Stephin Merritt

Stephin Merritt

STEPHIN MERRITT IN CONCERT:Indie icon Stephin Merritt has been captivating fans with his brilliant baritone voice, heartbreaking melodies, and bitingly funny lyrics since the early '90s, and he remains as powerful as ever more than two decades later. Merritt's primary creative outlet is his band The Magnetic Fields, a baroque pop outfit that has enjoyed tremendous critical success over the years and continues to draw indie fans out in droves anytime they perform. Merritt is known for his musical and personal idiosyncrasies, and every Magnetic Fields show offers fans glimpse into his weird and wonderful world – he only wears brown, his baritone voice is untrained but brilliant, and he suffers from hyperacusis, a rare hearing condition that has left him extremely sensitive to loud noise. Rather than hamper the show, his condition has made it even more unique and wondrous, leading the band to favor a stripped-down setup consisting of acoustic instruments and limited percussion.

Although I've seen them before, their musicianship has reached new heights. The humor and insights in the autobiographical sequence of songs, year by year, as well as the stage presentation and videography are spot on. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and wish we were able to attend the second night!

The show was great, a cross between theater and an alt-rock show, very S. Merritt. I brought my kids (10&7) and we all had a blast. It's not musically on par with heyday Mag Fields, and it's a set piece, so the set list is static, no encores. But he has not lost his touch as a songwriter, and the band's multi instrumental musicality is a treat to watch live, much more impressive than studio versions in that sebse. And of course S. Merritt is dry and hilarious.

A clever, pleasant and intimate show with a pleasantly comprehensive and deep-cut-filled set list.
