The music was enjoyable but did not lend itself to operatic voices. Emilie's voice was the exception. Nellie's voice was extremely difficult to understand... though she was well cast for her acting, movement, and execution of of choreography. I would not recommend it if you are not already familiar with the show.

This musical was exactly as it was years ago and I really enjoyed it.. The songs were all great and exactly as i knew them. The set was good but not really anything spectacular. The voices of everyone were good but I did not really care for the voice of Emile, the plantation owner. His voice was so low and had such a strong french accent I could not understand what he was saying/singing a lot of the time. I loved the song, There is Nothing like a Dame and wished there were more upbeat dancing and singing, but that is not what South Pacific is all about. It was nice to get lost in another time, and experience a slice of life during WWII.

I took my 83 year old mother to see South Pacific... I grew up singing the songs and saw the movie in the old theater in Wolfeboro NH in the 60's... The orchestra was wonderful, and the singing incredibly beautiful - Mom had her hard of hearing headphones on, and was glued to the stage, occasionally singing a line or 2... My dad, no longer living, had been in the Navy in Guadalcanal and New Hebrides before they were married, so this was a very special show for us...

I enjoyed the music, dancing and scenery thoroughly. I found the acting of the two male leads to be ok. The lead, Nelly, was wonderful. As was Bloody Mary. Worth seeing - but not "knock your socks off".

This production of South Pacific suffered from what most road companies suffer from....I thought some of the cast could have been better.....Emile was a good singer but had some problems in the acting dept. Nellie was very good and so was Joe Cable and Luther Billis. The military officers did not appear to be up on their acting abilities. While I am emphasizing the negatives, over all, this is a good production and I certainly recommend it. Perhaps with time, the kinks will iron themselves out and it will be a excellent production instead of just a good one.

They've changed the script and acting a tad bit to make it more contemporary -- making a classical story even more memorable through comedy <3 All the staff were amazing before, during and after the show.

A fresh and lively version of a classic musical that is as relevant today as when it was first performed. The cast was all outstanding. The Hershey Theatre is beautiful, of course, and it's always a treat to see a performance there.

The props were tremendous; the actors were stupendous; all in all a very good play. The Hershey Theatre is comfortable and quite a gem in the town known for its chocolate. Parking is free!! Seats were comfortable; sound was great. We were in the center balcony and our view of the stage was perfect.

Top perfection, both the orchestra and the performers. Their voices were perfection.. all of them. I made my 16 and 20 year old boys go along with my wife and I for "some culture". They both commented on their face book pages how "awsome" it was. They were dazzeled and amazed. They said they were glad the went. So was I. I'd see it again.

If you want to see a show that will leave you singing and tapping your feet go see this show. My daughter and I go at least once a year to Hershey Theatre to see a show. This was the best ever in years! It is one of my favorite to watch on DVD. The main characters performances were unforgettable. Emile and Nellie were just as good if not better than the movie version. They need to make a CD and release it to the public! You will be swooned with Emile's voice, and delighted with Nellies. You can't miss the entertainment of Billis' character either! I will follow this cast for future shows! Thank you all for a wonderful evening!

Great show with a terrific cast. Emile's voice was best I've ever heard in this role. Still a moving experience, although the comic relief is a little dated. If you have the opportunity to see this, don't hesitate.

I thought the production was great.... heard so many familiar songs that I hadn't heard in such a long time. The Orchestra was great. The actors performed very well, especially the two leads. A little wordy towards the end when the sailor was explaining something to the Commanding officer, but overall I thought the scenery, acting, dancing and singing were terrific. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a fun time.

Rogers and Hammerstein usually have wonderful musicals that have terrific music and great story lines. With all the accolades, I had always wanted to see South Pacific on stage. Unfortunately I have to admit that I was disappointed. The lead actress that played Nellie was absolutely fantastic, however she couldn't save the musical from its boring storyline. It's a slow moving musical with only a few great songs. Sadly those songs were in the beginning. With the running time of 3 hours, it was a very long performance at a very slow pace. Miss Saigon would be a better musical to see. I don't believe I will be seeing this again.

This was a spectacular performance of one of my favorite plays. From the venue, Hershey Theater, to the set designs , to the actors and actresses it was a first class performance. My only disappointment was that the production was not sold out, the theater is so easily accessible and is surrounded by great restaurants so even mid- week ,it makes for a very memorable and romantic evening.

The music, scenery and choreography were first class. The voice of the male - lead was so strong, effortless and vibrant. When does the next boat leave for his South Pacific Island? We had watched a "South Pacific" performance from the Lincoln Center on PBS which I believe is the same "roadshow". As we all know, the dynamics of a live show in a theater is the best.

This excellent 1949 musical by the masters, Rodgers & Hammerstein, was superbly performed in this Lincoln Center Theater Production! The singing of lead actor David Pittsinger, as Emile de Becque, was absolutely superb. His powerful bass-baritone voice was clear, strong and truly excellent. Lead actress Carmen Cusack, as Ensign Nellie Forbush, added a smooth, fantastic soprano voice. Their songs together were spellbinding. All of this was complemented by a tremendous cast of 31 with great acting performances and excellent singing. The set was clever and very appealing. The performance by the orchestra was great. All in all an excellent production of an excellent musical. As musicals and musical productions go, it truly does not get any better than this!

Certainly not the best performance of the season at the Auditorium Theater!!! The acting was amateurish at times and I couldn't determine whether the male lead was trying to deliver his lines with a French or an Italian accent??? Also, the lead female had a weak voice. (at least she didn't project well). Will have to think twice before dropping a couple of $100 bills for a "performance" at the Auditorium Theater!!!

We purchased tickets last minute and although our seats were not all in the HC section, we were allowed to move into it once the show began when all seats were not occupied. Mom could see much better and the staff equipped her with a hearing amplifier. It was a special show for our family since mom & dad meet at an officer's ball in Hawaii and Michener came to our family for documentary information (Mom's great uncle wrote several books on the South Pacific heritage). We all thoroughly enjoyed this performance.

The venue is gorgeous! The visual production is excellent. The quality of the company was poor. I mean it was really not good. For the amount of money I paid I would expect high quality performances. The acting was so bad that I literally laughed out loud at some of the lines that were delivered so poorly. I would say this was on par with a community college production. Very disappointed!

I bought my husband tickets as a Valentines day gift. He loves musicals and was very much looking forward to the show. We have always enjoyed most of the events we have seen at this venue. South Pacific however was a major disappointment. The main characters were the understudy's and did not command a decent performance. Emile had a very irritating voice and went back and forth between a French and Italian accent. Nellie just was so-so. They should continue their understudy work indefinitely. We left at intermission as the Theatre was FREEZING! Irregardless of the poor heating/cooling control we probably still would have left as we both were not enjoying the show at all. Major disappointment. and would have to give a lot of consideration before attending another show like this again. Also, did not like the smoking during the show (realizing this was accepted for the era it did not enhance the show).

Such a terrific Broadway play and movie but this performance really fell short. Time duration too long and the characters just didn't fit. The male lead was way too young with an accent that crossed between Italian and French - depending on the dialogue. Hard to understand at times. The female lead had a southern accent which didn't fit with the original character. The best part was the music - which I would have enjoyed by itself - minus the performance. Wouldn't recommend it.

Sat under the balcony-forgot how tight the seating is. The woman next to me sang and hummed every song, the woman in front of me sat forward in her seat the whole play and blocked my view. The sound of the music through the speakers sounded like it was in a hollow can and the actors while very good seemed robotic in their interaction. Not a satisfying experience for the $65 seat.

I brought my grandma because she had mentioned that she would love to see it. Since she had introduced me to the musical when I was young, I knew the story and thought it would be great to take her. We both enjoyed in immensely. The cast was very talented and it was nice to share this experience with my grandma.

While the acting was good the sound quality was exceptionally poor. It's a good thing that I knew the story and the songs or I would have gotten NO enjoyment out of the play at all. When other guests and I complained about the sound to the ushers they stated that it was Great on Friday but there were many complaints on Saturday.

The sound quality of the first two numbers was very poor. Fortunately this situation improved adequately for the balance of the performance. Great music and songs!

Enjoyed this alot......have been to musicals before, but first time for my date, and she was just mesmerized.....both of the people in the lead parts had great singing voices, the Rogers and Hammerstein music was very enjoyable.......

The production was mid-level in my opinion. I have seen a few shows on Broadway and this wasn't at the same level. I thought the performers were very good, but just not up to that really amazing standard of current Broadway shows.

I was surprised at the crowd. It seemed like less than half of the house. The lead singers were outstanding. Both were goosebumper/shivers good!! A top quality production of this classic. Thanks for bringing it to Detroit. My date was a singer and she thoroughly enjoyed the show!

I really enjoyed this production overall, but would only make a few comments on what would have made it better. The volume seemed to be a little low, and we were sitting near the front on the main floor. I was wondering if the sound was being projected to the upper seats and turned down for the people in front? Also the main actors needed to be a little more animated when they sang and performed. I felt that Emile and Nellie needed to be more expressive and project their voices more. I was really impressed by Lieutenant Cable- his voice and acting. The orchestra was really amazing!

While I hold the musical itself dear to my heart, the cast didn't seem incredibly strong. Most of the performers had average voices and didn't seem incredibly enthusiastic to be on stage. It felt more like a local theater show than a traveling company performing at the Fox. Overall, a decent show, but not particularly memorable.
