled with the OP production. Scolari's performance was weak but it did not seem to be a major distraction from the overall experience. The other performers more than made up for that gap and the supporting cast and crew were superb, even down to the children in uniform marching up the aisles at the curtain call, and the scene changes were seamless. We had an enjoyable evening! The one downside: I believe the prices are a bit steep. The theater seemed to have many empty seats for a Saturday night performance. Perhaps lowering the ticket prices would fill more seats and bring in more local customers on a more frequent basis.

My husband and I had a great time at this show! Peter Scolari as Harold Hill and Julia Burrows as Marian were outstanding. My husband and I will definitely go back to the Ogunquit Playhouse later this year!

Enjoyed it very much. Great talent, costumes and scenery. Had seen it in a much bigger theater in March - this seemed so much more enjoyable being in a small theater.

Story followed movie precicely! Songs were fabulous. Julia was wonderful as Marian - playing the part perfectly. Great show for the entire family! ~ Grandparents to Grandkids! All the kids were cute and acted well. My hubby (the engineer) says: The stage props were of excellent quality! The whole show was up to par with Broadway but w/o the broadway prices. We were very glad to have gone. You can see well everywhere in this (air conditioned) theatre, too.

This is one of my favorite plays and I was wondering if it would hold up and if I had made a mistake seeing a preview instead of the "real" show. Although it's an old-fashioned play, the themes are universal and the cast was perfect. Peter Scolari was a fine Professor Harold Hill with just the right questionable character. Julia Burrows has to have one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in theatre (and I have seen dozens of shows in NYC). The costumes and supporting actors were excellent, in particular the mayor and his wife Eulalia. The music was lovely with several songs I had forgotten. It was great to see Peter Scolari again. I had wondered where his career had gone.

This was an amazing stage production! The actors in the opening scene on the train, with their dialog and the train movement in unison was unbelievable. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. Our 9-year old granddaughter was star-struck with the performance. Thank you!

First time at The Ogunquit Playhouse. Small but quaint. The Music Man was great and we had great seats. I was a bit unhappy with the parking area. All of the cars are jammed one behind the other and it would be impossible to get out in an emergency. Perhaps they could rethink the parking situation.

Charming and entertaining from beginning to end...the set, the costumes, the talented cast, the orchestra. It all came together for a real uplifting, toe-tapping experience. Great for older children as well as their parents & grandparents. I loved it!
