Great concert. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this "old" act was and really liked their new material.

Having never seen GOF in the 80's and then seeing them on Letterman, I wasn't sure how energetic this show would be. Wow! The band was on fire and King was a maniac! It's not often you see a microwave oven get destroyed. Absolutely awesome!

We really enjoyed this show! I saw them in 1981, and while I may have slowed down in the past 30 years, singer Jon King certainly hasn't. He is frenetic on stage, and the interplay between him and stoic guitarist Andy Gill is something special. A good mix of old favorites (leaning heavily on Entertainment!) and new songs which I haven't yet (but will) purchase. Highly recommended!

These guys still have it, they were great. Sound man needed the first few songs to get things together, but after that ... MAN , they ROCKED!!!! What a great guitar sound. The whole band sounded great. Thanks

Its was a Monday night, but Gang of Four brought us a tight, high energy show we rocked like it was Saturday night. The only downside was the show had to end at some point, and yes, reality hit that it was only Monday and a full week of routine lay ahead....but who cares when your soul is full? I saw this band a few times in the 80s and loved them then, but I had forgotten just how good they were. I luckily had bought their new album and listened to it a lot before the show and i think i appreciated their new songs even more being more familiar... But that's always the case. Tight! Professional! Creative and infectious! I'd go see this same show again and again. A real treat. And the opening act Hollerado were a great segue. They were solid and quite entertaining. All in all a five star night at the paradise!

Gang of Four has returned to their dischordant roots playing an incredible set comprised mostly of music from their first 2 records Entertainment! and Solid Gold...I hope they continue to tour so I can go see them again. I saw them twice in the early 80's in both Boston and Providence... and they were great, in some ways they were even better now....and the new album has some real standout tracks the raw abrasive power of their early work has returned. I brought my 20 year old son who is a music major in college (drums and guitar) and a professional musician...at the end of the show he just looked at me and said "Wow, I don't know exactly what I expected coming to the show - but it wasn't that...that was unbelievable".... nuff said

Great to see Gang of Four. Highlight was when they brought Hugo Burnham up to fill in on drums - he lives locally, was nice to see 3 of the original Gang of 4 onstage.

Gof4 came out blazing and played songs from the new record "Content" along with a lot of back catalog. Unfortunately, sound quality was poor (couldn't hear Jon (singer) at all during the first song and took a few songs before the vocals were adjusted properly) so the guitar was overly prominent. Band had a lot of energy and played with enthusiam and vigor throughout the 1 1/2 hour show. Great set list, 2 encores, and seemed very appreciative of the audience. Venue staff was friendly and courteous. Didn't get drinks so can't speak on that. Good central location with easy parking within a short walk. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.

Amazing show! A little more touring and the new Rhythm section will be killer. I love Webster Hall, but the oversold show was frustrating. Also, holding it at the same time that another oversold show with the National downstairs, made it a little maddening. But, Kudos to Gang of Four for another incredible show.

I don't believe in the "they gave it 110%" crap. You can only give 100% and the Gang of Four did that. Jon King was a brilliant front man for the band. Older, yes, but he had the energy of someone half his years. Andy Gill was typically stoic at guitar. He made sure the songs were as edgy as ever. The new bass player and drummer were a solid backbone to the songs, because if you know anything about GO4 songs, they require a solid bassist and drummer so that Andy can play over the top and Jon can sing. The songs were heavily biased toward the Entertainment album (8 songs), but that can be expected. That album is perfection from start to finish. Next there were 4 songs from the new album, Content. New material that isn't just a re-hash of the earlier music. The other songs came from the Solid Gold and Songs of the Free albums. No Mall, No Shrinkwrapped and certainly no Hard album. We drove 3 1/2 hours and stayed overnight to go to the show. It was money well spent. 3 encores of two songs each. The guys looked like they WANTED to be there. No going through the motions. At the end of the second encore Jon King was crawling along the stage - he was beat! ...and still went on. The band played like they enjoyed it as much as we did. I'm 50 and I expected the show to be full of people my age. The crowd had some people my age but just as many, if not more people my kids ages. The kids were singing the songs along with the band! It was awesome! The last time I saw the GO4 I was 23 and I enjoyed it. This time I savored the show. I'm older, they are older, but they brought the intensity to the show that was as intense as my thrill of seeing one of my favorite bands what they do best!

I have loved Gang of Four since I was a youngin and was stoked to finally get to see them perform live. They (he - Andy Gill is the only original member) were amazing. Fun, energetic, punky, weird, everything. The bassist even gave me a cucumber and then apples. ? Most random thing ever. It was also my first time at the Variety Playhouse and I was not disappointed! Great venue with super friendly staff.

Great show by Gang of Four. Great energy. They sound terrific. Crowd was completely engaged. Great venue for a rock show like this - at the Paradise, everyone is part of the show. Personable staff, fun space. The audience ended the night hugging and slapping hands after a terrific experience. The casual fan will have a great night - and every show at the Paradise is fun.

Gang of four came out with tons of energy in their performance. The band and vocals were great. They played most of their most popular tunes and some from the new Content CD. They rocked the house and left everyone wanting more. Hollerado opened and were surprisingly good as well. They were a bit out there with some of their tunes and could use less jabber and more music. They were tight and entertaining when they stuck to the music. Wished they would have played "fake drugs" but oh well...

Band had incredible energy and still seethe with attitude and cynicism. The mix wasn't great: vocals and guitar could have been boosted. Crowd was into it, singing along to the old tunes. A great night!

I'm a huge GOF fan and was disappointed with the show. We sat in the balcony and had expected great sound because we had recently seen Peter Hook at the Music Box and the sound was excellent. I'm unclear as to whose responsibility it is to get the sound right, but this night it was bad. The vocals were muffled, drowned out, and incomprehensible for most songs. The guitar sound was excellent on the other hand. In terms of the band, they only played four songs from the new album and I would have preferred to hear more.

One of the best shows I've seen in a long time. took about a song for the venue to get the vocals dialed in for Gang of Four but after that things were awesome.

Jon King put a ton of dynamics and energy into the show & Andy Gill sounded really good. New drummer was excellent, and the bassist rocked, too. It was a super WAY-Back show, reminder of the good punk/alt from the 80s (saw Go4 in Buffalo NY in 1982 on the Man in a Uniform tour. Wow, it's been a long time; the show brought back a ton of memories. All in all excellent--just wished they'd played Essence.

Great show! I saw GO4 at Mabuhay Gardens back in early eighties and they still have their Mojo. New drummer and Bass players (Thomas McNeice and Mark Heaney ) add lots of skilled energy and new vibe. Andy and Jon still have it, look great and are clearly "into it." Excellent mix of old and new songs. I think the new album "Content" is outstanding. Awesome night--really loved it!

Despite being a fan of Gang of Four since their debut album, this was my first time seeing them live. Andy Gill s guitar work easily matched anything on record and Jon King s vocals were very strong. The drums and bass (an essential component to the Gang of Four sound) were solid and propelled the show forward at breakneck speed. The band had enthusiasm and energy to spare and it was a very compelling performance. The opening band Hollerado showed a lot of ability and promise, but let endings of songs go on way too long, and seemed to pad their set with more talk between songs that would be warranted for a 45 minute opening slot. If they tightened up their arrangements and kept the distance between songs more concise they will be someone to watch.

Fantastic show! Wasn't sure what to expect, but Gang of Four delivered the goods. High energy, sonic fury, and attitude to spare. I didn't see them in their early years, but I'm glad to have gotten the chance now. Well worth the trip to SF!!

Second time seeing Gang of Four at the Fillmore and they blew me away once again. This band's music needs to be seen live to really appreciate. They may not be the hardest, fastest, funkiest or loudest band out there, but what they create live is DRAMA. Jon King and Andy Gill are consummate showmen, creating tension in a way that few can do. It slow burns, building up from the beginning of the set. There are no cheap thrills, no ludicrous rock posturing, but instead a sense of urgency and discomfort that draws you in. Not, of course, that you can't also get your ass grooving to some of the funkier numbers -- revolution that you can dance to! If you ever get a chance to see this band live, TAKE IT.

Rocked from the first note to the last. Came out strong with song from new album, played all the "hits" and mixed in new material flawlessly. Encore was only disappointment, because it meant the show was over.

They started off on the wrong foot it seemed. The mix was completely wrong initially, and Jon King, the vocalist, couldn't be heard. The sound guy eventually pulled up the mix so you could hear him somewhat. But the vocalist seemed to struggle ... you couldn't distinctly hear the words. Which is odd, since the Gang Of Four's sound is sparse. There's space for the vocals on the records. Andy Gill, who I think is a guitar god .. he seemed disconnected initially. So the start was very shaky. I was ready to walk out after the first two songs. I really felt disappointed. The 4th song (?) was 'Paralyzed' which is my favorite song by them. It features Andy Gill on vocals, not Jon King. It already sounded much better, and it felt like the band had shifted into gear by this song. From there the concert just got better and better, and it was fantastic. Two 2-song encores. The crowd was ecstatic. So, overall, a truly unforgettable show, despite the start. One thing that impressed me about the band ... they appeared genuinely grateful to the fans. There's a sense of respect to the music, the performance, and the fans.
