Steppenwolf came to the Ryman Auditorium to celebrate 50 years in the music industry. The music was timeless and the band's performance was tight and sharp. John Kay started the evening with a solo performance. Then, he was joined by the band to continue with such classics as "Ride with Me," "Born to be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride," The Pusher," and more. In the middle of the concert alumni Michael Monarch, Larry Byrom, Bobby Cochran, Steve and Michael Palmer were introduced on stage to take a bow in recognition for their contributions to the band. I was lucky to be there. The music was fantastic. And the acoustics in the Ryman were amazing. They say there is no bad seat in the house. And I believe them.

When my husband was in the Army & I moved to Germany in 1968 I only had their 2 albums in my suitcase to listen to until our household goods arrived, Steppenwolf & The Second. So in 6 weeks I memorized the lyrics to all the songs on those albums. So lots of memories connected to this band. They did not disappoint! John Kay's voice was magnificent. Such a good concert start to finish. We sat in the first row so tons of great photos.

Enjoyed Eric Burdon & the Animals more than John Kay & Steppenwolf. Eric was fanastic, great showmenship, seemed to really be enjoying himself. John Kay is to political.

The whole scenario was pretty cool, the venue was Mo. state fair & there probably have not been that many old hippies in that place @ 1 time since the Ozark Music Festival back in the early 70's! The show was fantastic! It was like a MAGIC CARPET RIDE back to the 60's! VERY COOL!

Steppenwolf was the headliner and John talked a lot and play a lot of way old stuff and then showed videos from the 60s and 70s of the band back then while he sang along with it. We waited nearly an hour and a half to hear Magic Carpet RIde and Born to be Wild as they were the last two songs. Had I known how this was going to be I would not have bought track seats and would have left after Foghat. How could he not tell the crowd was not into it as they were all sitting down! It was sad. It could have been and should have been much better. I would never go back.

It had been 10 years since I last saw Steppenwolf and a good cheap seat was available about two weeks in advance. This time around, there were video screens to go along with the music. John Kay looks as healthy as can be with his voice in top form after fronting his band for 50 years. His explanations in between songs also added to the experience. The newer songs were also good and they played all of the old favorites that I came to hear.

Steppenwolf has always been one of my favorite bands since the early '70s. After 50 years of performing, John Kay still has the voice and the timing and better songs than most of the current bands that started playing in this century.

I have been a fan of John Kay and Steppenwolf for 49 years. Their concerts are always the best, but this one was the 50 anniversary of the band and it was off the charts! Loved every minute. The sound in the Ryman is amazing and there really isn't a bad seat in the house!! Great show!!!! They sound as good now as they did the first time I saw them in 1970!!!! They were showing films from concerts back in the 70's and 80's and they were right in sinc, they haven't slowed down or lost their touch at all. Loved it!!!!!!!!!!

The opening act was John Kay himself doing a solo set of blues songs. The main show consisted of all the hits one expects from Steppenwolf. John Kay made a few remarks before most songs and toward the end of the show introduced several behind the scenes members that have been with the group through the years. A video played behind the band during most songs and it was interesting to see present John Kay sync up with an image of young John Kay. After such a great performance it is hard to imagine what a Steppenwolf show would have been like in their prime.

John Kay & Steppenwolf show was awesome. The show was very tight and put together well. Steppenwolf has lost nothing over the years. A lot of todays acts could learn a lot from this artist. While there was some flash to the show it had its place and did not interfere with the overall flow of the show. The crowd was awesome, well behaved, and respectful of the artist .Kay acknowledged all the members of the band over the years and all of the crew as well as those who helped him over the years Kay was in fine voice and seems to have lost nothing when it comes to performing. Having never seen one of Steppenwolf 's shows I was skeptical at first, having purchased tickets to the show to attend at the recommendation of a friend. It was money well spent.

Being a fan of the music and not being aware of the artist political views was my mistake. This is the first of literally hundreds of concerts I have attended that I left in total disgust I paid to be musically entertained not to hear the political views of some has been performer if these idiots intend on spewing their political views at a show they should include that in the byline. If you support our President DONALD J. TRUMP then stay as far away from this show as you can get.

The first hour was John Kay singing solo .. never heard any of the songs before (boring). The second hour was the band playing loud unfamiliar music. And by the start of the 3rd hour, our patience grew thin and we left knowing we would miss the songs we came to hear. Very disappointing.

I've been a fan of Kay since the late 60's. He's not like the bad ass image portrayed from the Born to Be Wild days. He's acts most personably and he projects a wonderful report with his audience. He introduced all members of the crew, his family, and some former band members. I even chatted with his daughter in the lobby between sets. He opened with an acoustic solo set, which was marvelous. When the band played the volume was just right and it didn't leave me with ringing ears and a headache. The music stood on it's own without the need for a lot of glitz and special effects, although the visuals and graphics were impressive. Played The Pusher for an encore.

First time in my life at the Ryman , place where they discarded Elvis after his only appearance back in 8 or 9 1954 ! I only knew Steppenwolf through the score of EASY RIDER cult movie. They were practically unknown in France. The John Kay acoustic part was not my cup of tea. I enjoyed Steppenwolf show , appreciated their cover of I m movin on and Hoochie Coochie Man.But WHY ending it on the screen with a BB King photo and not a Muddy Waters one ? Of course Born to Be Wild was the MOST. Everyone dancin'. Lot of nostalgia.

The opening performance by John Kay, was a trip throughout the years of this incredible musician/poets career. I've seen John perform solo on many occasions, this was the best. Great show and venue. John Kay opened with a 30 minute acoustic set. One new song and a surprise closing song of Goin' to California from the Sparrow days. The full band set opened with the classic opener Sookie Sookie and finished with Born to be Wild. A large black and silver classic Wolf logo and interesting light and video show really enhanced the program. Previous band members were acknowledged. Only mild disappointment was the single song encore of The Pusher.....would have liked more. A great energetic show by a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame quality band !

The acoustic was not for us. If you are a fan of old blues and/or pre-Steppenwolf you might like this. If we would have known what it was going to be we would have arrived just in time for the main concert. Steppenwolf was awesome, John Kay did not lose his voice at all. The songs we so close to the originals with just enough umph to show that it was live and not lip sung like some pop stars do. The only song they did not do that I wish they had was Pusher.

This show was everything we hoped for. John Kay has been at this a long time and his performance clearly reflected this experience. His voice was still remarkable and the overall sound quality was excellent. The rest of the band was also very tight; you could tell these guys have played together for a long time and the performance was really, really good. I would go back and see this show again. They played an assortment of old and new tunes and again, the vocals were not drowned out by the instruments. My compliments to the sound guys. After all these years, I had nearly forgotten how intelligent and timeless many of the lyrics really are. Overall, a wonderful performance. We had a fine time indeed!!

As a couple who grew up with the 60s-70s movement, we were extremely disappointed! We hoped to have a nice evening listening to their great music instead, we got a constant dose of politics(left-leaning) which we felt was unfair to the fans. I guess some people grow out of their youth and others just remain in the past! Good Luck Kay.

Great mix on the audio. I liked the two warm up bands. All in all a great concert. Well after one of the venues female personnel with a cane and glasses was trying to change our seats to help her seat surfer friends. She was purposely telling me I was in the back instead of the front were I KNOW I BOUGHT THAT SPACE. She finally buckled after I want to see management. Other than that, the seats were staggered perfectly so all rows could see well.

This is Steppenwolf's 50th anniversary tour, and John Kay still puts on a great performance, as does the current incarnation of rest of the Steppenwolf band. Kay. at 72, is still fit and trim, but looking a lot different with shorter hair and without his signature shades (maybe his poor vision as improved to the point where the bright lights aren't as blinding to him as they used to be?). Also very impressed with the huge video screen behind the stage that often showed the Steppenwolf of old performing the same song, and perfectly in sync! Don't miss this show!

First Molly Hatchet came on and started us in the right mood! I've seen all three of these bands before and Molly Hatchet was better the first time I saw them. Then Foghat performed and did a wonderful job. They performed longer than I would have thought with three bands appearing on the same night. But really didn't want them to end. They were better than the other time I saw them. But when John Kay and Steppenwolf come on you remembered why you were hear. John Kay may be older than the last time I saw him - but he was still just as powerful as ever! They made you forget that it was getting late and you just wanted it to continue and continue. We were in the fifth row and could even understand everything that was said. Couldn't have asked for anything more!!!!!

Memories flooded back from the 70s when Foghat took the stage. They played the favorites and put on a great show. Steppenwolf came on and the stage exploded with John Kay's vocals!! They played the songs and sounded just like they did back in the day...so much so that they played films of their old performances while Kay sang to them and matched them word for word! I've never seen anything like it. John Kay's voice was as clear and pure as it was years ago and he gave on point renditions of all of the old favorites. I was blown away! this was my first time seeing both bands even though I'm from their era. I was thoroughly blown away! I'm very glad that they included Columbus on their tour this year...thanks!!

too start out with i would never want to see foghat again the lead singer has a voice that was a high pitch so with his high pitch and the extreme high volume of the music i almost went outside till steppenwolf was to play..don't get me wrong i like a lot of foghat's music just not with the lead singer they have now..Now about john kay & steppenwolf this concert was very good although he sang alot of songs that i haven't heard before his voice has not changed from 30 yrs.ago. When he sang some songs that everyone knew he brought the house down everyone stood up and really got in to the songs. For being 72 years old he was AWESOME..... Would i go to see him again?? O HELL YES!!!!!! I give him 4 stars only because he did not play more of his greatest hits.

Great bargain! The concert ticket is also admission to the fair. Spent a great day walking around the Ohio State Fair & ending it with a concert is the way to do it! The venue is small enough that all seats are good; however, recommend the bleachers over the last few floor seats. The chairs were too close together!

A big fan of Steppenwolf, but never got to see them before. They didn't disappoint. As a former keyboard player from the 60's and 70's, it was great to see a Hammond B3 on the stage with not one, but two Leslie speakers! Ah, the good old days when the organ ruled. I loved the variety of songs they played too and didn't leave out any of their hits. So glad to hear "Snowblind Friend", "The Pusher" and "Monster". Songs that I had always liked but wasn't sure would make it to the playlist. Foghat was okay. Their first and last two songs were good, but the "middle" ones just all sounded alike. Overall, a great concert. Glad I went.

Had seen Foghat before put on excellent show but their entire set was drowned out by the bass drum. I could only hear an occasional word from the vocal due to the volume required by the ever present bass drum. Steppenwolf was much better sound and the show was enjoyable.

Wow what a great concert! Not only did they play their biggest hits but some that I hadn't heard in over 40 years. John still sounds great and the band was right on. The syncing of the old concert footage behind the band was really a great touch! So glad I didn't miss this show.

Was Highly impressed with Both bands tonight. Foghat took me back to those days I played their live album everyday in 1974 and John Kay and Steppenwolf were amazing and so entertaining. Great show and would go see them again anytime. Thanks for the great night.

Steppenwolf has always been one of my very favorite groups. The group has always consisted of great musicians and John Kay is one of the more unique singers/lyricists/and performers of our generation. He has always been very far ahead of his time. The concert was one of the better ones I have ever seen. The band was very solid and Kay still sings and performs as though time has stood still. You had better not miss this show!

what a great time; wish it lasted alittle longer than 1 hour and 15 minutes.... but while in line for a sandwich my wife met the drummer. told him that this was a bucket list trip! HE WAS SO NICE, came over and shook my hand and bullshited for a few...

John Kay & Steppenwolf was an unforgettable concert. I didn't have the opportunity to see the group in concert during their heyday, and was sadly resigned to the idea that I never would. This show was a dream come true. When I first bought the tickets, I was a bit apprehensive, knowing there were no other original members in the band, but the vibe and personality was there in full force. Everyone in the group was excellent. I was a bit late to the concert, but when walking up to the performance space, I heard from a distance John Kay singing "Rock Me" and said, "Yeah - that's the voice." He's still got it. I also appreciated the references that he made to the group's history, especially in the context of those times. Their music is just as relevant today as it was then, which is a little scary (such as "Monster"). I'm so grateful that they came to my town.

My first 8 track tape was Steppenwolf, and after 53 years later I was able to see them. I wish I would have seen them sooner. GREAT show.

As always, John Kay was magnificent and his delivery of Steppenwolf's 60's Anthems was impeccable. The music is as forceful and his performance unbelievable, it makes 45 years disappear!
