Father John Misty

Father John Misty

FATHER JOHN MISTY IN CONCERT:Father John Misty brings folk into the 21st century with each eclectic element he incorporates into his unique sound, and his charismatic showmanship makes his live shows a must-see. When he's strumming his way through ballads like ìThe Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartmentî his emotional vocals and heartbreaking lyrics make alt-country fans feel right at home. But heís just as comfortable strutting his stuff to noisy, spiteful rockers like ìThe Ideal Husbandî and turning out full-blown electronica on tracks like the transcendently beautiful ìTrue Affectionî. With his singular combination of Americana traditions with cutting-edge sounds, Father John Misty is a folk icon for a new generation, and fans won't want to miss the chance to see him conjure up his immersive sound in concert.

The Arlington was a great venue for FJM to pull off a great show. Good sound quality and a not overwhelming venue (~2000) to make it feel more personal. FJM put on a great set - though I wish people sat down more - the seats were comfy but everyone stood for most of the show...highly recommend!

I love Father John Misty and was pleased when I didn't need to travel for work the week he was in town. The tabernacle is one of my favorite locations in Atlanta. FJM put on an amazing performance with, as always, great lighting. There was a pretty good crowd but I couldn't help but be a bit frustrated at people around me casually talking. Highly recommended performer and venue.

After seeing FJM at Monterey Pops in June, we didn't miss the chance to see him again at the Greek at Cal. Poetry to music delivered sardonically by Father John, accompanied by his inimitable "dancing," beautiful voice, fabulously talented backup band including a string and horn section, and a mesmerizing light and background video display prove to be an all-around dynamic, entertaining concert yet again. Don't miss this guy's show if you get the chance to go.

This was the third (and best) Father John Misty show that I've seen. Josh is a great songwriter, has a great voice and a very tight band, but what really separates him from his talented brethren is his electric stage presence. He's funny, self-mocking, insightful, and entirely spontaneous. His crazy dance moves make each song something like karaoke in an insane asylum -- and I mean that as a compliment! I've seen a ton of live music over the years, but I've never enjoyed a band more than Father John Misty.

This was one of my favorite shows ever. The venue was great, and FJM was an absolutely engaging performer. He kept all eyes on him as he danced, sang, and made comedic banter between songs. The musicians were fantastic, including a string quartet, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Great show! While I have already been enjoying Fear Fun for the last few months, it really came alive in concert. This is what seeing live music is all about....and you could tell that he was really engaged in the moment. He's got swivel hips...

Amazing show. Best of the year. I wih it was 21+ not 18+. That almost ruined it for me. Being a very small short woman. I have listened to him for quiet some time and I feel the young crowd ruined the experience of an amazing moment. Huge tall loud guy being belligerent in front of me. If not for the young crowd it was the best show I've seen in a year or so. I frequent shows multiple times a year and know some of the artists. Please keep 21+

I have absolutely loved listening to FMJ since my fiancée and I first got together (he's the one that shows me how awesome FMJ is). This was the first concert that I had been to of his and it was AMAZING! Totally rocked out in such a classy venue. At the end of the show, my fiancée and I rushed to the front of the stage and asked him to "marry us". It's been our dream to have him as our band at our wedding, but clearly, that's ridiculous. So he said "I'm not ordained!" but we said who cares and he gave a sweet, chuckling grin and threw his hands up saying "you're married!". Definitely the most amazing concert experience I've ever had!!

Excellent show. Enjoy the first 2 albums more than the last, so for me it was not my favorite. A little weird for me that there was a back and forth between blissful love and despair. Still, Josh Tillman is a great performer, and this concert did not disappoint.

The pure unbridled sonic alchemy being produced by the group could barely remian tethered by the construct that is the Peabody Opera House. The aural vistas and dynamic stage presence threatened to burst the foundation with every chord struck. Father John Misty put in a truly phenomenal show. One for the ages. On behalf of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area I would like to thank the group for coming through our city despite these trying times as both community and political climates are so bizarre and unfriendly.

Went with my daughter for her 25th birthday, she is a big fan, and I like his music also, the irreverent songs amuse me. It would have been great to just see him perform with a guitar, has a really good voice, but I enjoyed the music even more as he is accompanied by classical musicians with violins, cello, and so on. That was a surprise! My only wish would have been to have seating available, rather than SRO. Humphreys is a nice venue, and the people working there are nice too. It was a multi-age audience, a few other parent-kid "couples" noted. Bought tickets for my daughter to attend his next performance in San Diego as well, in the Fall.

i do not get this guy at all, nor his band of mopey shoe gazers, the crowd loves him and whatever gets ya'll thru the nite, too bad for those who thought they could not see the "sold out" show as many tix went wanting on resale sites and at least 10 were up for grabs for free by street re-sellers and fans whom had over bought, this seems to be common place at this venue and may be the way to get tix here. the Fillmore came thru as usual with a great presentation, but bummer that the outdoor stage was closed off as the smoking section was as advertised and no fresh air for you tonite, idk if someone was being set up for another show there, but it would be nice to have somewhere to go especially with the no re-entry out front. FJM walked in on air and all the believers left doing the same rock on bro.

I really was impressed by the show. FJM is talented as I'll get out. Top notch in my book. When you enjoy an album as much as I've enjoyed both of his, you always wonder if the artist can live up to the studio production. Not an issue here. He delivers more than the ticket value... and that's all that really matters.

FJM aka Josh Tillman continues to improve as a bandleader and showman. His wry songs lampoon the hipsters who comprise his audience but he manages to captivate everyone with his dorky vamping (dude is totally fit). I loved this show. I smiled and laughed throughout. I would not hesitate to see him again and I expect he will continue to grow as a showman and songwriter. Couple words about the venue. I had floor tix. Even in the front, half the audience was talking throughout the show, enjoying the club vibe and the there-ness instead of focusing on FJM, whose music and performance deserve attention. This is often a problem at The Fox. If you really want to hear the music, sit upstairs. Although you are further from the action, you can hear the band AND the lyrics.

Father John Misty continues to find new ways to dazzle and ignite his audience. This was our second time seeing him (the first was an acoustic performance), and he delivered an outstanding performance on all levels. Father John Misty is one of those rare performers (at least these days) that is light-years better live than on record. He's funny, charismatic, and talented, belting out anthem after anthem with each hitting the mark, and the soul. Highly recommend going to see him live.

This was my second time seeing Father John Misty, first as a headliner. I consider him to be one of the best performers I've ever seen. His voice is honestly breathtaking and he plays with a sense of urgency rarely seen anymore, like the stage is on fire and he's at home in the flames. Plus his dance moves are mad sexy, reminiscent of Jagger. He only has two albums at the moment, so his setlist was fully satisfying. He played all of his sophomore album "I Love You, Honeybear", which is a masterpiece and should win a handful of Grammys. We were not treated to any covers, but I attribute that to the crowd being less than respectful. STL really needs to stop giving musicians a reason not to play here.

I ve been to a lot of concerts, but never one like this. It was spirited, passionate, energetic, and emotional. He is an amazing singer as well as performer. His live voice is exactly like his recorded voice. It s so amazing to see a musician as passionate as him perform. The venue was beautiful. Images and video projected behind Father John during performance were visually impressive and very cool. I sat in the balcony in the mid section and had no issue seeing the performance. The only grievance I had was not with the venue or the artist. It was the constant flow of people getting up and down for god knows what, either going to get more alcohol or go to the bathroom because they can t hold their alcohol. I don t get irritated letting people In and out of rows once or twice, but after seven or eight times I was starting to lose it. Overall, amazing concert. I went back to my hotel room and cried over it afterwords because it was so just so breathtaking. He stayed a few minutes after to shake hands and chat with the people in the front row. I ve never seen an artist do that before. I have a friend s sibling who was there and got pictures with him after the show. I went into it not knowing what to expect and I left absolutely amazed. Best concert of my life, and possibly one of the best experiences I ve ever had.

Father John Misty is incredible in person. He's really interactive with the crowd. He tells stories and jokes. He's not the kind of musician who just stands there and sings. Over the past year I have attended several really good concerts in Brooklyn and Manhattan and have to say this one would rate as one of the best. J. Tillman (a.k.a. First time seeing Father John Misty live. Was pretty sure me and the GF were going to enjoy the concert but we were very surprised, in the best possible ways. FJM started with 3 songs from his newest album, Pure Comedy, and what got our attention was that while we were not big fans of the songs from the album, the live presentation was OUTSTANDING!!!! His voice, top notch, the light show presentation, impressive, the backstage images...perfect. This theme continued throughout the entire show. It must be said that FJM has "it", a certain charisma. This was on display as the fans were standing from the 3rd song on. Normally the Santa Barbara crowd is content to sit and clap, sing along occasionally, but it was quite the spectacle and FJM got em up and got em involved. FJM utilized the lights and seemed to be having a blast simulating images from different rock and roll eras. There was his red light backlight "Hollywood cemetery" that was a mix of the Beatles and 70s rock. PERFECT! As this was towards the end of his 2017 tour the set was tight, not a lot of chatter with the crowd but what a AMAZING show. This year we saw Devil Makes three, Chris Pureka, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Ray LaMontagne. Father John Misty was easily the best show this year. If you get a chance, any chance to check him out live do it! you will not be disappointed. He sounds INCREDIBLE live and you will find yourself lost in the experience. My only other advice is that if you get a chance to sit in a balcony area it is easier to take in the entire stage show because there is a lot going on....so worth it. Cheers and hope you get to check out Father John...just freaking amazing.

I only knew Pure Comedy going into this show. Father John Misty was such an explosive performer that I was a full blown fan by the time he was done. His vocals, the musicians, and the lighting all came together to provide an incredible experience. He also played for a pretty long time (at least two hours). We were all mesmerized by him, and he got a standing ovation. I can't wait to see him again live. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the opener, Reyes Blood. If you ever have the opportunity to see Father John Misty live, do yourself a favor and say no. Let's get this out of the way first - FJM's voice is like liquid gold, and his music is very good. I don't mind his rather pessimistic outlook on mankind, and appreciate his honesty in that regard. BUT... this was without a doubt one of the strangest performances that I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing. He made zero effort whatsoever to engage the crowd. I got the sense that we were witnessing a regular Tuesday night in his living room... like he does these performances mostly for himself, and we just happened to be there. He'll go home later and evaluate the video making notes on his performance - all of the carefully choreographed looks and laughs, arms thrown in the air, down on his knees and back up again, then down on the knees again, the preening and prancing; this is a man who is completely and totally in love with himself. We kept waiting for some kind of climax to the show, and it just never came. It was just one similar self aggrandizing song after another - look how hot I am; don't you think I'm the most sexually desirable human to exist; you know you want me, and you would be so lucky to have me. Was this an act? Is he a caricature of himself? Is he trying to make some kind of statement? Upon reflection, I really don't care what his motives were in this performance; just get me out of here before I have to endure any more of it.

Josh Tillman, AKA Father John Misty, was the total package live. His live show was a mix of big band leader swagger, juxtaposed with quieter more somber moments. The show featured a catalog of songs ranging from social commentary of the human experience as well as the humorous premise of "bedding" Taylor Swift via Occulus Rift. His backing band was on point throughout the evening, following Tillman's lead and personality. Tillman was engaging, stopping to respond to shouts from the audience and those in the front row with smart phones. At one point, Tillman grabbed a front row audience members phone, and attempted to record the audience himself. The crowd took a minute to get warmed up, but a few songs deep the crowd seemed really into it.

The opening act could have done an end of episode number for Latest Twin Peaks if David Lynch had noticed her before booking someone else pretty ethereal. Father John is the real deal and one helluva poetic straight from the heart and soul to the throat vocalist and plays decent guitar. The band was phenomenal along with the stage design/ light crew. I have seen a lot of shows in my days. Being 16 in 1966 and catching as many acts as possible throughout the years I have become fairly picky about who I seek out to pay and see. I had caught FJ Misty on SNL and was intrigued. I figured it would be interesting but Instead of interesting it was unfreakin believable. The experience still seems a bit unreal to me. From the first number to the encore It heralded me back to Doors Concert I caught live in Detroit right after Kent State went down in May of 1970 only if Morrison had gotten clean and sober before his crash and burn. The crowd was close to fanatical but behaved enough that security didn't sense any danger or need to cler the isles. Father John Misty is perhaps the best writer, soulful singing showman presently out performing in small medium size venues at this time in space and his band is right on his ass with ever move and musical inflection. Catch em' if and while you can before the word really gets out. Hell they will probably get asked to open for the Stones. if available and willing. if they don't look out. Don't pass this show up even if you have to travel far and wide. Nothing is forever. Peace.

I didn't know what to expect from this show but I was blown away. Father John Misty has an amazing stage presence and all the songs were so intense live. I absolutely loved the show and I would not hesitate to travel again to see him (I drove in from Cleveland).

I don t know that the elderly ushers enjoyed the lyrics, but the show was great. Lobby of venue is rather small, but sound was good.
