The Growlers

THE GROWLERS IN CONCERT:SoCal garage and psych rock favorites The Growlers continued to evolve in 2014 with their third album Chinese Fountain, an ambitious record that expanded their laid-back "beach goth" sound with polished arrangements and crisp production. While the album marked a mature new direction for the band, their outrageous live shows remained as satisfyingly madcap as ever, treating ticket buyers to colorful wigs, outré makeup, cross-dressing, and assorted props and antics. Whether the band is conjuring up the retro haze of "One Million Lovers" or basking in the disco strut of "Chinese Fountain" , they always deliver an unforgettable concert experience that combines eccentric theatricality with first-rate musicianship.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:The Growlers formed in Southern California in 2006 and quickly made a name for themselves with their trippy, reverb-soaked take on '60s pop.

rude workers at the dingy and gross venue put a major damper on my favorite bands show. They were great as always.

The band looked like they couldn't wait for the show to end. No energy, flat, and then the lead singer dipped off stage for a few songs. It was a weird show.

The Growlers are a great band, always go to their shows. BUT please make a 21 and older show. The high school crowd made it freaken horrible.

My bf is a big fan of this band for years. He recently introduced their music to me & I love it too. Their energy & sound is great live- had me dancing harder than half the peeps there who prob have known them for longer. Cool, intimate, inviting-dungeon-like venue too @ The Paradise. Would def be down to see them again! I heard from some other fans there that sometimes the lead singer doesn't sound as good, but this show was on point!

A few years back when I first heard The Growlers I thought they had a sound like the doors with Bob Dylan leading, and their lyric always deliver a dirty colorful Californium of love and hate. The lyrics are still great although the sound has changed a bit. In Boston they had new mariachi outfits and a neon City Club sign. The cloths seemed to be perfect for there ever changing style of unwashed street rat-hood. At one point in the show I smelled the strong smell of sweat bThey played a great mixture of old and new music, "Bad Land" and "Sealion Goth Blues" were thankfully played. I look forward to seeing them again soon.

There is really nothing to say except this concert was amazing. The stage presence was great, the venue was great. Late night slice was on deck, which was great. And the band preformed so beautifully, i think I cried.

That's how I felt during the Friday night show. I went both nights. On Thursday, the band was loud and everything was distorted. I only stayed for 3/4s of the show. Friday night though- Whoa- the sound was perfect. You could hear the music and lyrics. I felt sorry for anyone who missed this magical night!

The show started out with a few covers delivered by a drag queen, who functioned, very effectively, like a sports team mascot throughout. The Growlers front man then came out, strewing the crowd with a handful of playing cards. The band took the stage and started strong. Its charismatic front man reminded me of Jim Morrison of the Doors in singing style, poeticism, and curly hair! They played a LONG, satisfying, set peppered with crowd surfing, including some by the aforementioned drag queen and members of the band's entourage. At one point, a local Chinese high school team entered with a couple of fantastic, lit-up Chinese lion costumes, each costume occupied by 2 guys, one on the other's shoulders. Loved the set design, by the way--Chinese fans and parasols, and masks. Great show!

I had heard about the Growlers from a friend who went to their concert back in October. Curious about this "surf rock" band, as she described them, I looked up some of their music on Youtube. I immediately developed a great liking for tunes such as Sea Lion Goth Blues, Empty Bones, Old Cold River, etc. Needless to say, I went on an Amazon purchase and download spree of some of my favorite tunes from this band. This was my second concert ever, my first being the Anaheim House of Blues venue where the Toadies were the main act. About an hour into the music, the stink of pot began to overwhelm the ground floor area. That alone ruined the experience for me. I tried to get into the music but actually seeing other concert goers blazing it up and that overwhelming reek basically made me decide never to go to another Growlers concert ever (if that's the kind of crowd they attract). Or it could just be that they played at a venue where these kinds of people flock to (Hollywood) in droves. If this isn't the norm for their concerts, I might consider going again but as it currently stands, nope.

Hands down best show I've ever been to. The venue was cool and small; it made the atmosphere much more quaint and personal. ALL BANDS BLEW MY MIND. Sean Bones and The Growlers were unforgettable.
