Ray LaMontagne

Ray LaMontagne

Ray Lamontagne is no stranger to the world Folk music. His fourth album, "God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise," released in 2010, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album, and he subsequently embarked on the 2011 Pariah Dogs Summer Tour, so named after his new band The Pariah Dogs. With a soulful upper register and a breathless falsetto that adds hints of R&B to otherwise straightforward folk arrangements, LaMontagne's voice is always at the center of his performances. The typically reticent singer keeps banter to a minimum at his concerts, pouring his concentration into the songs, at times even singing with his eyes closed.

Excellent show, IMO. He was much rockier than I expected but also has a vocal range so strong that he carried that off as well as his quieter songs. I was not very familiar with him before this; the concert was a gift to my wife. I am a fan now.

Unbelievable night of music. Ray LaMontagne was at his best. He displayed a viobrant rock edge to his performance, but also mesmerized the audience with the bluesy tunes from his new relearse - A great night of music in a beautiful venue.

We were in the 3rd row to the side of the stage. It was a little hard to make out what he was singing at times. I think a few rows back, the acoustics may have been better. All in all it was a good show!

It seems as though some of the fans of Ray Lamontagne have divided his career into the early, soulful singer songwriter phase, and the later psychedelic tinged phase that began with Supernova, and has continued through Ouroboros and the newest work, Part Of The Light. While I enjoy Ray s earlier works, I didn t truly become a fan until the latter phase. So for me, Ray s concert at Ascend Amphitheater was a dream come true. The set list consisted mostly of works from his last three records. Kicking off with Julia and following with Lavender , the mood was set early. Alternating most of Supernova with songs from Part Of The Light and sprinkling in some of Ouroboros the concert had a beautiful flow. And while some people may have been disappointed by the omission of songs like Trouble or Jolene , I was not. Too many shows these days are greatest hits heavy. I appreciate an artist who is still growing, evolving, and whose work is growing and evolving with him. Ray Lamontagne is that artist. Don t miss a chance to see a brilliant show by a brilliant artist.

It was a perfect night for his show. The music was great, loved that he didn't play just the radio hit list. Neko Case was a great opener for him and I'd love to see them both again.

I ve seen Ray 3 times in my life. The first time was when he just hit the scene with his first acoustic album. It was amazing. He was amazing, his voice was amazing. I saw for supernova and walked out. This recent show was about the same. He looked like he was having more fun, but his voice is not made for a full electric rock band. We left early. Bring Ray s voice forward. He does not need a full electric band. Neko Case was awesome!

Ray LaMontagne was entertaining but Neko Case was brilliant. I d far rather see her get a full 2 hour set rather than be limited to < 60 minutes. Greek Theatre is the best venue in the Bay Area.

It wasn t a bad show, but it was lacking some passion. No encores, either for Neko Case or Ray. Ray didn t play a single song from his older albums. His new stuff is sleepy & depressed. Meh. Would not spend the $200 I spent to see him again, sadly... Will pick other shows to see at this amazing venue in the future.

First time at the Greek which was gorgeous, but man are you RIGHT next to your neighbor. There was not enough room for much of our row to actually be in our seats so we shifted down to get comfortable as did the rest of the row. Much of the seating is on concrete too, so don t forget to bring something to sit on! Ray LaMontagne was disappointing and played almost exclusively his new album. When the crowd pleaded with him to play many of the songs we have loved from him, his response to one request was Jolene? Aren t you sick of hearing that song? I know I am. That seemed to set the tone for the night and fans were left angry and ripped off. I guess he calls the shots and wasn t feeling like obliging any requests. Oh well. At least the weather was nice that night.

Ray has gotten lots of criticism the last 2 albums which have been more of concept albums. Well, he said this newest record had to be performed live and straight through in order to fully get it, and he was right. I really enjoyed this show when I had not really enjoyed the record. Being supported by My Morning Jacket was an major bonus. Ray appeased the folks that only want to hear the songs that made him famous by playing Trouble & Jolene early on, and he wailed & growled in those songs like only he can. Then about midway through the Ouroboros set, the crowd thinned out, making far better viewing for anyone in General Admission. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has been a long-time Ray fan or just enjoys a solid concert experience. If you're super committed to old Ray, and cannot be happy without serious time dedicated to his early music, this might not be your show. The Southside Ballroom is not the best venue in Dallas (too many TVs advertising upcoming shows; too many poles & beams obscuring the stage; and it's just not an intimate space). Nevertheless, this show was more intimate than was Ray's show at Fair Park Music Hall on the Supernova tour.

Show was supposed to start at 8, but it was more like 9. He opened with 3-4 of his older songs but everything from there on was off his new album. I know when an artist tours for their new album, it is the primary focus, but they usually sprinkle a few older gems in here and there. Not the case here. The crowds started thinning out halfway thru his show sadly. We are long fans of Ray so we felt lucky to see him live and we enjoyed it, even tho we didn't know anything off his new album. He still sang fabulously. The venue in which he played would not have been my choice. He needs a small intimate venue with seating. South Side Ballroom was 95% standing room only. His music isn't dance music, it's chill music, but hard to do that when you're standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other folks, and dodging people who are trying to get to the bar for a drink. So personally, I'm glad the crowds started to thin out. Our gain! There was also a lot of talking amongst the crowd. Made it hard to hear him talking and some of his acoustic stuff. The crowd was a vast mixture of ages.

I've never been to the Greek Theatre before. What an amazing experience! The venue is beautiful and Ray LaMontagne, backed by My Morning Jacket, were AMAZING! I went with my wife and another couple and we all had a fabulous time! At one point we even saw the actual moon hanging over the stage which was decorated with a large project moon. The acoustics were excellent as well as the overall performance with stage lighting etc. The only negative that I would have would be that the concrete benches, at least for me, really did become uncomfortable about 3/4 of the way through the show so definitely bring some padding if your backside is sensitive in the least.

I've seen Ray play four times now. While everyone of those shows was unique and excellent, this show was the very best so far. Why..? I was not even a big fan of this recent album, The quality of the band, the soundscape of music, artistry, created the show entertaining beyond anything I've ever seen him do. The lighting, and video overlays on the monitors was exceptionally well done. I went into the show expecting to be a little disappointed hearing that he's not playing much of his old stuff, and was blown away by the depth of the entire bands talent. And U will be as well!

First 4 songs awesome campfire cowboy Ray L. Then MMJ came on stage and it was a big rock show. Almost more about them than Ray. I loved it, the music was so much like Pink Floyd quite often then Ray's voice burst through. Band was tight. Not poppy or "fun". Deep and trippy.

I am more a fan of Ray's prior work. I don't care for the new album so much and found this show to just drone on. Many of the songs sounded the same and you could rarely hear Ray's vocals because the sound mixing was terrible. I am actually a huge fan of his previous albums and was very disappointed with this show.

Just finished up enjoying an amazing show An Evening with Ray LaMontagne. All I can say is that dude can rock out! I was not expecting that at all. It had a taste of Pink Floyd, Blues, Rock n' Roll, Modest Mouse, Pearl Jam and one song even reminded me of some Smashing Pumpkins' - Perfect all rolled into one! To top it off, they even had the old school psychedelic, acid wash on a overhead projector stage background for a light show. If you enjoy any or all those listed, I highly recommend attending his show.

Though I'm not a huge Ray LaMontagne fan, my girlfriend is, and we looked forward to this show, even though it cost more than double what we originally paid when it was changed from Champions Square to the Saenger (though the air conditioning was a nice). Unfortunately, though, Mr LaMontagne was sick, with throat issues, so I thought the vocals was iffy, and less than stellar. I applaud him for coming out and fighting through it, and the visual show was nice, but being as he couldn't perform the only 2 songs I knew from him because of the illness, I, personally, was less-than-impressed.

After an unfortunate and lengthy delay of over an hour due to a horrendous storm, we were so fortunate that the concert didn't end up being cancelled altogether. Ray & The "Jacket Boys" (MMJ band w/o Jim James) as Ray affectionately called them took the stage anyway and proceeded to blow us away!! The band played wonderfully and Ray's voice and guitar playing was enthralling to say the least. He/they had an awesome stage prop behind them that was reminiscent of the old Pink Floyd round screen and throughout every song the beautiful orb changed between the Moon and/or Mars during the Ouroboro songs and then switched to old school 60s' psychedelic style lava lamp or oil & water display with beautiful colors that matched perfectly with the Supernova songs. If the damn storm hadn't taken away so much time and Portsmouth didn't have the restrictive concert curfew, there was supposed be a lot more music played as well. This is a MUST GO show if you really love good music and most all great musicians and artists. I can't say it enough, GO and EXPERIENCE this show! I actively trying to find another stop on their tour I can attend again to get the full and complete experience. We hope and pray that Ray LaMontagne and/or MMJ/Jacket Boys will return to Portsmouth Pavilion again (far better than the VA Beach shed...) and not be dismayed by the poor attendance thanks to that storm.

Ray opened with a super mellow solo acoustic set and give a painfully long talk (barely audible actually). When the solo stuff was finished he brought out the band and they went right into Homecoming from the new album. Awesome electric set. They played first half of Ouroburo then moved into material from Super Nova and eventually spread into his early stuff from Trouble and Sun Turns Black. I was elated with the sound and stage setup.

I think Ray sounded great, but there were so many problems with this experience that it's difficult to say for sure. The show started 1-1/2 hours late. I was sitting in the blanket area with friends - beautiful night - and as soon as Ray came on we were stampeded by tons of people. People walked on our things, crowded in front of us and then continued to talk all night - catching up on old times over their drinks and marijauna. People were completely trashed - Ray was merely the background music to a party. We had to stand the entire time because you couldn't see otherwise. Near the end there was a guy dancing in front of us and he backed up and tripped over a girl who had fallen on the ground. SHe was wearing black and you couldn't see her. She was totally wasted and nearly passed out. Ray is a great musician with deep and soulful lyrics, but this audience didn't seem to care about this music at all. I'd suggest a different venue for Ray next time. It was really disappointing to not be able to enjoy the experience of his music.

So this was my first Ray concert, and I was pleased at about 8:30 when Ray came out solo as played an acoustic set that was amazing for about an hour. The vocals were on point and everyone was really feeling the music. Then after a short break, Ray came out with the full band. And, that was different. Snuck in some bluesy riffs, and good vocals, but ultimately drowned out by keyboards and some odd moaning. After about 5 songs that could have each been the same song for all I know, we left with a large group of other people. First half, awesome. Second half, what the....

I really respect and feel Ray's music and have been listening to it since I was introduced to his work by my cousin around 2 years back. His voice is so deep and so charismatic that it is impossible to ignore. No wonder, I was extremely lucky that he was in Syracuse for a concert! I went in a bit skeptical because of the previous reviews of people not liking his recent shift from earthy, soul-stirring songs to what they, unfortunately, refer to as "psychedelic rock". Supernova is an amazing album. It took me a while to start liking the album but after I heard him play that album live, my opinion has changed forever. His songs - "drive in movies", "ojai", "supernova", "no other way" and "airwaves" are my personal favorites from the new album. He mixed and matched, going back and forth from electric to acoustic guitar to play his old songs that made him this famous. Yes, it was a supernova tour and yes, he played the full new album. But never underestimate Ray and his love and skills towards music. He delivered, yet again - in style.

I gave this event 4 stars because Ray, as usual, sang his songs flawlessly, but I have to say this show was strange to say the least. The SB Bowl was a lovely venue - easy to get in and out of and the concessions were moderately priced. I took notice because I am from LA and I usually have to take out a personal loan from my bank in order to buy anything at Staples or the Hollywood Bowl. However, I found the patrons restless and even down right rude at the show. People kept getting up from their seats and walking around the entire length of the show. People seemed more interested in getting beer than actually listening to music. Perhaps, this is because Ray played, what seemed like, his entire, new album at the beginning of the show and then only played 3 or 4 of his classic hits, MINUS Shelter! The crowd begged for a second encore and the house lights were abruptly turned on and we were forced to leave feeling a little underwhelmed and disappointed. His voice and the band sounded great, but I know I wanted to hear some of the songs that made me a Ray LaMontagne fan to begin with. No such luck.

My friends and I would have liked to have heard more of Ray's old songs, peppered with the new ones he is promoting. The show lacked energy and Ray's voice seemed like he came out of the gate crawling. More of his old stuff might have bought him a few more years of fan-dome but I think he blew it for the San Luis Obispo crowd on Friday night. Sorry to be so frank. We love your older music, Ray. The new stuff lacked the heart we associate with your craft. We came for the love and left disappointed.

I knew he was promoting his new album, but I didn't think we were going to hear almost every song from the Super Nova album. I heard several people ask for him to play " Let it be me" and he apologized and said there just wasn't enough time and proceeded to close the show with yet ANOTHER new song...The tickets sold based off of his old music, not b/c we wanted to hear a bunch new stuff that sounds NOTHING like what we fell in love with in the first place...I attended over 30 concerts this year so far and this is the only one I was disappointed with. It was a waste of $80 and the gas to drive to a different city...he didn't get personal like he does on the intimate shows you see on television.--- just disheartening .

MusicalMoments
Ray LaMontagne 12/1/12 Listening When I quiet the voices of the shoulds in my life, I become as open as a highway at midnight to the possibilities of my day. I was still swimming in the joy of seeing one of my favorite musical artists. I could feel the pull of the energy of the night before. Something in my heart kept calling, he is STILL in town. As I acknowledged that thought, I quieted it with seriously Eileen, you met him, what more could you want ? MORE was the answer that returned. I looked at the StubHub site. The prices I saw for the second sold out show at the Chicago Theatre were very attractive. I dared to peak at the pit section and found one lonely ticket for the front row. What are the chances? Now what do I do? When met with a decision like this, I think if that opportunity vanishes in ten minutes how will you feel? My answer waits like a dear friend. I was going! I scrambled to pick up my ticket that I thought was awaiting me at the box office, but wasn t. Angels were everywhere in that situation. StubHub calling me to pick up the ticket, a sweet cabbie named Nicole who took me to the location a couple miles away, waited and brought me back a quicker route to make it to the concert with fifteen minutes to spare. As I took my seat, I turned to the gentleman on my left to introduce myself. It turns out I spoke with him the night before as we were exiting the theatre. He offered me information about a version of a song Ray had played on Friday night. Now he was sitting next to me on Saturday in the front row! How serendipitous that we would end up beside each other, when the venue holds 3600 people. I sat looking up at the stage, seeing the richness of the grain in the door panels I spotted the night before. Now I could see they had no doorknobs. From here I could see the x where Ray would be in front of the mike and how weathered the bass was as it stood proudly in its stand. I wondered how old it could be. I saw Ray s cowboy hat hanging on the coat tree. Over and over I thought of how few times I have had front row tickets. Each time there seemed to be a miraculous happenstance that landed me there. Again and again my heart sang the words thank you. A wise woman, Deb Cooperman says when practicing gratitude to say thank you/more please . I may not have said those words out loud yesterday, but my heart must have somehow heard that message. As Ray walked on stage every fiber of my being was filled with a sense of wonder. I looked at his clothes and questioned where did he find those jeans straight from the 70 s? The extra panel made of a different material sewn below his calf creating a bigger bell bottom which cascaded over his clean brown shoes. The jeans had a gentle fray at the back, the kind that says these are my favorite. His layered woven and jean shirts made me think it was going to be a very warm for him under the stage lights. The hair on his head looked as abundant as that on his face. Fans old and new greeted him with a welcoming applause, for which he shyly replied, thank you . He rolled into a nearly identical set list as the night before. I know that because my friend my left Alejandro, has a better memory than I do. He smiled at my excitement as each song began and I knew instantly the title as if I was playing Name That Tune in my head. He quietly sang the lyrics as I did to our favorite tunes. Between songs the stage fades to darkness as Ray and his bassist Zachariah chat about which song is to be played next or to count out a beat. Being twelve feet away I could see the sweat beginning to gently pepper Rays face. At times I wasn t quite sure if he was tearing up during a tune or a well-placed drop of heat just happened to roll down his cheek creating that illusion. It wasn t a Whitney Houston type of downpour but a result of our warm December temperatures. He had a towel back where he kept his water on a little table. Not sure anyone besides the front rows would have even noticed. He spoke even less than he did at Friday night s concert. With fewer words on stage we were afforded one more song, All the Wild Horses was the noticeable addition to the play list. Unlike other performers, he never asks for the house lights to be turned on to see the crowd. He doesn t try to woo his fans. He stands there and works his magic which seems to be enough for everyone. From my seats in the second balcony on Friday, Rays shadow cast down on the stage creating an illusion that appeared to double the amount performers alongside him. From that vantage point I admired the Bassist and how he played that instrument like he was dancing with a friend. Rays musical guest, singer songwriter Lisa Hannigan captivated me with her intense talent, I accepted her I like she was a long lost cousin from Ireland. Saturday night in the front row looking up at Ray from this seat, I saw this beautiful soul I could hardly keep my eyes off of all night. As the concert closed, I hoped my camera would deliver me a picture or two to capture this moment that my heart would forever hold. I honor who I am to my core when I chase these moments as if the chance may never come again.

I am a huge Ray Lamontagne fan, but had never had the chance to see him live. We were in the 7th row, and the show was amazing. Ray had recently gotten over strep throat, so he wasn't feeling well, but that didn't hurt his output at all. He had guest Lisa Hannigan with him, and her music and her singing with Ray was just brilliant.

CMAC is a great Venue - Ray Lamontagne is the voice of a voiceless generation. His talent exudes from his body - you feel his passion when he sings. He is such a modest and down to earth man, he stands to the side of his band - never physically taking center stage - even though he is the main attraction. No rambling self centered dialoug - just music. His band is wonderful - they are a tight group that doesn't merely play music - they create music as one soulful unit. I was aware that his latest album was a bit on the country side, but the country tone of the show was a little more than I was expecting. He played very few of the old good Ray songs...but every song was beautiful. As good if not better than on his CD's - which you can't say for many, if any, current acts making "music" today. Bottom line is Ray is true talent..rare talent...and this concert will be a memory I remember for the rest of my life. At times I had tears in my eyes, simply from the amazement of witnessing him live :)

I attended also to see Brandi Carlile. But there was a seconded opening act which was OK but drastically cut into Carlile's set. Probably not a good idea to have 2 opening artists unless the event is extended or there are a substantial number of songs where all acts play together.

Put simply, after 30 years of seeing shows by all sorts of musical artists (and being a musician myself) I can safely say that an singer-songwriter of Ray's caliber only comes along once in a great while. Greek in Berkeley was my first time hearing him-he's now on a very short list of "must-sees" which includes people like Bob Dylan...that should tell you everything you need to know right there.

An absolutely superb show by both artists! The sound was amazing and the stage management/ lighting was even better! My only complaint would be the lawn seat tickets do not really justify the price as there seems to be too many ppl for the amount of space available and even when we eventually found space; the hill was too steep to ever feel positioned comfortably!

I would have never figured David Gray and Ray Lamontagne would tour together, and I love seeing them both. Quite a treat to see them at such a great venue as the Greek and the weather was a bit cool but clear. The Visa Signature stuff was totally worth the extra few dollars like for the VIP parking and the drink passes. It definitely impressed my date and was more than I expected.

I have been a devoted Ray LaMontagne fan for years, but this was the first live performance I have been to. We went as a group of 4, and we were all completely blown away by how incredible his voice is live! David Gray followed Ray, but it was obvious that Ray should have been the main performer. The arena cheered crazily when Ray came back out to sing the last song of the night next to David. We were tempted to buy tickets to the next night's concert just to see him again! This is a show for all ages. What a night! VERY impressed by Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs!

Despite the numerous fans that felt compelled to yell at/to Ray throughout while he was talking between songs, this was a very enjoyable show. As expected, the performance was on the mellow side. But Ray still poured his heart and soul into each song. And it was nice to hear Ray talk a bit in between songs. Not quite a "story-tellers" session, but pretty close. We did not make it back to the Saturday or Sunday Night shows (although we seriously considered it). But I will definitely see him next/any time he is town.

We went thinking we would hear some faves tunes from Ray s list of hits. Turns out what he s really doing is launching a Pink Floyd Tribute band with music presumably (& exclusively) from his new CD. He addressed the crowd once to introduce his band and did so without smilIng or engaging on any level with his audience. It felt like he didn t even want to be there. Or give folks a return on their expectation from the price of admission. A supreme disappointment from beginning to end. Won t bother with any more of his live gigs.

Breese Stevens Field was excellent. Back half of the field was set up for people to spread out blankets to sit and relax. Front half was for those who wanted to stand. Easy to get to a beer stand and to a port-a-pottie (there were plenty of both). Two large screens allowed for video viewing (though the goofy '80s-style effects the video people used were annoying). Sound system was adequate with nice sound the further from the stage one got. The concert, however, sucked. I stood in the front half but was surrounded by people who'd rather talk than see a show. Ray LaMontange's voice was drowned out the crowd. Admittedly it's better to see him in a more intimate place versus a high school football field, but to have a crowd that cared more about their workplace projects or their narcissistic social media posts is just sad. I left after seven songs. I saw five concerts that week. This was easily the worst.

We saw Ray on his last tour and it was like a Pink Floyd reunion tour. Assured that that wouldn't happen again, we bought tickets for this tour and it did happen again!! After two shows I still have not heard old favorites like "Beg, Steal or Borrow" or "For the Summer". It won't happen again.

Although the concert started at 7:30, Ray did not start playing until 9:15. There was 45 min. of nothing between the opening band and Ray. That's unacceptable. The acoustics were disappointing as well. The back up was louder than Ray. Bummer.

Should have researched more before booking these tickets. Ray played none of his fan favorites. Gorgeous venue but really disappointing show. Saw Ray last time he was in Madison, because my wife wanted to go, and he was pretty good. Not my taste in music, necessarily, but the show was good. This was completely different. He has certainly gone in a more rock direction. Not the acoustic type of show that he performed the before. More psychedelic and a lot more electric guitar. The music wasn't bad, but not what was expected. In addition, there was ZERO interaction with the audience. The energy of the band was reflected in the crowd and all but those right up front were just standing and watching. We were on a blanket with friends further back and had a nice, relaxing social gathering, with pleasant but uninspiring music playing in the background. It was a nice evening, but not worth half of what I paid for the tickets.

We love Ray...he's an extremely talented musician, with an excellent band that can really rock it. However, it may be our lack of knowledge of his song catalog, but the entire show didn't include ANY..not one, top 40 hit, from whatever chart he would be on. The volume could have been higher for Neko Case. She was hard to hear. It was better for Ray. I've seen Ray twice in three years and he doesn't play his older hits, which is disappointing. I would be nice if he would throw one or two of those songs into his set list. This was our first time at the venue. I have most of Ray's catalogue but in many ways the entire concert was unrecognizable--and not in a great way. The two long closing numbers seemed more designed to meet a contractual commitment to play 90 minutes than they were designed to please the crowd, display instrumental prowess or sell a new LP. The sound engineer/ or company had a set up that seemed adequate for a venue 1/4 of the size. The monitors that were supposed to augment the concert clearly did not consider the brightness of a summer evening with the screens facing west. The visual effects were also perplexing. I say this as a long time Ray fan, but if you were not a fan prior to the concert, you would have left a fan a Neko Case but not Ray I am sorry to say. I get that as an artist it is important to push artistic boundaries to remain relevant, but I am not so sure that you can succeed at the expense of the fans who have travelled hundreds of miles, spent hundreds to attend, and then were reward with a performance that from our seats seemed like a perfunctory exercise to satisfy a contract. I left scratching my head as did most people sitting near us.

I came to this concert expecting to hear some new Ray mixed with some of his slower, soulful songs. Instead I was blasted with guitar shredding and psychadelic light shows. All well and good if that's what you're expecting, but I was not. And if you have a 10 oclock curfew at a venue, you had better not cut it short at 9:55!! You couldn't come out and do one last acoustic song to fill a 5 minute space?

Went to see Neko Case, she was awesome. Ray LaMontagne was...meh. Tough for him to hold his own, coming on stage right after a singer with such a powerful voice. As always, the ~50% mark-up that Ticketmaster hit me with for various fees (such Convenience!) was both enfuriating and comical.

I went to the recent show in Madison. This was the first time I had seen both Ray LaMontagne and Nico Case. They were both great and it was an awesome night! I will definitely go see either of them perform in the future. I personally did not care that Ray didn't sing any of his early songs. I was just happy to see him live period. And he did not disappoint! This venue was good. The back half of the field is for blankets. The front half is where everyone stands. I was able to get nice and close with a basic gen admission ticket. The VIP section is way on the side of the field. Glad I didn't spend my money on that.

Like so many concerts in Cleveland, it is almost impossible to enjoy a show. Constant talking, shouting at times, ruins the performance. People standing up and taking selfies in front of you, ruining your view. I would recommend anyone to go and see a show in Pittsburgh instead. The whole show was so serene and intimate (even if some random girls would scream out like banshees every once in a while) from his voice, to the setup of a rug and a mic, the blue evening lighting, and of course ray's brilliant voice. We sat the second row to the end. all the way in the back, and though we couldnt make out complete facial features, and couldnt hear what they were saying when they talked all the time (ray does speak softly though) it was still fantastic and when he sang you felt two feet in front of him. if you haven't seen mister lamontagne, you must.

Ray's live performance was incredibly enjoyable. I already find his music to be intensely emotional, beautiful, strong and sometimes sad.. yet soothing, but his performance at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, surprised me! I was expecting him to be very soft and quiet, but no! He dominated the stage, with just him, his acoustic guitar, and the amplifier. I didn't want to stop listening to him. Excellent projection of his voice, and the Orpheum does an excellent job displaying it for the audience. This was my second concert here, and the sound is truly a treat. Ray's opener was also fantastic. Lissie, who also treads on a similar path as Ray.. strong yet delicate voice, beautiful lyrics, and only needs a guitar and an amp to be so good. I got her CD, and it's definitely an asset to my collection.

Ray LaMontagne is truly a master of the art! His voice, his soul, his passion is what makes him incredible--especially if he can do this solo! The Fox theater is a great venue because it is small and personable. I was hoping that there would have been more lights, but he explained that he likes to do shows low lit, even in the dark. But I guess it added to the ambiance. One thing that caught me off guard was the fact that he forgot the lyrics to his own, EMPTY, and blamed it on the crowd cheering. It was a little funny and he made light of the fumble- It was a great concert and I will always be a loyal admirer.

The show definitely had a little different feel -- was a little on the mellow side (even for Ray) -- with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra accompanying Ray and the band. But the arrangements were very well done. Was a little disappointed not to hear "3 More Days" as I think that would have sounded great with the orchestra. Otherwise, he covered most of the fan-favorites -- Trouble, Shelter, Empty, You Are the Best Thing (as the encore) -- all of which sounded great.
