I've been to a TON of concerts and this one has truly turned out to be my all time favorite. I wanted to go to this one because, well, it's STEVE MARTIN! What a classic. I honestly didn't have much concern about the actual banjo/music. But, I in all honesty LOVED every single minute of it. It was like a two for one concert....Steve Martin had HILARIOUS jokes throughout the whole thing and the music was so amazing. He is extremely talented, as is the whole band. They do all different kinds of music and singing and you stay extremely entertained the entire time. I went with my husband and our moms and all of us were equally happy! Great family show, great comedy act, great concert. Don't miss out on this! Steven Martin is so talented and his music is truly beautiful. Plus you laugh your butt off the entire time! I left with a great respect for blue grass/banjo music and an even greater affection for Steve Martin as a person, comedian and performer. Get your tickets now if you haven't already!!

When I heard Steve won a grammy last year for Bluegrass, I figured that it was given to him based on his star power. Not So... Nothing was given to him, his writing, producing and performing earned him that grammy.

Steve Martin is a talent in nearly all the arts! Writer, comedian, music composer and banjo player! This concert mixed his natural talent of comedy with wonderful, foot-stomping blue-grass. This was a wonderful experience and it was great to see him on stage again! The finale was one of many highlights....King Tut on banjo! Loved it! And adore Steve Martin. Wish the evening could have lasted longer.

The band has some amazing talent, the best was after they came back on stage at the end to do an encore. Steve Martin seems like he's there mostly for namesake and some comedy, but anyone playing the banjo is impressive in the first place. The evening was a little shorter than we thought. It started a little after 8 and ended before 10, but there was no intermission. It was great music, very entertaining, and lots of fun.

When I bought the tickets I was not expecting a bluegrass concert but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Steve Martin has been my all time favorite comedian since the 70's and he's still as funny as ever. I saw him 30 years ago when he was doing standup and it was awesome to be in the same room with him again. He also is performing with a very talented group of musicians.

Steve Martin is amazing on the banjo. His band, the Steep Canyon Ramblers I believe, were an astounding bluegrass band. Most of the music was instrumental, but if you are looking for quality bluegrass interspersed with classic Steve Martin quips, go see this show. My only disappointment was he didn't play "You Belong to Me" off of The Jerk, one of my all time favorites. Great show, worth the ticket price.

It was obvious from the look on Steve Martin's face that he takes great pleasure in working with musicians of this caliber. I had no idea he was as skilled as he is at playing the banjo and that he had written so many songs. The banter with the group was entertaining and did not come across as completely contrived as it can with some performances. We were treated to a glimpse of Steve's comic genius but it never overpowered the music. The two comic songs that were played were hugely entertaining and one was the song performance of my lifetime.

This concert was fantastic! The Hollywood Bowl is a spectacular venue. Steve Martin was both witty and accomplished as a musician! Madeleine Peyroux was lovely and her music was true to form. The outstanding surprise of the night was the Preservation Hall Band--they absolutely ruled the house with their Nwalins energy!!! Hats off to the well organized park-n-ride system--not being a public transport user I didn't know what to expect--it was pretty much idiot proof (perfect for me).

This is the 2nd time we've seen Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers live. Both times were a fun romp, both memorable and amazing! Not only is Steve hilarious throughout but his Banjo Playing is phenomenal. And to think he composes as well! The Steep Canyon Ranger's fiddler is by far the best I have ever seen. Edie Brickell was charming. The Preservation Hall band was almost worth the price of admission alone! What an incredible find. So talented! They had people on their feet! I felt like I had a mini-vaca in new Orleans! Madeleine Peyroux has a lovely voice but she and her band lacked stage presence. They were good to listen to but her band in particular was charmless. Still, she is an undeniable talent.

We came for the Preservation and it met our high expectations. Steve Martin was wonderful and both groups made the evening outstanding. on a sour note, Madeleine Peyroux was a disappointment and we would have walked out if we weren't waiting for Preservation Jazz. She was not up for the Bowl. Her selections were not helpful. Someone should mention that singing Leonard Cohen usic is not helpful to her career. But on an up note, the Preservation trumpeter Mark Braud was at his finest, dazzling!!!!!! And Steve Martin was an absolute delight, as was Edie and the group.

An all around FANTASTIC night. Madeleine Peyroux began the show with a nice set of mellow jazz. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band transformed the Bowl into a giant revival meeting with their traditional NO jazz that had the whole place rocking and clapping along. They killed. Finally Steve Martin and his band The Steep Canyon Rangers with vocalist Edie Brackell kept the party going with a rollicking set that mixed some amazing banjo and fiddle playing with Martin's signature brand of wacky humor. After nearly three solid hours of music, the crowd let out a collective sigh of disappointment when Martin announced the final number. A night of great musicianship from all 3 acts that should not be missed.

I love Madeleine Peyroux's voice, so naturally, when I saw her name as one the featured artists, I was ecstatic and had to buy a ticket. And though I'm not a Blue Grass fan I was excited at the idea of seeing/hearing Steve Martin play live. The concert started promptly at 8pm with Madeleine Peyroux opening. Her timeless soulful voice is such a delight and in my opinion a gift to a deprived generation that missed out on Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. There were a few moments where her singing was slightly overshadowed by her band's sound but I think this was due to a sound engineering error, and not at the Bowl's Acoustics fault. Her set was too short for me, but what was even more disappointing was the apathetic reaction of the audience when she finished the set - there were no claps or howls for an encore - well, just mine I think. About the 10 mins after Peyroux had left the stage, Preservation Hall Jazz Band started to play. Their first few songs sounded a bit dissonant to me; I'm not sure if it was the sound engineering or a sync miscalculation from the band members. Eventually the sounds became more cohesive and the band's hold on the audience became stronger. By the last two songs on their set, the all-brass (well, and a piano) band had the entire audience clapping and swaying to their beat. The band exited the stage and the audience (me included) kept asking for an encore. The band came out again, and to my delight, their encore song was 'When the Saints Go Marching In'. I closed my eyes for a second to picture myself at the French's Quarter, in front on the actual Preservation Hall. Then the center of stage where the New Orleans' band was playing started to turn 180º (nifty little trick) with band and all on top, to let the new stage - for Steve Martin and his band - show. About 15 minutes passed and then Mr. Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers walked onto the stage turning the audience wild. With a masterfully balanced mixture of comedic bits, introductions and segue-ways to each song, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, and The Steep Canyon Rangers, delivered a wonderfully enjoyable concert in just a bit over an hour. Despite the short amount of time, the set was vast, varied, animated, and positively entertaining. There is no doubt that Mr. Martin has mastered the Banjo, and that he is indeed a great musician who - whether purposely or not - has successfully brought modern blue grass music to mass non-blue-grass audiences. He has now created a powerful ensemble between The Steep Canyon Rangers, Edie Brickell, and himself. I was in awe at the talent exuding from these individuals. The Rangers are all exceptional musicians, either doing vocal harmonies or playing their own instruments. I was particularly impressed with Nicky Sanders - the violinist, sorry, Fiddler - who is undoubtedly classically trained. He, ingeniously and (seemingly) effortlessly intercalated popular or widely recognizable melodies into their over-seven-minutes-long rendition of Orange Blossom Special. I mentioned there were a few sound snafus during Peyroux's and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band respective performances. Well, no such mistakes during Steve Martin's (and company) performance. As a matter of fact I was in disbelief when Edie Brickell came to the stage and started singing. Her mellifluous voice was so crisply delivered that to me it sounded even better than a studio-recorded track. I had seen Steve Martin play with the blue grass band in one the late night shows before. I knew I would enjoy a live performance, but did not picture myself going home and buying their songs in itunes afterwards - again, I'm not a blue grass fan. YET, that is just what I did. I HAD to buy "Sarah Jane and The Iron Mountain Baby". I'm so glad that my flu/cold did not stop me from attending the concert. It was a night to remember. I honestly love the Hollywood Bowl's sound, selection of shows, and atmosphere (well except the marihuana smokers who ruin it for me). If you read this rambling all the way to the end and found it useful, let me make another recommendation, look into the Hollywood Bowl Park N Ride section. Hassle, worry-free way to get to and from the Bowl. Save money, headaches and help the environment.

The first half was a jazz band. I liked @ 1/3 of that show and felt the rest was just ok. The second half of the show was steve and the steep canyon rangers. I loved the show and highly recommend it. The women singers in both parts of the show didn't do anything for me. I just didn't feel they had anything special to contribute to the performances, and I would have preferred hearing more of the other performers instead.

All the acts and performances were great but I particularly like the Perservation Hall Jazz Band. I have been fortunate to have seen them twice with this year and I can never get enough of that good ole Nawlins' flavor. They brought the house down with "When the Saints go Marching in." They had two tuba players and the one I liked best must be suffering from ADHD because he never stood still, unlike the other. I could easily imapgine him going down the streets of Nawlins leading a 'second line'. Steve's performance was equally entertaining, he has infused more of his comedic nature into their act. The songs that Edie did were equally great and the one about the Iron Mountain train was particularly moving.

From the moment Madeline Peyroux stepped onstage as an opener, with her sexy smokey voice, we knew the evening would be unforgettable. Next up: Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a wild taste of New Orleans. They were unbelievable! Passionate, talented, a great blend of jazz and soul. It was apparent how much they were enjoying themselves, and they pulled the audience right in, and had everyone on their feet, clapping and dancing along. Steve Martin and the band were FABULOUS. Even for non-bluegrass fans, they make the genre so accessible with their wit and humor. Edie Brickell was great on vocals, and the stories behind the songs felt like being part of a behind the scenes look at how music is created. Fresh, fun, and a masterclass on musicianship.

Steve Martin and the Rangers were amazing, incredibly good, but I was so tired by the time they finally came on that it significantly diminished my appreciation of them. The lead-in acts were SO tiring and uninspiring. Some of the Preservation Hall stuff was pretty good, but some was sloppy and self-serving, and some was just way too LOUD. Peyroux was not at all worth coming to hear. The musicians who accompanied her were great.

Though show didn't do so well on Broadway, this in-concert, intermission-less production was tremendous, amazing, glorious and, as Steve admitted, the way to stage it. He and Edie kicked off show live on stage and ended it on stage as well, standing, I noted, in back of theatre the rest of time. In-concert, with all the Broadway cast, the story was much clearer, the singing (and minimal acting, of course) was superb. Grammy-nominated music and songs. You must hear Carmen Cusack! Having seen the show and loved the music, this concert version was a delight. Having the original cast made the presentation even better. The introduction by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell added to the enjoyment; his banjo playing and her rendition of a song that did not make the show, prior to the actual presentation, enhanced the evening. Carmen Cusack is a gem; her voice with the bluegrass music and haunting words hit home . Rob Berman on the piano and conducting made the music come alive! Steve Martin was his usual hilarious sandwiched between excellent musical performances with his band. Edie Brickell added to the performance in just the right amount, appearing in about half of the numbers with Steve's band. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band delivered top notch musicianship and would have been worth the price of admission by itself. The evening would have been much better without the inclusion of Madeleine Peyroux. Even the best of her songs were only average. Her arrangement and rendition of "Bird on the Wire", a song that I really like, was particularly bad, the worst we have ever heard.

Steve Martin is a magnificent talent. Funny and musically gifted on the banjo. Even though it was billed as Jazz at the Bowl, the bluegrass music played was fun and fit well with the opening acts. Edie Brickell was a delight as were the Stony Mountain Boys. The fiddle player made the evening special. Preservation Hall Jazz Band is New Orleans Jazz to the core. It was obvious the band was having a blast playing. Madeleine Peyroux is a gifted singer. I liked her style and voice. Others in my party were not as impressed. I would recommend this event to everyone.

This show was amazing! The music and singing were incredible. The jokes added something very special to the performance. We would definitely see Steve Martin and The Preservation Jazz Band again!! What a fun show!

We were bummed that the first hour and a half was the opening bands and Steve Martin only played for an hour. That and the opening acts were jazz while Steve is bluegrass. Never understood why people think those two genres work together.

Love Steve Martin, his music and his one-liners. Wish his part of the show could have been longer. Great seeing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, too. A fun night out under the stars.

Loved loved loved Steve Martin and Edie B. So much fun, gorgeously musical, unusual for LA, and wish there had been more.

Steve Martin with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Eddie Brickell. One of the best concerts that I have ever attended! Simply stated it was two hours of exceptional music, great humor and superb entertainment! Steve Martin is excellent on the banjo and his comedic talents were in full flight for the whole evening. When he was playing with the Steep Canyon Rangers the sound was fantastic. Loved the banjo playing! Steve Martin has not lost a step in the area of comedy, very clean and very funny. The Steep Canyon Rangers are an excellent blue grass band. They are very accomplished musicians. At one point during the concert Steve Martin and Eddie Brickell went back stage and the Steep Canyon Rangers performed a number of songs including an a cappella piece. All of the songs were done very well and the a cappella song was excellent. Eddie Bricknell sang a number of songs that she and Steve Martin co-wrote, she is a very good singer. All of this made for an exceptional and very highly recommend concert.

Yes, it was fun to see Steve- but it was most disappointing that he spend the entire night reading from a script. I understand it was a "lecture", but the entire "performance" was completely void of any humanity or personality. He never went "off-book" to actually "talk"... we spent the entire night being "read to".

Steve Martin is one of the most brilliant, fascinating and creative speakers I have ever had the privilege to attend. My only complaint was that it was not longer!

I didn't know what to expect from Steve Martin when we came to UB because he hasn't done stand up in so long, but his speech was very memorable. It's a very rare experience to jump in to the reason's why someone so famous as Mr. Martin gave up stand up comedy so abruptly. He shared some of his most memorable lines, made us laugh, made us want to cry at points, and shared his life story. Fantastic!

We really enjoyed hearing Steve Martin in a not so characteristic voice, pretty introspective, honest and including just enough humor to keep us engaged. We were not sure what to expect and having UB "dignitaries", the 4 gentlemen who introduced him, covering the silliness factor--it was a satisfying evening all around. We were not expecting to have such good seats, we could see everything and hear very well.

He is an Icon. A speech that was both educational and funny. Left us wanting more after only 55 minutes - there was so much more he could have gone into. But none the less, a wonderful time.

I admit I didn't know what to expect, but I am such a fan and was so thrilled that he was coming to talk. The evening was mostly biographical which was interesting because I didn't know alot about his career building. He had photos, videos, props, and of course his humor. He was only on for about an hour. Not that I thought it would be several hours, I just thought it might be longer than it was. I was a little disappointed, but if I think about it, I supposed I can't be too bitter about it-you try to come up with enough to say for 50-60 minutes.

I was a little disappointed when I found out this wasn't a Stand Up. This ended up being better than we could've expected. This was a great presentation of Steve's path to fame. I was even tearing up at the end. It was very bittersweet.

Steve Martin shares from his book the evolution of his comedy style and the ups and downs of the life of a fledgling comedian. This is not a comedy act but a dissection of his rise to fame and fortune. If you like Steve Martin and want to know more about who he is and how he developed, you will love this presentation. I do and I did! But read the book first, it adds to the depth of his speech. One concern, he ended very abruptly.

In a sense I was glad it wasn't longer then an hour. The temperture there was hot, where was the air? And I really would of liked Steve to get into more of his movies. $54.00 for less then an hour, no.
