The Polyphonic Spree

The Polyphonic Spree

"The Trees Are Getting Harder To Climb:15th Anniversary of The Polyphonic Spree" The Polyphonic Spree began on July 15, 2000 as one man’s desire tohear a sound he dreamed about; before most bands that are often compared in sound and vision to the Spree were even formed. The Polyphonic Spree have traversed the globe several times over, much to the dismay of those that thought the band would never leave its hometown of Dallas, TX. They have appeared at every major music festival and late night television program. The Polyphonic Spree has ranged in size from 13 to 27 members.

This venue leaves a lot to be desired. It's small, crowded, and the acoustics are average at best. The Polyphonic Spree made everyone forget all about that with their positivity and upbeat songs. This band is huge, and every single member adds to the greatness. The Polyphonic Spree is a band you have to experience live.

The Polyphonic Spree is like no other. This was an amazing show from start to finish. I believe I counted 15 people on stage, which added to the phantasic presence & performance as well as the symphonic labyrinth of sounds. To top it off, I had the great pleasure of hanging out with Tim DeLaughter, the lead singer after the show who is an awesome and phantasic person. I will definitely see them again.

It was an incredible show! The band is awesome and the lead singer is phenomenal! Confetti falling throughout the show, and guests were playing with flying balloons too, lots of fun, very festive and highly recommend to friends!

there is really nothing to compare to a polyphonic spree concert for pure joy, musical complexity and crazy bombast. add to that the nostalgia of being in the old Ritz (now webster hall) and you have the perfect show.

I saw the Polyphonic Spree about 8 years ago when they opened for David Bowie in his arena tour, so I was excited to see them in such a small venue as the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. I was not disappointed!! They were even better than before, and the energy in the club was amazing. I would recommend this show to everyone!

Polyphonic Spree is referred to as a Symphonic-Choral Rock Group, but you have to listen and even better see-hear in Concert to get the full experience and try to figure out your own label.. I like the Brass, electronic strings, flutes, lead singer Tim, two drummers, electric guitar and bass. It is a wall of sound, a little bit in the Specter tradition but so much more. What aces it all is a cadre of 6-8 lady singers who look great but also have gorgeous voices. I especially like the full, husky alto sound the gals achieve surrounded by all of the other things going on from Brass to Harp to Flute and rock guitar. Lead singer Tim looked like Charleton Heston's best impression of Moses doing the Ten Commandments when this group appeared at the Historic Synagogue in Washington D.C. in May. David Bowie has helped cheer this group on and if you like Bowie times three, come to hear Polyphonic Spree. hope they come back to D.C. or Baltimore or Annapolis real soon!

Great live act. This is my 5th or 6th time seeing the spree. Missing the older band a bit. Flute anyone?.. What worked for me last time was that the songs were strung together well. Tim chopped up some of these connections and rearranged - didn't always work for my ears. Great energy of course. Go see this band live before you die.

The opening acts were lame and pretty good respectively, but the Spree made up for it. It's really amazing that they can bring that much energy and keep the levels up throughout the whole show. The venue was pretty cool, too--an old Synagogue in DC.

What an experience. So upbeat and fun, from beginning to end. Excellent musicianship. They threw in two Who covers, which was a treat, and an extra encore of "Lithium". Even if you've never heard a note of Polyphonic Spree music, GO. You will be a member of the cult before the evening is over.

Unsure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised with this concert. I knew none of the songs but had a great time. The show has an upbeat, happy go lucky attitude that promises to leave you in a great mood. The numerous artists filled the stage and I enjoyed the eclectic mix of interesting instruments.

A truly original, uplifting concert experience filled with energy, talent, and positivity! Regardless of your mood when you walk in, you will leave singing with a smile on your face. Forget the standard guitar/drums/bass/singer format we've all seen a thousand times over. Full choir to back up the lead vocals, full percussion ensemble, cello, trombone, trumpet, french horn, flute, guitars, piano/keyboards, and more, all blended to unique, musical perfection. Makes for a full-sensory "choral symphonic rock" experience that's impossible not to love if you have any musical sense whatsoever. Even the security guards looked surprised and intrigued by what was unfolding in front of them, and as much as they might have been trying not to, I occasionally caught them with happy grins on their faces. It makes me sad to think that there are people who will never hear this band, let alone see them live. They are the rare type that create instant fans out of those who go to a show having never heard of them before, and life-long fans out of those who have. Favorite moment(s): The climatic opening (don't wanna spoil), or when the whole ensemble froze while the lead singer went around "messing" with them and their instruments, or when they marched from the back to the front of the venue right through the crowd to return for an extensive encore, or how they ended by cutting out/exiting one instrument at a time....or the entire thing???? Opening act: New Fumes. I was not a fan. Great idea combining DJ/looping with live guitar/synthesizer/vocals (all one guy), but he just wasn't any good at it. The visuals on the screen helped a little, but even those left a lot to be desired. Someone else with more talent could definitely take this idea and go far with it though. (Not to mention his super-contrived "i'm so shy and depressed" persona didn't fit at all with the happy energetic mood created by the Polyphonic Spree.)

The Polyphonic Spree is a fantastic band to see live. At the El Rey Monday night, they were magical! Their live performance was both rockin' and rollin'! The energy, enthusiasm, and their overall love to put on a great show shined thru. One minute you are jumping up and down to their version of "Lithium" and the next you are belting out lyrics to "Light & Day." Definitely a band to see whenever they come to town.

I saw Polyphonic Spree in St. Paul, in 2007, it was a fantastic show and I became an instant fan. This show, at Center Stage in Atlanta, I took a friend. Unfortunately, you could not understand the words. I know the music and words as I purchased the CD, but my friend could not. The message of the songs were lost. Show was full of energy, unfortunately, my friend was not as impressed. Please, Polyphonic Spree, work on your sound, instruments overshadowed the vocals.

I've been seeing concerts regularly since the 1990s, and these guys blow me away every time! They have everything... pop singing, rock singing, a lead singer, a choir, rock instruments, string section, percussionist, keyboards, horns! And every show is a party, whether just a celebration of music or full scale with media, confetti and balloons. Leaving their concert makes you glad that you love live music.

First things first: I love the Polyphonic Spree, and Tripping Daisy before them. This is the fifth or sixth time I've seen them live, and probably 5 years or more since the last time. They're artsy, yes. There are a lot of them on stage AND they wear choir robes, yes. Get over it. The music is pure pop. The good kind of pop. Mix the lead vocals with the backing chorus, add in horns, a flute and guitar & bass + and you have the Spree, fully living up to its "polyphonic" moniker. So all that paves the way for what I thought: This was a great show. They rocked. Really rocked. More so, I'd say, than at previous gigs I've attended. The visual show was OK, but I was there for the band. And judging from the rest of the audience, they were too. They worked through singles, album tracks and a new song (or 2?). I would have died and gone to pop heaven had they played some TD tracks, but there's time yet. Singer Tim DeLaughter maybe isn't 1990s nostalgic yet. I left during the end of the 1st and hopefully only encore, only because it was getting late and this was a weekday show. Much love to the Polyphonics.

From begining to end the show is high energy mixed with good vibes and a bit of humor here and there... The entire band (I think there's like 116 of 'em..lol) are super friendly and are more than happy to hang out and chat after the show..Highly recommend. Their shows are also very kid appropriate...dont be afraid to bring a youngster.

There are no words to describe a Polyphonic Spree concert. It is an experience and one that everyone should have. Some people have religion; I have Poly. The positivity and energy that is displayed by Tim and the other members is unparalleled. You will leave feeling refreshed, energized, with a restored sense of love and humanity. If you could transport their message into every being, our world would be more amazing than it already is. I am so thankful they keep coming back to Boston. I have not missed a concert in 10 years! I can't wait until next year (fingers crossed).

This is the third time I have seen the Polyphonic Spree and they have never failed to be a transformative experience. No matter how I feel going into a show the infectious emotional high that Tim DeLaughter and the rest of the band are on picks me up and paints a smile on my face. For days after I ride the joy. The Spree brings happiness and definitely love into whatever venue they are at. If you want to be happy joyous and free, hit up the Polyphonic Spree. They are completely approachable and kind, and they bring the audience into their performance. I cannot say enough about the Spree and their ability to pull even the most cynical and jaded New Yorkers head out of his own ass.

Love the Polyphonic Spree! Was so excited to be able to go. Show start time was sold as 9:00pm. Two starting act later and show start time ended up being 11:00pm... Wasn't too happy about that. I thought the venue was too small for this group, and that they would draw more of a crowd in an early evening larger outdoor venue where they could profile the entire group! I would not see them again in such a small venue, and at such a late hour on a weeknight. Just my opinion.

It was my first time seeing The Polyphonic Spree, and they were everything I had hoped they would be. It was a small venue with a small stage, so the 17 members of the band didn't have a lot of room to move, but they made it work. Crowd sing-along went so well that they rewarded Boston crowd with great rendition of Sweet Caroline. DeLaughter, the colorful, energetic lead singer, really engaged the small crowd, especially during their blistering rendition of Nirvana's Lithium. Awesome night!

This was my fourth PS show and I never leave disappointed. The members are sporting new threads (loved the new looks). Also, the gang played three new songs that will be on their August 2013 release. Loved the sound of new material, Spree with a boost of electronic. I do not want to spoil it for others, but let's just say, after several shows where Tim has teased us with performing Tripping Daisy he not only made good, but blew me out of the water! I am not sure if the sound guy was their guy or in house tech, but a big thanks to him for working out the sound. It seemed like a tough space to get such a large number of mics (vocal and instruments) sounding great. Plus, I got to hear a bonus: He played Air right before the show opened. Kudos to the Air fan!

Polyphonic Spree is a distinctive arrangement of instruments that plays exceptionally well live--the sonic blast of brass, bass, backup singers, and nearly every possible string instrument is a distinctive sound and even a feel as harps, trombones, and bass guitars resonate through your body. It is cliche to say this band must be experienced live, but in this case it really is the truth. The band's theatricality is much more entertaining than witnessing yet another technically masterful band whose performance is based on ironic detachment; I suspect most of us would have a fabulous time with the folks in PS, who are creative, gracious, and understand that much of their appeal hinges on their showmanship selling us on a sound that may never quite capture mainstream taste. That is actually too bad, since these folks are enormously entertaining and the sound is fabulous, and come on, shouldn't every band have go-go-girl backup singers and a harp player?

Polyphonic Spree was great! The show starts off slow as it is mainly geared towards kids but once the spree came out. The music was fantastic and the presentation was amazing.
