The Kirby Center in WillesBarre continues to hit home runs with their lobby shows. This one featured Allison Moorer as opener with Hayes Carll as the main attraction. Both performers were stellar with their songs and Hayes is quite droll and humorous.

I really like Hayes Carll, especially his album Trouble in Mind. This was the first time I've seen him perform and I was excited to see him in a fairly small venue like Paradise. I'd been to Paradise only once before (I live in Brooklyn) to see the Antlers. In both concerts (Antlers and Hayes) my criticism is the same: the vocals aren't miked well enough. I find this extremely annoying, and I don't know if this is always a problem at Paradise, or if I just happen to be 0 for 2. I will add that while Hayes and his band began their set with great energy and charisma, it seemed to fade somewhat as the evening wore on. Good, but not quite as inspired or inspiring as I hope for in live performances. Saving their strength for Williamsburg, Brooklyn the following night? The opener btw, Caitlin Rose, was terrific. I didn't know her music and I have since downloaded her most recent cd. I have to say she was better in person.

The opening bands, Shovels and Rope and Jason Isbell with the 400 units were well worth a show all on their own!!! Hayes Carll... will be Hayes Carll. The only ick was the will call girl. Just nasty. But she had nothing to do with the show, did she? Had a memorable great time.

Hayes Carll rocked the house in Boston & is probably the best & most prolific song writer of his generation. Very Clever is what "Wrecks Bell" calls him, I say say a genius who loves what he does & sings about drinking & women with poetic humor. A Bar Room Masterpiece! Frank from Memphis

Front and center seats at Billy Bobs... amazing view, and we were SO close to the band. I loved every minute.

The cover bands were a million times better! You could barely hear him and when you could it was still difficult to understand, and sounded like he was mummbling. We kept waiting for him to take a break so they would play the juke box...he didn't take a break, so we left. Sorry, but we did not enjoy at all. Just not good~

Hayes' interaction with the audience makes you believe he really wants to be there for you. The band was really tight, and considering their schedule that weekend, they were right on the mark. Billy Bob's was fun and full of music history. You need to remember this is a bar, so the drunk people sitting behind you need to be ignored, but it's ok to be very happy when they get kicked out!

John Evans was a pleasant surprise - nice tight R&R band. 4 of our group of 7 actually preferred Evans to Caryll. Some fun lyrics. Hayes was what we expected - hadn't seen him before but have his recordings. Duet was a disappointment without a twangy female voice. Most impressed by two of the musicians..especially the guy from Chickasaw, OK, on the slide, dobro, etc. Standard complaints - Dallas HOB - too loud and the terrible flood lights are inexcusable..why do we periodically need to think we're under interrogation?

Enjoyed all three bands: Shovels and Rope, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Hayes Carll. The sound was good and while it was sold out, it never felt too crowded.

As a long time Drive By Trucker fan, I must admit I was rooting for Jason from jump. His new album is wonderful, and his set was as well. Relaxed right out of the gate, he played new material for the first 5 or 6 songs, the band tight as hell, and Jase carving up the leads. He then dipped into songs he wrote while with DBT and they were inspired as well. I certainly will not miss Mr Isbell anytime he"s in the area, highly recommended! I am a HUGE Hates Carll fan, got into him 3 or 4 years ago (when Little Rock was released..) and this was my first chance to see him live. Sadly, Mr Carll was......lost, man. He is one the best songwriters working today, IMO, but at least on Friday, absolutely unispired and frozen. Some guys love the spotlight, and some collect paychecks from their mailboxes. Hayes do yourself a favor Sir, hang out in Texas, write the killer songs you know you can, relax and collect the royalties that will surely continue to find their way to your house Brother. Jerry Reed did it for many years and it doesn't seem to be such a bad scenario for such a gifted writer as yourself!

I've seen Hayes twice, both times were excellent. The first time was in Portsmouth and he was solo for most of the performance. But this time it was a whole new level with the lead guitarist and drummer. The place was rocking and everyone was bought into the show. Hayes is well known in Texas and drawing more interest in the Northeast. One of our favorites to listen to around the firepit with friends.

Great show! Mr. Carll has pulled together a tight trio. The guitarist and drummer know that folks have come to see the headliner, but they show that they can play! I often head out of shows early, but these guys held me until the end... My one criticism: Why such a long delay between the opener (and kudos to Curtis McMurtry! Given his gene pool, he's got a lot to live up to, but he is extremely talented.) and main act? Mr. McMurtry had one instrument (acoustic guitar) and no band. (Trying to sell drinks, maybe?) Need to speed up the transition.

The Kirby Center lobby seemed an odd venue but actually was wonderfully intimate and alive for two singer/songwriter guitarists who each played solo and then sang some songs together. Alison Moorer has a wonderful voice and high level of professionalism. I was only familiar with her most recent CD which she did a couple of songs from but I enjoyed everything she sang (about half an hour). Hayes' set (about 75 minutes) rambled around his catalogue and featured some stories leading into songs not on his CD's - as well as some explanations of stories behind other songs. He is a totally entertaining storyteller as well as musician. Both Hayes and Alison seemed honest, comfortable and genuinely likable. I did not make a set list but some of Hayes' more well known songs ("She left me for Jesus," "Another Like You," "The Magic Kid," for example) were not played. He and Alison sang a nice rendition of the Everly Brothers classic "Bye Bye Love." Overall, this was a high quality show from some very talented folks that rarely come to NE Pennsylvania. I was grateful to be there.

Luke Bell opened for Hayes Carll and stole the show. Hayes Carll is truly talented, but sometimes is a bit too cliche imho, and that's why my vote goes to Luke Bell. Luke Bell has a fluid feel to his songs that aren't overworked or contrived. His voice is his own (and not trying to sound like Sturgill, Graham Parsons, Steve Earle, etc)..Gotta applaud both of them for giving us a great show and some fine music. Love the Teragram venue- great sound, showcasing some fine new and established artists...yes, standing only, but well-managed so not overcrowded...one of our new go-to places downtown!

Worst concert I have ever been to!! Everything stated it started at 8PM - WRONG!! Hayes didn't get on stage til after 9:30. Could not understand him. Acoustics were horrible. Sounded like canned music. Had never seen him live & was lookin forward to a fun filled evening but it was a horrible disappointment. Won't ever try it again. This was advertised as being In the Horseshoe Riverdome but it was in the CMT bar. NOT a good place to hear someone for the first time. didn't even stay for the whole show.

Hayes Carll's sense of humor in his lyrics came through in spades during this awesome show. Backed up by The Warren Hood Band, the show was pure fun. Carll has a great stand-up comic patter between songs which gave us background on how/why he wrote them. A real find, though, was Emily Gimble, who plays keyboard for the back-up band. Her pipes and keyboard work are outstanding. It's understandable since her grandfather is Johnny Gimble, Texas fiddle player extraordinaire, while her father, DIck GImble, is also a well-know Texas musician. But it was her singing that really stood out. Truly on the order ot a Janis Joplin-a real belter. Turns out she was just voted Keyboardist of the Year in Austin. Fun show with a tight back-up/opening act band. See it.

Hayes Carll is a somewhat unknown gem. He did many of his many great songs (He would have had to done a 3 hour set to do them all). good backing band Warren Hood and the Goods, with Warren on fiddle and Emily as the Female accompanist on several songs. He is not on the East Coast often, so if you get a chance, make sure you go.

I've seen Hayes a couple times now and will go to see him again. I will probably try to avoid the Aladdin theater in Portland Oregon though. The audience has clearly spent too much time trying to emulate the show Portlandia. Hayes was spot-on though and powered through the poorly timed catterwaller of the crowd. I highly recommend Hayes' music and have shared it with many.

The Hayes Carll show on 12/29/11 was a fantastic show. This was the 3rd time I have seen him play this year. It was definately worth the extra bucks to get the reserved seats for the show. The sound was good and he played a great set list. We took our daughter and son in law that were in town for the holidays to the show. They had never seen him play before and they had a great time too. Our son in law will soon be deployed. Hayes took the time to do a meet and greet with us before the show and gave Edgar a shout out before he played the title song from his most recent release, KMAG YOYO! It was a night that we will never forget.

Caitlan Rose -- the opening act -- sang well, but hasn't quite figured out what to do with herself when she's not singing. Hayes did a great job. His lyrics are creative and funny and the band was powerful and rockin'. Hayes did a good job of connecting to the audience and keeping the set lively.

Hayes Carll was awesome at the Birchmere. Of course, I expected no less from him, although it was my first time seeing him play. An unexpected highlight of the evening, however, was the awesomeness of his opening act. Caitlin Rose and her band are extremely talented young artists, and I've been listening to her music ever since the show.

Thoroughly enjoyable performance by Hayes Carll and the Gulf Coast Orchestra at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA on Monday night. The band was the high point - great backup for Hayes and some stellar solos. This was my first time seeing Carll live, and I was a little disappointed. His voice seemed a little worn (maybe he was sick) and did not pack anywhere near the punch nor have the range that he displays on his albums. Was simply off key a couple of times. But his songs are great and he clearly is enjoying himself. Good two hours of his song book, including a few I had not heard before from his first CD. Perfect amount of stage banter and song introductions. Told a few stories, but never drifted far from the music. Will definitely see him again when he is in the area and hope his voice is in better shape.

This was a lot of fun ... Hayes seemed a little off when he started but definitely warmed up a couple of songs in ... The venue was not sold out but Hayes said he thought it was their best Brooklyn showing yet -- in the end he did 6 encores which was fantastic... The last couple was to half the house since the rest had already left, thinking the show was over.

Hayes made the audience feel appreciated and the venue is small and intimate with great sound. The only negative was the morons who feel the need to hold conversations during slower songs. They shout to be heard over the music. Go outside and talk!

This show was great. Hayes is a genuinely nice person and just puts on a fantastic show. He was hanging outside the venue before the show and I got to shake his hand and talked to him for a bit. It was awesome. He was taking requests on stage plus played an amazing set. He really set the standard of what a musician should act like towards their fans and that is being grateful.
