When Babasonicos decided to begin Thursday s concert at the Howard Theatre with the mysteriously seductive Flora y Fauno (Flora and Faun,) fans knew they were in for a treat. Singing, Ahora déjame que me engañe a mí mismo, entiendo que no soy de fiar (Now let me fool myself, I understand that I m not one to trust,) over hypnotizing guitar riffs, the band began their hour-long concert. Combining the name of Indian guru Sai Baba of Shirdi and the Spanish title of The Jetsons cartoon (Los Supersónicos), Babasonicos was formed in the early 1990s. The unusual combination of elements to develop their namesake is a true representation of the band's experimental and eclectic sound. Think cleverly cheeky and brutally honest Spanish lyrics, over catchy psychedelic-electro-pop-rock beats. Their sound can be at times more of an alluring lullaby, yet full-on sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll at others. The D.C. show was one of six stops of the mini U.S. tour, which included headlining Puerto Rico s Indie Fest with MGMT last month, to promote their long awaited tenth studio album, A Propósito (On Purpose.) With few U.S. tours under their belt, fans seemed pleased they didn t have to travel to the band s native Argentina to see them live. Even though the band is used to playing huge sold out venues in Latin America (notoriously Luna Park in Argentina,) they didn t let the roughly 200 fans in attendance at Thursday s concert water them down. Lead singer Adrián Rodríguez delivered a charismatic and upbeat performance, passionately singing, gesturing and dancing to every song; successfully proving to elevate the audience s energy for most of the show. Band member Diego Rodríguez also chipped in to help carry the show, stealing the attention of some of the females in the audience. Five songs into the concert, lead singer Rodríguez gave his most heartfelt vocals with Ideas, the next single to be released from their latest album A Propósito. Some highlights of the show included fans singing energetically to what seemed like every word of Irresponsables (Irresponsible/Reckless,) a tweaked version of one of their most popular hits Putita (Little Slut,) Y qué? (So What?) and Los calientes (The Sexy Ones.) This was especially true of El Colmo (The Last Straw,) a song that talks about leaving the familiar for the unknown. The most enjoyable number was Yegua (Female Horse/Mare,) a song about careless loving that had the crowd singing loudly over Rodríguez. Oddly enough, the first song out of their two encores was relatively unknown for the audience\u2014no one knew the lyrics or sang along. The second encore, Deshoras (Bad Timing,) the first single released from their latest album, was greeted with familiar nods and enthusiastic smiles. For Babasonicos' more than twenty years of making music, the 18-song set list was a good mix of old and new, lows and highs, obscurities and well-known favorites. Only a few good ones went missing that Thursday night at the Howard Theatre.

The concert itself was great. They really are stellar performers, and they played all the right songs. However, it was only an hour long, and didn't have an opening band but instead 2 hours of a DJ. It started and ended way too late for a weeknight show.

Great sound after 10 minutes. Good choice of songs, perfect performance. I know these guys fill Luna Park and almost any venue in Latin America whenever they play, and there were only 200 people in the audience... but 1:05 was way too short.

Babasonicos played an awesome set that really only missed 2 songs that i would have wanted to hear. everything from the poppy to ballad to heavy rock riffs sounded tight. Lead singer did a great job as a frontman to get the crowd into the show. only wished they would've played a longer det but since many songs are 3-4 minutes they still did about 15 songs including a 2 song encore.

I had a terrible experience with Babasonicos. They actually play way to early and a very short time. The sound system was not as expected either.

This argentinean band represents a serious alternative rock prototype. Not all rock have to be hard, violent, and so macho. There is also room from this 6-guys band with reminiscence of Sandro and the seventies but with his own sound and beats. The leader not only sing very well but also is a showman who can express with his face as many words as with his lyrics. So, if you want to explore this band, be prepared to a real party with a light ball in the roof, sensuality, metro-dancing, but, overall, a strong-well formed latin rock band. If you have time, listen the lyric and you will find a fine poetry and metaphores hiden between beets. Recommendable as one of most influent argentinean band, as was Virus decades ago, making the life easier and happier

Babasonicos brought to houston the latin rock that has been missing in the states. Personally this is one of the best spanish rock bands out there. This was a show that any rocker must have been at.

1. The band played only 45mins; it didnt feel like a "concert". 2. The sound was lame. They should've turn up the master volume! 3. I didn't go to see the first band because I heard their music online and they weren't at the level of Babasonicos. 4. I liked the great idea of selling tickets for other related concerts at the door. I bought two tickets for kinky's show on sept 27th. 5. I think house of blues should put more time in improving the Latin american concerts that's been offered. 6. Chivas reagal on the rocks for $11? That's why i bought only one drink.

I really went to see the opening act Monte Negro as I was quite familiar with them. The show was promoted as "Doors open at 7:30 show starts at 8:30". We arrived with reserved seats at 8:20 and found Monte Negro already playing. I was informed by the bartender that they started around 7:45. Three songs later they were finished!!! I am totally piss*d. Babasonicos was good, very good and I have become a fan of theirs. I am less of a fan of the House of Blues.
