David Broza plays a mixture of israeli, flamenco, and american music all with incredible guitar work. He played a solo set that was fascinating in the stringwork and with a passion that few performers can give.

It's a real loss to anyone in the D.C. area who missed David Broza at the Birchmere this Sunday night in mid-June 2010. It was a dream concert. He seemed to relish the intimacy of ithis venue Broza's performance was one we will not forget for a lifetime. He began by highlighting songs from his new album of Townes Van Zandt's poetry. The album represents a pretty daring new direction for him. These new songs cradle V.Z.'s briliant, somber, haunting poetry, with its occasional incisive flashes of humor, within Broza's own strong, melodic, engaging music -- music that makes you move. The combination runs the gamut from melancholy to a positively giddy merriment. Van Zandt's lyrics are sung quietly -- sometimes almost in a whisper -- against the insistent but gentle pulse of Broza's idiosyncratic flamenco-folk-rock guitar in a new style he calls "Country West Bank." The songs honor Van Zandt and grieve his loss (especially in the instrumental that ends the set). Nevertheless, the music provides not merely a vehicle to present Van Zandt's poetry, but to affirm its permanence and rebut the poet's hopelessness. This accomplishment is undoubtedly intentional, created not only by the unstoppable rhythmic pulse of the music, but by the effect of Broza's fingers and nails picking the strings in the flamenco style. Even as the listener is aware of grieving, his spirit is drawn upwards with Broza's strings as they intwine their lovely melodies with the poetry. Both celebration and mourning are delicate matters, making a more rewarding experience each time these songs are heard again. Having introduced his new songs, Broza gave the audience far more than anyone might have expected who has not seen this incredibly energetic performer in person. He captured the audience with wry tales of his travels to the village of Broza in Spain. He was indefatigable and generous in responding to requests from the audience for other English songs as well as some of his loveliest Hebrew and Spanish ones, including Estuve Aqui, one of my favorites. He demanded from his guitar all it could give, just as Broza demands it from himself. What they both gave - this man and his guitar -- made me heartsick that I couldn't just take it all away with me and replay it over and over and over . . . . . - If you missed this performance, be sure to watch for David Broza. You needn't speak English or Spanish or Hebrew or Arabic -- if you have eyes and ears you cannot help being transported by any live performance of David Broza. How can it be that these songs are not played on radio. There are others (Norah Jones comes to mind) who don't follow the customary path to fame in the U.S. Broza is already vastly celebrated in Israel and in Spain.

A friend had given me a David Broza CD to listen to about 9 years ago. After listening to the music I couldn't give the CD back, luckily my friend said it was okay he had more. Although the CD I was given was sung in Hebrew which neither my wife or I understand we fell in love with the sound of the music the same way we like Brazilian and latin music but don't speek those languages either. To my surprise most of the concert and David Broza's new CD is in English. Broza put previously unpublished poetry by Townes Vanzant to music. The energy and love for playing that broza brings to the stage is really unmatched. He really enjoys preforming and it comes right out from the deepest part of him. His Guitar is a flamenco style with practically the whole face covered with pickguard and he usses the flamenco style percussion and finger picking with mastery. He tells stories about the songs he plays and has a genuine want and cute way of telling the audience what the music is about. He spoke alot about how he and Townes Vanzant got to know eachother. The exuberance and virtuosity of Broza's preformance left me astounded and singing the music I herd in my head. I loved it.

David performed songs from his new CD at the Birchmere last night. He set to music some of Townes Van Zandt's unpublished poems. Lovely to hear David, one of Israel's most celebrated musicians, capture the country western and folksy nature of the poetry with his music. The crowd really warmed to David's greatest hits, which have become classics in Israel. One of the highest energy performers on the stage today. Beautiful music. Beautiful man.

Great performer! What a guitar player! - sounds like a whole orchestra in front of you, with all the fine nuances. And when you add those beautiful songs and the incredible way he plays with his voice, it becomes a masterpiece! Amazing songs, very talented singer/songwriter, great stories in between songs, and what an energy! Hugh Hugh artist!
