This was the fourth time I have seen Vienna now and she really is incredible. The Carriage House is a very small and intimate venue and it was my first time there. I attended the 6 PM show, as she was following up with a 9 PM show. Vienna had the multi-talented Alex Wong (from Paper Raincoat) with her, as usual. He plays countless instruments and even sings quite well. They did not have a set list, so they ended up putting it together as they went along. Her voice was as angelic as ever and she and Alex were both in top form. She played a lot of songs from her excellent new CD "Inland Territory" and also some of her earlier songs like Gravity, Harbor, and 1 Br/1 Ba. She played two encore songs, and the final one was a pianoless version of Soon Love Soon, where she came out to the front of the stage with Alex. She even had time to sign autographs for fans after the show. So, I got to meet her for the first time and get a CD insert and my ticket autographed. She is a sweetheart for sure. If you are into the Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos music genre, I can virtually guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy Vienna. I will see her every time I possibly can when she is performing in the SF area.

This is the third time I've seen Vienna Teng live, and as good as her CDs are, her live shows are even better! She's engaging and clearly draws energy from the crowd, and it's great to watch her juggle electric piano and synth box. It felt like a smaller, more intimate venue than it was because she, and as far as I could tell everyone in the crowd, were so psyched to be there.

This is the 3rd time I've seen Vienna Teng and Alex Wong in concert and I was fortunate to be able to see both shows on Saturday. Once again I am amazed by their talent and am especially impressed by Vienna's vocals and Alex's creativity on percussion. It was nice seeing them in a small venue like the Carriage House at Villa Montalvo. Vienna and Alex's musical talent and anecdotes pleasantly complement each other, making for an unforgettable evening. The audience was on their feet in both shows, clapping, foot stomping, and singing along. Vienna and Alex were available to meet and chat with fans after each show, signing autographs and patiently posing for numerous photos. I was pleasantly surprised that Vienna remembered me and my son from her last show in Santa Cruz and she made me feel even more special by honoring a request I had made earlier in the evening. Vienna Teng's voice, poetry, and chord arrangements hit the core of my being. I am a true fan and I highly recommend this event to people of all ages!

By her own admission a NYC transplant from the west coast with "a deep love for the states in-between," Vienna Teng's music reflects an equally broad spectrum of style. Her fresh lyrics are made even more poignant by her incredible command of the piano; she is fearless enough to transpose and perform an already vocally difficult song, on the spot, yet comfortable enough on stage to chat with her audience about how it went.

Vienna Teng and Alex Wong form a fabulously fun and formidable duo, as always! Their spirit of play and improvisation, and their encouragement of audience participation make each and every concert a unique and rewarding experience. The only down side to all of this is it feels like such a shame to miss even one!

Vienna's performance was great! Prefer the full piano to the keyboard as it is easier to really hear her wonderful voice.

The place was so hard to find and we ended up 5 mins late. But the place was really pretty and the theater had a very cozy feel to it. I loved her voice and now I'm a fan of Alex as well. I wished the concert was a bit longer though because I can't hear enough of her beautiful voice.

I have seen Vienna perform in various formats (duo, trio, quartet or with a full band) a number of times (at least eight) since 2004. Don't go expecting a rock concert or while heavily under the influence, because in whatever format this young woman's performance will demand your full attention and faculties. Her musical and lyrical talents are amazing and when she chooses to add a "cover" to her performance she always adds her own touches to the piece, bringing it new life. In short, I highly recommend seeing her perform if you have the chance. She presents songs for the mind and soul. I'm sure yours will be touched, and moved, as mine always are.

I wasn't familiar with Vienna Teng's music, but bought tickets for her concert at the recommendation of a friend. What a surprise; her music isn't like that of anyone else. She clearly loves to have fun with creating music in various ways. Her encore: a mashup of an Eminen wrap and B. Withers "Ain't No Sunshine..." was unusual and beautiful.

Vienna, Alex Wong & Jordan Hamlin were simply amazing. The sound was incredible both on stage and in the house (such that when I talked with Alex after the show he raved about how good it was for the performers, saying that they "didn't have to think about the notes were were playing, so it just flowed tonight"). The music these three produce from their many varied instruments (from guitar notes on drum pads, a variety of keyboards for Vienna, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, clarinet, french horn and even plastic cups! - just to mention some) is mind blowing... you'd think there were far more folks on stage than just the three. Vienna's new album, "Aims," was heavily featured in the setlist and performed exquisitely throughout, but Vienna tossed in a few of the older songs for good measure and then brought the house down at the conclusion of her encore with a killer solo mash-up cover of "Ain't No Sunshine/Lose Yourself." Yes, Bill Withers and Eminem combined! Who else would dare attempt it, never mind pull it off? In short - this show is a must see! Don't miss them if you have the chance....

My first Vienna Teng show! Very excited about it. However the show planning wasn't completely clear. It was a co-show with Emerson Hart, meaning that he did the first 1 hr session and followed by VT. Many of us didn't know this planning and we were wondering "who is this guy"(sorry Emerson..) and figuring if we were in the wrong room. VT is great, she did many new songs. Just wished she could perform some "older" songs" from warmer stranger since that's the album got me into her world

If intelligent quality music is your thing, then Vienna Teng is a must see. The clarity and purity of her voice in addition to her masterful musicianship provides a truly rewarding concert experience. If you have never heard of her, then I strongly suggest you access some of her latest album tunes (AIMS), from the internet first. While this will provide a glimpse of her capability, seeing her produce the music in person, is not only remarkable, but exceedingly entertaining.

I had never been to the Royale and I was very pleasantly surprised by the venue--apparently it's a Latino nightclub generally and it's very nicely appointed. We nabbed seats on a leather sofa tucked into a little alcove against a wall. If I could see every show snuggled into a sofa I would be very happy. The opener was Vienna's producer who was a mix of folky guitar and self-made electro-beats. He and another woman joined Vienna on a number of songs so it was kind of like seeing a little band. Vienna's voice is amazing and she is so comfortable on stage. It was a really lovely show.

Vienna said a lot of really nice things about fitting in at Ann Arbor, loving the program she's in, and feeling so at home in such a musically-oriented community. She did say she had caught "the plague going around the business school, which is eating away at my high notes," but she still turned in a phenomenal performance. She used this really cool looping device attached to the piano. She would spend maybe a minute recording different sounds (tapping on the mic, snapping, brushing her hands together, singing a few notes) which would be looped around at different times through the song (she's turn the different sounds on at different points) so she could sort of harmonize with herself. Her voice, even with a cold, was so beautiful it sent chills up my spine. I hope she'll play again in Ann Arbor soon, maybe at The Ark, so I can catch another performance!

She walks out on stage so relaxed that you feel like you're in her living room with her 1,000 closest friends. She tells stories, apologizes for what allergies are doing to her vocal range tonight, and invites the audience to sing along---which we do. But the real wonder is her piano playing and her songs. She has a gorgeous voice, and writes intelligent songs about love, politics, gay marriage, annoying neighbors, and her grandmother. All with this amazing charisma and charm that never seems forced, always seems to spring effortlessly from her soul. She is strikingly humble for someone so talented, which only makes her more impressive and endearing. I am sure most of the men in the audience are in love with her, and I imagine a good portion of the women are, too. What a talent we have here in Ann Arbor!

Talented and amazing singer, piano player. So in control and a real crowd pleaser. While very inspiring and captivating performing most of the show alone, the addition of the four U of M students on strings & drums turned the show into a fun and delightful experience. The Fortune Cookie song was hilarious.

I have seen Vienna three times and she is simply amazing and gets better each time. Having Alex with her for the show was a real bonus. His percussion and support makes her music come that much more alive. At the end of the day, her incredible piano skills and vocal range/power simply move you. I am thankful to be a fan since she began. Please return to NC soon.

We've loved Vienna since first hearing her 7 years ago an she just keeps getting better and better. Collaborating and playing with Alex Wong seems to have pushed expanded her musical comfort zone and created some very interesting results. I can't wait to see what she does next.. Alex was fun to watch during the show - I don't know how he controls each hand and foot individually playing different instruments, but it's amazing. A really talented duo, and I'll look forward to seeing them again. The Carolina Theater was a terrific arena for the show.

I was totally stoked after this concert. I absolutely adored the show that Vienna and Alex put on. I even enjoyed the opening act (Matt Duke). It was a refreshingly new concert for me and it was probably the best I've ever seen. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone and would love to see them again myself! I had a blast!

This is my second time seeing Vienna, and the first seeing her with Alex. Numerous favorite songs of mine were played, as well as some which are likely to become new favorites in the future. The skill with which they used all the tools available to them (particularly the live capturing of samples which were then integrated into the song) was masterful. It was an evening well spent, and I came away with a huge smile on my face.

Vienna and Alex's music was, as expected, spectacular. We got introduced to two new songs (one by Alex, and one duet). These are so new that neither of has a name yet! I'm less ecstatic about the opening act (Matt Duke), but he was quite good, and quite funny. As it happens names did figure extensively in his performance, starting with his last name and ending with his closing story of the Ft. Wayne, IN controversy. (Harry Baals Government Building, for anyone curious) The nice and not necessarily guaranteed aspects are more related to the location: The theatre itself is a gorgeous, 1920s-era building, with a lot of the interior accents preserved from that time. I also have to give credit to the city of Durham -- the parking garage right across the street offered very cheap ($2) event parking, something that plenty of other locations sorely need.

I went to this show not knowing a lot about Vienna Teng or her opening act The Paper Raincoat. I was pleseantly surprised at the talent and quality of the music! Vienna Teng is fabulous. So talented and composed. Her voice is so clear and flawless, and she is an absolutely incredible pianist. I loved her! The Attuck's Theater is absoultely gorgeous. The old timey feel makes for a great venue. Much different from any modern venue. It is wonderfully restored in a way they makes it new and fresh, but still has the soul of an old, 1900s theater. It is small enough so that any seat is a good seat. The acoustics and the quality of the sound system was stunning. You could clearly hear every instrument with unbeleivable quality, unlike other venues where it is so loud and mixed together, that either the volcalist is overpowered or everything is all jumbled. This was such a different and great experience! I loved every moment of this show! It was beyond words!

What a surprise to find these engaging artists! The opening act, The Paper Raincoat, was fresh, intriguing, and brilliant. The tight harmonies and playful lyrics were like unto a Simon & Garfunkel pairing, reinvented for the modern taste. Alex Wong's ability to sing, play an instrument with each hand and one foot while keeping time with the other foot revealed his brilliance--and was a delight to watch. Amber Rugarth's joy exudes from every word she sings. We dashed to the lobby to purchase their CD at intermission. Vienna Teng is real--in the sense of being untainted by musical success. She performs with the heart and skill of a trained, passionate musician, but one whom you believe could be your friend. Her back stories enriched her performance. No silly stage theatrics here to cover for shallow musical quality. I'd jump at the chance to see both acts again.
