Rachael Yamagata

Rachael Yamagata

RACHEL YAMAGATA IN CONCERT:Indie singer-songwriter and critical darling Rachel Yamagata is nothing if not fearless. Over the past two decades Yamagata has established herself as one of the most fiercely original voices in contemporary pop music with her increasingly ambitious recordings and fiery live performances. In concert she holds nothing back, delivering her poetic lyrics with unbridled passion and wrenching every last drop of emotion out of deeply personal songs like "Over" and "Nobody." A talented multi-instrumentalist, Yamagata moves fluidly between piano and electric guitar in concert, conjuring an ever-evolving array of textures and moods to suit her dynamic compositions.

The Rachael Yamagata concert at the Birchmere was beyond amazing. The venue was perfect for her style of music- intimate, cozy, and a bit sultry. Her voice was as perfect as ever and her interaction with the audience made the show that much better. Most of her music was off her new album, Chesapeake, and was phenomenal. After the show she came out and signed autographs, took photos, and talked with her fans. It was the perfect night! It wouldn't let me say this under the seats section: There are tables of 8 setup throughout the space and you are able to order food, beverages, and alcohol while you watch the show. We had dinner and some beers and the food, while expensive, was really tasty.

This was the 3rd time I've seen Rachael Yamagata at the Birchmere. She first opened up for Mandy Moore (yes, that Mandy Moore), then was the headliner the last 2 times. This most recent performance was easily her best. The songs she played from her new album were fantastic and she also sprinkled in her notable songs from her earlier albums. She seemed much more energized and rejuvenated compared to her previous 2 performances. The backing band was also great.

The set was around 1.5 hours, but she spent another hour attending to her fans all of whom wanted a picture with her. They then wanted to reminisce about some show they'd seen that she barely remebered. But she feigned elation as the good trooper she is. But the show and her band were terrific and she has a harder rock edge than ever. Nice show by a great entertainer.

First off, I loved the new Brighton Music Hall (formally the old harpers Ferry). They really did a nice job with the room. Thought Rachel's songs were boring.. Brooding, moody songs that after awhile all sounded the same. Her lively tunes weren't too bad but they were far & few between. She should of opened up for Mike Viola instead of it being the other way around.

The El Rey was a cozy theatre that allowed close connection with the performer. Rachael Yamagata was amazing. She sang 13 songs with a live band and had two opening performers. I especially liked Adrien Reju even though the second performer want quite my cup of tea. However, he was good as well- just not my preferred style of music. Overall the show was great.

I'll get to the point... I really love Rachael Yamagata! She's amazing... But it took the show forever to get started. The first opening singer was amazing and had the voice of an angel.... Following her was another 20 plus minute break only to be disappointed by the second opening act who was funny but not worthy of making the audience wait. In fact, it was a let down, Then yet another break before the final act started at 10:20. I would have preferred a lot more singing and less talking. Letting the audience yell out more than a few times breaks up the flow of the music!!! Bottom line.... Not cool having to wait 2 1/2 hours for opening act!!

Seeing Rachael Yamagata live is simply a joy. She's so funny, real and cool, not to mention a phenomenal song writer and musician. She played a good mix of new songs and threw in a coulple of her older hits. "Be Your Love" is so timeless and heartbraking, it makes me nostalgic for my early years in NYC. This was my first time at Music Hall of Williamsburg, it's by far the best venue I've been to in recent years. It's spacious, and well organized, bonus points for built in risers on the balcony so you don't have to crush against the railing. The downstairs lounge is cool and relaxed with clean bathrooms.

Rachael Yamagata has a fullness, a roundness to her voice that slides around in a sultry and soulful way such that you get lost in the reverberations and the semi-intimacy of the Music Hall of Williamsburg only helped that feeling. She has a way of making heatbreak and the loss of love seem not so bad as long as you listen intently to the echoing sounds inside yourself as she sings.

The venue seats about 500 and is essentially a big black box. I was skeptical about the acoustics of the space for an intimate venue for a singer-songwriter artist. I was very impressed by both the space and the artist! It worked in every respect. Table seating was comfortable and relaxed. Rachael has a wonderfully powerful presence with a performance that bares her heart and soul. It was a real joy to hear both the soft touching acoustic moments as well as the hard rock-n-roll riffs of her great guitar accompanists! Can't wait to see her here again!

She strikes a universal chord- figuratively, literally. She's self-deprecating but is still able to draw us all in and share in her creative expression of love and loss. It's like she's Emo, yet Hopeful. I love her scratchy, gritty, voice, I love the diversity of style while staying within her genre, I love her personality and how she's able to connect with the audience. I loved the show!

Obviously she is a very talented singer and songwriter, but the concert itself was kind of a snoozer. My date was falling asleep and we ended up leaving before it ended. Maybe she was having an off night, but it just felt like it lacked energy.

Rachael doesn't disappoint, even when she feels ill. Her talent is raw and talent palpable. I could have done without the obnoxious fans from Zanesville, who cut the show short because they talked to her from the stage the whole time. I'm fairly certain a few hundred fans wanted to gag them.

Opening act was entertaining. Mike Viola was up next. He talked and talked and talked. When he did play it was okay. Rachel finally made it to the stage. When she sang it was very good. But a drunk girl up front couldn't quit talking. This ate up half the set. 11:00 cut off time is ridiculous.

Are you thinking of seeing Rachael Yamagata in concert? Let me help - that's a yes! The Record Bar venue was intimate - mostly standing room only. For those in attendance, Rachael played songs from her new album, but also played some old favorites. She has great chemistry with the audience and her voice sounds just like it does on her records. Amazing show!!!

Rachael Yamagata and band put on a fantastic show. Though the venue was small, I was worried she would be decapitated by the bassist as she sat at the keyboard, they pulled off a world class show; Talent and emotion in droves. Usually, I drive home from a show wishing I had designed the set list, this night I left very content. They hit it all. I've been a fan for years and was inspired by the show.

Rachael has an amazingly beautiful voice and makes music that could easily be from any decade from the 60s on. It's cool how she's managed to get big, without getting big somehow. She played a lot from her newest album, but sang tried and true from Happenstance.

Rachael tore the roof off of this teeny venue, and stuck around for autographs and conversation with each person! She played a great selection of old and new songs and really got the crowd involved. Her opening gig was fantastic, and she played for quite a while considering. While the venue was a little hard to find, it was well worth it when you walk in to find your favorite artist literally within reach. A great show from a fantastic performer!

I liked Rachel, but the show started LATE. Then we were forced to listen to someone in his band play. He was awful. And I mean AWFUL. Then when he was done, after 45 minutes of his abismality, we were forced to WAIT for a half an hour before Rachael even came out. Like she was the queen of what???? She wasn't worth the wait. I like her stuff, but not at the price I had to pay. We were there to see HER, I paid TOP dollar for primo seats. I'm really insulted by the ego and disrespect.

Before this concert date was announced, sorry to say, I never heard of Rachael Yamagata. She was very good though. Sang strong and enthusiastic. But Mike Viola was the real star of the show for me... for us (my family). I have enjoyed Mike's music for years, thru the Candy Butchers to his solo stuff, to his work with various other artists, like Bleu and Kelly Jones. Mike is a true artist. When you see him in person... live... he is exactly what you would hope he would be. Honest. Passionate. And just a nice guy. He did his set and then went to the back of the place to be where his merch was being sold. We went back there and talked with him for at least 10 minutes. Just the nicest guy you would want all your musical interests to be. Cant wait to see him again! We will be right there in the front of the line.

I wanted to see Rachel Yamagata live because I have become familiar with several songs from her last album that I like very much. I did not know that she has just released a new album until a few days before the concert. So I was disappointed that I did not know most of the songs she played. The ones I did know were excellent and some of the new stuff is good, but much of it drones on too long and is based too heavily on instrumental parts rather than her voice. The real disappointment was the opening act, Mike Viola. He is also a member of Rachel's band. He has a good voice and is a good accoustic guitarist, but boy is he the worst lyricist I have heard in a long time. He wrote all of his songs and the melodies were okay, but they were so literal that there was audible laughter in the crowd. Then Rachel fawned all over him as a brilliant artist and one of the best song writers out there, so her stock fell because of that. If he is new to her entourage, his influence might set her back.

First, I can't thank the staff at Triple Rock Social Club enough for accommodating me and my cane. :) I have been wanting to see Rachael in concert for over ten years but have not previously lived in a city where she stopped for her tours, and have been very sick for six years and had ten brain surgeries in quick succession until the doctors gave up on me and decided to stop operating. Seeing Rachael basically turned into a bucket list show for me. Everyone in the band had great energy and I loved every minute of the show from beginning to end. Pressing Strings was a great choice for the opening act, and I love that Rachael broke from the planned set list and got Jordan to sing the duet. I know that being an independent artist without the backing of a label can be downright frightening, but keep making amazing music and staying true to yourself, Rachael, and we as your loyal fans will keep trying to bring more people to your circle.

Rachael, you are amazing, I'm so glad I pledged and helped you release your new album! The venue itself was pretty great, it was small and intimate without being cramped. Rachael and her band were really amazing, the only drawback is two audience in the front row was way too rude and annoying. They were supposed to stand in the back but they made it all the way to the first row by pushing other people. One woman was sitting ON the performance stage (yes and later she stood up and standing on the stage) and the other was yelling all the time. My friend and I unfortunately stood behind them and get kicked/ pushed a zillion times during the concert.

Pick up her new album Tightrope Walker. Then make absolutely sure you catch her show, a mix of new and older classics, if she,s nearby. This is the sixth time I have made the 500 round trip from Fargo/Moorhead, worth it every time. Great band as usual. Opening act Pressing Strings also very impressive. She seems to have everything in place for success. Should that happen, maybe she would come to Fargo and save me the trip! Don't laugh, this small city has become an electric happening place, with a thriving arts scene, 20,000 college students and a lot of young adults. We also have some great venues for small and larger musical acts. Hey, Mandy Moore has played here at least a couple of times, and she packed them in at the Historic Fargo Theater on Broadway!

After hearing a couple of Rachael's songs on Pandora, I quickly became a fan. I then went to seek out a larger variety of her music on Youtube... the more I heard, the more I liked her style and incredible voice. I decided to go see her live and the Sinclair was the perfect venue. I had an unobstructed balcony view that made the whole experience even better. Most of the songs that I listened to prior to the concert were recorded stuff. But live, she belted out even more of her incredible voice and she's actually quite funny live... and seems like a really sweet, down to earth person. Will definitely go see her again : )

While I respect her desire to play new work and, as Rachael urged, to "evolve", there were too many new, unheard pieces. My preference was to hear the work I am familiar with and for the opportunity to experience the live versions of songs I've loved and listened to for years. It also would have served to energize the crowd and made for a better connection and experience for both artist and attendees. Having said that, I found her voice to be strong, sexy and beautiful, her stories on point and hilarious, and she herself comfortable and charismatic. I'll definitely keep buying the music, but I doubt I'll spend the money and make the effort to see her live performance.

I wouldn't have believed those words before the concert. I thought her studio tracks were great and I really loved them, but I wasn't prepared for the charisma & stage presence she has. I was really taken with how deep down she dug into her music, the quality of her vocals or the way she pulled off so much rocking soul. I would have loved to hear more -- longer set maybe, but overall, every song was great. I thought for a minute she was going to sing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen -- In truth, she would really do that song justice, but Landslide was a good choice too. The venue is small and that allowed for close contact which is good, but few chairs so get there in line early.

Fabulous show, incredible talent. Major league performer trying to go beyond minor league status. Hopefully her forthcoming album will be the breakthrough all her fans have been hoping for. It was good to hear her add more bluesy hard and funky songs, while still paying attention to her ballad side. She is an original. Last but not least, what an incredible band! Drove 250 miles from Moorhead, Mn. (Fargo, Nd area) to see her (4th time), more than worth it. Made for a fantastic twin cities weekend! Rachael and her bandmates were great. Wonderful, varied and rich catalog of songs with various styles .... and she let her wonderful personality come through with stories about many of the songs. The Birchmere was great for her -- great sound, not too quiet or loud (saw her the evening before at Ram's Head Annapolis, and the sounds was WAY TOO LOUD), and great views. The show did not start until 8 pm, but the tickets said 6 pm. There was no place to sit, so we had to stand for 2 hours and wait for the show to start. Then the opening act did not show, so someone picked up a guitar and played a few songs before Rachel came out. It was good once Rachel started playing, but I would suggest that the show times be better described, such as "doors open a 6 pm show starts at 8 pm." How long do you expect us to stand for show. By 10 pm I was beat and had to leave before Rachel finished playing
