Bar Kays

The Bar Kays was my first concert I've ever been to 8/26/1978 Chicago, IL soldiers fields. I still remember the drummer was playing the drums while they where on fire rising in the air. 38 years later same outfits and all they still rocked it out. Good for you, still at it.

Confunkshun was a 5 star Barkays was good . Larry sounded great but had difficulty keeping up with the pace

It was a night that I will never forget. So many memories over the last 20 years, wow!

I feel this was the worst concert I ever attended in my life. I came to see 3 different groups perform at different times. Instead I saw 3 groups perform all at once at the same time. I had to figure out which group was performing. I was really confused. I will never attend another Old School concert at the Radisson. Especially not those particular groups.

The show was awesome!! The group has not missed a beat. The lead singer sounds just as good as he did decades ago! I was really impressed!! I definitely would go and watch them again and again!!

I had a wonderful time from beginning to end!! This was my first time seeing the Barkays and I'm glad I was able to see Larry Dodson's final performance.

Upon buying a ticket for this concert, I was focused on seeing and hearing the Bar-Kays. Confunkshun quickly changed my focus. They were fabulous. The voices were as if they were playing in the 70s and 80s. In my opinion, they "stole" the show. During the set for the Bar-kays, I wasn't expecting the focus to be solely on Larry Dodson. Earlier in their career, even though Larry sang most of the lead, there was a "group" presence. This was Larry Dodson and back-up or supporting performers. It was hard to recognize some of the songs because the music was too loud and "muffled".

Bar-kays were Spectacular!!!! Michael Cooper and Confunkshun were very entertaining!!!

The show was by far one of the top 5 in the country. The BarKays with Larry Dodson's last performance at home in Memphis before his retirement at the end of the year w, He went out in Style!! ConfunkShun, what can I say Still the Top Group in the World after all these years. They still got!!! Music so smooth it takes your breath away! Loved It!

The Barkays always deliver. Missed the high energy of the Barkays and Confunkshun working together to achieve the name Masters Of Funk! Enjoyed the dancers as well and all of the great musicians giving exceptional performances.

AMAZING!!!!!!! Brought back so many fond memories and good times!! Confunkshun showed up and showed out as well!! It was just like the old days at Club Rosewood!! Loved every moment of the show and hate that it is the last one with Larry Dodson. If you are a Barkays and Confunkshun fan this is the show for you!! Get Ready to go down memory lane and shake your romp to the funk!!!

This concert had me Dancing in the aisles, it was Old School Jams at its best. So glad to see these bands live, it was the party of the year for me. Great way to kick off the Summer.

The a Stone City Band and Con Funk shun were the best ever! The Zapp band Zapped the life out us. The Bar-Kay's were a hot mess.

I was a little disappointed in the Funk Fest. Rose Royce was outstanding, so was ConfunShuns. Cold City Band and Zapp HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!! Zapp comedy was horrible....way too many outfit changes...if I knew better, this was a band making fun of the real Zapp Band I once knew when Roger was alive. I was sooooo hurt. I met Zapp in Mannheim Germany, while I was stationed there....it was unbelievable. Roger gave me a hug. The band was so awesome back then....I have listen to Zapp all my life.....my family knows my love and obsession for this band over the years....so HURT FEELINGS RIGHT NOW. This mess the other night was a disaster and a big let down. Let's not forget how long it took (30 minutes) to set up for WHAT....ABSOLUTELY A JOKE. CMON MAN!!! Bar-Kays mics were horrible, could not understand the lyrics. I paid $200 for this concert...

First up Rose Royce - not a big fan but the music and singing were clear and pretty good. Next up Stone City Band. You would expect the vocals not to be the same but you would expect the band to be on point. The band and backup vocals sounded nothing like the original. The young guy singing lead was pretty good but sounded nothing like Rick. Con Funk Shun - everything was on point!!!! The sound of the band was crisp clear and hard hitting. Vocals were awesome. Zapp - Awesome! Showmanship was great, vocals on point, music slightly muddy but clear enough to hear the differences throughout the songs. BarKays - was looking forward to Wholy Ghost since the hard hitting base tones in that song is what I always listen to when chosing a system. First the sound man must have been deaf. Sound was WAY too loud. When you go see the BarKays you want to hear BarKays music not the BarKays singing Uptown Funk. But worst of all the sound wasway loud and MUDDY. So disappointed when they played Wholy Ghost - couldn't distinguish any of the hard hitting parts. People left before that but people really bailed then.

The show was very unimpressive. The sound system in this place was terrible unless you were right in front, which we were at. During the last act of the show we went to the side of the arena and the seats were much better.

Great Show, but it was a little long (showing my age?)

That show was off the hook. Hats off to the stone city band. They did justice with their performance. BUT ZAPP shut the show down. I left after ZAPP got off stage because that was the highlight of the show for me. That was the first time that I have ever seen ZAPP perform and I was able to go to the show with my 22 year old daughter. She knew a lot of the songs but not the groups. She never sat down. She danced the whole time we were there.

The show Place Arena is a very nice venue for smaller acts (holds 5500). While the show was about 1/3 sold out, being on the floor allowed me see the act up close. The sound system was not the best it was "do-able". The best act by far was Zapp. Great energy and great showmanship. The most disappointing act was the Bar Kay's. the lead singer was not on point with the rest of his band, and being they were promoting 50 years in the business, the didn't play much of their own music. The lead singer had a public disagreement with his own band members. Since I have never seen Zapp & Bar Kay's before I was really excited. Would see Zapp again, not so with Bar Kay's. Rose Royce, Con Fun Shon & Stone City Band were all entertaining. Most people left during Bar Kays. Overall had a very nice time.

We had excellent seats, but could not enjoy the show because the music was extremely loud. We were forced to give up our seats and tried to continue the show from far away rear seats, but the music was still too loud, even with tissue paper in our ears. The previous show we attended was much better.

The concert was very nice except that the music was way to loud to the point that it hurt your ears.

My husband and I enjoyed the Funk Fest up into the last couple of performers. The BarKays you couldn't really hear what they were singing it was turned up so loud. That was really disappointing. A lot of people got up and left because it was just too loud and muffled. Our ears didn't get back to normal until later on the next day. The performers that were on before them were great. No problems with the sound.

I was at the Show Place Arena show Friday July 17, 2015. The show started out good with Rolls Royce on first, they were excellent. Con Funk Shun came on and they were very good. The Rick James Band played excellently but the lead singer was terrible! Rick James had to be turning over in his grave. Zapp, I thought had to much going on, on stage. They were all over the place one guy even came down in the audience to perform. I just couldn't get into their music. The Barkeys were terrible, I know they been performing for fifthy years, I was not expecting a perfect performance. The lead singer sounded terrible, the band sounded terrible, it was like someone said turn up the volume loud as you can. I couldn't understand one song, they sound like a big noise! I wanted to leave but I had a date with me and didn't want to be rude.

This show was wonderful and the music was banging! As soon as you opened the arena doors the music hit you like a sledgehammer. My husband and I danced the night away. I use to have a vast record collection and the DJ played a lot of the songs from my collection, he even played "The Bertha Butt Boogie "...no question!!!! I can not wait until the Temptations come into town.

Rose Royce was just warming up when theyre set ended after 5 songs They were good though and the female lead was hot damn good singer too. 2. next up Rick James Stone City band With only the guitar player and Drummer the only 2 members who actually worked for Rick it was more like tribute band no Horns!!! They did theyr'e best 3. Con funk shun only got to 5 or 6 songs Damn!! Mike Cooper wasn't too happy about the time restrictions but they were pretty good alway's give a good show just too short. 4. Zapp those cats never stop moving! they had more stage time than Con Funk Shun. they never half step good set. 5. The barkays the small crowd was even smaller when thy hit the stage and the music tended to drown out the singing at first but Larry Dodson is still a good singer and showman sparse dry crowd for the most part but the barkays worked hard

It is definitely a must experience (not just see) show. You will feel the fun and party of back in the day. When I say the crowd was up dancing the whole show,it was a party. Dont miss out and take it for granted. You will go back down memory lane and feel all the fun.

Rose Royce opened it up and they should have as they don't have many songs but they were good, perfect opening act. Then came The Original Stone City Band and they tried their hardest but the absence of Rick was evident. For 5 acts they too were placed perfectly as being the second band up. They played good songs and even kept the crowd up on their feet. Then came Con Funk Shun which probably should have gone next to last or last as they were awesome!! If they had been last they would have been able to play more of their songs and would have been the best performance. It helps that they have most of their original members. Next up was Zapp and they put on a good show with lots of action. At times their costumes would have lights on them and that was pretty cool. They started off really strong and I thought we were in for a great performance but it seemed the absence of Roger and Larry started to show. They stretched some songs too long, it seemed they were just trying to fill their time slot up. Then when it came time for More Bounce to the Ounce one of everyone favorites, they only played like 2 minutes of it then left the stage. After a strong start they kind of fizzled. Then the BIGGEST disappointment of the night as the Bar-Kays took the stage. They were absolutely AWFUL!! They shouldn't even have showed up, they turned on the music way too loud so you couldn't hear the lead singer. Performers usually do this when either they have lost it and can't sing anymore or having a bad night. Its a shame but I think its the first. Almost half of the audience started to leave about 5 minutes into the act and by the time I got myself out of there my ears were ringing really bad. I mean the music was turned up so loud and almost everyone around me that was leaving was complaining about the loud music. It was so pathetic that the lead singer saw people started to leave so he came out to the crowd to stop them. He would sing a few words then say something like "You love me, I love you". It was really sad. If they would have kept it at 4 acts and switched Con Funk Shun and Zapp with letting Con Funk Shun play more songs it would have been perfect.

The Funk Fest had 5 different bands at the Show place Arena. Rolls Royce, Rick James band, Confunksion, Zapp and Bar-Kays. I love 70's music and this concert has great 70s music

The lineups were good. I think Confunkshun stole the show because their music was crisp and clear. Zapp always bring it but should play more and change outfits less. Rose Royce was good but was rushed through their set. Barkays still has it after 50 years and the Stone City Band were ok. Overall good show but I would replace 2 of the group's with Brick and Slave. Lester Troutman of Zapp is the heartbeat of the group and really brings his A game to every show.

The show was great, majority of the people did not wear anything near black tie, I enjoyed everthing

It was good seeing the Bar- kays. I was happy that they were celebrating their 50th anniversary. Also hats off to the many groups that came to help them to celebrate. It is always nice to see a group that I grew up listing to their music. Although, I love their music, I thought the sound system could have been better. At times, it was hard to understand what they were saying. I wish nothing but continued success to the Bar-kays on their journey.

Phenomenal! It was truly a celebration! Can U say Grammy!

I really enjoyed the whole show everyone was awesome. I can't wait until next time, The seats were great.

AWB AND LARRY GRAHAM TORE IT UP!!! BAR-KAYS, LAKESIDE AND GLENN JONES CAME TO ENTERTAIN. I was truly entertained. Lakeside took us way back with the Pirate Gear.

Graham Central Station opened this show and were great.They played most of their hits but unfortunately not "Can You Handle It." Still they brought the FUNK and covered several Family Stone songs .During their set the crowd was electric.The Average White Band was next and they performed well, the band was tight and their vocals on point , " A Love of your Own", was done beautifully. After their set the show was disjointed with Bar Kays, Jones,LTD and Lakeside alternating performances each group doing one or two songs and then exiting while another came on. From this point on people began leaving. Lakeside was good but due to the way the show was organized you couldn't really appreciate their performance. This show could have been excellent if the groups performed complete sets and in proper order. Graham Central Station was the draw and should have closed the show.

This was a great show. All the bands were amazing.

Very pleased with the concert! Larry Graham was out of control, the AWB was sick and the Masters of Funk remain the Kings!!! Cannot wait until next year!!! Lady B was the perfect Hostess!!! The whole venue made us all feel good--the food the music and the professional staff! Thanks for a great evening!

The show started late. Then Larry Grahm came out and was amazing!!!. But they had to have him stretch his part of the show I'm assuming because someone didn't show on time. The change over between groups was way way too long. AWB then came out and there sound was horrible, you could barley hear them and they didn't sing their own music( go figure). Next Lakeside, LTD, The Barkays... They all came out together since they where running short on time, but they changed the sound and turned it up so much you couldn't understand a word they where singing. All you heard was drums & guitar. And to top it all of again they sang other people music, if I'm paying to see you it's because I like your music if I wanted to hear someone else songs I would go see that artist:(... Horrible

Larry Graham and AWB were good, but i wanted to see Glenn Jones preform more songs

The show was incredible and exciting. Larry Graham rocked the house, Average White Band jammed, LTD, Lakeside and the Barkays were great.

Larry Graham was awesome I would pay to see him over an over again. He sang everything and we wanted more he was the show opener.

This is the type show baby boomers need every year!!! I almost lost my mind when Larry Graham walked past me! I leaped over the person next to me to get to him and thank God I could not because it would have been on the 11:00 News..."Woman leaps on Larry Graham at the Dell concert, news at 11! You know what, next year I need Lady B to put together Larry Graham and Grand Central Station, AWB, Mandril, Tower of Power, Bohannon, and War (Throw in Brass Construction for good measure). All on one ticket and give out Ben Gay on the way in because we will need it in the morning! Great job Dell East. Keep up the good work.

Larry Graham was incredible Awb should get a B ;they needed one more horn ;Barkays was awful and had to refer to profanity;The lead singer for the Barkays needs to go on a diet and exercise;Lakeside was average and likewise LTD & Glen Jones ,but Larry Graham was worth it.He should have been last

I am big Larry Graham fan and did not really want to see all groups. So I did not get there right away. Found out Graham opened show so I missed him entirely. Did not think that was cool. Very upset with The Dell.

I'm thankful Larry Graham went on first. He was all that and then some.

The show was a good time, especially Larry Graham (who easily was the headline).

The show was awsome, all of the groups brought it to the table. The sound system was great you could hear all of the words clearity was good, and the D.J. he was great as well. First time at the event, would come again.

did not dissapoint The Barkays Larry Dodson is the Ultimate showman and he still moves and sounds great! there unit was tight as a Drum..Taste of Honey Janice Marie did TOH's two Big Hits she looked and sounded great and she is a hell of a Bass Player too Brick OMG Jimmy ,Ray and Reggie were off the Hook Sound just like the records

Zapp, awesome, Bar kays still hanging in there, but I should of known that not too expect much since they are in their late 60's, my dad's age. HAHa.

The concert was great but the Bar Kay's took to long to sing the hits everyone wanted to hear. It seems they were more concerned about promoting their new album more than playing the songs that made them stars in the urban areas. Club Nouveau started the night off right, then Zapp had the people out of their seats constantly.

Obviously the Barkays are the "original" Masters of Funk. Great showmanship, songs and performance! I would see them again at another venue. The sound system was 'horrible', what a shame that more time was not takent to give these 'legends of funk' the attention to detail they truly deserved.

Bar Kays were terrible! The volume on the music was so loud, you couldn't understand the words of the songs. It seemed like the singers were trying to hard to keep up with the act. Just terrible!!

The Bar-Kays did not sing any of their hits. After about two songs half the people started to walk out. I waited for them to sing one more song in hopes that it would be something that I knew. Wrong! the bar kays started to sing a song from their new album. Really! They should have sang their hits instead of garbage I never heard of and them trying to promote their new album. A complete waste of money. We finally walked out.

Although I had fractured my ankle a week prior to the concert, I was determined to attend. Wow the groups were spectacular! Each band played their hearts out and gave us memorable performances. The energy that each possessed was only that of "stars".

Great concert, Lots of fun energy. All three bands sounded great. Bar-Kays played for a long time & signed autographs after the concert.

This was such a bad show, I left before it was over! From old-school to old fools. They don't have enough hits to even be on tour. I just have one word to say retire! I did have one laugh, it was when the lead singer turned the mic to the audience to sing along, and I didn't hear a damn thing. Maybe they could do weddings and funerals!

I had a really great time!! I listen to that music alot back in the day and it brought me way back!! The crowd was great and the venue and location was cool. The proformers were great but the sound system could have been alittle better.

The music was on target. However I was not prepared for the opening act that preceded the main event. It was a little boring for a celebration. Once the showcase acts took over I knew we would have a good time. Another surprise was the way things were presented. Instead of three separate shows, they did a unified show that left many of the Barkays favorite songs out due to the sharing of the stage. My main attraction to the show was The Barkays, I have followed them ever since 1970. I wish there could have been more of there songs sang. In the end I felt that the Dazz Band stole the show with their presentation. Slave was a good match for the 1980s, standing their own.
