Kathleen Edwards was good. She was personal and intimate. She lost the audience at the end. It was a little tough at Webster Hall with the "80's" prom going on...You could hear the music that was playing from the other room. Disappointing.

After a 4 year hiatus, Kathleen Edwards moved backbone concert to America and gave a fun, intimate concert at Birchmere in Va. as Part of the Canada 150 celebration. Sang tunes from all her CDs as well as a few new ones and a cover two.

What a great show! The sound was awesome. I loved how Hannah Georgias opened and then shared the stage wtih Kathleen Edwards later in the night. Both the faster and slower songs really showed Edwards' range as a performer. Her set list was fantastic, and she played the best song I've heard in the last five years, Goodnight, California. Great work.

She was strong. Found her to have a bitter edge towards men however. Did blow me away.

Kathleen Edwards is definitey underrated. We should be hearing her music on most of the radio stations. She is a truly an artist vocally as well as an instrumentalist. Edwards was very entertaining and had rapport with the audience. Variety Playhouse is such a great venue for that!

If Neil Young and Lucinda Williams had a kid, it would be Kathleen Edwards. Of course, the kid would have to develop the edginess that can only come with touring in a Chevy Suburban for a year. There's absolutely no pretentiousness in her music or her show. Every song is a story, and not all of them are happy ones. But they're all masterfully told, and Edwards holds nothing back in the telling. She throws straight from the shoulder, and it's a knockout every time. She's fierce, but not at the expense of being closed off -- something that was enhanced by seeing her in a small venue. She engages with the audience, makes them part of the performance, and doesn't insult their intelligence. There's an honesty in Edwards' music and in her performance that if you don't love it, you may be intimidated by it. But you won't fail to respect it. Even if she is a Leafs fan. ;-)

Such a terrific show. Was just Kathleen with Jim Bryson and Gord Tough, each on guitar, and Jim handled keyboard now and then. Sera Cahoone joined for percussion on Back to Me and Change the Sheets. Last song Sidecar they performed off-mic at the front edge of the stage. Kathleen Edwards is so rocking great, people. You really should totally love her.

We love Kathleen and have been following her when she comes to the Birchmere. We couldn't help but pick up on her extreme sadness this time. Even her band mates didn't seem too happy to be there. We will see her again, but hope she is more upbeat next time.

First time seeing Edwards live, and was not disappointed. Flawless musicality and vocals of both her and her band members with wonderfully emotive performances. Show tastefully peppered with hilarious stories and sassy banter with crowd members. Fantastic!

Show was great! I'm a new K. Edwards fan and so this was first live view. She and the boys put on a solid show. Beautiful voice, haunting songs. And she talks it up on all sorts of subjects with the crowd. Don't let Kathleen's "Ann of Green Gables" appearance fool you, she knows how to work a crowd. Lots of fun. Oh, and other than parking challenges at BMH,the venue is a new favorite for me!

Perhaps it was the Senators loss just before the show that seemed to dim the group s enthusiasm (minus her bounding gleefully onto the stage at the opening) from many previous shows of hers that I ve seen (including a raucous good time at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet, MA a while back), but the show went on, the crowd loved her and gave her space to rail and reveal. Though at times during the show, she seemed preoccupied with some personal issues that have been bothering her (for some time, it would seem), Kathleen and band put on another excellent show in support of her equally excellent Voyageur album. From what she has described as some gruelling touring that has caused her vocal concern, I'm glad she decided to keep the Boston show on the books after having to postpone some others. I wasn't hearing the "problems" she was describing with her voice as I thought she sounded strong and confident from the outset, though she may have convinced herself that her voice was faltering as the show progressed, as I noticed some minor vocal hiccups. But that's rock and roll (and could be allergies - I've had an oyster in my throat for a couple of weeks) and she still killed everything she sang; she has such a wonderful, expressive voice. I might suggest that the yelling/screaming she does in a couple of places for emphasis be toned down to preserve her vocals if she s really concerned that she s losing parts of her range, but she is a rocker at heart and the catharsis is a hard thing to give up. A Soft Place to Land and For The Record stood out for me, but she and her mates could rock the phonebook. Both guitarists are talented and played some clean, dynamic leads without showing off. When Kathleen gets more comfortable with her unarguable talent as a singer and songwriter and her natural beauty (I personally love frizzy hair though my wife backs Kathleen's perspective), maybe she won t sweat the anxieties of life so much and just relax and enjoy her ride as a very talented human being. She has a long road ahead of her and a lot of fans that hope she carries on. And there s always next year for the Senators (and Bruins).

Amazing show! Loved it!!! The only bad part was when the base started coming through the walls from the other event going on at Webster Hall. It disturbed the quiet nature of her last song.

Miss Edwards, the Belle of Ontario, is an amazing singer, songwriter and performer. She put on a terrific show with her amazing band. If she comes to your town, put on your best shoes and head on down. Thanks Kathleen and also to your fine cohorts.

I listen to Kathleen Edwards recordings because they are interesting and/or pretty. I didn't expect that her music would convert to one of the best live music experiences I have seen a a few years. She rocks hard. She is extremely confident and it was nice to see her having such a good time. The music is beautiful and complex. The musicianship is tops. Kathleen's personality matches her music.

You wouldn't have known that Kathleen had cancelled several gigs due to vocal strain and fatigue. She sounded great and so did her stellar band. She played most of the latest cd, Voyageur and embellished greatly on that cd's sonic textures with dynamic, extended guitar solos and jams. The soft songs where quiet, beautiful reflective tales of romance gone bad and the aftermath of lost love. The hard songs were, well, the same thing, but on 11. See this tour, she may never break into the mainstream like she deserves too, but it doesn't mean she's not a masterful storyteller and musician.

Decent bar band but nothing special. Just not unique enough to make it. The slow acoustic stuff was depressing. The more intense electric songs were like high school attempts at Neil Young.

Kathleen Edwards and her band were amazing. Opening act Hanna Georgas was great as well; I'm sure she made a lot of new fans. Webster hall is a great venue to see a show, just the right size for a concert: intimate and yet large, with great sound (in the 1950s and 60s, RCA Records used it as a recording studio, the room sounds that good).

Kathleen was terrific, talented musician and songwriter with plenty in her catalog to play from. Only wish it could go on another set or at least 6 more tracks for a nice even 20 tunes. Couple of instances of "too much info" of her personal life... RE: shoe sizes, Xanax etc etc. but that's just as well since she lets you into her world which is one of deep emotion, playful, euphoric, powerful to one extreme and lonesome, sensitive and some sadness underneath it all at the same time. Seeing her play live you can feel what she feels in the way she belts out each track giving her audience access to her feelings and experiences that inspired those songs in the first place. I will go see her whenever she comes to town.

The venue was the perfect setting for Kathleen and her band. The music mix was perfect from "A soft place to land" to my favorite "Asking for flowers and the peppy number Sidecar. Great evening!

We usually don't complete these reviews, but had to for this show since we loved it so much. My husband and I drove from Eugene for this show and it was totally worth it! I have been a fan for years since living in Nashville and love the passion in her lyrics and her voice, however seeing her in person made those same songs come to life even more. She sang with such conviction...in her performance of 'going to hell' her voice made me feel her anger and emotion...i was amazed. i knew it would be a good show, but it exceeded my expectations. it is so refreshing to spend an evening at a show watching a performer who seems humble, down to earth and "about the music"... thank you Kathleen Edwards for such an amazing evening.... if you ever get a chance to see her, please do...this is music.

I couldn't imagine taking the time to write a review for anything but a completely magnificent show, and Kathleen Edwards at the Aladdin was exactly that. It's easily in my all-time top ten shows, and that's out of quite a few. I've been paying very close attention to Edwards' music for several years, and the progression of her songwriting and music was fully reflected in this show. She played the full scope of her repertoire, and every single song was a joy. Her songwriting ranges from gut-wrenching, poignant storytelling (Six O'Clock News, Asking for Flowers), to snarky rock (Cheapest Key, I Make the Dough), and a lot in between. Her musical range is equally broad. She's commonly found in the alt country section, but that's more than a bit limited for her overall catalog. There's the dreamy, soaring, lyrically intimate Goodnight, California, that becomes an instrumental tour de force powered by her evocative violin after the lyrics have ended. Then there's Change the Sheets, and Back to Me that rock solidly on their respective albums, but blow the freaking roof off live. The fact that everything she played at this show was either bigger and more powerful, or more heart-clutching and beautiful than on her finely crafted albums, was most surprising and pleasing. What Edwards does masterfully, whatever the song, is wrap you in a completely encompassing mood. This happens readily on her albums, and the band she has on this tour is capable of everything she has accomplished in the studio, and energy you can't get anywhere but live. Song by song, she has torn out my guts, made me laugh for the hundredth time, made me cry every single time, reflect on my own life and everybody else's, and blown off the top of my head. This show had every bit of that. A posting about the show on Facebook said "they saw grown men weeping." I readily cop to being one of them, and I was also laughing with joy, completely satisfied, and exhausted. I've been going to shows for decades, and there have been lots of really good ones. There have been far fewer that transcended being a musical event and put me, for lack of any better term, in church, in touch with the things you seek but, most days, don't find. This was one of those shows.

This was a dream come true to see her in concert. She was so engaging with the audience, such a real, raw artist, and a force of nature of a woman. The venue was intimate but big enough to get a lot of energy going. Kathleen rocked it!

One of the best shows I've seen in a long, long time. Kathleen Edwards has a great voice, a great band, and she's a hell of a guitar/violin player to boot. Her songs are really amazing and really hit the mark. Her enthusiasm is infectious. The opening act, Hannah Georgas, who also sang backup during Kathleen's show, is wonderful. I can't wait for her new album to be released!
