Wilco

WILCO IN CONCERT: Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”.

I can't believe I am saying this since I have been seeing Wilco for 20 years. There is no doubt that these guys are consummate professionals. The sound was great, everyone was on point. So why was I almost bored at times? It might be that these guys play almost the same exact setlist every night... you can see it in their demeanor on stage. Even they look slightly bored. Jeff didn't say anything to the audience until 45 minutes into the show. That being said, if you've never seen these guys play before, it's totally worth it. Just don't plan on following them around the country on tour, because you are going to get bored really quickly... I still remember some of the shows from the late 90's where you literally didn't know what was going to happen on stage. Yes, it was sloppier. Yes, it was chaotic. But it was so much more FUN than what it is now. I still remember in '98 when they took a break from the stage and asked random people from the audience to come up and jam together. Then 3 minutes after those guys started playing, they snuck back on stage and became their backing band. THAT'S what a fun show looks like. I still love Wilco, but I really do miss the good old days.

Fantastic night. Wilco was great. They played for over 2 hours, including 2 encores. The historic venue, Coronado Thearter, was beautiful and the acoustics were awesome.

A great performance last night from Wilco! The band fed off the energy from the hyped-up crowd and blasted through their vast repertoire of songs. I've seen some great shows at Red Rocks, and this ranks up there with some of the best!

Wilco continues to amaze their fans in this latest show. The band is tight yet playful and Jeff Tweedy is in fine voice as always. Nels Cline is truly an outstanding guitarist and the rest of the band is up to his level on every tune. They played for 2 1/2 hours and I could have listened for another hour.

Everything came together on Friday night. The weather was perfect, and the backdrop, with Denver's lights sparkling, a gibbous moon, and fireworks going off all over the city, was magical. OK, Wilco didn't have any control over that. But, as usual, this fantastic band showed amazing generosity, giving the crowd a great concert and several encores, mixing new material with old favorites. They were in top form, and most of the crowd showed its appreciation. There were a few negatives, all having to do with the crowd, but grousing about them would be small-minded, considering what a great concert it was.

This concert was a real shame for me. As a true Wilco fan, it pains me that so many people treated this show like a party. If all you want to do is smoke your nasty $5 an ounce pot and chug Keystone Lights while talking loudly to your neighbor about how "F-ing stoned!" you are, please save your money for the next meaningless jam band show you want to attend. In contrast to the crowd, Wilco performed great, with Jeff Tweedy lighting up the stage. There were some real treats, including a wonderful Impossible Germany and plenty of old school Wilco ballads. The opening number from the new CD "Wilco Loves You" was a killer opener. If I hadn't felt so sick from all of the smoke, I would have been able to stay through the whole show. Unfortunately, disrespectful fans made this show a real waste of my money. Hardcore fans beware...

I've gone to ever Wilco tour since "Being There" and last night's show was the best one I've seen since! Outstanding! Even though we had to park a mile away it was worth it. They played songs from their entire catalog and the show was nearly three hours long. You always get your money's worth at a Wilco show! Wilco loves you baby!!!

Jeff tweety proves once again that his esoteric lyrics and songwriting are unparalleled in rock music. Every song had some form of delight. The ampitheater is probably the best outdoor music place on the globe but having been to so many at that venue I can start with a level playing field. There were two rockin lead guitars often dueling for attention and the talent was obvious. Nils was particularly querky but at the same time awesome. The crowd seemed somewhat subdued at first but after a few strategic hooks by the keyboard player (who also doubled as the second lead guitar), no on was able to stay seated. (except of course, the shroom eaters who were not sure where they were) There were several jumps in time from 1994 to the present and even a mention of a new album but it was not shamelessly promoted and if you knew the recording you sang along. All in all, quite enjoyable and captured me as a huge fan even though going in I was only a casual observer. I will relisten to many songs with renewed rapture!

Wilco isn't one of these acts that comes out for 90 minutes and then knock off. Jeff Tweedy and company play for a full three hours and they obviously enjoy their work. Nice blend of material from their latest release plus an excellent overview of their older material.

Wow! What an incredibly talented band. I hopped on the bandwagon a little late. But I was really excited to see these guys for the first time. And they did not disappoint. Jeff was really engaged with the crowd. Nels Cline was absolutely amazing on guitar. The entire band was so tight throughout the entire show, thrilling the crowd with a number of songs from their earlier albums. Truly impressive to see a band of such professional musicians.

This was my eighth Wilco show, and it was the best in several ways. 1) Historical. They played old songs I hadn't heard them play before (e.g., Can't Stand It and Casino Queen). 2) Traditional. They played the two songs I've heard every time (Jesus, etc., which Jeff let us sing almost entirely by ourselves and I'm The Man Who Loves You). 3) Memorable. a) Jeff's interaction with the crowd included calling the fashion police on a man wearing the shiniest gold button down shirt I've ever seen, and then proceeded to trade shirts with him. b) The opening act, Liam Finn, a duo of multi-instrumentalists, engaged the crowd and interacted with Wilco. 4) Remarkable. For a 15 year old band comprised of only two original members, Wilco plays as tightly and puts on as good a show as anyone. You won't be disappointed when you listen to Wilco (the album) and attend Wilco (the show).

This was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. I don't know if it was the awesome new venue, or the fact that I didn't have to drive 60 miles, but by the time the concert was ready to start I was super excited. One of the highlights of the show was during the song Impossible Germany when Jeff's guitar went out during Nels' solo. Nels continued to solo while they worked on Jeff's gear for a good 5 minutes or so. Even with that little technical difficultly the band seemed to be in good spirits throughout the night. I look forward to seeing more shows at the newly renovated Fox Theater in Pomona, and seeing Wilco where ever that may be.

There s something about taking the train to Coney Island where just before Surf Avenue, a feeling of excitement seems to overtake whatever your mood might be. Is it the roar and rickets of the Cyclone, the loose planks of the boardwalk, the smell of those famous foot long franks or just the mere nostalgia of what once used to be a bustling thoroughfare of adventure? Whatever your experience, tonight was no different. In fact, for me, that feeling was amplified knowing that in just a few minutes, one of the greatest American rocks bands of my time would perform live to a sold out crowd of thousands. Greeted by the feedback driven noise and sweet melodic riffs of opener Yo La Tengo, I stepped foot onto the field of Keyspan Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the New York Mets. Nestled snug along New York s Atlantic coast, the stadium is small, and officially seats fewer than 8,000. But open the field level to thousands of eager rock n roll fans, and that number easily doubles. With the sun beating down, Hoboken s own tore through tracks both new and old. Mr. Tough, Autumn Sweater, From a Motel 6 and Tom Courtney, were evenly spread through the band s one-hour opening set. All in all, a great offering of lo-fi rock from a group that has the catalog to play for hours on end. As Yo La s crew cleared the stage, one slow pan around the park and you could easily feel the excitement beginning to mount. It was a perfect July night; a cool ocean breeze complimented the pink and orange swirls of the sky above, as vendors alike passed through the crowd with beer, hot dogs and cracker jacks, another element that added to the aura of an already great American pastime-like theme. Suddenly, the lights dimmed and Wilco took the stage in patriotic style. Opening with their defiant and lively whirling guitar driven new single slugged Wilco (The Song), it was immediately clear from the band s initial energy that they would be in for extra innings. As the song came to a close, the Chicago six-piece maneuvered directly into I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, the sprawling mix of feedback and fuzz that opens 2002 s critically acclaimed Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. To follow was the soundtrack ready anthem, A Shot in the Arm, the first of three tracks that would be played from 1999 s often overlooked Summerteeth record. From there, the band would settle to perform songs from their latest release, Wilco (The Album), which hit stores this past June. Taking that as a cue for a quick bathroom break or to grab that second overpriced beer, the audience seemed off, perhaps unfamiliar with the new material such as the nerve racking Bull Black Nova, or slide-driven twang of Deeper Down. Whatever it was, it didn t last for long as the opening to Sky Blue Sky s popular gem Impossible Germany echoed about, causing the crowd to perk, attent and ready for Nels Cline to lay down the spastically sweet guitar licks the song offers up. At that point, it felt like the opportune time to take a step back and retire to the seats. Like a true baseball fan watching his favorite slugger at bat, I lounged back and relaxed, as the Wurlitzer induced slow jam Jesus Etc. rolled through the crisp summer air. It was at that moment the simplistic nature of a Wilco show became absolutely clear, and the setting couldn t be more perfect. Sure, put the band in a historic theater and the sound is phenomenal, but watch them perform outdoors, and you come to appreciate just how down to earth they really are this is how Wilco was meant to be seen. The show, now 17 songs deep, brought the band back to 2004 s A Ghost is Born to close out their set with an audience sing-along to the ever popular and pleasantly charming Hummingbird. But, being the true workhorses Jeff Tweedy and company have always been, the show was far from over. Returning for the first of two encores, Wilco launched the crowd into frenzy with the joyous jangle of Foxtrot s Heavy Metal Drummer. For the next few numbers, the stage would see some new faces, beginning with special guest Feist, who tagged alongside Tweedy for a calming display of You and I, fresh off Wilco (The Album). Up next, Feist would join forces with indie rock s Ed (Grizzly Bear) Droste to help deliver the harmonic backups to California Stars, a track that appears on the 1998 Billy Bragg & Wilco joint Woody Guthrie project, Mermaid Avenue. Bringing their effort to a close, the guests would end with the new pop driven jam You Never Know. Still though, there was more fun in store, as openers Yo La Tengo stepped on stage to round things out for an epic 13-minute jam of Spiders (Kidsmoke). Emerging from their last and final break, Wilco launched into The Late Greats, one of the best and most energetic tracks of the evening. But it was not before another trip back to Mermaid Avenue with Hoodoo Voodoo that the band finally packed up and said their goodbyes to what was truly an impressive and solid display of musical talent.

Loved this show and the venue is really nice. It was a perfect summer evening. My only criticism with the venue is that it seems as though there was not enough staff inside the amphitheater and the place was filled to capacity. Areas that should have been somewhat clear so that you could get through were mobbed with people. This was my first Wilco show and I'll be seeing them again when they come to town. They were fantastic!

The concert was truly amazing. I´m from Brazil and on this trip to the US decided to pay a short visit to Vegas just for the show. I´m glad I did. Wilco is pure energy, the songs are beautiful and the setlist was huge... two and a half hours of real fun for the eyes and ears. The only setback was The Joint´s security policies, totally exagerated and completely absurd in my opinion since I was attending a rock concert. Well, I guess that´s the price you have to pay for being in a concert in a hotel, even if this hotel is The Hard Rock Hotel.

The Joint is just so fantastic to see incredibly talented artists like Wilco. The sound was pristine and admittedly it's hard to tell if it was the venue or the band, but if you have a fave band and they play the Joint in Vegas, it's a must see. I am leaning towards the band, just in case you were wondering. Great mix of songs. Wilco always seems to do a good job in that field. Or maybe it's because every song is amazing thanks to Tweedy (I do realize he is not always the only one who writes the stuff). Wrap up: An incredible night filled with glorious music from a polished band. Wilco will love you, baby.

First we must get this out of the way. Yo La Tengo was awful. Arid and flat. I'm sure somebody appreciates them but you will find no love here. Moving on to what is of great import - Wilco was breathtakingly brilliant. This is the third time I have had the joy of seeing them live and this was by far the most soul extending. These boys are masters. Every moment seeming perfection. Every movement dedicated and energetic. A fantastic setlist with enough tunes from the new album as well as old crowd pleasers. I requested "I'm Always in Love" on wilcoworld.net and they played it. Needless to say, I freaked and sang along very loudly. I loved when they had Leslie Feist come on and sing during their encore (there were two by the way) and though Y.L.T. was dreadful, I did like that Tweedy invited them on stage to play a tune at the end. Very classy. Beautiful. Brilliant. I want more now please.

Such a unique band or maybe more unique songs. A great musical experience with Wilco that brings out all the bands talents. The Pageant is a great venue for Wilco's music to grab the fans. While this band could sell out arenas, they stay true to who they are and understand who they are. Wilco had already played multiple dates in Texas and then Memphis before hitting Birmingham, Atlanta, and Asheville. These dates would be among the last by the band for a while, having announced no touring in 2018. So, we drove from Virginia to Birmingham to Atlanta to Asheville. Birmingham was the first night of our mini-tour and the band did not disappoint. Full disclosure, we are pretty big fans of this band. But additional truth: we are capable of critical analysis. So when I say the band was really good, I MEAN that the band was really good. Some of the set was easily predicted from experience but performed really well. Some interesting touches were revealed: a lot more acoustic version of Via Chicago, Pat's increased guitar playing throughout the set, and of course the Tom Petty cover, "The Waiting" (which was terrific and sad all at once) The Alabama theater is pretty cool. We knew very little about Birmingham and it has some nice touches but the theater is classic...especially it's neon "ALABAMA" GREAT SIGN! Wilco is Wilco...you shoud learn to love them because Jeff's songs are performed by one of the best live shows in rock and roll today. You almost might forget how great a guitar player Jeff Tweedy really is when you see Nel's killing it over at stage right or Pat's leads on the Petty tribute. But Jeff is a real player and Glen is a world class drummer (exceptional live, every night) and together with Mikael and John they just groove. Go see Wilco.

It is harder (I would say impossible, but I have not seen everyone) to find a band that is tighter than Wilco. I have been a little disappointed in the last few Wilco albums, but NEVER in their shows. Wilco is a safe ticket. You will always get a good show and this time was no exception. Before a sold out crowd that knew the words to virtually every song, Wilco moved through a set that included songs from almost every album. After finishing the regular set, they returned for an encore of five soings. And then came back a second time with a two song encore, including paying respects to Tom Petty by covering "The Waiting" and sounding a lot like Tom. Highlights incldued "Impossible Germany" with the stunning guitar work of Nils Cline, "Hate it Here" and 15 songs from the four best albums. Almost two and a half hours of great music.

This was the fifth time I have seen Wilco. They have always been great. They are better than ever. This was the best show I have seen. They are very confident in their playing, so much so that they change the set list every night, even digging down into Uncle Tupelo material. All of the band members are masters of their instruments. Special mentions go to Glen Kotche, who bangs on the drums all day with tremendous force; and Nels Cline who enthralls with soaring solos that change each time. The real surprise was Pat Sansone, the multi-instrumentalist. He thrilled with his guitar solos, holding his own on a solo duel with Cline that was simply amazing. These guys are the best.

Seen em numerous times and this one might just be my favorite. 31 songs. Busted out a song I'd been chasing, Either Way. I scored a setlist too. Perfect night. However, I don't like seated Wilco shows. Wish they'd play more general admission shows in Dallas.

Wilco, as a band is at the top of their form right now. I have been a fan since 1994 so I know. Hearing each song is like unwrapping a gift, there are many levels of enjoyment to be had. The new ones finding their place in the set, the old ones standing the test of time. There isn't much in life that makes me happier than a Wilco show. The fact that is was late September, a full moon and at the Hollywood Bow,l only made it that much better. It was a perfect night. The kind that makes all the other mundane bullshit you go through in life worth it.

The six-piece band ALWAYS put in a great Show!!! I have to say the crowd was a very boring crowd...nothing new, is Hollywood but I saw Wilco many times before and never was with a crowd like Sunday. All of my previews show were in small venues, the vibe was more cozy and the Fans more Upbeat. *Nels Cline was in FUEGO!!

Wilco sported a perfect rock'n'roll setlist. They played everything from "Box Full of Letters" to to "Via Chicago" to "Capital City Skyline"; perfect time-line. They balanced the moods with great skill and, overall, put on an excellent show.

The show was awesome. The sound was amazing as well as the stage and lighting design. I took my friend who had never been toa Wilco show. He said it was one of the best live shows he'd been to. I have a friend who went with me to the Greek in '07 and he said the same thing.

Wilco opened their tour for the Whole Love in Denver to a sellout under the chandeliers. After a warm up song (Poor Places) the band launched into Art of Almost and never looked back. Tweedy sounded great, except for a defective harmonica, and the lights and stage set were simply beautiful. This is my favorite venue to see Wilco, it was great, even with a $10 PBR in my hand!

Intimate venue. It's rare that you get a better proformance live than on the album, but that is what happened here. The speaker tower blocked my view of Nels Cline which was especially dissapointing when i was straining to see the magical face melter in action.

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre was an AMAZING venue for the Wilco show! I had not previously attended an event there and was very impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the overall appearance of the venue. Wilco played an INCREDIBLE set, which is not any surprise to a HUGE fan, but the sound was very well done. Nick Lowe did a GREAT job opening!

This show was almost exactly as I expected. My first time going to the MPAC. The lights were great. I was shocked at how good the music sounded in the room. The venue had a very modern, intimate feel. It was really clean - which my wife enjoyed. Had a great time drinking some delicious drinks (made by very courteous bartenders) and listening to some of the best.

The venue was seated and seemingly without A/C. Also it was on campus at UNT so there was no alcohol served. Very strange!!! Jeff Tweedy asked everyone why they weren't filling up the area in front of the stage and i took my cue to move from row S all the way down to right behind the front rail (right in time for Impossible Germany). Security was pretty lax (which was a pleasant surprise). I was a little disappointed that they didn't play their new single, but they did play some songs that i wasn't all that familiar with so it all evens out. I saw them a few years ago and they played a much different setlist. I will definitely be brushing up on my Wilco jams. NOTE: I was near the guy audio recording the event. I found the recording on the net and it's good quality. Sorry to the big dude that i had to push out of the way for a setlist. I had to go over the rail to grab it. You gotta love a band that makes a poster for every show. Score!

Wilco is one of my favorite bands. This show was particularly thrilling because it was in a smaller venue and I was able to get up very close to see them. Jeff is a great front man, very charming as well as talented. He even got the security to allow the crowd to advance up to the barracades (for some reason security was attempting to keep everyone 3 feet off them).

Having never been to a concert in Montgomery, we were blown away by this venue, the surrounding area and (predictably) the band. The adjoining hotel makes this great-sounding room a must. Wilco were spot on. "Airline To Heaven" was sumptuous. "Impossible Germany" flirted with jam band nirvana. Their atmospheric sound suits the true concert hall experience.

Having been convinced I wouldn't stand a chance getting good seats at a Chicago Wilco peformance at UIC, found myself in the 6th row front center! Thank you birdy! Not gonna say much about their opening act, Tortoise, except that most Wilco fans were non-responsive. One of their 3 drummers/guitarist/keyboard players had tried to initiate an audience interactive handclap at the end of one of their vocal-less melodic noise rock tunes to no avail. Pretty songs, but too long to be without a singer. Wilco opened up their last North American peformance in their headquarters of Chicago with "Summerteeth" classic, "Via Chicago." If you ever wanna go to a concert where most everyone knows ALL the lyrics to ALL the songs and gleefully sings along throughout the whole performance, that's exactly what you will find at a Wilco show. Every now and then a drunken admirer would attempt to squeeze in front of me. There's that desperate look in their eyes. Like without a word, all you hear is "Please, please, I must get closer." I overhear the guy to my right who had respectfully earned his elite seating status by standing in place an hour before the show started say, "You just got here at a really bad time" to one of them. You had the "moog" t-shirt roadie guy, who plays the role of Tweedy's guitar servant, exchanging guitars after each and every song. I Love their collection of equipment. I even love their oriental rug. I love Glenn Kotche's wristbands and Nels' big boots. I love Wilco the band. I love the fact that Tweedy is smiling throughout the entire night. I love watching them get better and better and better at this. Like an all-star line-up of some of the most note-worthy musicianship coupled with the most heartfelt lyrics and melodies this fan has ever heard. You'd think they'd be sick of playing "I am trying to break your heart" or "Passenger's Side" (A most "recent" first album release as Tweedy claims after he throws a copy of "A.M" just slightly to my left. I don't even try as the vulterous music lovers wrestle for it.) But it is clear to me that these are the songs that never lose their luster - and as I witness the band perform their older material as if the songs are brand new, I also believe them. Some other timeless tracks that were performed from last nights show : "Casino Queen", "Kamera", "Side with the Seeds", "Walken", "Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)", "Can't stand it", "Far, far away", "Handshake drugs", "Impossible Germany"(a poem turned song from Tweedy's book, "Adult Head"), "Hate it Here", "Hummingbird", "The Late Greats", the crowd boppin' "Spiders(Kidsmoke)"...to name a few. The chosen songs from their latest self-titled album are as follows: "One Wing", Bull Black Nova", You Never Know", Country Disappeared", "I'll Fight", "Sonny Feeling". And of course, the song that Tweedy forever dedicates to former Lounge Ax co-owner wife Sue, "I'm the Man who Loves you." A discography where no two songs sound the same, I am forever impressed by what they have contributed to modern music. A band that has survived and kept true to their musical integrity. These guys are really special and everyone knows it. A must have in your collection. Like the Velvet Underground and Nico of the current. Tweedy jokes to the man in the Blackhawks hat for not clapping along, insisting that it's good for your arms and also part of the Blackhawks warm-up. He also talked about the "rule" that you always tell the current audience they are better than the last. The girls from behind scream ,"I LOVE YOU". All in all, my favorite concert yet. My favorite band still...

Wilco can be compared to no other band. They are the most eclectic group of musicians who interact with their instruments on a completely different level. Tweedy's lyrics are deep and well thought out and he has an uncanny stage presence. They mesh well with the crowd and are you kidding me...two encores? Brilliant.

It was excellent! My wife and I went; I am more of a Wilco fan than she is, and I was nervous that the show might be too...powerful for her. I kept looking over to find her bopping her head, jamming along even to songs she didn't know, which is so gratifying. The stuff from the new album already feels timeless, and there were moments when Wilco weaved songs between Shmilco with older favorites that made me shake my head in appreciation. The tightness and excellence with which they played was awe-inspiring. My wife and I were so charged up by the end of the show that afterwards, we discussed taking guitar lessons as a result. I'm glad the songs hewed closely to the album versions, but were not robotic replays of them. The clarity, facility and perfection of the arrangements were really something to watch, and even the sonic freakouts were almost scary to behold. The set design was subtle yet unforgettable, as if the band was playing in a copse of trees at all times of day and night, at all times of the year. The set designer was standing just near us behind sound board, and when Jeff Tweedy called her out to thank her, the crowd around us applauded long and lustily: she did such a beautiful job. Speaking of soundboard, the guy running the stage lights was as tight as the musicianship on display, which always enhances the show. All in all, I would recommend you go see Wilco if you have the chance.

Started with Wilco lite numbers with Tweedy in good voice and then launched into full blown Wilco classics that highlighted the musical talents of each group member. The audience was literally pulverized by the force of the music. Tweedy enjoyed interacting with the audience and the feeling was mutual. By contrast, Clapton on Sunday night said "good evening" and that was it. He gave the impression that he didn't care to be there and wanted to leave as soon as possible. Gary Clarke Jr was the highlight of the evening and played with more passion than Clapton who played as if he already retired.
