Had the pleasure of seeing Other Lives last week at Brighton Music Hall. Though last year's show at the Paradise was probably a better venue due to bigger stage for all their instruments, BMH was a much more intimate affair with perhaps only 100 folks. Just starting out Fresh on this new tour to support third 3rd CD release, RITUALS, the band seemed a bit more light hearted and upbeat. Could be due to the Lead signer/songwriter, Jesse, just getting married, but even so, the 3rd CD expands upon the haunting "parie-rock" sound from their native state of Oklahoma to include a touch more electronics to their barque sound.

they stir a magical sense of passion, peace and desire. the timpani vibates in your chest and the trumpet is like a cloud carrying you away to a lovely, lonely place. Jesse, Josh and Jonathan are talented in a special sort of way. very kind with no pretense. we miss Jenny and the cello.

Sound was fantastic (2 violins, trumpet..), set was great and the lights they had, which changed according to the music, made the show very unique and definitely unforgettable. Go see them, you won't be disappointed!

I definitely enjoyed and would probably go again if they came back to town as the concert was very enjoyable. The sound was great and you could tell that the band-members were all REALLY into it and giving it their ALL! It was also amazing to see how many instruments these 5 people could play! Some of them would be playing multiple instruments at a time or switch instruments mid-song and it was just amazing to hear and see! I truly enjoyed it and the music was so relaxing and 10x better than on the CD! The only issue I had was that the set was really short. They played for about an hour overall, and it was really good, but it was only an hour. We came all the way here and paid for the show so give us a full show! I don't know why they cut the time so short. Even knowing that though, I'd still go again!

Every song was simply amazing. I saw them last spring when they opened for Radiohead, but seeing them in such an intimate setting was fantastic. After the show, they mingled with the audience and I was able to get pictures and autographs from the band. They are all so sweet and wonderfully talented.

This Other Lives show was an amazing concert by an extremely talented band (who also happen to be sweet and genuine human beings). Their sound was flawless and their presence and energy were off the charts. This show was easily one of the best concerts I have been to in years.

honestly, this show was perfection. The locale was intimate, the performance was incredible. The artists were so sweet and passionate. And afterwards, they had actually came downstairs to the bar area and talked to their fans!

After I attended the Other lives at the El Rey, I came away a fan. I had listened to the album Tamer animals a few times and liked it but that was about it. However live they gave the material a whole new life and energy when performing live. I have since recommended them to several of my friends who live in cities that are upcoming on the current tour. I will also definitely catch them the next time they are in So Cal.

Other Lives was absolutely fantastic. They took the music from their recordings and kicked them up a couple notches. Exactly what I want when I go to a concert. Not tons of new stuff that you can't sing along with, but not like I could have the same experience listening to a cd if I closed my eyes. More energy, the lead singer has great stage presence, and the backup vocals are glorious. On to the not so great: The lighting was cool and definitely unique, I loved the light bulbs, but the flood lights in the back were BLINDING. I had to look down every time they were on, which was sporadic and unpredictable, which was extremely annoying. I missed the first opener, but the second opener was atrocious. I haven't heard so many wrong notes at a concert in a while. Cute guy that tried really hard, but needs some backup musicians and practice. Lots of practice. Finally, the venue is definitely not my favorite. There isn't really a great spot to stand, unless you're very tall or somehow got to the front. For short people like me there is almost no way you can see unless you stand on your toes and crane your neck back and forth whenever people move. Not fun. They also charge you for water. That should be a crime. If you're paying for drinks, or even if you're a DD, you should get free tap water. Parking is a nightmare. There is almost no street parking unless you have a neighborhood permit (otherwise you're looking at a $70 parking ticket). You can park in the garage for 10 bucks, if you weren't so lucky with street parking. On the plus side, the sound is always pretty good at the El Rey.
