I cannot believe how incredible the entire bill was last night. All three groups were so good that it is hard for me to believe that for 10.00 we had an entire evening of great music. Carney is one of my favorite new bands and they were even better live. If you have not heard them or heard the music all I can say is that they were actually better live because to hear the lead singer hit the notes he hits live... just the way the entire band played...well besides being mind blowing it caused me to SMILE A LOT! Athlete and Rescues were equally fantastic. Athlete really knew how to draw the audience in. You were singing along and there were jokes flying about the soccer match from earlier in the day. You felt like you were in a pub in England listening to some local mates. All of them sounded as good or better live. What a great night.

These guys are awesome. Was a shame (and a treat at the same time) that there wasn't a better crowd for these guys. I hope they come back!!!

This is my third time seeing this terrific band from the UK., 2nd as headliners. I have not been disappoined yet. They are a hidden gem amongst much crap out there that we call music. Why these guys have not struck gold here in the US is beyond me!?! They opened with the always fun El Salvador and closed with what is still their best and most personal song, Wires. The band as a whole was tighter than tight, Joel Pott's voice in tip-top shape, and bass player Carey Willetts lent some great backing vocals, in particular on The Outsiders and the aforementioned Wires. Besides Wires, other highlights were Hurricane, Half-Light, and 2 tunes from their new CD Black Swan - Black Swan Song and The Getaway, which is my favorite from the new CD. Would have loved to hear Shake Those Windows and Chances but this is a very minor complaint. They have so many great songs over their 4 CDs that there is enough to keep a fan like me happy....and I was very happy at the end of the night. Another great job by one of my favorite bands out there. Honorable mention goes to opening band Carney with the dynamic frontman Reeve Carney, who will be playing Spider-man on Broadway this fall. His voice is dare I say Jeff Buckley-esque and I did recognize one of their originals, a cool song called Love Me Chase Me. Best song of their set was their amazing cover of The Beatles "I Want You/She's So Heavy". They definitely got my attention.

Another superb Athlete show at the Bowery Ballroom - lots of singing along and great energy from the band. The sound mix was probably better than even their last show at the Bowery ballroom, and as usual, the band was so generous with the audience. We got to hear Wild Wolves, a B-side, in addition to all of the big hits from their previous albums. The opening band Carney was not my cup of tea...very much a jam band, that got just a bit too self-indulgent for my taste. They even took a beloved Beatles tune and managed to drag it out to death. Another song involved the lead singer howling at us for what felt like a full 3 minutes. Another song took 2 or 3 minutes too long to end - just when I thought it was over and the audience was clapping, yet another drawn out guitar solo popped up. On the other hand, a lot of people like that stuff, so whatever floats your boat!

Athlete is not a band of the UK's greatest musicians. But we don't need them to be. Their anthems have been some of my favorites for years and I was excited to see them. Joel appeared very self-conscious as a performer, always asking the crowd for more noise and commenting how he was only receiving polite applause. I hate this. The crowd will cheer when the band starts working it. Plus, he would move out to the edge of the stage, clearly to get a clamoring crowd, when he wasn't even playing a solo. It was awkward. Potts is not Chris Martin or Matt Bellamy. He needs to worry about singing than being a star. Didn't sing my three favorite songs, Light the Way, It's Not Your Fault, or Flying Over Bus Stops. But overall, it was a nice show. I've seen too many bands through to know when I'm witnessing something special. They didn't feel it. We didn't feel it.

Athlete is fantastic in concert. The way they move through songs is seamless and they really engage with the audience. I had such a good time! Athlete is such a feel good band. The only thing I could have done without is the opening act, Carney. Their songs were obnoxiously long and mostly radiohead-whiney. Plus they played for at least an hour which is way too long until the main course.
