Future Islands

Future Islands

FUTURE ISLANDS IN CONCERT:Synthpop darlings Futures Islands are masters of the kind of soaring, nostalgia-soaked anthems that are forever indebted to the '80s. That's not to say their music is stuck in a bygone decade -- frontman Sam Herring avoids the pitfalls of retro rehash with his tender, soulful vocals, and the band's twinkling synths and crisp drums are as oriented to the future as they are to the past. This is music that charges blissfully ahead to a driving beat, and the band's energy always keeps pace as they tear through buoyant tracks like "Balance" and "A Dream of You and Me" on their must-see tours.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Future Islands was formed in 2006 by a group of students from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

To say that Future Islands was amazing is a true understatement. Everyone at the Fox theater was overjoyed and completely in the moment the entirety of their set. Sam Herring is the best frontman I've ever seen, for this band they care about the experience for everyone in the room. A true expression of art combined with the beauty of their music.

The Orpheum has so much potential but I can't help feeling dirty any time I sit in those seats. That is my only complaint. Future Islands, though, phenomenal! I fell in love with these guys all over again. They gave it their all and were extremely humble. Sam, you thanked us but seriously, Thank You! Please come back soon!

It would have been the best concert (so far), if people wouldn't kept walking on stage. I HATE IT. Samuel doesn't need all that "dancing" around him. He is such a strong performer that having all that people on stage was just awful and it ruined the show for the others. ("JUST GET OFF OF THE STAGE ALREADY AND LET THE MAN SING!!!) Some people are way to selfish to understand when to back off.

This is one of the greatest shows I have ever been to. The crowd was really into the whole set and the opening acts were also great. I really enjoyed seeing Skimask outside of an Allston basement!

Gotta say, Future Islands lived up to my high expectations. I was told they rocked live and had some seriously good energy. I was really excited to see them and hoped that I would not be disappointed. The lead man is a whirlwind of sincere sweeping energy. They are kinda loud, but not in a bad way. There was even some dancing!

This band has everything they need to become masters of the universe. Gerrit (keys) and William (bass) stand like pillars of some great temple of worship while Sam puts on the lightning show front and center. Best shows I've seen in a long time in New York, and the Bowery. And to top it off, the audience was actually entertained (NY audiences over the past few years have become so boring looking and dis-interested, it seems).

All I can say is that what I expected and what I experienced was unlike any show I'd seen. Sam kills it. I've never seen a front man own a show more than him. The conviction of his performance is unreal. I will be seeing them front row when they come back.

I was excited about seeing Future Islands because I've been a big fan of their music for many years. I was happy to hear they sold out the venue, and was looking forward to a great live show to end the week. I was slightly hesitant because I consider myself picky about live music and how it sounds, and I've seen live videos of them online and it didn't sound good at all. Not even on their late night appearances. But, I thought, "In person they will be better." Now, I love a deep, rich sound that sends goosebumps down my spine. I like to hear a drum beat that's not "tinny", crisp keyboards, deep bass lines, and a singer's voice that's clear and blends nicely with the music being played behind him/her. I've seen amazing-sounding bands like Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Rush, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead and Sigur Ros (#1 show ever). I've also seen many indie bands live, including Bon Iver, Band of Horses, The Decemberists, Death Cab \u2014 even a band called Mac Sabbath (check them out if you're a Black Sabbath fan!). ALL of those shows had amazing sound quality, so I kind of expect to hear that every time. Not the case here. I wanted to hear Sam's unique voice more clearly but I couldn't make out a single word he was singing. The keyboards were thin, and the drums didn't seem amplified to create a rich beat. Every once in a while I'd hear this random bass sound out of nowhere and it was really starting to bother me. It was just a MESS. I found myself more annoyed than anything, so I decided to leave, even before they played "Seasons" which was my favorite song. I was completely bummed and disappointed. My husband has no idea who Future Islands were, so the day after, I played "Seasons" for him in the car. I said, "I was hoping hearing them in person would be clear and crisp like this!" and he pointed out that even the recorded version sounds "thin". So now I think the whole FI experience is ruined for me. (sigh) A lot of people said they enjoyed the show, though. Maybe I am just too picky and jaded! POSITIVES: Sam was very charismatic and the setlist was great. Also, I was impressed with Zack Mexico who actually sounded really, really great! I was even able to give in-person accolades to a few of the band members who were standing next to me during FI's setlist.

I discovered Future Islands a year or two ago and since then I've heard from others that although their album recordings are great, seeing them perform live is a whole other experience in itself. They were right! So much passion and energy on stage! The frontman Sam Herring seriously looked like he was about to cry in the middle of some songs. The whole show just made me love their music even more.

A good, solid band, sorely let down by a repertoire of tunes that all sounded pretty much the same, but, most of all, by an atrocious singer, with a poor voice and next to no vocal range. And that's without mentioning the appalling mixing, and, as always at Terminal 5, the poor acoustics and the ill mannered audience.

A band on the upswing. Maybe not their fault BUT the sound was muddled. A good part of the time the vocals were buried in the instrumental sound. Lets face it the overall sound of the band revolves around the singers' vocals and his dancing. As a result this has to be showcased.

I saw Future Islands at the Monterey First City Festival and it was without a doubt the best performance out of all the bands there, the energy was high and they showed everyone how it was done, i will never forget that day because of them and i would LOVE to see them many more times, if you have a chance to see them, GO :)

This show was perfection. The sound at this small but substantial venue was exceptional. The band ignited the audience and everyone was dancing and singing along. I love that Future Islands has a wonderful simplicity to them. No weird costumes, or wild lights. Just their talent and their passion for their work. Love, love, love! So glad we drove up from Boston to see them in Portland instead of going to Boston Calling. The intimate setting made all the difference.

Boy oh boy. Portland was great. I think I tore an important muscle in my knee. I'm not mad at anybody though. Not sure if it was from one of my sweet leg kicks or rad air jam glides. Anyway, I had one of the best nights of my life. The end.

There is no way to go wrong seeing Future Islands. This was my fourth time seeing them and I just want more!! Webster Hall is a fine venue. It was my third time there and I've always enjoyed the show. All of the staff and security I've encountered have been very pleasant people to deal with and the drinks are solid. For $17 I had a double Makers and ginger ale and it did the trick. One more after that and it was time to quit. There isn't much of any place to sit, but that's to be expected, you're not there to sit, you're there to dance! And dance we did. Oh man, Future Islands rocks my world every single time. At the end I just wished I could press replay and do it all again! The opening acts were awesome too. Many good times.

I've seen many bands play, but this one was the best thus far. The music was on point There was plenty of dancing and a lot of romantic energy in the room. The lead singer knows how to put on a show, keeping the crowd involved the whole time.
