This was my second time seeing JJ in the last 6 months. The first time was with his band Mofro while this one was a solo acoustic evening. Both concerts were great with this one actually being more fun in a much smaller venue that was just the right size to sit back and enjoy the acoustic set. He played several of the same songs during the evening but was able to take the time to tell some background stories to go with them. I will not hesitate to see him again when scheduling permits!

Venue was small. First come first served as far as seating was concerned. Hearing JJ Grey singing acoustically was worth the long trip, he was talking with the audience, cracking jokes, and a true showman. If you ever get the chance take in one of his shows, you won't regret it...

And I love JJ with a band backing him up. I arrived early and got front row. Shannon McNally came on and had some pretty good songs. She can carry a tune extremely well and can hit tones that cut to your heart. Drunk guy got kicked out for being a garden variety d-bag, which was nice. JJ said his goal with the solo tour was to have a feel of a bbq. I don't think he could have gotten closer to that feeling than he did this night. I went to the following night show in Louisville at Headliners and having the balcony open with a bunch of very loud very drunk people kinda killed the vibe. My favorite parts are the stories JJ tells about the songs that he sings. I will never forget his story about Slow, Hot & Sweaty and that minivan ride to the outlet mall.

JJ Grey never disapoints, his performance was downright spectacular. Starts off with "Hide and Seek" and ended with the crowd calling him back on stage with high applause.

JJ Grey is the best white soul singer in America. He has a charisma that was aparent from the first note. By the end of the show you almost feel like you just finished sharing a few beers with an old friend. Great show, great entertainer. By all rights, he should be a "rock star". I'm so glad I had had a chance to see him in an intamate venue like the Bluebird before the whole rock star thing kicks in.

The show was amazing!!!!! It had a VH1 "Storytellers" feel to it... The setting was very personal and JJ told a story behind every song before he performed. It was awesome to see what went into the creation of his songs. I cannot wait until the next time he is near Indianapolis, I will def be seeing him again!

As a Hot Buttered Rum fan, I came to see the traveling trio. As usual, they were stellar. Their new songs will only add to their existing hits. Not being a blues fan, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed JJ Grey. The two bands complemented one another and lended themselves to a great evening. Thanks to the Showbox for running a organized event. I'd return in a minute!

This was my second time seeing JJ Grey & MOFRO, the first time being 5 yrs ago when he opened for the Derek Trucks Band. JJ and his act have grown considerably. The first time it was a 4 piece band and JJ was constantly playing an instrument. This time it was a 7 piece band, including a trumpet player, sax player and keyboardist. JJ did not play any keys, and played guitar on only about 1/2 of the songs. The rest of the time he just sang vocals, and it seemed to free him up more to interact with the audience and the other band members. One big improvement to the sound was adding Todd Smallie (a founding member of the Derek Trucks Band) on bass. Combined with the new drummer (I didn't catch his name), MOFRO's rhythm section is better than ever. And the horn players added a huge dimension, both in terms of music and showmanship. A great horn duo! JJ's connection with the audience - his naturally 'out-there' soulfulness - was a big hit with the Seattle crowd.

After experiencing JJ Grey and Mofro in Portland this past summer, I was pleased to see them closer to home. JJ Grey and band really hit the spot...Two standing ovations and at a small venue like the Showbox market, up front and personal...Lots of songs and lots of Rockin music...Ill be in San Francisco when he plays at the Fillmore theater and Ill watch him there as well...
