Wynton Marsalis is the leader of a Band of excellent individuals that blend into a great Jazz orchestra. It is the house of Swing on the road. :-)

It was an awesome concert. I am so glad that we didn't pass this up! I saw a lot of other major musicians in our town at this concert, as well. It was a real treat. The ensemble was a group of 15 players from his Lincoln Center ensemble, and they were amazing! The bottom line is, if you like jazz, you absolutely need to see WM live; and if you are new to jazz, you absolutely must see WM live! You will love it.

These musicians are individually incredibly talented, but when they play together it is EXCEPTIONAL! As a trumpeter and orchestra member I know how extremely difficult it is to do what they make look so easy. Each one of these musicians is a MASTER of their instrument(s), and they truly are the definition of synergy. The two one-hour sets went by so fast it seemed as if they had only begun when the concert was over. I can't recommend them highly enough for anyone who likes live music, especially jazz!

Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center crew always swing. Nice mix of classic Ellington, Basie and newer material, executed with feeling and unsurpassed technical facility.

Sold Out!!! You missed a phenomenal show that will go down in history as the night Wynton blew his face off. The best trumpet solo ever played on Tiger Rag. Number after number rose higher than the previous. The only drag was the Henry Mancini gift to all the folks who can't appreciate Duke and Basie. They lost their minds over the theme from the Pink Panther, truly a sad moment, but I guess they butter the bread. Another lackluster moment that I've now seen in two L.A. gigs, is the elevation of Ted Nash, a mediocre horn player on a good day. We heard his disjointed composition based on a Lyndon B. Johnson speech (seriously) which involved the destruction of any type of melody and featured the horns and reeds blowing full blast atonally for five minutes. Sit him down! Other than that, perfection

I normally don't go to many Gospel Concerts, however, the jazz component intrigue me enough to attend this event. What an amazing collaboration of two fine American traditions that was both moving and intellectually challenging to follow. The Chorale le Chateau members were all outstanding singers, while the musicians were some of the best to come Hampton Roads. What I most appreciated was Wynton Marsalis. He did not dominate nor did he appear to overshadow the other musicians, very classy of him. I have saved the best for last, Mr. Damien Sneed. He was brilliant, flawless and his time management was impeccable. VIRGINIA ARTS FESTIVAL, Kudos to this performance

This was a spectacular, grand presentation featuring the essence of American music heritage. Wynton Marsalis proved his genius again in composing a substantial piece of work that succeeds in combining elements of folk, jazz, classical, contemporary and eclesiastical in an engaging, coherent manner that electrified the performers as well as the admiring audience. The participants appeared as excited in their rendition as they must have been when they first heard the piece in its entirety. Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center deserve high marks -- again.

I have seen Wynton play many times. I liked the fact that he opened the performance with an extended solo himself. Each performer had a chance to be spotlighted, and the lights were very bright. Every one of them was a monster and could have an entire show built around their abilities. Absolutely awesome performance by incredible talents!

The Lincoln Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis played with great skill, wonderful expression, and nuance while playing a variety of styles with great arrangements. Their drummer, from the Great Cass Tech, reminded me of Max Roach. This was the kind of music that let my wife's restless leg syndrome fully express itself. The Sound Board is a great venue to hear the full dynamic of a group. Pianissimos can be heard, fortissimos don't make your ears ring and the music does not sound like mush. Great evening of music making and music listening

Wynton Marsalis has solidified his place with the Jazz Greats of both yesterday and the contemporary jazz artist today. He places himself as a member of a great ensemble and not the defining artist. The multi-talented group of musicians that are all capable of carrying a show on their own demonstrated amazing skills on multiple instruments and carried not only musical expertise but also soul to their renditions of standards and also original compositions. I play a little myself and to be able to see masters such as these inspired me and demonstrated just how ridiculous their plateau of talent is!

Each of the three sets from each group of performers would have been worth the price of admission, but taken together it was phenomenal. I wasn't familiar with Cécile McLorin Salvant, but she takes tunes you've heard in other contexts and makes them live with new life. Bela and Chick enjoyed and respected each other while we watched and listened to craftsmanship. Wynton and the orchestra finished the evening with style. So glad we were there to experience the evening.

I knew I was in for a treat before the the first note sounded but never did I expect it to take my breath away. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at the Attucks Theater was just a phenomenal show. So much talent on the stage at the Attucks. We were so lucky to have such an event in Hampton Roads which seems to have little available of music of this type. I wish the show could have gone on and on. I noticed the Orchestra was playing the Kennedy Center the next weekend. Thanks for everybody and the sponsors supporting the Attucks Theater and the wonderful events they provide us.

The ambience of the fully restored New Orleans Saenger Theater made the perfect accompaniment for Wynton and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. The compositions were in the tradition of the masters. As with all NOLA performances, Wynton's father joined in for a number. Although Ellis has a little trouble following the sheet music, he recovered nicely with the help of the LCJO pianist. The addition of Herlin Riley for the last song brought it over the top.

Wynton Marsallis was unavailable for the performance but the band was fantastic anyway. The singers, Ken Washington and Roberta Gamberini were fantastic. The bad part was that a microphone used to introduce the players and provide a history of the songs was defective and garbled the sound of those speaking. Without a membership to Lincoln Center, seeing this band is almost impossible so it was a treat nonetheless.

I've seen Jazz at Lincoln Center 10 times since 2001. This was a rare misstep for Wynton and the group. Here's why: 1) Chick Corea and Bela Fleck looked like they were going to JOIN the band, but actually played their own set. The band risers were set up, then removed. Those two played a "jam session" for an hour. Way too long for a 2-piece bluegrass set when people are expecting a full jazz ensemble. 2) JLCO finally came out at 9:40p and played an hour before hurriedly ending the set, no encore, lights up. Not sure whether Wynton arrived late since he doesn't fly and had to drive all the way from NYC, but the set was short and boring. We are SO tired of Ted Nash. At least he didn't bring his Dad out this time. One highlight was the show opener, Cecile McLorin Salvant. She killed it. Best jazz singer since Ella Fitzgerald in my book.

Wynton Marsalis delivered a Big Band Sound, but I falied to understand the duelling banjo music accompanied by Chick Corea as any form of Jazz, and I seems that Califonia has given up on true Jazz for Smooth Jazz, Rythm and Blues and Pop music marketed under the genre of Jazz to the delight of the younger generation that cannot appreciate Jazz. The Playboy Jazz Festival and Newport Beach Jazz Festivals having headliners such as Fantasia and Larry Graham are prime examples of this move, and this year's Hollywood Bowl Jazz Wednesdays were pitiful. Its a shame that I must board a flight to New York City to experience true Jazz music and musicians.

The opening act, Cecil, is a fun, talented singer. Quirky music, not mainstream, but enjoyable. Second act, Chick Corea on piano with a banjo player, weird! Loose! Very weak! Wynton Marsalis & band. . Very professional, very smooth, but hardly gave us five songs and called it quits! Both opening acts played en cores (even though no one asked for it). But after the VERY SHORT set by the main act, they lights came on and goodbye! Go home! Adiós! Not worth the effort to drive thru traffic, $20 bucks for parking and the long walk up. Not recommended!

I so enjoyed the line up of excellent artist - seems to me that Wynton Marsallis had a hand in selecting them all. The first artist whose name may be Celeste was a great surprise. She held the audience with hr voice and commanded complete silence when she sang with out the use of a microphone or instruments Chick Corea Misspelled I think brought a different type of flavor with his piano bluegrass. Finally, Wynton brung the Jazz and Blues with a tinge of Broadway. His performance was worth the wait.

God bless those who support this organization. It's not just the brilliant writing by many of the band members, or the serious depth of their musicianship, or that they play as a unit so wonderfully. One of the most remarkable things is their pure musical spirit, which emanates from Wynton Marsalis and joyously flows through the whole band. Nothing is done with ego. They all know how good they are, but they keep their individual and collective egos in check on stage, allowing the music to reach that truly spiritual beauty. All the many excellent soloists approach their work without ego based pride. Even Wynton leads mostly from within the Tpt section, subtly inside the band. Several players take turns conducting. They let the music live and speak powerfully for itself. It is truly a soul-stirring pleasure to experience this magnificent organization and their beautiful spirit is to be admired and emulated by all performing groups in any and every idiom. Music can only become uniquely spiritual when pride filled ego is kept out of the room and this band proves it.

For a horn player from way back, this was almost a religious experience. Every man on that stage is a master of his craft. The total time of the concert was about 2 hours, including intermission and an encore. I really didn't want it end.

was the best JAZZ Performance I have ever experienced. Every artist in the Lincoln Center orchestra demonstrated their talent. Marsalis is a Jazz researcher, teacher, historian and he is the best horn player of all. Thank you Wynton you did not disappoint us, moreover you took us to a place of true appreciation for JAZZas a work of Art.

They say be careful of meeting your hero, for you may be disappointed. I waited 30 years to finally see Marsalis in concert, and I was not disappointed for even one second of the two and half hour performance. Marsalis and his Lincoln Jazz ensemble have no contemporaries. Each member of the 15-piece band, plus two other cameo performers, exhibited exceptional talent in their own right throughout the evening. They played the most complicated, rare jazz pieces from Thelonious Monk to Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and everything else in-between. And they played with great mastery of their instruments, reproducing the most amazing combination of acoustics. Marsalis was the story-telling Maestro, tracing the history of every piece, spicing it with anecdotes throughout the evening. That made you appreciate the compositions even more. It was impossible not to appreciate the musical geniuses on display and be completely enthralled, even if you are not a big fan of Classical Jazz. This was good music at its best, regardless of your preferred genre. I grew up on classic & progressive rock, R&B, etc, but I left the venue convinced that Classical Jazz is the da Vinci of all music, if not all of art. Attend this event and you will be glad you did.

Our foursome is completely satisfied with our Jazz at Lincoln Center evening. Marsalis was wonderful with his humble commentary from a seated position at the back. All members were excellent musicians. We would go again.

Once again Wynton Marsalis and his incredibly talented Lincoln Center Orchestra put on a terrific concert. We have been enjoying listening to Wynton Marsalis for over 20 years and he did not disappoint. He is such an talented musician, but more importantly, he is a humble one that is dedicated to preserving Jazz and the influence of African-American music. What amazed us was the talent of the rest of the orchestra, with each one getting to be showcased in a song with a solo. Awesome talent on one stage!
