Talib Kweli

TALIB KWELI IN CONCERT:When it comes to socially conscious hip hop, Talib Kweli is in a class all by himself. Combining a distinctly stylish delivery, a gift for intricate rhymes, and a passionate political message, his expertly produced tracks are just as likely to inspire debate as they are dancing. Whether he's collaborating with DJ Hi-Tek or rolling solo, Kweli always delivers a top-notch performance -- which is precisely why fans are so fired up about his 2014 Black Star reunion dates with longtime collaborator Mos Def.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Brooklyn-born rapper Talib Kweli Greene initially broke into the rap game through the Beat Junkies' Lyricist Lounge mixtape project.

I am 50+ and I treated my niece who is half my age and we literally danced all night! The music was incredible and both DJs were approachable and fed the crowd all night so intuitively. Definitely worth every dime!

Talib kweli was a lyrical beast! The place had ample space and bartenders were friendly, and made Good drinks! Fat Tony & k Valentine were good. Great time and I plan to see Raekwon on the 30th!

Talib Kweli & Hi Tek's (Reflection Eternal) show was fire!! Dude did all of his bangers, both old and new. My favorite rap artist without question. Talib is at the top of his game. U-N-I was dope, SAS and Laws did their thing too. Check out the show most definitely if you are a fan of real hip hop.

Talib Kweli is one of my favorite rappers of all time, and he proved why on Tuesday when he was absolutely terrific in Iowa City. He blended classics and new hits to make a great show through and through. Girl Talk was a party, not a concert. He's not really all that necessary for his live show. Don't get me wrong, his music is great. It's just that I don't really find it necessary to have someone stand on the stage and pump up the crowd to that music. People loved his music, but the show itself was basically a party at a club with the actual DJ there in person.

This was my first hip-hop show and i loved every minute of it, the opening artists were extremely talented. There was a painter and break dancers for the first artist. When Talib took the stage everything hit the floor and the place was jumpin.

Excellent performance by this man and Hi-Tek. I was surprised also by the opening acts. Grand Rapids needs to show more support to the local talent because they were amazing!! BIG shout out to La Famiglia always holdin it down. Talib wasted no time gettin the crowd hype and he kept that energy throughout the whole time Definitely recommend buying the new album, and definitely recommend seeing this man in concert whenever you get the chance

I thought all the performers were excellent. Much better than I actually was expecting. I was just dissapointed that it started so much later than scheduled. Made for a longer night than it should have been. Which made alot of people leave early, so therefore the crowd was not what it should have been. I might be bias...but I think it should have been scheduled in St. Louis at the Pageant (or somewhere similar). I know the crowd would have been much larger and more hype than Columbia!!

What a concert! The show kicked off with Supernatural, a well proclaimed freestyle artist, interacting with the audience and spitting great lines. Following him was Slum Village, reminiscent of early 90's hip-hop, they put together a great duo that really got the crowd excited. The 1st of 2 main events hit the stage, with Slaughterhouse coming out with a boatload of energy and excitement, they played some old and new favorites. Then, to everyones approval, Talib and Hi-Tek, hit the stage. Both were excited to be there and put on a great show. This concert is not just about Talib, but all of the great acts that come before him.

I got my husband VIP tickets to see Talib Kweli as a Father's Day gift. There was suppose to be an artist meet and greet prior to the start of the show. Fans arrived early and were lined up for the meet and greet only to be told that it was rescheduled for after the show. The show commenced at around 8:30 pm. Talib didn't show up until 12:30 am. It was so hot inside the venue that it was almost intolerable, but the fans hung in there for 4 hours to watch Talib perform for 1 hour. VIP ticket holders then lined up again for the artist meet and greet only to be told that Talib had left the venue because he was sick and would not be doing the meet and greet. Refunds were issued and fans were sent on their merry way. This was a huge disappointment and I will never spend money on another Talib cd or performance etc... Talib you conducted yourself unprofessionally and you lost a fan base here in Arizona. You should have personally let your fans that you were sick and you should have apologized for being so late and not being able to do the meet and greet. Maybe if you conducted yourself in a more professional manner then you would be able to book larger venues than Club Red.

When your event says 8p and the headliner appears at midnight you're already off to a bad start. There was no need for the 4-5 opening acts, especially when they were not even somewhat well known acts. Once Talib came on he was great but I was also exhausted and a bit frustrated.

The show was great! It was a perfect venue to have a more intimate show. It's just always disappointing to see what little support TRUE hip hop performers get in Indianapolis. On one hand, no complaints because I literally stood less than 10 feet from him during the entire show. I just worry that after awhile artists like Talib Kweli will choose not to come to Indy.

What can possibly be said about Talib Kweli that could truly explain his excellence? Nothing really, for that you have to listen to his music. Talib Kweli was the reason I started listening to hip-hop, and he's the biggest reason that I still do. I got to meet him before the show at a meet and greet in a record store. He signed a poster for me, took a picture with me, and we talked for a bit. How many internationally renowned artists do you know who would take the time to pay respect to their fans like that? Then the show at the Vogue was incredible. It's a great venue - not too big or too small, and with good acoustics. The speakers were loud, but not to the point of painful. He had a live band with him (drummer, bassist, and keyboardist/DJ) and it really made his songs sound different but in a good way. It was a fresh take. He performed a lot of crowd-pleasers and was high energy the whole time. No hypemen, no backing tracks, just an amazing artist with a microphone and a beautiful mind. Then he brought out surprise guest Hi-Tek (his producer/MC partner in Reflection Eternal) and the crowd went nuts. My only complaint would be that the opening act, Fred the Godson, was pretty bad, and there was about 45+ minutes between him and Kweli coming on where the house music was godawful (I'm talking Lil Jon and the like).

I've followed Talib throughout most of his career and have seen him play at numerous events in that tenure. This show, however, was absolutely deplorable. The tickets and event page listed doors opening at 7pm and show starting at 8pm. Doors did not open until 8:15pm and an opening act (if that's what you'd call them), which were not listed, took the stage at about ten past nine. If their sole purpose was to get the crowd going and prime them for Talib's grand entrance, they may have served their purpose, but to banter on for 45 minutes was mind-numbing at best. In common hip hop show format, they sounded awful through the house acoustics and brought their entourage on stage which did little more than attempt to drag unwilling female patrons onto the stage. To this end, they were not successful. At about 10:15pm Talib finally made his grand entrance and although by this time I was ready to walk out, I figured that I had waited three hours to see him, the least I could do was hear him out. What ensued was what I assume to be some of his newer material and while I was not all that impressed, I figured he'd get around to his classics, which he did and pulled off perfectly. I guess what troubles me most about this show is that the Talib that I "knew" was someone who was all about class (and class consciousness for that matter), and what he showed me was that in the twilight of an illustrious career he has succumbed to the vanity of his own celebrity. This whole "I'll go on when I'm good and ready to" does not sit well with me and is an indication to me that he really doesn't care about his fans so much as he does about the casual whims of stardom.

This show was everything I wanted. The only two problems was a pretty weak opening act, just airhorn rap. The show was also supposed to start at 8pm but didn't kick off until 9:30. But other than that Talib played all the best. He spit fire and so did Jean Grae, oh my lord. Everyone he had on the stage (Jean, Reece(sp?) and the live band) were absolutely filthy. Overall a lot of fun, positive crowd. Always love the Paradise Rock Club too.

After a terrible opening act, Talib came out with energy. I was really impressed with the variety in his show, playing for over two hours and incorporating song from all albums. Loved seeing Res and the first girl (can't remember her name) contributing to the show. They were a highlight. Res' Fleetwood Mac cover and the Beatles "all the lonely people" added a familiarity. It's nice to see Talib still so passionate about performing.

Supposed 8pm show start. NOBODY even went on the stage until 9:15, even to do a sound check. When someone finally did go on it was the abysamally, ridiculously, silly bad Fred the Godson (had to google it later to find out who it was). That shouting nonsense went on for an hour. Then a DJ went on and spun records I could have stayed home to listen to for 30+ minutes. I think Talib was coming on as we all were walking out the door-- at 10:45. Absolutely ridiculous, worst night I've had in recent memory.

I always, always, always go to Talib Kweli shows in Milwaukee because he is one of the few if not ONLY real hip hop artists that shows consistent love to this city. The show as usual was great, he did some new stuff from Gutter Rainbows. He really gives his all when he performs. (sidebar ladies) And he looks like he's hitting that gym up pretty good. :-) If I have ANY complaints it wouldn't be about him, it would be about the crowd, maybe 7-8 people in the crowd knew the hook to Slum Village's "The Look of Love". OMG. Really Milwaukee? I guess all most folk around here really listen to is Gucci, Plies and Wayne! Ugh. Nevertheless, I hope he continues to bless our city with his talent and hopefully he can drag some other greats here with him. Jean Grae opening up would've been CRAZY. One Love.

By far the best kept secret in the rap game. With all this (c)rap that gets air play these days Telib Kweli keeps producing track after track of thought provoking lyrics over head bobbing music. Although I had just picked up his Gutter Rainbow CD on Friday before the show( is it sad that this type of artist is not better promoted in this city) I was still able to follow along with track How You Love me Gutter Rainbow and Friends & family . I am more a fan of Talib s solo projects and could take or leave the segment with Hi-Teck, but all in all the was the most bang for my Buck show I have been to in quite some time. The warm up groups Alpha Live and Oreo Jones provide the energy, yet the group after them but before Kweli kind took some wind of a my sails, yet as soon as Telib Kweli came on all was restored great show Telib Kweli is the truth !!!!!

Styles P from the Lox, Trench from naughty by nature, k Valentine and Talib Kweli all hit the stage. Talib, the headliner was maybe the most disappointing. He only did a handful of songs. Show started at 8:40 , but doors opened at 7pm. Drove an hour to see. Dj started show with mixing for 25 minutes, I could go to any night club for that. K Valentine was good. Styles P was great, He jumped into the crowd. He really was partying with us. Would go to his show, but Talib Kweli did not deliver the goods. First the good, Talib did an excellent job, really enjoyed his performance, Killer Mike was a good unexpected surprise. But that's where praise stop. Everyone else I was unfamiliar with but kept I an open mind. In my opinion Talib should tour with a group of higher caliber performers, the others are more grassroots artists, after FOUR AND A HALF HOURS of open acts my buddy couldn't take anymore and three hours in he left me and I was contemplating eating a bullet! But I was too far in, I've gone too far, I had to see the quest though. Not trying to bash the opening acts but there was very little contrast and variety of material and styles. It was like a 4 hour long Public Enemy song, I love PE but I dont want to hear Fight the Power for 4 straight hours. So 5 and a half hours on my feet (my dawgs were dead, so painful) I couldn't even see the encore and had to leave. Why in Gods name would they open doors at 7 and DJ started to play 830, first act at 9, main act at 11:50 during the middle of the week. But it was nice to see people bring their kids out to a hip hop show with weed in the air, alcohol induced, foul language atmosphere. So I've learned not to show up till 2 hours later.

Loved it, Howard theater is an excellent venue. I was up close to all the action and didn't have to strain myself squinting at the performance. All of the DJs were on point. Pharoahe and Kweli blew up the stage. Love, loved it!!!

What a great show! The weather was so bad and we had a long drive from Baltimore. I almost didn't show up but my wife insisted. She was the bigger Talib fan. I am so glad I did. Talib did tracks from almost every album from the Black Star days to the present. He engaged with the audience, sussed what we like and what we wanted to hear. He joked around with the crowd and his performance was on point. I had a great time and am now a Talib Kweli convert! Also, the venue was great. Howard Theater was renovated last year and the inside is nice and classy. Plus the sound system was great. I would come back and see this show in a heartbeat.

Venue was awesome great crowd but Talib stood us up. Never was a real fan just liked his hit "Get By" but think its lame he didn't show. Probably didn't miss him anyway. Definitely check out the venue if you he a chance though.

This bought back memories of being a teenager and jamming to REAL MUSIC. It was worth getting home late. Great show. Lots of energy.

I (along with two friends) drove up from Chicago to attend the tribute. We thought that it was an excellent concert. Dilla would have definitely been proud to see how many people appreciated his craft. It's bittersweet that we won't be blessed with any new material, but his legacy continues to live on. I plan on attending again next year.

Fashawn opened up the evening with a set that lasted about 30-40 minutes. I wasn't that familiar with his work aside from Samsonite Man, but he actually puts on a pretty good live show with minimal interference from his hype man (I can't stand hype men at hip-hop shows). After Fashawn was David Banner and 9th Wonder. David Banner brought a ton of energy and crowd participation to his show, but he talked way too much. Honestly 60% of his performance was him ranting about various topics. 9th Wonder appeared to be bored at times. Talib Kweli on the other hand was absolutely phenomenal. He performed for about 2 hours with a live band that included bass, keys, drums, and a dj. He ran through all his essential material and performed about 5 or 6 tracks off his Gutter Rainbows album. Kweli is an excellent performer with amazing breath control. He delivered every line of every verse with perfection. Honestly, could not recommend this guy enough! If you want to see why Talib Kweli is a legendary MC, I definitely suggest you check out his live show.

Overall: AWESOME SHOW!! One if the funnest shows ive been too! Loved the venue, very intimate. I would totally go to another show there! Only [minor] down fall was a fight broke out but that had nothing to do with the actual show, so the show was still GREAT!

Location was great, not too crowded and no people were rude. We had access to the VIP section which was great because we were able to sit down and relax prior to Talib performing.

This was my second time seeing Talib. He never fails to entertain and get my hips moving. I like how he mixes up his set - classic hits, to new jams to covers. His guests were also awesome (Reese - has an amazing voice!). Club Nokia is sweet venue to host him. I had a great time!

The overall concert was not a success. The opening act, Fah-shion was not original. All they did was rap over other people's beats. Lame in my opinion, I would never see them again. David Banner was horrible, I don't know how he got put on this tour with Talib Kweli. They are two MCs with very different styles. Banner from the South, and Kweli representing true hip hop culture. David Banner was offensive and provided no entertainment value to the concert. He ranted about non-sense that was not relevant to the show. The worst part of the show is when he made the comment, "I'm gonna let my nuts hang, like my ancestors did from trees". Worst line of the show, it makes no sense and is completely irrelevant to any message he had to convey. I would NEVER see him again. 9th Wonder didn't really do much but spin the beats for David Banner. I was hoping he would have done some emceeing, but I guess that was too much to ask for. Talib Kweli was good, but given the lackluster opening acts, by the time he came on stage I was ready to leave.

I came late only to see the main act Talib Kweli. He brought his A game - He had an awesome band and dj along which made it a complete event, and the sound quality at Nokia was great. The only weird thing was that he stopped the show half way through to invite some political cause on the stage with a banner and allowed a few people to speak. It completely killled the momentum of the show and I have no idea what prompted him to do that. There is nothing more annoying than going to see a show and having the artist get into politics. But I do love his music

Talib was amazing as usual. His energy and lyrics cannot be beat. He represented all his classics and hit hard with the new stuff. Also, I was impressed with David Banner. He really worked the crowd. I still feel the high from the show!

one of the best shows i have seen the band was amazing and the sound was clear and the bass was thumping.. stayed all the way til the end which i normally dont on most shows, but the music was too damn good. was a two hour set of almost non-stop lyrical mayhem that just flew by and was surprised cause it felt like an hour show, guess when ure having an amazing time, time passes you by, normally i dont really care to write reviews, but support hip hop, support Talib peace

Was curious of he would be able to party rock. Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of his show and group. Always been a fan. Was just unsure how his music would translate live. All in all it was a memorable night.

From beginning to end, Kweli kept you in the concert. He put it down. Only drawback was the sound system. Kweli's mic was fine, but the microphones/sound of the DJ and female vocalist were never right: either too low, too high (feedback), or just not on. GET IT TOGETHER, Showbox. When Kweli and others are constantly asking to turn up the mic...turn it up.
