This was a beautiful yet sad story about addiction and the distress it can place on family & friends. Lynn Whitfield & the entire cast's performance were pivotal to its success. I loved Marvin Gaye, now I have a better understanding of what happened the day of his death. Zeola Gayle did a great job in telling the story that was possibly a difficult task. Great play. Hopefully, she will be able to redo the play after she attains the rights to use Marvin's music. I will see it Again! Great job Clifton Powell and the wonderful producer who believed in the storyline.

This show was produced and written very well. All of the actors were phenomenal in each act. Great songs and memories of the Motown days. This is a great play for families of all ages.

Was truly disappointed expected to hear some old Motown songs and Marvin Gaye originals. I guess they were not able to get misic rights released from Motown. Only heard "similar" to songs which was dissappointing.

We love Marvin Actors was great to use what they had to use ..... Release Marvins music and it will be a 5 star play................

this screenplay had good intentions but should not have received the greenlight to be produced if his music was not able to be played in the show. marvin was his music. you can't make a movie, screenplay, or anything without it. this is not the fault of zeola or the producers, but it was definitely lacking something major! as creative as the band tried to be, they couldn't compensate. there were scenes that did not flow with the storyline. perhaps this should have been left alone in the book format. acting and dancing was mediocre. maybe more practice rehearslas? lynn whitfield was good.

The play was ok but disappointing because we didn't hear Marvin Gaye's songs. That was the purpose of going. They had simulated songs. It was a long play that didn't tell us nothing we didn't already know. I thought we were going to get something different. Enjoyed actors.

My date and I totally enjoyed this show! The cast was EXCELLENT and extremely talented. It's a story of Marvin Gaye's life including the Motown years. It shows the good and bad, including his drug addiction and family life. The moral of the story is this: Talent, fame and fortune sometimes can't take away dysfunction. I recommend this show to anyone who knows the hazards of being a performer, anyone who loves Marvin Gaye's music or Motown. I would see this show again. Well done Zeola! (one of Marvin's 12 siblings!)

I enjoyed the play but I didn't like how they didn't play any of marvin songs he has made some wonderful music and they didn't play any of his songs I just found that wired its a play about his life and they didn't allow his music to play it might have been a money issue and there where a couple times when the play was skippin parts and you had to guess what was goin on but I still enjoyed the message that was behind it Only other thing is I wish they would inforce if your not on time you wouldn't get in to the play its so rude for people to be movin around while the event is startin JUST RUDE

I was truly entertained and I learned a lot about mr. Gaye's life. It was a tragic situation his untimely death, but it was truly great to learn the truth as to what really happened. The music was great and Lynn Whitfield and Clifton Powell did an amazing job. Also, Keith Washington and all the other singers in the play. It was well worth the time and the money. Kudos to Marvin Gaye's sister great job.

I was so disappointed my wife and I don't get out much she works a lot and I just started a business so I took her to see my brother Marvin thought we would hear some songs from Marvin. But not one song was sang. It was a great story, killed by lack of preparation people laughed at parts that should have been serious.

THIS PLAY WAS INSPIRATING , EMOTIONAL , UPLIFTING , TOUCHING, AND IT HIT ME HARD WHAT I SEEN AND WENT THROUGH IN MY LIFE AS A CHILD GROWING UP INSIDE OF MY HOUSE , WHAT I HAD TO ENDURE GROWING UP AS A CHILD, WHEN I LOOK BACK AT WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN MY HOME AND KNOWING EVERYTHING THAT HAPPEN WAS BRUSHED UNDER THE RUG, AND NEVER TALKED ABOUT AGAIN , I PROMISE MYSELF WHEN I HAVE MY KIDS THAT I WOULD BREAK THIS CYCLE IN MY LIFE , AND NOW I HAVE CHILDREN I HAVE BROKEN THE CYCLE AND MOVED ON . , BUT THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO DO THAT IS BECAUSE I HAVE FORGIVING MY PAST AND MORE ON WITH MY FUTURE, GOD IS AWESOME .

The second time around was even better. I saw the play in Philadelphia, and it was new, but has gotten better with some changes. I was very well versed on what the play was about, and that Zeola was not able to use Marvins' music, however the story was told well. The actors and other performers were all Great! Also the music portion was done much better, And my favorite was Teddy P. Love You Teddy!!!

I enjoyed the play. It was interesting to learn details about that terrible day in history. I can remember that day so clear. This play was very good. I would recommend everyone at least go see. They were not allowed to perform any Motown songs of Marvin, but the singing that was allowed was GREAT. Keith Washington, Lynn Whitfield, and Clifton Powell did Marvelous jobs. The performances attributing to other artists such as Teddy P, Tina Turner, and Glady's Knight were also done tastefully. My husband and I had a very good time.

A stage play that suppose to take you through events leading up to the final gun shot that fatally ended Marvin's life. Based on the book, My Brother Marvin which includes handwrittn excerpts by Marvin and a memoir by his younger sister, Zeola Gaye. The 2013 cast includes the Oscar Nominee, Lynn Whitfield as Marvin s mother (Alberta Gaye), Clifton Powell (Marvin Gaye Sr), Keith Washington (Marvin Gaye), Tony Grant (Played Marvin in his younger years) and Lia Grant (Tammi Terrell & Tina Turner), Michael Knowlton (David Ruffin). Clifton Powell, Lynn Whitfield, Keith Washington each were good. Overall I feel the play was not good. Lame. There should have been a disclaimer in advance prior to purchasing tickets stating no songs of Marvin will be used in play. Rather than disclosed such info at the end of show. The So call Motown songs that were used in play I never heard of such lyrics in my life. Used songs with beats and melodies that sound similar like original songs and lyrics that's familiar. However, there were noticeable differences. A pure case of deception. The end was plain awful. I stop taking pictures.

What a great story told by Marvin's sister. They all did a wonderful job, the cast, production, band, directing. It was brilliant. I recently read "Divided Soul, The Life of Marvin Gaye" written by Marvin Gaye & David Ritz. Zeola Gaye's play "My Brother Marvin" is basically identical to Marvin's own words. The 3 actors that play Marvin capture his essence - Havier Roller (teenage Marvin), Tony Grant (young adult Marvin) & Keith Washington (adult Marvin). In particular, Tony Grant's voice is absolutely amazing...in fact, I don't understand why he's not a famous recording artist in his own right??? (If Berry Gordy were still in the music business, he would make Tony Grant a star). Lynn Whitfield & Clifton Powell are perfect as Marvin's parents! We get to see them fall in & out of love and the reasons why. We also see the intensity between Marvin & his father from childhood until the end. Everyone else was great! I do hope Zeola gets the rights to use the music - of the musical genius, her brother Marvin Gaye! My prayer is for them to get the producer & director that made "Ray" Charles movie to bring Marvin Gaye's life story to the big screen...introducing the man & his music to a whole new generation...

This was very shameful and deceptive on the part of Zeola. I am not sure of the intentions; however I was completely disappointed in the play. I believed that I would hear Marvin Gaye's music and learn something that I did not know; not the case. It wasn't bad enough that I could hear due to technical difficulties, but putting your family's dirty laundry on display for profit is distasteful and very embarrassing. I am in the opinion of if Marvin himself didn't not "put it out there." Zeola should have left if alone; and anyway I never heard anything about her until UnSung.....My prayers are with her and the production company

Absolutely loved the play! Surprised that the story was told without any sugar-coating. It was real. Although it would have been the ultimate to have his (Marvin's) music, I like that there were some other artists music that was shared. Hope Zeola gets the music for future plays, that will be all she needs to make it that much better!

The talent, music and production was very good. The guy who played Marvin Sr. was very funny and Lynn Whitfield is one of my favorite actresses. The actor playing the role of Marvin Gayle as an adult has beautiful and smooth vocals. He was convincing in his role as Marvin Jr. That said, the one problem I had with the show was the inability of the performers to sing any of the songs that was recorded by Marvin Gaye. It was announced at the beginning of the show of a copyright problem. Ms. Gayle spoke at the close of the show about her failed attempts to acquire the use of Marvin Gaye's music for her production. I would not have purchased a ticket for this show if I had known this information in advance. Even though I was disappointed, I' am please to have been able to support performing arts by my attendance.

The whole design for all of the scenes were great, and even though Mr. Gaye's personal songs were not able to be sung, the songs that were performed were excellent as well. I was happy to see that the book I read (autobiography) was very close to Zeola Gaye's perspective. As close as it was, I still learned things about Marvin Gaye's life that I didn't know. The play was great from what I could enjoy and see. Unfortunately the entire show we had people trapsing across us the entire time. I'm so use to venues closing off the doors until scene changes to allow people in so they do not disturb the actors as well as event goers. Due to this mishap in service I have to down grade the play score. I should have paid more money to see this at the Pantasias Theatre.

The play was a big waste of time. Without any of Marvin's music in it, it was like the "big elephant in the room. It felt like a big gaping hole in the story. I believe the play put too much emphasis on the life of Marvin's Gaye's father. Did the world need to know the truth about a man who had raised his children and was now dead? Although I loved Marvin Gaye, what about all the things he did wrong or did Zeola only think her Dad was a bad person. Let's lay blame on everyone concerned in this sage - Zeolaa just became sober in the last 11 years. Wow and you want to talk about your Dad's life as a cross-dresser and womanizer? And to top it off, no music of Marvin's played. Had that been "advertised," I wouldn't have wasted my time as I thought

I expected to hear someone performing Marvin Gaye's music. I felt a little cheated. If you were not allowed to use his music, I felt someone should have been up front and said so in ticket promotion. Honesty is the best policy. Might not be the most profitable, but still the best. The Actors/Actresses and dancers were fantastic. Marvin Gaye was who he was because of his music not because of his family. If I could only understand or appreciate why some songs were written or recorded. I left the theater feeling sorry for what happened to Marvin Gaye Jr and feeling sorry for his disfunctional family. But, who isn't disfunctional. Hiding behind disfunction,(religion) and jealously caused Marvin Gaye Jr untimely death.

Hats off to Zeola Gaye and the cast of this play. Although Zeola was unable to use any of her brother's music/songs in the play, it was still a grand hit! When something as tragic happens as in the case of Marvin Gaye, his fans want to know what happened because they loved him and I believe people were genuinely concerned. Not just with Marvin Gaye, but his familiy as well. Zeola could not have done a better job telling her story of her family's disfunction, and I applaud her for doing so. Everyone has disfunction in their family and everyone deals with it in their own way. Some think it's not okay to talk abou it, but once you put it out there, who knows how it could help someone whose also struggling to deal with their own family's disfunction. A very emotional, touching, funny, talented and close-to-home play.

I understand the sister's perspective is not "all inclusive" of Marvin Gaye's life. He had wives and children that would have provided perhaps more of a complete sense of who he was also. Unfortunately, not one of the songs in the play is a Marvin Gaye hit. His very name evokes recognizable music. The play could be about anyone because there was no signature music to punctuate the periods of his life. Which was a shame. I assume it had to do with copyright and Motown probably owning the music. If that were the case, it should have strictly been a drama. Without songs Marvin Gaye made famous, the event was sorely lacking although the singers were good..

It was great once one read the program & realized the play wasn't about Marvin's music but his mental state, dysfunctional family & enablers of his ultimate demise. There was great fill-in music of his fellow stars of his time of fame. I think most of the crowd was disappointed because they bought tickets thinking they were going to hear Marvin's music. They wouldn 't havecome if they had known Zeola couldn't purchase his music catalog. I would also have thought twice about buying a ticket too. Still very good, both the acting, singing and band.

Sadly, the storyline focused on events that would have best been left behind closed doors. If the script was written to honor Marvin Gaye, it missed the mark by a mile! The fact that not a note of Marvin's music was included in the score added to the betrayal of the audience and the man we loved and admired. What was the point?

I thought the play was great but was sadden that Margin Gaye's hits were not played, although it was explained in the beginning it wasn't the same, so I was sort of disappointed by the choice of music...The cast was awesome.

The story of the life of Marvin Gay was as an eye opener. I enjoyed the music and superb perforformances of the actors. A great trip down memory lane.

The producers do not have rights to use Marvin Gaye's music; so this play about Gaye's life did not include any songs by him. Clifton Powell and Lynn Whitfield gave good performances unfotunaty the screen play was not well written. Some of the characters were cartoonist. The dialogue was simplistic. Poor casting for non lead characters who over acted and did not capture the essence of the star they were portraying. Gladys Knight has class but the actress who played Knight displayed no sophistication. The actor who played Teddy Pendergrass was silly, not sexy like Pendergrass.. Tina Turner was portrayed like a clown. Indeed, the entire concert scene with Knight, Pendergrass and Turner was painfully disappointing and told the audience nothing about Gaye's life. We bolted out of the theater when it was over.

I totally enjoyed this absorbing, dramatic and endearing play. Everyone, it seems, who loves Motown, soul and 60's music, loves Marvine Gaye, as do generations beyond. "Whats Going On" is a timeless classic. This play had me from the opening notes of his famous rendition of the Stae Spangled Banner, to the riveting, gripppping ending. It is a must see for Marvin Gaye fans. Zeola Gaye did a master field job penning her memoirs about her brother Marvin.

I bought the tickets for my mom's Mother's Day gift. She and I both really enjoyed the show. The singing was wonderful. The only thing missing was Marvin's music. It's unfortunate that the person who holds the rights to it would not share it. The message Zeola Gaye had to share about family disfunction and addiction was inspiring. It was fun to see the cast members in the foyer after the show.

My Brother Marvin highlights his "third eye" understanding of the force of spirtuality as it engaged him in an endless struggle for his soul.

I do wish I could give this play better ratings, but I can't; These are the facts, though there are somethings in the play that you might not know, the absence of "Marvins" music doesn't give this play the IMPACT that you might be looking for!

No classic Marvin Gaye songs were performed. She deceived her audience. Everyone was waiting to hear the songs we all loved, but nothing. There was nothing in the play that I didn't know already. When she came out and made her speech, that is when she said her request to include his music was denied. I wished I had known this before. No wonder the theater was almost empty. Keith Washington and the other performers were fine. Sorry Z, but your stuff was weak.

When you start a play off with a disclaimer that there will not be any songs performed by Marvin Gaye (what you came to hear), you know it is going to be a bad night. I spent over a hundred dollars for a pair of tickets to a horribly written play.

The performances were very good esp the one's done by the youngman who played Marvin as a youngman and even Keith Washington's performance as the older Marvin and also Clifton Powell as the dad but, I think we all expected to hear his song's done and were very unhappy that his sister couldn't get that done but, all in all the performances were very good including Ms Whitfield as mother Gaye. I still can't believe that they couldn't sing the songs because they were sung at the Black Ensemble when they did their play about Marvin.

My Brother Marvin which was supposed to chronicle the Life, Music and Death of one of the greatest male vocalists was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT on the most basic of levels -- IT DID NOT PRESENT ANY MARVIN GAYE MUSIC. Furthermore, the writer and producer, his sister Zeola Gaye, had the audacity to inform the audience that she was denied permssion by the company or person who holds the rights to Marvin's music. She actually thought her revealing this inormation would get sympathy from an audience after they had purchased tickets. So she apologized to us about this shortcoming and she acturally had the nerve to tell us in the same breath that she knew the rights were denied when they initially started the production !!!!!!! WHAT NERVE.!!!!!

When I read the reviews prior to attending the event, I thought I had made a mistake purchasing tickets for my date night. However, once I attended and view this play through a different lens, I am so happy that we attended. This play really brings attention to addictions of many sorts....and if you know anyone that you love, you would want to get them some help. Awesome job!

I had a wonderful time. The play displayed the "life" of Marvin Gaye and his family and friends around him. The behind the scenes life story was raw and troubling to know how this family had so many realistic but unspoken generational curses. is a must SEE!!!

I enjoyed everyone especially the young Marvin he was excellent. Hopefully it comes to DVD because I would love to purchase it.

They should not advertise the show as if we are going to get the full effect of Marvin. They weren't allowed to play any of his songs due to contract issues. So imagine watching Marvin Gaye show with absolutely no Marvin Gayes songs. The audience was disgusted, the group I sat with walkes out in disappointment aftee the show.

This was a terrible play! This was a play about Marvin & there were ABSOLUTELY no MG songs! I WANT MY MONEY BACK. At the end, Zeola comes out & tells us that they couldn't get rights to his music! Isn't that something major and should be known up front, BEFORE YOU PURCHASE TICKETS?! Then, the seats I purch'd, were removed from the row. They were GONE. I chose those seats for the location and the leg room. We were told that they, the theatre has no control over how the company wants to set up the production.

How can you have a story about Marvin Gaye and not hear his music ? If the public would have been told that they could not play any of his music due to ongoing litigation; most, including myself would have just read the book about his story. The public was "MISLED".

I was disappointed that they did not sing any of Marvin Gaye's songs. Zeola attempted to explain at the end of the show but left more questions than answers. I have seen the Marvin Gaye story at ETA Theater several years ago and this was an excellent production. I also saw Jackie Taylor, Black Ensemble Theater production last year which was also outstanding. Why were they allowed to use his songs and not his blood sister??? "This biopic of Marvin Gaye had nothing new to tell the audience." It was already known that his father was a cross-dresser...

The play was well acted. The biggest disappointment was none of Marvin Gaye's music was able to be sung. If the music could have been sung, this would have definitely been a 4 star play.

I really like the story line and really understood the relationship between Marvin and his dad. I was really looking forward to some good Marvin Gaye music. The music that they sang was good but I am a sing a long person and was disappointed that I could not do that. I selected really good seats on the main floor, Section - MNFL 3, Row - V, Start Seat 315, End Seat 316 and they were directly behind the sound guy. All my husband and I could see we the sound guy computer screens which were really bright and the back of his head. After complaining, along with a couple sitting next to us. We were moved 3 times. Totally disappointed all around. It was so bad we just asked to be moved up to the balcony. Finally we could actually see the play. So we missed a lot of the play moving around. Will definitely be careful next time selecting tickets and will also make sure I read reviews before attending.
